Did Susan Lucci Dodge a Bullet? Revived Soaps in Disarray!
No one could figure out why Susan Lucci hasn’t made it to the new All My Children. But Lucci and her clever manager husband Helmut Huber may have dodged a bullet. Today Prospect Park have gone on hiatus on All My Children and One Life to Live two weeks early.
The early hiatus comes just after another a surprise: instead of showing four new episodes each week the company said it would show two new episodes of each show, with a catch up show on Fridays. Their reasoning was that fans couldn’t keep up with the amount of new shows. Anyone who believed this also bought land in Pakistan.
Prospect Park says it shut down early in a dispute with IATSE. Under their agreement if costs for the shows rise above $120,000 per episode, the union fees go up. Clearly, the costs of both soaps are more than that. Prospect Park says it can’t pay higher fees.
When Prospect Park announced the cut of episodes, the company knew it was running out of money. Prospect Park has run this operation in disarray from the start. They sued ABC, which licensed the soaps to them, over the move of three characters from One Life to Live to General Hospital.
No surprise to anyone who covered Kwatinetz in his prior incarnations. A Hollywood manager with a checkered past, Kwatinetz burned a lot of bridges in the music business during tenures with Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson. He merged his company, The Firm, with Mike Ovitz and Rick Yorn’s AMG ten years ago. The whole thing collapsed quickly, with Ovitz leaving the business and Yorn taking top clients like Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz.
Lucci and Huber obviously felt they weren’t on stable ground. When Kwatinetz first tried to relaunch the soaps, he couldn’t secure the star. In the press he made it appear that Lucci was wildly demanding and unreasonable in her salary negotiations. But Lucci and Huber told me last winter that in the middle of talks, Prospect Park simply cut them off.
In the end, they may have lucked out after all. But that doesn’t help the crews and casts of both shows who bought into Prospect Park’s promises.
Joanna Johnson is seen — though not often enough — as late-blooming lesbian Karen Spencer on CBS's The Bold and the Beautiful. But her main claim to fame these days is as writer-executive producer of the new ABC Family drama The Fosters (premiering Monday at 9/8c). The series stars Teri Polo and Sherri Saum as lesbian parents Stef and Lena who preside over a multiethnic mix of kids, one biological, the others from the foster-care system. TV Guide Magazine spoke with Johnson — creator of the hit Kelly Ripa-Faith Ford sitcom Hope & Faith — to get the scoop on her newest primetime gig, where she's sharing exec-producing duties with the one and only Jennifer Lopez. And, of course, we had to find out if Johnson will ever come back to her much-missed storyline on B&B!
TV Guide: Executive producer. Soap star. Lesbian icon. We love your life!
Johnson: It's crazy, right? My world is so wild these days. [Laughs] I'm definitely calling this "My Gayest Year Ever"! It was just over a year ago that you and I sat down and did the interview for TV Guide Magazine where I publicly came out. Then there was the lesbian storyline on B&B and then The Fosters shows up in my life. The same day my last show, Emily Owens, M.D., got cancelled I started getting emails from friends saying, "The Fosters is perfect for you!" They needed someone to help the creators, Peter Paige and Brad Bredeweg, run the show — and who better than me because this show is my life! I'm married to a woman and we have two adopted, multi-racial children. [Laughs] It's the same story!
TV Guide: Then why the heck didn't you create a series like this?
Johnson: Everyone is asking me that! I should have written it. It was pretty dumb that I didn't, but thank God somebody did. The truth? I never wrote it because I never thought anybody would buy it! But here we are and isn't it amazing? ABC Family has been so incredibly supportive. I did Make It or Break It for them and just love working with the network. And Jennifer Lopez has been awesome as an executive producer. She's one of the biggest stars on the planet, yet she's been so available to us, so devoted to giving the show the kickoff it deserves. I haven't been this excited in a long time.
TV Guide: Word is, you turned down another series hoping the pilot for The Fosters would get picked up. True?
Johnson: Peter and Brad made a beautiful pilot, which I had nothing to do with. I met with them after it had been filmed and got very excited, even though I had an offer to do another show that was all set to shoot. Since The Fosters hadn't yet received a pickup from ABC Family, my agents said, "You gotta take the sure thing." In this business, you don't say no to work, but I really wanted to do The Fosters. It was so worth taking the risk. I couldn't stand the idea that it would get picked up and I'd be working on some other show, playing it safe. I would have kicked myself forever. This show can achieve so much! It's a great opportunity to raise awareness and inspire people to open up their hearts and get into the foster-care program.
TV Guide: Even though The Fosters breaks new ground in family programming by having lesbians as its main characters, their sexuality is a total side note.
Johnson: As it should be. There are so many interesting issues that come up in this series, and Stef and Lena being a same-sex couple isn't a big one because the series is set in California where gay adoption is increasingly common. But in many other states this is an issue, because gay couples or single gay people are not allowed to adopt or foster, and that's a real shame. There are a lot of wonderful families willing and wanting to get into the program but the law in some places just won't allow it. Of course, with our show set in California, we have an issue some other states don't — gay marriage isn't legal. Maybe that'll change in the future and it will be reflected in our show. We'll see what the courts decide. Another theme we'll tackle is how a lot of people want to adopt or foster but they only want babies. It's a huge challenge for the foster system to place older kids. It's sad and really tough, but it makes good drama.
TV Guide: Speaking of that, are you feeling any guilt that you loused up some "good drama" on The Bold and the Beautiful by abandoning your storyline for these producing jobs?
Johnson: Yes! I do feel bad, even though [B&B exec producer] Brad Bell always knew that was the deal. My writing-producing always comes first. But it does look like I'll be going back to B&B pretty soon. Brad and I are talking about my returning for a really fun story in July when The Fosters has wrapped for the season. I really do miss B&B — both the people and the news. I went to the GLAAD awards a while back with Crystal Chappell [Dani] and Linsey Godfrey [Caroline] and found out that Karen's daughter has turned into a total badass crazy person since the last time I was on the show. I couldn't believe it! [Laughs] Clearly, I need to come back. That girl needs some mothering!
Grab a tissue, or 12. The Hallmark Channel talk show Marie welcomed actor Corbin Bernsen, who sat down with host Marie Osmond for an emotional interview about the recent death of his mom, Jeanne Cooper, longtime star of CBS's The Young and the Restless.
"We were honored that Corbin chose Marie to share his wonderful memories of his mother," the show's executive producer Jim Romanovich tells TV Guide Magazine. "Jeanne appeared on our Y&R 40th anniversary special, which I have been told was her final television appearance. I had a chance to talk to her before the show and could tell she was a little tired. But she told me she wouldn't have missed it for the world and I will forever be grateful for her generosity. I truly loved that woman."
Check out these two exclusive clips of Bernsen's interview.
There will soon be another pretty little liar in the family.

Nearly $20 million was raised for President Obama's re-election in the Los Angeles area, where Hollywood fundraisers played a significant role. So it's no shock that an unprecedented number of showbiz insiders are finalists for diplomatic appointments during Obama's second term.
Whomever Obama decides on for the coveted Paris post, he or she will join a surprising number of nominees with Hollywood ties. Among them: Emmy-nominated television producer Colleen Bell, said to be in line for Belgium or Hungary; longtime Democratic activist and executive John Emerson, whose name has come up as a possible ambassador to Germany; HBO executive James Costos, who according to sources is under consideration for Spain; media executive-turned-political activist Rufus Gifford, who is being eyed for Denmark; and political consultant Noah Mamet, who is in the running for Argentina. Tennis Channel chief Ken Solomon is in the mix as an appointee for later in Obama's term; the president is expected to make some appointments for two-year terms rather than four to allow for more picks.
Sure it took Susan Lucci ("All My Children") and Jeanne Cooper ("The Young and the Restless") multiple nominations over decades before they won a Daytime Emmy. But their dreams were eventually realized.
Consider those stalwarts of daytime drama who toil for decades without ever taking home a trophy from the TV academy. Some of them were never even nominated for this top honor.
Susan Seaforth made her debut on "Days of Our Lives" 45 years ago. She took over the role of Julie Olson after three others had played the part for a short time since being introduced in 1965. Seaforth went on to fall in love with her leading man Bill Hayes who joined the show in 1970 to play Doug Williams.
The pair married on both the show and in real-life in 1974 and were the first supercouple on daytime TV, even landing on the cover of Time. And they found themselves in the Emmys spotlight as well -- she contended unsuccessfully for Best Actress four times (1975, 1976, 1978, 1979) while he had two losing bids for Best Actor in 1975 and 1976.
They are only recurring characters on the show these days but each of their appearances is a highlight. That they never took home Daytime Emmys is a shame but they have won over legions of fans.
Kathryn Hays played matriarch Kim Sullivan Hughes from the character’s debut in 1972 till the show was canceled in 2010. She was never nominated for a Daytime Emmy.
Deidre Hall has played psychiatrist Dr. Marlena Evans since the character’s debut in 1976 with minor breaks. She contended for Supporting Actress in 1980 and for Actress in 1984 and 1985.
John Beradino began as Dr. Steve Hardy, the chief of staff at General Hospital in Port Charles, on the first episode of the series in 1963 and continued in the role until his death from pancreatic cancer in 1996. During his 33-year run, he reaped three consecutive Best Actor nods (1974-1976).
Leslie Charleson has been playing Port Charles cardiologist Dr. Monica Quartermaine since 1977. She has yet to win a Daytime Emmy despite four bids for Best Actress (1980, 1982, 1983 and 1995).
Doug Davidson has been playing Paul Williams since 1978. His character began as a detective and is now police chief in Genoa City. He has reaped three lead bids -- 2003, 2010, 2013 -- as well as a supporting nod in 2011.
Patricia Bruder began playing loyal volunteer Ellen Lowell Stewart in 1960 after the original actress, Wendy Drew, was dropped. While she played the part for 35 years until the character was written out in 1995, Bruder never reaped an Emmy bid.
Michael Storm began playing Dr. Larry Wolek, who rose to become Chief of Staff at Llanview Hospital, in 1969 after the first two actors (including his brother, Jim Storm) left the role. His character was written out of the show in 2004 with Storm never being nominated.
Marie Masters played the ambitious and tragedy-prone Dr. Susan Stewart from 1968 until 1979 and then returned in 1986 staying until the final show in 2010. Though her character was a fan favorite, she was never nominated for an acting Emmy. However, Masters did win back-to-back Emmys in 2001 and 2002 as part of the writing team.
Melody Thomas Scott has played Nikki Newman since 1979 taking her character from a stripper to interim editor-in-chief of “Restless Style” magazine. She contended for Best Actress just once, in 1999.
Jacklyn Zeman has played nurse Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Spencer since 1977. She left the show in 2010, only to return as a recurring character in 2013. She contended in supporting in 1981, 1995 and 1997 as well as for lead in 1998.
Eileen Herlie played Pine Valley boarding house and boutique owner Myrtle Fargate from 1976 until her death in 2008. Beginning in 1983, she lost four consecutive races for Best Supporting Actress.
Colleen Zenk played fashion designer and businesswoman Barbara Ryan from 1978 until the show’s end in 2010. She lost all three of her Emmy bids -- Supporting Actress in 2001 and Actress in 2002 and 2011.
Kate Linder created the character of Esther Valentine, maid and friend of Katherine Chancellor as well as an alcohol abuse counselor in 1982. She has provided comic relief for more than three decades but has yet to be nominated for a Daytime Emmy.
James Reynolds' portrayal of police commissioner Sam Carver on 'Days of Our Lives' marks the longest tenure of an African American actor in daytime history. He lost his 2004 bid for Supporting Actor. He was nominated in lead in 1991 for “Generations."
Don McLaughlin played attorney Chris Hughes for three decades from the time of the show's debut in 1956. He was never nominated for an Emmy.
Zap2it: You've left and returned to "All My Children" several times. Now that you're back for its online life, how do you assess how soap operas have gone?
Vincent Irizarry: This is such an important genre. It has a history that goes back to the beginning of broadcasting. "Guiding Light" was the longest-running show in broadcasting, and you think about not only the millions of people who have been entertained by the genre but also the probable millions who have been employed by it throughout all these shows.
When I first started on "Guiding Light" in 1984, I think there were 12 or 14 soaps at the time. As the years went on, we started to see them get whittled down, and it's tough.
Zap2it: What's your recollection of the time when ABC canceled "All My Children" and its Online Network mate "One Life to Live"?
Vincent Irizarry: I don't know why it happened the way it did. From all appearances, it seems like it was terribly mishandled. Being there at the epicenter while it was happening, it was confounding to all of us. We were like, "What is going on?" It was really disheartening to see ["All My Children"] come to that end, and it just seemed so unnecessary. It never should have happened.
So all of us on the show are grateful, and the audience is just overwhelmingly excited that this has happened. This is due in great part to them, because of the fact that they were so vigilant; they were such staunch loyalists of the show.
"My advice is: Don’t marry somebody in advertising. You know, it helps to have a spouse who understands what you do, and who is either a part of the world or just understands it and is very nonchalant about it, I guess. I’m married to an actor, so he gets it. I don’t think my husband ever watched love scenes, because he didn’t have to, he didn’t particularly want to. But he understands what it is."
"A producer said, 'I want you to lose weight.' And I said, 'I weigh'— whatever I weighed at the time, 120 pounds or something, which was a perfectly acceptable weight, and I’d been on the show for a number of years at that point. I thought it was rude of him to say it. I wasn’t fat. I was never skinny, skinny, skinny. But I had a very acceptable body. And I was upset with him, that he did that. And I did not lose the weight."
"The producer who hired me, actually, I used to come to work in sneakers and pigtails. And she looked at me one day and said, 'Would Joan Crawford come to work like that?' She was kind of kidding. But I think she really did want me to get dressed up just to walk down the street."
Over the last 24 hours, Irizarry took to his facebook page to recommend and urge fans and colleagues to submit the name of legendary All My Children and One Life to Live creator Agnes Nixon to become a Kennedy Center Honoree!
Irizarry posted: “Please read, everyone, regarding Agnes Nixon! Someone sent me this link this morning on Twitter to submit a recommendation for the next Kennedy Center Honors, awarded by the President each year to those who have committed their lives in excellence for the arts. Last year’s honorees were Dustin Hoffman, Led Zeppelin, David Letterman, Buddy Guy, and Natalia Makarova. I’ve already submitted my choice for AGNES NIXON, truly one of the great storytellers of our time, and pioneer of broadcasting in television, who has recently transitioned successfully, once again as a pioneer, from TV to New Media with the new incarnations of both All My Children & One Life to Live for the internet. Join me in supporting our great national treasure, Agnes Nixon, by submitting your own recommendation for her to receive this illustrious honor. This could be our collective thank you to Ms. Nixon for all the years of joy she has brought to countless millions of us; throughout the many generations. Very few could possibly deserve it more!”
As Jess Walton noted in the tribute episode to the late Jeanne Cooper on The Young and the Restless, the series will eventually deal with the death of Katherine Chancellor and are deciding how best to craft the story.
Of course, the natural thing would be to develop a story on who inherits the Chancellor fortune, company, mansion, etc, and that would mean bringing back the character of Katherine’s son, Tucker McCall last played by Stephen Nichols.
According to the latest issue of Soap Opera Uncensored, “Insiders report that Tucker is returning to Genoa City long term but he won’t be played by fan fave Stephen Nichols, who returned recently for Jeanne Cooper’s tribute episode." Says a mole, “They’re working on finding someone to play him since Nichols will not be returning.”
Nick and Sharon's daughter on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS is going to be looking a little different very soon. Due to scheduling issues, Alyvia Alyn Lind will be unavailable for an upcoming summer storyline, so the soap has recast the role of Faith with Mckenna Grace. "I have a new little daughter now," says Sharon Case (Sharon). "She's very cute and sweet. She's not nervous at all. She didn't have to warm up. She's very confident and has a big personality." Look for Lind to make her final appearance on Tuesday, July 2, and Grace to debut on Friday, July 12.
Pictures recently started popping up on social media sites of THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS's Michael Damian (ex-Danny), Patty Weaver (ex-Gina) and Quinn Redeker (ex-Rex) on the set. Is there an on-air Romalotti family reunion in the works? Well, the answer is yes and no. While the trio of actors appeared camera-ready in the pictures, a Y&R rep says that they were at the studio to shoot a Web tribute to their late pal and co-star Jeanne Cooper (Katherine).
THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Diana DeGarmo (ex-Angelina) married Ace Young on Saturday, June 1, at the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel in Los Angeles, CA according to People Magazine.
Some of her Y&R co-stars attended the ceremony, including Christian Jules LeBlanc (Michael), who tweeted both his congratulations and that the bride looked "Stunning!"
