The good, gorgeous sis ASHANTI "ASHA" BROMFIELD (bookmark that name plz),
Riverdale's Melody Valentine, drummer of the Pussycats, utterer of the iconic "cheese fries" line, wholly underrepresented on the show, deserves more screen time than Jughead...gave an amazing interview for Teen Vogue where she discussed diversity, the Pussycats' impact, and being able to wear her natural hair on screen.
-Is very close with her fellow Pussycats Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy) and Hayley Law (Valerie Brown)
-Would like to see Melody explored more three-dimensionally and given more backstory (drag those writers, sis)
-Originally auditioned for Josie, didn't think she'd get it because she's black. After Ashleigh got it, she didn't think they'd let the other Pussycats be black girls, and was very pleasantly surprised when she got a callback for Melody
-Enjoys acting on
Riverdale as she's able to break stereotypes and not just be the one token black girl
-All three of the Pussycats have very different backgrounds (Hayley is biracial, Ashleigh is African-American, and Asha is Afro-Caribbean), which she says shows that not all black girls are the same
-The Pussycats represent black sisterhood in a predominantly white school
-Ashleigh and Hayley inspired Asha to start wearing her natural hair on the show, is grateful that the CW allows them all to do so
"I want girls to know that that’s not true anymore. You have the power to choose between whether or not you want to rock it natural. If you want to wear a weave and extensions, that’s cool, too. I don’t think anyone should be shamed for their choice, but it’s important to know that you do have a choice. Most importantly, love what makes you who you are no matter what."-In regards to diversity in film and television:
"It’s important for people to know that we don’t have to give so much power to these people who are in power. We can create our own stories. You don’t have to rely on other people. It’s time that we pick up the pen and we start telling our own stories. Writing is a huge part of who I am and what I do. Right now I’m working on two feature films: Block-o and Imperial. It empowers me so much to see [that] I can actually be the change that I want to see in the world by writing my own characters and including people the way that I know them to be."SOURCE 1SOURCE 2ONTD, do you stan a beautiful sis now? Are you hungry for cheese fries?
