Charlotte Rampling regrets her “racist to whites” comments: “I got annoyed annoyed by Spike Lee"

- Rampling expressed regret over her “racist to whites” comments from 2015 during the promo for 45 Years, for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

- “It was very early in the morning and everyone was asking questions about that. It was not a very sensible thing to say but I was very tired. My husband died two months before. I got annoyed by Spike Lee. That’s all.” Spike Lee stated he would boycott the 2016 Oscars because of “another all white ballot”.

- Talks about her wonderful experience working with Woody Allen in Stardust Memories (1980).

- Refuses to talk about the #MeToo movement saying, "I don’t honestly know. I am not in America. I know in Europe how it happens and it doesn’t happen like that at all. There is something very strange in all this. Harassment obviously is everywhere. Of course, I support the women but I don’t dare speak about this."

ONTD Reading Challenge (February): Come to Brazil!

$
0
0

It's time for our monthly ONTD Reading Challenge recommendations post! This February, we invite you to Come to Brazil by reading books by Brazilian authors or that are about or set in Brazil (fiction or non-fiction).

Here are some recs to help you pick your book of the month. If you want MORE options, please check out this ONTD post of books by Brazilian authors and the recs listed at our Goodreads challenge group!

The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao (Martha Batalha)

Unusually, this book (which was originally written in Portuguese) was only published in Brazil AFTER the translations had already been published abroad. Initially rejected by national publishers, author Martha Batalha took her book to foreign publishers, and found success as a best-selling author in several countries. Only then was her book the subject of a bidding war by Brazilian publishers. The Invisible Life... is historical fiction, set in 1940s Rio de Janeiro, about two sisters who try to assert their independence and courageously carve a path of their own in a deeply conservative society.

The Alienist (Machado de Assis)

This novella by the most important Brazilian writer of all time is darkly ironic and supremely witty social satire. A 19th century alienist goes to a small Brazilian town to operate an insane asylum in accordance with the scientific theories of the time, but finds himself committing more and more people to his institution as he sees signs of madness in everyone. But who is really mad?

The Complete Stories (Clarice Lispector)

Clarice is beloved of Brazilians for her unique worldview and storytelling. Her modernity, imagination and stream of consciousness style has led to comparisons to authors such as Virginia Woolf, James Joyce and Franz Kafka, but the truth is she is a true original. This new volume collects all of her stories (not the novels) and is a veritable treasure trove. Her novels have also been translated (for example, The Passion According to G.H. and The Hour of the Star), so check them out!

Captains of the Sands (Jorge Amado)

Jorge Amado is one of the most widely read Brazilian authors both in his native country and abroad. Captains of the Sands portrays the lives of street children in the state of Bahia (where Amado was from) in the 1930s and is considered a "social novel". When it was published, in 1937, the government burned over 800 copies of it in a public bonfire, alleging it was communist propaganda (Amado himself was a communist).

1808 (Laurentino Gomes)

In 1808, Napoleon's army was just about to invade Portugal, when the Prince Regent decided to move the entire royal family, court and administration to Brazil (literally thousands of people from the elite), leaving the common Portuguese people to fend for themselves. You can't make this shit up. It makes for a fantastic page-turner.

Exploration Fawcett (Percy Fawcett)

Brazilians don't really have a lot of patience for gringos who go traipsing around the Amazon (with very good reason), but adventure buffs or fans of crackpot might enjoy the story of Colonel Fawcett, a British nut who wanted to "discover" a lost city in the Amazon, which he thought would be populated by an ancient race of white, blue-eyed people. He went missing and his son compiled his travel documents to make this book, which was a best-seller at the time. There were lots of expeditions to try to discover what happened to him, including one in which Ian Fleming's brother participated in (HIS book about it is Brazilian Adventure). And the latest book about it is The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon which as you know became a (flop) movie recently.

Perfect Days (Raphael Montes)

A twisted young medical student kidnaps the girl of his dreams and embarks on a dark and delirious road trip across Brazil in the English-language debut of a young Brazilian crime writer. This is a psychological thriller not for the faint of heart.

Nemesis (Misha Glenny)

This is a good pick for readers of true crime. Misha Glenny specializes in writing about organized crime all over the globe, and here he turns his eye to Nem, one of the most dangerous and notorious drug traffickers in Rio history (currently behind bars, but still active), and how he fits in a complicated web of violence, corruption, poverty and power.

Greta Gerwig Coached Tim-O-T Chalamet on His Woody Allen Response

$

  • It has come out this morning that Timothee Chalamet sought out advice from his Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig on how to handle the Woody Allen questions.

  • Spotted by a Hollywood Reporter insider, Timothee and Greta were in a heated conversation near the bathrooms at the LA Film Critics Association Awards that lasted over 10 minutes.

  • Two days later, citing contractual obligations that have since proven to be false, Timothee said he would be donating his salary from the Woody Allen to the Times Up movement.

  • Interesting mentor on the subject considering Greta's own ignorance on the subject until, finally, making a halfway decent statement the week after the Globes.

ONTD Original: 20 of Woody Allen's Worst Quotes

$
0
0
Some people are subtle about their predatory instincts; other people are Woody Allen. The celebrated filmmaker has never been shy about the qualities that attract him in a girl. And while he may not have screamed it from the rooftops, he made damn sure to install flashing neon letters up there.

You don't believe Dylan Farrow's allegations? How about taking Woody Allen at his word:

1. This 'self-deprecating' quote from 1976

51gvJ5ScZHL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_

"I’m open-minded about sex. I’m not above reproach; if anything, I’m below reproach. I mean, if I was caught in a love nest with fifteen 12-year-old girls tomorrow, people would think, yeah, I always knew that about him. Nothing I could come up with would surprise anyone. I admit to it all.”

2. The quote that you hope is a joke

TTMAR-with-Louise-2

About Janet Margolin: "Occasionally I was forced to make love to her to get a decent performance. I did what I had to but in a businesslike way."

3. The quote that you realize probably isn't a joke

naty_abascal_y_woody_allen_en_una_imagen_publicada_por_la_socialite_en_su_instagram_9868_1200x630

About Nati Abascal: "Could she act? Yes, I learned and especially in her defense. She blocked my [hand] as I reached for her thigh and brought her knee up sharply into my groin as we discussed show business...I pulled a contract out of my pocket and we both signed, but not until I told her about the sexual obligation that was a part of the job of any actress who worked with me. I came to appreciate her body for what it was as time went by, namely, a girl’s body . . . Soon she got used to my ways. Aware of my position as father figure on the set (a director is just that) I allowed her to come to me with her problems. When she never showed up, I came to her with mine."

It's unclear whether Allen's comments are a "parody" or "wishful thinking", as some have claimed, or whether Woody Allen actually admits to sexual assault here.

4. Mariel Hemmingway about Woody Allen

1bda23307293e1266ce311dcfce1b133

Mariel filmed "Manhattan" when she was a "16-year-old "virgin [who]'d never even really made out with anybody."

She worried about her kissing scene with Allen for weeks, repeatedly saying, 'How long was it going to be?'I was scared. I even asked my mother, 'How do I make out?'"When they finally shot it, Hemingway said: "He attacked me like I was a linebacker."

She was still so nervous that she ran over to the film's cinematographer, Gordon Willis, and said, "I don’t have to do that again, do I?" (At the time, she added, "everybody just laughed.")

Hemingway goes a bit further in her memoir, detailing how after once she turned 18, Allen flew out to her parents's home in Idaho and repeatedly asked her to go to Paris with him. Hemingway told her parents "that I didn’t know what the [sleeping] arrangement was going to be, that I wasn’t sure if I was even going to have my own room. Woody hadn’t said that. He hadn’t even hinted it. But I wanted them to put their foot down. They didn’t." In fact, though Allen was in his mid-forties at the time, "They kept lightly encouraging me." Allen left Idaho via private jet the next morning after Hemingway informed him if she wasn't getting her own room, she couldn't go with him.

5. An analysis of his lifelong obsession

Annie-Hall

Journalist Richard Morgan went through 56 boxes of Allen's drafts and scribblings and concludes Allen has an obsession with with young women and girls (shocker!):

"There’s the “wealthy, educated, respected” male character in one short story (“By Destiny Denied: Incident at Entwhistle’s”) who lives with a 21-year-old “Indian” woman. First, Allen’s revisions reduce her to 18, then double down, literally, and turn her into two 18-year-olds. There’s the 16-year-old in an unmade television pitch described as “a flashy sexy blonde in a flaming red low cut evening gown with a long slit up the side.” There’s the 17-year-old girl in another short story, “Consider Kaplan,” whose 53-year-old neighbor falls in love with her as the two share a silent, one-floor-long elevator ride in their Park Avenue co-op. There’s the female college student in “Rainy Day” who “should not be 20 or 21, sounds more like 18 — or even 17 — but 18 seems better.” That script includes a male college student but gives no description of his age. Another of Allen’s male characters, in a draft o
f a 1977 New Yorker story called “The Kugelmass Episode,” is a 45-year-old fascinated by “coeds” at City College of New York. In the margin next to this character’s dialogue, Allen wrote, then crossed out, “c’est moi” — it’s me."

6. About young cocktail waitresses

Woody-Allen-2015-07-18-by-Adam-Bielawski

"Of all the famous men who ever lived, the one I would most like to have been was Socrates. Not just because he was a great thinker, because I have been known to have some reasonably profound insights myself, although mine invariably revolve around two eighteen year old cocktail waitresses and some rope handcuffs."

7. This "joke"

8. His age-appropriate obsession with a kid show

landscape-1475170155-crisis-in-six-scenes

"When I was younger and my kids were growing up, I would go through the channels and I would see her for a second." [On Miley Cyrus] "I stopped and I noticed, 'Who is this kid? She's got a great delivery!' - she was knocking off those one-liners like she was a very gifted comic performer – and then I forgot about her and moved on."

Kathy Griffin said Woody Allen had told her, "I've never missed Hannah Montana." He claimed to have seen every episode of the show.

Allen went on to work together with Miley Cyrus in 'Crisis In Six Scenes', where she was styled as the spitting image of her Hannah Montana character.

9. On age requirements

selena-gomez

DJdRniTXkAAOK58-640x357

In "Rainy Day", the female college student “should not be 20 or 21, sounds more like 18 — or even 17 — but 18 seems better.”

The script includes a male college student but gives no description of his age. Oh, and the movie also features a fictional film director who's called Roland Polland. Oh, real subtle.

Should art be separated from the artist? With Woody Allen, the question is moot: his body of work plainly expresses his views and reveals what kind of person he's attracted to. In his personal life, Allen is similarly carefree - even gleeful - in expressing his opinion on girls, particularly his wife.

10. Allen once introduced Soon-Yi as...

dn122497p01allen

"...my child bride.”

11. About that age gap

mobvie-premiere

“If somebody told me when I was younger, ‘You’re going to wind up married to a girl 35 years younger than you and a Korean, not in show business, not having any real interest in show business,’ I would have said, ‘You’re completely crazy'. Because all the women that I went out with were basically my age. Two years younger. Ten years was the maximum. Now, here, it just works like magic. The very inequality of me being older and much more accomplished, much more experienced, takes away any real meaningful conflict. So when there’s disagreement, it’s never an adversarial thing. I don’t ever feel that I’m with a hostile or threatening person."

12. Words you should never use to describe a romantic relationship

woody-allen-soon-yi-1990-lg

"It’s got a more paternal feeling to it. I love to do things to make her happy. She loves to do things to make me happy. It just works out great. It was just completely fortuitous. One of the truly lucky things that happened to me in my life.”

13. More grave-digging

scandals120409_1992_560

"I was paternal. She responded to someone paternal. I liked her youth and energy. She deferred to me, and I was happy to give her an enormous amount of decision-making just as a gift and let her take charge of so many things. She flourished."

14. Who doesn't dream of raising their partner?

475837076-director-woody-allen-arrives-with-his-wife-soon-yi-for.jpg.CROP.promo-xlarge2

"I've been able to really make her life better. I provided her with enormous opportunities, and she has sparked to them. She's educated herself and has tons of friends and children and got a college degree and went to graduate school, and she has traveled all over with me now. She's very sophisticated and has been to all the great capitals of Europe. She has just become a different person. So the contributions I've made to her life have given me more pleasure than all my films."

Asked how Soon-Yi had changed him, Allen replied: "Changed me? I don’t know if you could say she changed me... I might be the same person I was when I was 20."

15. Well, that's... charming

france-woody-allen-wedding

"Men learn to love the woman they are attracted to. Women learn to become attracted to the man they fall in love with.”

16. We're still joking about this?

121490_0001

"Congratulations are in order for Woody Allen - he and Soon Yi have a brand new baby daughter. It's all part of Woody's plan to grow his own wives."

17. You sure?

woody-18

"It’s no accomplishment to have or raise kids. Any fool can do it.”

18. Defending another predator

cosbyallen

"I have to watch my friend Bill Cosby get railroaded."

19. Still not reading the damn room

premiere-vicky-cristina-barcelona-la

"The whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved. Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that his life is so messed up. There's no winners in that, it's just very, very sad and tragic for those poor women that had to go through that."

20. The accurate self-drag

wa7_dad_tx700

"I've inherited the worst of each parent. I have my father's hypochondria and lack of concentration. I have his amorality. I have everything bad that he had. Then I have my mother's surly, pill-like, complaining, whining attitude."
