Box Office: ‘Gone Girl’ Surging to $35 Million-Plus Weekend

$

0

Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are showing solid drawing power as “Gone Girl” heads for an opening weekend of at least $35 million in the U.S., according to early estimates Friday.

Fox’s “Gone Girl” looked likely to draw more than $12 million on its opening day at 3,014 locations.

That should be enough to give the thriller a winning weekend over New Line’s scarefest “Annabelle,” which will probably take in about $14 million Friday and wind up the weekend with an equally impressive $30 million at 3,185.

That scenario would represent a shot in the arm for studios and exhibitors. Should both “Gone Girl” and “Annabelle” finish above $30 million, it would be first time time in two months that two titles have cleared that figure since the Aug. 8-10 frame with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Both “Gone Girl” and “Annabelle” are R-rated and have been aimed at attracting mature audiences.

David Fincher directed “Gone Girl” with Fox and New Regency producing for $61 million. Should the Friday estimate hold, “Gone Girl” will become the biggest launch for a Fincher title, eclipsing the $30 million launch of 2002’s “Panic Room.”

Conversely, Nicholas Cage’s faith-based “Left Behind” appeared to be showing little traction with a first-day gross of $900,000 for Freestyle, projecting to about $2.7 million for the weekend.

Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer” led the rest of the pack with an early estimate of $5.5 million on Friday, portending a second weekend of about $18 million for Sony — a decline of about 47%, which would give it about $64 million for its first 10 days.

Fox’s third weekend of “The Maze Runner” looked likely to finish fourth with $3 million on Friday and a $10 million weekend, edging Focus’ second weekend of “The Boxtrolls” at about $9 million.

Sony Pictures Classics Plans Kristen Stewart Oscar Push for 'Still Alice' (Exclusive)

still_alice_clip_still

SPC will push the 24-year-old for a best supporting actress nom, one of several it hopes to land alongside an all but assured best actress mention for Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore, this year's clear best actress Oscar frontrunner for her work in Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland's Still Alice — a drama in which she plays a middle-aged academic diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease — won't be the only person associated with that film to get a major Oscar push this year, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Sony Pictures Classics, which picked up the film's U.S. distribution rights at the Toronto Film Festival, intends to mount an all-out campaign for several others associated with the film, especially Kristen Stewart in the best supporting actress category, who plays the daughter of Moore's character.

"In addition to the depth of its screenplay and direction, it features several major performances," Barker continued. "There's no question that Julianne Moore gives the greatest performance of her career to date — it's a performance of such amazing depth and subtlety — but one of the reasons it comes off so spectacularly well is that the actors around her are so strong. Kristen Stewart has never been better than she is in this film. Alec Baldwin gives one of the strongest performances of his career. In addition to that, you've got Kate Bosworth and Hunter Parrish also giving really strong performances."

Many observers have zeroed in on Stewart's performance — depicting the daughter who both spars with and cares for her declining mother — as being particularly impressive, and Barker, who has never worked with the 24-year-old before but has long admired her from afar, agrees with that assessment. "Kristen Stewart is someone we have seen in many movies over the last several years — four in 2014, with three coming up in 2015 so far — and she has shown great range in such a wide variety of genres," he said. "But there is something about this performance that has new depths that she hasn't shown before. She's really terrific in the film."

The Bold & Beautiful Goes To Amsterdam!

Off to another locale, are they? Yes, the international smash The Bold and the Beautiful continues its string of beautiful locale from around the world to incorporate into their stories! This time the backdrop will be the canals of Amsterdam for a romantic story filming the first week of October, the series announced today.

According to series EP and head writer, Brad Bell: “While in the Netherlands for a Forrester Creations photo shoot, one couple finds love while another is falling apart. The action takes place over seven episodes, and we are very excited about showcasing the beauty of Amsterdam during our shoot.”

Cast members Ashleigh Brewer (“Ivy Forrester”), Darin Brooks (“Wyatt Spencer”), Scott Clifton (“Liam Spencer”) and Kim Matula (“Hope Logan Spencer”) will take part. Dutch actor and singer Ferry Doedens has also signed on to guest star as Forrester Creations’ local public relations executive, a role created especially for episodes filmed in Amsterdam. Episodes will air in the U.S. on the CBS Television Network in November 2014 and in the Netherlands in 2015.

Fred Willard & John McCook Discuss The Arrival of John Forrester On B&B!

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Willard and his on-screen bro John McCook for a dishy discussion on just what is a “John Forrester” and what to expect when he hits the airwaves in episodes beginning this week on Thursday, October 2nd and Friday, October 3rd, and continuing next week on Monday, October 6th! Here are some excerpts below from these gents on the latest addition to the Forrester clan!

Willard on what brought him to B&B:“They asked me to do it, and I said ‘yes’, and then they sent me the script, and then when I got the script, I loved it. I loved the character. I wasn’t sure what it was going to be. First they said, ‘Would you like to come in and work with us on a character?’ And I couldn’t do it at first. I’d done a pilot earlier for NBC and I was under contract. So then when I called I talked to B&B executive producer and head writer, Brad Bell, and he said, ‘Oh, this is a perfect time, because we’re writing in Ivy’s (Ashleigh Brewer) father, who’s come over from Australia, and it might be a two or three show arc.‘ I said, ‘That sounds wonderful.’ And they explained the character to me, and I said, ‘That sounds great.’ And they said, ‘Slowly, we’ll move John McCook out of the picture!’ (Laughs) They told you that … didn’t they John? Oh, I’m sorry!” (Laughs)

McCook on having a quite interesting on-screen brother:“I thought it was great and clever casting. It was funny and wonderful. I just hope that it works out that there is some substantive story in there too, because John is a wonderfully quirky dad for Ivy, and a brother for Eric. I would love for it to evolve into something really precious for our show. Who knows? We will see.”

Willard on how he views the character of John:“John is quite a colorful character to play. He seems to be kind of a world traveler, but with a lot of bologna! So I’m sure he makes up half the stories, and he’s probably in love with my own life, and he’s seem to be very fond of his own wife. He speaks of her very fondly, and his daughter. So I don’t see any bad side. It’s kind of humorous. He’s kind of a harmless guy. I don’t think it’s a laugh out loud part, but I think there’s a funny scene in the third episode I have. I don’t think it’s turned into a comedy. I play a quirky, kind of strange character.”

Willard on how John views the very successful Eric:“He probably envy him quite a bit, because he’s got a real job! He try to discourage him from coming down to Australia, but I think when I see the models he works with, and the place he works in, and his friends, I’m quite envious.”

Former OLTL and Dark Shadows Writer Sam Hall Has Died!

Writer Sam Hall, best known for his work on Dark Shadows and One Life to Live, died on Friday, September 26. He was 93.

Allison Samuel Hall was born on March 11, 1921, in Carrollton, Ohio, and graduated from Dartmouth and Yale. A veteran of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, he was married to actress Grayson Hall in 1952.

Sam was a playwright who had spent several years working on the CBS daytime drama The Brighter Day. He was not really interested in accepting another TV job. But the family had been struggling for a while, and Sam was considering moving back to Ohio to work at his father’s rubber gloves factory. Then Grayson got a short-term acting role on ABC's afternoon soap opera Dark Shadows, which turned into a long-term gig, and that kept them in New York. So when creator Dan Curtis said he needed a new writer to replace Malcolm Marmorstein, Sam said he would give it a try. The series became a cult classic, with stories that continued to be told in novels, comic books, movies, audio stories, a primetime television revival and more. Dark Shadows featured the traditional themes of love and family during its five-year run (1966-1971), but mixed in were werewolves, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel, and even a parallel universe.

Sam Hall spent 10 years working at ABC daytime soap opera One Life to Live, and went on to write for other daytime serials including General Hospital and Santa Barbara.

"The Legend of Korra" Co-Creators Will Challenge You to Hold Onto Your Beliefs

by ERIC THURM

"Before "Balance" begins October 3, Complex asked Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino a few questions about the upcoming season, and how the show's world has changed over the course of the series.

To what extent were Books Two through Four conceptualized as one longer story rather than three shorter arcs? Did that change your ability to react to how individual parts of the show were turning out as production went on?
DiMartino:
From the start, Legend of Korra was conceived to have stand-alone seasons with a new villain each time, rather than the three-season arc of The Last Airbender. We had no idea when we began how many seasons we would have, but once we got the green light for the second batch of 26 episodes (which make up Books Three & Four) we knew we could weave in more connective tissue between the seasons, while still keeping them separate stories. The biggest thread linking them is what happens in Book Two when UnaVaatu unleashes spirit vines on Republic City. Those spirit vines play a big role in the final season! Also, we were able to see Korra’s character arc through to the end. She still has a lot of healing to do and some soul searching before her journey is finished.

From the trailer, it looks like Book Four will pick up three years after the end of Book Three. Why the time jump, and how much can we expect to be filled in on what we've missed?
DiMartino:
I loved it when shows like Battlestar Galactica, 24, and Lost jumped forward in time at the end of (or between) seasons, and a dramatic time jump made sense for the story we wanted to tell in Book Four. We needed some time to pass for the political situation in the Earth Kingdom to evolve and for Korra to be out of commission for a while. Everyone’s grown up a bit and moved on with their lives and there’s enough information we weave in to explain how the characters got to where they are now. We devote a whole episode to Korra and her emotional and healing journey, beginning at the end of Book Three and following her recovery up to the start of Book Four. It’s one of our most unique episodes, storytelling-wise, and one I’m very proud of."

'X-Men: Apocalypse' Will Finish 'First Class' Trilogy, Says Writer

$

xmendaysoffuturepastDF11021_rgb

X-Men: Apocalypse will be the end of an era for Fox’s Marvel superhero franchise, according to screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg, who says that the 2016 movie will finish an arc that started with 2011’s X-Men: First Class.

“I will say that [X-Men: Apocalypse] is definitely the close of a trilogy for those First Class characters,” Kinberg told Collider, adding that it “isn’t to say we won’t see them in future movies, hopefully we will, but it’s a completion of an arc for them.”

The conclusion of that arc will further explore the relationship between James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender’s Erik Lensherr (A.K.A. Magneto), which Kinberg described as being “so integral to the franchise,” but that isn’t the only relationship to be advanced in the movie. “The relationship between Beast and Mystique is a really interesting one that we didn’t have a lot of time to explore in Days of Future Past,” the writer said. “We’ll have an opportunity to do more of that in Apocalypse.”

Kinberg also confirmed earlier reports that Apocalypse will follow Days of Future Past’s lead by jumping forward a decade between movies. “We’re having a lot of fun with the idea of the ‘80s,” he said. “It’s a decade that [director Bryan Singer] and I both grew up in, and so the music, the style, the aesthetic [and] the legacy of ‘80s movies is something we’re really having fun with.”

If this means that we might finally get to see the roller-skating greatness that is the Disco Queen Dazzler herself show up in a period-specific movie, then X-Men: Apocalypse might just have become the must-see movie of 2016. Don’t let us down, X-producers.

Jessica Alba on her Way to Building a $1 Billion Business

THR_Jessica_Alba_Embed copy

Roles and paydays for actresses are declining, but she was among the first to market with her own lifestyle extension, The Honest Co., as everyone (Blake Lively, Reese Witherspoon) takes a page from her playbook.

In an age when roles and paydays are fewer and farther between, Alba epitomizes the move into personal brand extension. Now the mother of two daughters, Honor, 6, and Haven, 3, with whom she seems game to appear in paparazzi shots, she has marketed herself as the ultimate mother: someone with looks and taste but down-to-earth instincts — happy to be seen as a "regular" mom during the day and a glamorous red-carpet presence at night. Unlike Gwyneth Paltrow, with her 6-year-old Goop, and other stars who have put their oar into the brand-extension waters (Reese Witherspoon announced her upcoming line of Southern products, Draper James, this year), Alba isn't seen as elitist or entitled. (Her profile as an actress in such movies as the Fantastic Four and Sin City franchises arguably is lower-wattage.) She appears uncomplaining and accessible, calling out to her "tweeples" on Twitter about what she's "stoked to be a part of." Plus, her multi-ethnic background (her dad is Mexican, her mother Danish and French Canadian) gives her a reach not necessarily afforded every actress in Hollywood.

But with any business that enters the arena of nontoxic lifestyle products (a market worth $10 billion, according to a recent report by research and consulting firm Natural Marketing Institute) — especially one with a name like The Honest Co. — comes scrutiny. There has been chatter in the media about a supposed rivalry between Alba and Paltrow, which began during a March 2013 interview promoting Alba's best-selling book The Honest Life, when she compared herself to Paltrow: "I didn't grow up with a bunch of money, so my tips are much more grounded." Paltrow then reportedly was overheard disparaging Alba as a hypocrite and in April posted an item on Goop questioning the safety of Honest Co.'s Multi-Surface Cleaner. Alba says the idea that there is friction with Paltrow is "craziness." (Honest Co. partner Christopher Gavigan, a family friend of Paltrow's, says she offered to take down the reference, but he declined. Paltrow did not respond to a request for comment.)

In one shot, Ari seductively stands back-to-back with Abel Tesfaye (his stage name is The Weeknd). In another shot, we see the duo laughing together. We can already tell this video is going to be amazing!

Ariana has been so busy lately. She performed on Saturday Night Live last weekend AND then performed again (at 3 a.m.!) at an after party for the show. Does she ever sleep?

James Franco Producing Movie About Fraternity Hazing

The man with a million projects just took on one more. James Franco is coming on as a producer for Goat, a movie adaptation of Brad Land's memoir detailing the hazing he went through while pledging the same fraternity as his older brother. The "brotherhood" rituals eventually ended in another pledge's death.

The movie will mark a reunion of sorts for Franco, who’ll once more be working with Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green. However, the Pineapple director won’t be calling the shots this time – although he was originally slated to. His original line-up for the flick even had casting underway, with Emile Hirsch attached in the lead role. After Green opted out of directing, Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) was next in line to take on the job back in 2008.

Will it be a comedy, or a dramedy, or a thriller? There’s a good chance it’ll contain all three, especially with the talent attached. The idea of Hirsch taking on the lead is one that’d definitely work for this kind of material, but as his name was not mentioned in this new iteration, we’ll have to wait and see. There’s of course a strong possibility that Franco himself may take the role, though that isn’t confirmed.

source. full synopsis for brad land’s memoir..
Reeling from a terrifying assault that has left him physically injured and psychologically shattered, nineteen-year-old Brad Land must also contend with unsympathetic local police, parents who can barely discuss “the incident” (as they call it), a brother riddled with guilt but unable to slow down enough for Brad to keep up, and the feeling that he’ll never be normal again. When Brad’s brother enrolls at Clemson University and pledges a fraternity, Brad believes he’s being left behind once and for all. Desperate to belong, he follows. What happens there—in the name of “brotherhood,” and with the supposed goal of forging a scholar and a gentleman from the raw materials of boyhood—involves torturous late-night hazing, heartbreaking estrangement from his brother, and, finally, the death of a fellow pledge. Ultimately, Brad must weigh total alienation from his newfound community against accepting a form of brutality he already knows too well.

Joshua Jackson And Diane Kruger Sell L.A. Home For Over Asking!

Gorgeous, globe-trotting couple Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger, have just sold their Los Angeles pied-a-terre for over asking!

In a deal that closed on September 30, 2014, Jackson and Kruger banked $1,488,000 for the 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home they were asking $1,450,000 for.

Purchased in 2009 for 1,315,000, the barely-used mini-compound was the West Coast home base for the long-term duo, who split time between New York, Paris…and wherever else their glamorous careers take them.

It’s no shock that Kruger, who is a fashion industry darling and a frequent face on “best dressed” lists, owned a home described as “chic.”

Located on a prime street in the Hollywood Hills, the just-sold property is walled and gated for the utmost privacy. In the main house, an open floor plan showcases a living room with a brick fireplace, elegant formal dining room with built-in shelving, and a den/media room. Calming white walls, dark oak floors and large windows punctuate these spaces.

The gourmet kitchen features a La Canche range, butcher block center-island, exposed wood shelving and a farmhouse sink that overlooks the garden.

The European inspired master suite has newly-refinished poured concrete floors, a fireplace and a walk-in closet. The adjacent master bath has an extra-large shower with wishbone marble floors. French doors lead to the large terrace, with views of Hollywood. The second bedroom has a door to the terrace and an adjacent remodeled bathroom.

Downstairs, the home has coveted guest quarters that contain its own kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living area. A true guest oasis, it can be accessed through the main house or a separate entrance.

Want to know what Agent Simmons has been up to since we've last seen her (the real her, not the one in Fitz's mind)?

Link to the preview at CinemaBlend

"The clip, which comes via TV Guide does reveal that GJemma Simmons appears to be happily employed at a Hydra lab, but it's very possible -- even likely -- that she's working undercover on behalf of Coulson.
...
As for the sequence above, is it me, or does this clip have that sort of cheerfully ominous tone to it, like things are a little too happy and something's not quite right. Also, did anyone else experience a major Lost flashback? "

LAIKA and Focus Features, the two companies behind the hit animated feature The Boxtrolls, will continue their partnership on LAIKA's next three projects. Focus CEO Peter Schlessel and LAIKA President and CEO Travis Knight made the announcement today.

Focus opened The Boxtrolls nationwide last weekend to a $17.3 million gross, marking it the biggest debut yet for a LAIKA movie. The Boxtrolls follows the successful and acclaimed Focus and LAIKA animated films Coraline (2009) and ParaNorman (2012), each of which grossed over $100 million worldwide.

Coraline earned Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, and Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature Film; and was named one of the year’s 10 Best Films by the American Film Institute (AFI) with an AFI Award. ParaNorman was cited as best animated feature film by more critics' groups than any other 2012 animated feature; and earned BAFTA, Critics' Choice, and Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature Film.

The Boxtrolls has also been released in 16 international territories to date, including the United Kingdom, where it was #1 at the box office for two weeks in a row; and Australia, where after just over two weeks it has already grossed more than either Coraline or ParaNorman did during their entire runs.
