A smattering of Emmy make-goods and perhaps a bit of prognosticating, winners of the 2014 Television Critics Association Awards run the gamut from the expected (True Detective and Orange Is the New Black) to complete surprises (RuPaul's Drag Race).
Perhaps the biggest referendum among the 13 honorees is The Good Wife. The CBS drama, coming off of a critically-lauded sixth season, earned the kudo for outstanding achievement in drama. That honor comes just a week after its absence from the list of Emmys best drama nominees was called out as one of the bigger snubs. ("I admit it, I'm still really pissed," CBS chairman Nina Tassler told the same crowd just days earlier.)
The Good Wife was one of just three broadcast series getting any love during Saturday's private ceremony at the Beverly Hilton. Fox's COSMOS: A SpaceTime Odyssey earned a news and information nod, and NBC's Saturday Night Live walked away with the Heritage Award.
HBO's True Detective and Veep were the only series to get multiple awards. Matthew McConaughey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus walked away with the TCA Awards' lone acting kudos; True Detective scored a win for miniseries (despite its series status at the Emmys), and Veep shared a comedy victory with FX's Louie.
Orange Is the New Black scored outstanding new program, RuPaul's Drag Race got the top honor in reality and Breaking Bad received a warm TCA goodbye during its final year of eligibility. The late AMC drama was named program of the year for the second year in a row.

The Facebook page for Severin Films posted the below photo today. Accompanying the gruesome and bizarre image it reads: “Severin Films original documentary LOST SOUL coming soon.” Filmmaker Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) commented beneath the photo shortly after it was posted. He said:
"Welcome to the ‘house of pain’. You’re looking at the miracle of birth, the moment of creation itself – courtesy of Dr Moreau’s ground breaking work on unraveling the secrets of the human genome – although this rare behind the scenes still scarcely conveys the full horror and intensity of the moment as originally conceived. The mutant mother has just given birth to something entirely new, something that will live in our nightmares…"
What does this all mean? Well, Severin’s David Gregory directed a documentary about the arduous journey Richard Stanley embarked on in the ’90s to bring The Island of Dr. Moreau to the screen. If you’re not familiar with this 1996 film’s background: Stanley spent years of his life developing the project for New Line and just days into photography, he was fired and replaced by John Frankenheimer. The script was changed, cast alterations were made and everything Stanley sought to do with the film turned into the train wreck that made its way to the screen with Marlon Brando, David Thewlis and Val Kilmer.
The doc is playing at FrightFest UK – you can read more about it right here! The film premieres August 24th. Hopefully we’ll see it hitting the U.S. festival circuit soon.
Over the past two years, Keke has appeared in three Lifetime original movies — Abducted: The Carlina White Story, CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, and The Trip to Bountiful. Keke discussed the upcoming Lifetime Whitney Houston biopic and revealed why she decided against it.
“Initially, I was thinking about the Whitney Houston [Biopic] … to play Whitney,” Keke said. “But I don’t know if that was a story I wanted to tell, because the family’s not involved, and that’s a big part for me. If you’re going to do a movie or biopic about someone, the family needs to be involved, because you want it as honest as possible. I think that's what didn’t make me go for it.”
Keke, who is friends with Bobbi Kristina, also weighed in on her harsh words for Angela Bassett for not considering casting her to play the role of her mother in the Lifetime biopic.
“I can’t say that everything said was perfectly said or anything like that, but I can understand her frustration. I think it came more from the family not being involved at all… It feels as if you’re trying to use the name but you’re not really even caring about the people that are gonna be affected by it, like the family.”

Image may be NSFW. Clik here to view. The contestants on the first episode of VH1's reality show Dating Naked, in which couples court in the nude, were primarily concerned with one thing: where to keep their eyes.
The first daters, Joe, 24, and Wee Wee, 36, who would each go out with two other people during the course of the episode, exchanged brief hellos before taking off all their clothes and reconvening on an empty, remote beach for their initial rendezvous.
'I'm most worried about getting a little excited, you know?' Joe said as he stripped down. 'I will just try not to think about it. I'll probably think about elephants or like monkeys or something like that - and just look her straight in the eye.'

Upon initially getting a full view of each others' birthday suits, it's obvious how awkward they both feel - though neither attempts to shield their blurred-for-television parts with their hands.
After a second of nervous laughter, they lean in for a painful-to-watch hug, in which only their shoulders and arms touch.
Joe then says: 'What the hell is going on? It's like you're naked and I'm naked, and I didn't even get to buy you a drink first.'
After the meeting, the show cuts to a confessional, and Joe admits he definitely saw Wee Wee 'checking [him] out' and 'staring at [his] genitals.'

Wee Wee, who admits she hasn't had sex in more than a year, then contradicts him in her own private confession: 'I didn't even focus on the penis. I just saw his testicles and was like, "Uhh, now where should I look?"'
But they soon get even more of an eyeful: For their ocean-side date, the couple Zorbed around the sand and in the water.
Zorbs are giant, see-through balls (this show makes it too easy), in which people can roll around inside. The contraptions ensure you get an all-angle view of the person inside.
'My first thought when I saw the ball was, "What if I have to fart?"' Joe said. 'I'm gonna hold it in. I mean, you can hold it in. But it looks like fun.'
Joe and Wee Wee go in one at a time, and as one of them tumbles around, the other pushes from the outside.
The show then takes an emotional turn, when they go back to chairs on the beach, and both Wee Wee and Joe talk about what they want in a partner. Wee Wee, more than anything, wants children.
Wee Wee starts crying during her confessional when she brings up the possibility of not having kids. 'I really want a family of my owns,' she says.
Then Joe drops his own shocking news: He got married when he was 19, divorced five months later, and then got bacterial meningitis.
The night goes well, but Joe and Wee Wee still have two more dates to go on.

The next day, Joe meets Jasmine, a gorgeous 20-something from Israel. He says that Jasmine's beauty definitely takes his mind off Wee Wee, especially as they go boogie boarding - an activity he calls 'very sexual.'
Meanwhile, Wee Wee meets Jack, a zany 20-something. She immediately notices he's pale and not completely naked: he's wearing Converse tennis shoes. Wee Wee is turned off.
The pair has a date making body art. They pour paint over one another and Wee Wee can't help but notice that 'Jack is packing.' Still, she can't take her mind off Joe.
All four of the daters later meet up for an intimate, clothed drinks and dinner, and Wee Wee is nervous Jasmine will 'be skinny' or 'have big boobs.' Unfortunately, both her fears are realized.
Before any food is even eaten, Joe and Jasmine are naked in the pool together, as a sad Wee Wee looks on.

For their third and final dates, Joe goes out with Chrissy and Wee Wee meets Justice.
The first couple does high-speed water sports, while the latter goes bird-watching.
While Joe finds Chrissy, who's a professional violinist, 'beautiful,' the pair lacks the spark of the first two dates. It's obvious Jasmine is still on Joe's mind.
Justice, when he meets Wee Wee, immediately tells her she's 'tiny and pretty' and she says she finds him handsome, but, again, the sparks don't fly as they walk through the jungle.
'His bird was the only bird that I actually saw today,' said Wee Wee of Justice's, ahem, anatomy.
Now all six of the contestants go back to the villa, and drama ensues. Will Joe pick Jasmine over Wee Wee? Will Jasmine hit on Justice? Will any of the other contestants get together once they see each other naked? And, most importantly, will Jack remove his Chuck Taylors?
Sophie Turner has moved past the negativity towards her "Game of Thrones" character Sansa Stark.Turner explained why many find Sansa annoying or unlikeable and it has nothing to do with the character herself.
"I think it's because people see their own faults in her character, and they don't like facing their own weaknesses," Turner told Nylon. "I think if anyone was a 13-year-old girl put in her situation, they would probably act exactly the same. When I was younger, Maisie, who plays my sister, and I were in scenes together and people loved her character and they hated mine, and it really used to affect me."
Turner enjoys her storyline and the transformation of Sansa. Though her character is still very young, she's come to turns with the "Game of Thrones" and knows she's a key player.
"I really like the fact that she is quite a silent character," Turner said. "If she had spoken up in court at any point she would have gotten herself killed. She is being compliant with the people she hates just so that she can bide her time and then she can actually get her own back. It's fun because then a lot of the acting is in the face, and not in the words, which is nice for me to experiment with."
However, Turner admitted she isn't sure she would've been a "Game of Thrones" fan before joining the production. Turner was 13-years-old when she started working on the set, and wasn't allowed to read the novels except for Sansa's point-of-view chapters.
"The idea of medieval fantasy never quite intrigued me but I think because there has been a lot of hype about it, I may have watched an episode to see whether it got me," Turner told Nylon. "Because you're in it, you have no outside perspective, so I have no idea if it's actually a good show or not!"
Congratulations Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo! ET confirms that the two just exchanged their vows at Flora Farms in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

E! News reports, "Aside from Coco Rocha, the majority of the bridesmaids were Victoria Secret models and they wore white dresses. Meanwhile, the groomsmen sported black Hawaiian print shirts and black trousers."

The couple asked their guests not to take any pictures of the wedding. US Weekly reports that the couple also asked their guests to make a donation to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in lieu of wedding gifts. The bride and groom will celebrate tonight before heading off for their honeymoon in South Africa.
Known for TV shows with cult followings, Joss Whedon would only get involved in "Marvel's The Avengers" if he had a script he believed in. Unfortunately, that meant trashing the draft by Zak Penn that Disney was sitting on.
Whedon was brought into the project at a late date, as recounted in "Joss Whedon: The Biography" by Amy Pascale, which comes out on August 1. It was during an initial interview with Kevin Feige, president of production at Marvel Studios, that he saw Penn's script and passed judgment.
"I don't think you have anything," Whedon told Feige. “You need to pretend this draft never happened.”
"There was a script," Whedon acknowledged in a later interview with GQ. "There just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of."
Feige and company may have been displeased to hear this, but people took Whedon seriously. After all, he was the genius behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," "Dollhouse," and "Cabin In The Woods," all critically acclaimed (if not always successful) genre redefiners marked by witty dialogue, as well as smaller creative projects like "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." He had comics credibility, too, being a long time fan, a candidate to direct or direct comic movies dating back to "X-Men" in 2000, and the writer of an excellent run on "Astonishing X-Men" comics.
Whedon went home from his meeting with Feige and wrote five pages of material explaining his plan for the Avengers, also coming up with the tagline: "The Avengers: Some Assembly Required" — riffing on the "Avengers Assemble" slogan from the comic books.
Marvel quickly signed him up to write and direct the movie, stipulating only that he include the Avengers and trickster god Loki, with a battle among superheros in the middle and an epic battle against villains at the end, and that he get the movie out in time for a May 2012 release.
The cast and crew loved it, as actor Clark Gregg told Pascale:
“[The script] was funny and still tongue-in-cheek and really got the tone, the Tony Stark tone of the Marvel universe, and still furthered and explored each one of those characters and those relationships. I found out later from other people involved that had the same reaction—like, oh, wow. Oh, wow. Everybody gets to play. Everybody gets to play, and it’s going to be better than anything we reasonably hoped for.”
Critics liked it, as the resulting movie earned a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences liked it, too, leading to a $1.5 billion global gross, the third-highest-grossing movie ever.
As for Penn, a veteran superhero scriptwriter whose record includes underwhelming movies like "Elektra" and "X-Men: The Last Stand," he seems relatively composed about getting trashed by Whedon.
"We could have collaborated more, but that was not his choice. He wanted to do it his way, and I respect that. I mean, it's not like on the 'Hulk ,' where I got replaced by the lead actor," Penn told GQ, referring to Edward Norton's takeover of screenwriting duties on that film. "That was an unusual one. This was more normal."
Whedon shared a story credit with Penn but took the screenplay credit for himself.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s son still has no idea who his mum is – four years after his birth, the youngster’s family admitted last night.
The Real Madrid and Portugal star’s sister Elma said Cristiano Jnr, dubbed Cristianinho, has stopped asking about the woman, believed to be a surrogate mother.
She added: “Once we told him she was in Heaven, but my brother and mum asked us not to repeat it.
"We say now his mum went travelling . He doesn’t ask anymore.”
Questions about the woman surfaced again last week when Ronaldo’s mum Dolores Aveiro released an official biography in which she revealed she went to the US to pick up Cristianinho after his 2010 birth.
She said Ronaldo, 29, told her: “The mum will never be known.”
Dolores lives in Madrid with her son to help him bring up his boy.
Her biographer Paulo Sousa Costa hinted Ronaldo may wed girlfriend Irina Shayk.
He said: “Dolores knows sooner or later he’ll get married.”
The year-old cable network gives an early greenlight to the co-production and also acquires reality series "The Operatives."
Plenty of young networks don't keep the series from their launch, but Pivot is still very fond of Please Like Me. The network announced a third-season pickup for the dramedy at the start of Friday's panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
"I'm thrilled to announce that Please Like Me is coming back for a third season," said Pivot executive vp originals Belisa Balaban. "Josh Thomas' work is a true revelation of the soul of his generation — messy and complicated, smart yet naive, wickedly self-aware and unapologetically hopeful. We're delighted to continue our collaboration with ABC Australia on the show."
Pivot came on board with Please Like Me after its first season aired in Australia, where it also films, and the network has since become a production partner in the series. It stands out among the bulk of Pivot's other offerings — news, reality and acquisitions — as its scripted centerpiece. (Stanley Tucci starrer Fortitude will come to the network in 2015 after its original run on U.K. broadcaster Sky.)
As for how this process has changed since the stateside upstart came on board, Please Like Me creator, star and writer Thomas was very candid about his initial apprehension. "Last time I was here, it was a new relationship," he said of his first TCA visit in 2013. "I was thinking 'Who are these guys, and are they going to f— me?' And they didn't. They're quite lovely."
The sophomore run of Please Like Me starts Aug. 8 on Pivot.
Other news Pivot brought out on Friday was the order for new unscripted original The Operatives. The series, acquired from Zodiak Rights, follows elite, radical conservationists who take on the world's worst eco offenders.
Ugh Jason/Jessica. Well...took seven seasons but we finally saw Laffy have sex for like...2 seconds. LMAO @ the entire Republican Bush fundraiser scene, Mrs Mills clearly went to the 'Ms Suzuki school of running in fucking heels like an idiot.' Also lol @ Pam's "I'm a Republicunt!"

The 'Fight For This Love' hitmaker tied the knot with her boyfriend of three months Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini on the Caribbean island of Mustique earlier this month. Only her mother Joan Callaghan and assistant Lily England were among the handful of guests at the secret ceremony.
Most of Cole's friends and family were reportedly surprised by the wedding news and now the couple is hunting for venues in London to toast their marriage with their loved ones.
A source tells Britain's Sunday Mirror, "Cheryl and Jean-Bernard took everyone by surprise when they announced they were married. A lot of her family haven't even met the guy, and some were upset about missing the big day. So they want to do something to make up for things... It will also be a great opportunity for family and friends of both sides to get to know each other."
Ex-Destiny's Child singer Farrah Franklin was arrested in South Carolina early Sunday morning for disorderly conduct ... TMZ has learned and our sources tell us alcohol was definitely involved.
Franklin -- who who spent 5 months with the group in 2000 before Beyonce and Kelly Rowland gave her the boot -- was booked into the Horry County Detention Center in Conway around 5AM.
So far, it's unclear what led to the arrest ... but were told she was ticketed for disorderly conduct.
Hours before, Franklin happily posted a picture on the beach.
She was released Sunday afternoon on bond.
This is not Franklin's first arrest for flying off the handle. She was popped in 2011 in L.A. for disorderly conduct ... and we're told booze was also involved. She claimed she was the victim of racial profiling. src
[WARNING: Spoilers from Sunday's episode of True Blood, "Lost Cause."]
The tension between Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) and James (Nathan Parsons) reached another level in Sunday’s True Blood.
The pair’s connection was hinted at in previous episodes, with James admitting to “groovin’ on” Lafayette in last Sunday’s hour. When Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) gives James the cold shoulder yet again at Bon Temps’ mainstreaming party, he goes to a sympathetic Lafayette and the pair end up having sex. Jessica walks in on them and breaks up with James.
Parsons tells The Hollywood Reporter it’s the last viewers will see of the James-Jessica romance.“The line is drawn after this episode. Now we’ll start to see more of Lafayette and l together, and Jessica has another thing she’s going to start dealing with,” he says.
The actor points out that this intimate a male homosexual relationship has been rare on True Blood and that Lafayette’s scenes with Jesús (Kevin Alejandro) in previous seasons were less physical. He tells THR it was a new acting challenge for him, but that working with Ellis this season made it more natural. “It helped immensely to know him and to trust him and trust each other that we’re going to do this right,” he says.
He talks with THR about the sex scene, filming with Ellis and his Jim Morrison influences.
What attracts James and Lafayette to each other?
I think they’re kind of of similar minds. James is a flower child himself. He’s a hippie, he’s free love. The trick with James is, though he’s a pacifist, he’s still a vampire, which is not a peaceful thing to be. This inner conflict that he always has is externalized with Jessica, when she’s getting upset with him. He’s just trying to be the right person for Jess, and she keeps blowing him off. Lafayette’s the only one who has the interest and takes the time to say, "What’s wrong, what’s going on with you?" There’s a mutual connection where they both just want to have fun and be easy, love each other, take care of each other.
James became a vampire because of intolerance to homosexuality in the 1970s. Will he face it again in present-day Bon Temps?
Because the town is already going through so much because of this vampire apocalypse, basically, no matter what your preference is, if you look out for and care about each other, they’re going to overlook it. There’s a lot more that could have been discovered and gone over with that -- there’s just way too much that needs to happen. There is still some other trouble that arises, but that’s not till later episodes. It’s nothing related specifically to sexuality and to gender. It has much more to do with the overarching problems that vampires cause.
You’ve filmed almost exclusively with Nelsan this season. What is it like working with him?
He’s fantastic. The very first episode, the scene between the two of us was my first day ever on the set, and so right off the bat I knew working with him was awesome. He’s brilliant, just the way that he plays around with the scenes, with the words -- he’s so free when he’s in that character. What he just naturally brings to the character is so free, it allows you permission to do that yourself. It forces you as an actor to be completely present and responsive. You’re not sure if he’s going to start dancing, or what.
This episode is a turning point in Lafayette and James’ relationship. What was most difficult about shooting those scenes?
We just had to be really careful about how we went about it. We didn’t want it to be uncomfortable to watch or over the top. It has to be something that is seemingly organic and loving, instead of just having sex for the sake of having sex. I think that was the difficult line to walk. It comes out of nowhere and we have to do it tastefully, and we all have to be comfortable with what’s happening. But Howard [Deutch], the director, was great about it. Nelsan and I just went along for the ride, and I think it turned out really well.
And this story is important and should be told and needs to be shared. It’s a story that’s being told all over the place, and TV doesn’t pay enough attention to it. The "Do I love this guy or love this girl?" and "Is this right or is this wrong?" becomes more important than the act itself, and that I think was really well done by the writer [Craig Chester] and Howard and Nelsan and myself.
How did you approach shooting their sex scene?
It was a full-night shoot, and we had a bunch of group stuff to do earlier that day. There were 20 actors there and we shot all their stuff, and then for the last four or five hours it was just me and Nelsan. I think once we got over the craziness of organizing the extras, and doing the group shots and the Steadicam work, we were able to focus in on the intimate moments without the distractions. Once you break the ice physically, then it all becomes easier, and you realize it is just two people. There’s another 200 people in the crew, of course. But in that moment, it’s really just about two people and a shared connection. That right there made the whole thing work out -- that we’ll get to the physical stuff, that’s a given, but before that and after that, there are little moments of true connection that happen, and they just escalate and escalate.
You replaced Luke Grimes in the role. What did you bring to playing James?
He’s a Jim Morrison type, so I started reading Jim Morrison’s biography. There were all these little details. He was always really soft-spoken, never raised his voice. Luke did something similar, but they also talked about the way that Jim Morrison would stand sometimes, the way he’d sometimes suck in his cheeks, all his interesting quirks. I thought, "Huh, maybe I can work these in here. Maybe I can play with the idea that Jim Morrison is alive, he just got turned into a vampire."
