Exciting news JJJ Book Club members — one of our fave authors, Melissa de la Cruz was just announced as the writer behind the new Descendants book!

The book, which serves as a prequel to the upcoming DCOM, is called “Isle of the Lost” and will hit shelves on May 5th, 2015.

“Isle of the Lost” summary: Legend has it that long ago, the most infamous villains were imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost, cut off from the rest of the world as a punishment for their misdeeds. In this dark and dreary place, the likes of Maleficent, Jafar, Cruella de Vil and the Evil Queen reside and evil reigns supreme. Joan Rivers uses transphobic slur to describe Michelle Obama

$

In a brief video reportedly shot earlier this week in New York, 81-year-old Joan Rivers calls First Lady Michelle Obama "a transgender," joking that this makes Barack Obama the first gay president.

After being asked about the U.S.'s likelihood of having either a woman or a gay president in the near future , Rivers replied, "We already have that with Obama. You know Michelle is a tranny."

The unidentified journalist tries to clarify, asking, "I'm sorry. She's a what?"

"A transgender," Rivers replies. "We all know."

Conservatives have long made jokes insinuating that the First Lady is actually a transgender woman, but it's not often that a liberal-minded comedian — let alone one who credits much of her success to her devoted LGBT fan base — make this type of uninspired joke.

Similarly, liberal individuals have often joked that Ann Coulter is transgender. These types of "jokes" are designed to suggest that being trans is something to be ashamed of.

Referring to cisgender (nontrans) women as trans "only furthers the marginalization of women and transgender people," wrote Vincent Paolo Villano of the National Center for Transgender Equality in a 2012 op-ed for The Advocate.

"Judgments against Ann Coulter because of how she looks are also an attack on transgender people," Villano wrote later in that op-ed. "The difference is transgender people often can’t shrug their shoulders and move on the way Ann Coulter can. Indeed, this kind of prejudice has a role in the staggering rate of suicide attempts among transgender people: 41% (compared to 1.6% of the general population). While Ann Coulter gets to stir controversy like it’s a game, everyday transgender Americans have to deal with the bias and violence at the core of these messages."

It should be noted that even if Mrs. Obama was a transgender woman, that would not make the President gay.

Amber Rose Glad She 'Escaped' Kanye West

Amber Rose was put in the hot seat during the Wendy Williams show Wednesday. The 30-year-old beauty is in New York promoting her next film, "School Dance," directed by Nick Cannon.

The host who is known for bringing up juicy gossip could not help but ask Rose about her ex-beau, Kanye West. She and West dated from 2008 to 2010, and shortly after, he started dating Kim Kardashian. She said later that West cheated on her with the curvy reality star.

"She was sending pictures, and I was like, 'Kim, just stop. Don't be that person. I thought at least she'd be woman enough to respond to me. She never responded. It's very important that us women stick together and we don't f--k each other over like that," Rose said in an interview with Star magazine.

Williams asked Rose what she thought about Kardashian and West’s relationship, and Rose laughed, saying nervously, “That’s none of my business, Wendy.” But when Williams asked her if she was glad she escaped, Rose quickly smiled while saying, “yes,” and proceeding to laugh again. The audience clapped and cheered until Williams moved on to a less personal subject.

'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' Movie Trilogy Will Shoot In The U.K.

Among the few details we know about WB's planned Harry Potter offshoot Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film, is that the story will begin in New York, seventy years before Harry Potter arrived at Hogwarts. But they won't be filmed there. Today brings word that the film(s) will shoot in Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K.

Variety posted the update today, stating that Warner Bros. has confirmed that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will shoot at their studios in the U.K. The screenplay is to be written by penned by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who wrote the book on which these movies are based. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is actually a reference guide in the form of a Hogwarts school textbook, written by the fictitious Newt Scamander, an adventurous wizard who traveled the word studying magical beasts well before Harry Potter's time.

At this point, the studio update is the latest piece to the puzzle as we await news on casting and a director for the first film. We know that WB is planning three mega-movies based on the book, the first of which is expected to arrive in theaters November 18, 2016.

The story will begin in New York seven decades before Harry Potter arrives at Hogwarts. Neither a sequel nor a direct prequel to the Harry Potter story, the films will center on Fantastic Beasts writer Newt Scamander, and will incorporate the familiar laws and customs of the hidden wizarding world that exists in Rowling's Harry Potter series.

As mentioned, this story isn't directly connected to Harry Potter in that it takes place so long before he and his friends were around. But we're still hopeful that we might see appearances -- if not direct involvement -- from any Harry Potter characters (or distant relatives of characters) who may have been around during Newt's day. Albus Dumbledore would have been in his late thirties during the time that Newt was just starting to write Fantastic Beasts (presumably on or around 1918, according to Fantastic Beasts). Whether or not Dumbledore plays a role in these films is unknown, but fingers are most definitely crossed, as it would be pretty fantastic to get to know the wizard during his early (relatively) adult years. And Dumbledore did write the forward to Fantastic Beasts, so we know he's a fan of Newt's work.

As for which magical beasts might be featured in the films, there's no shortage of material to work with there. While we've seen dragons, hippogriffs, thestrals, merpeople and other beasts featured in the Harry Potter movies, there are even more referenced in Fantastic Beasts that have yet to be brought to life in the cinematic version of Rowling's world.

We'll be sure to share any further updates on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as soon as we have any. In the meantime, take it from Dumbledore: Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus.

33 Breakup Albums You Should Be Listening to Instead of Robin Thicke's 'Paula'

Plenty of fans are listening to Robin Thicke's new album, Paula, and thinking, "This marriage may not be salvageable." And by that, they mean the sacred contract between performer and audience, not the one between Thicke and his estranged wife, Paula Patton — although that's obviously not going so well, either.

In devoting an entire concept album to his hopes of winning back Patton, Thicke has come up with some of the most laughably quotable lyrics of the 21st century, proving that the lines between pathos and comedy really are blurred.

He's actually indulging in a fine pop tradition, actually — The Divorce Album — although most other stars who've recorded one did it to exorcise their bitterness and not try to "Get Her Back." None of the other practitioners of the form ever wrote lyrics quite as imploring as "Ooh, turn the porch light on/At least open the doggy door" or "I should have brought you roses… and rubbed your toesies."

Are you nursing your own romantic wounds, and looking for an album about how you can do better than your ex? You can do better than Paula. Here's a sampling of some other stars' (far superior) autobiographical breakup albums:

Adele, 21

Adele was "miserable and lonely" — duh — when she and Dan Wilson wrote "Someone Like You" about the love of her life, a decent guy who, as it indicates in the song, had not just moved on but already gotten married. This muse was the subject of nearly every other song on her mega-selling collection of laments, too. Saturday Night Live had it right with that hilariously weepy sketch: 21 is what you put on if you need a good, self-pitying cry that'll last 45 minutes longer than the one you'd get out of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me."

Nas, Life is Good

"I guess this is my Here, My Dear album, [like] Marvin Gaye made," Nas told The Guardian upon this record's 2012 release. On the front cover, he has the green wedding dress worn by his ex-wife, Kelis, strategically draped over his knee. "I found it in my house and thought, it's going somewhere! Either on the cover of my album, or burning in a garbage can."

Amy Winehouse, Back to Black

Hey, we told her Blake Fielder-Civil was no good. But she sure got a heck of an album out of that relationship, before diving back into it with him a few months after the album's release helped fuel a pattern of self-destructiveness that led to her never making an album again. It's harder to find anything funny in the album since her death, but there was a good deal of wit as well as woe in her breakup laments.

Taylor Swift, Speak Now

"Dear John," Swift's epic farewell ballad to John Mayer, had such sizzle, you can still get second-degree burns just from listening to it today. "Back to December" is rumored to be about Taylor Lautner. But not all her best breakup songs are so specifically tied to one celebrity ex. "Last Kiss" masterfully evokes the memory of the final clinch you didn't know would be the final clinch, and you're really better off not knowing whether such a beautiful song was inspired by Joe Jonas or not.

Kanye West, 808s & Heartbreak

It's a bit of a death album, too, with West's mother just having passed away, but mostly it's the mother of all severely Auto-Tuned ex-fiancée bashings. Rolling Stone called it "Kanye's would-be Here, My Dear or Blood on the Tracks, a mournful song-suite that swings violently between self-pity and self-loathing." He seems to have rebounded a little since.

New Photos & International DVD Art For "Maps To The Stars"

Even though the Cannes Film Festival described David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars as a satire of Hollywood a la Robert Altman’s The Player, the filmmaker has a less ironic view of the material. “This is not a satire, I’m really just observing,” Cronenberg told Total Film recently. “I feel like a scientist or a researcher. That's the most honest, neutral way of looking at things. I'm not angry at Hollywood. I don't have a statement to make about Hollywood."

While there’s no official U.S. release date for the film yet (it’s a good bet that it’ll be at the Toronto International Film Festival and then get a North American debut after that), internationally things are a bit different. The film is already out in France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, the Netherlands and more are getting the film in late September (it’s also a decent bet that eOne will release it here around the same time or early October). In fact, the film is even arriving in France on Blu-Ray and DVD in September too. Those DVD covers have been released as have a few new photos from the movie which you can see below.

At the photo shoot, Zooey told the mag that she thinks it is “so dumb” to worry over your clothes being from a fancy brand and also isn’t a fan of showing a lot of skin.

“There is an audience for more modest clothes,” Zooey said.

Chiquis Rivera, the daughter of the late regional Mexican star Jenni Rivera, will premiere a new single to her upcoming album on Premios Juventud award show July 17.

In January, Rivera released Paloma Blanca (White Dove), which was performed in honor of her mother. The YouTube video has reached more than 2.3 million views and Rivera, who frequently posts on social media, has more than half a million followers on Twitter and more than 600,000 followers on Instagram. The entertainer also has a web series about her life.

In her nomination of 'Song That You Can’t Get Out Of Your Head', Rivera is in competition with Prince Royce and Romeo Santos (Featuring Drake).

“I’m excited, I’m nervous,” Chiquis says of her nominations. “I definitely feel the pressure, but I work well under pressure. It’s a huge blessing. It’s so humbling … I owe it to my mom and I own it to the fans. I’ll be on stage for the very first time. It’s a huge stage. I’m going to give it my all.”

Rivera is scheduled to perform a song she penned. Rivera has made it clear that she wants to record an album. Mexican pop star Gloria Trevi provided Rivera with advice on the music business on Chiquis Confidential.

“I don’t want to look back in life and say and think, 'I should have done this or that,'” Rivera said with Billboard. “My mom never gave up and I can’t either.”

Taylor Swift Breaks All-Time Country Touring Record

$

taylor-swift-red-tour-singapore-2014-billboard-650
Taylor Swift has smashed the all-time revenue record for a single tour by a country artist with the final stats reported from her Red tour that played arenas and stadiums in four continents during a 15-month span. According to Billboard’s Boxscore archives, the tour’s overall gross of $150 million surpasses the prior country artist record held by double-billed Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Soul2Soul tour that brought in $141 million during 2006 and 2007.

The Red tour, which tops the weekly Hot Tours ranking, began last year on March 13 in Omaha, Neb. and ran for six months in North America before closing with a three-show stand in Nashville in September. In November and December, Swift traveled Down Under for a five-city jaunt through Australia and New Zealand to close out the year. She performed in London and Berlin in February to kick off the tour’s 2014 schedule, and the final trek covered six cities in Asia, beginning with a May 30 performance in Shanghai and ending on June 12 with a final concert in Singapore. The Red tour’s final box office counts total $150,184,971 in revenue from 1,702,933 sold tickets at 86 performances in 12 countries.

Swift’s tour itinerary included 15 stadiums worldwide during its run. Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. topped the list with the best box office results during the tour. The home stadium of the NFL’s New England Patriots produced the highest gross and attendance counts with $9.4 million in sales from 110,712 fans at two shows last summer (July 26-27). This is the third time the stadium has featured the country superstar in a headlining tour performance. She also played Gillette in 2010 on her Fearless tour as well as the Speak Now outing the following year. Among stadiums that hosted the tour for a single performance, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field claims the top gross and attendance counts with $4.7 million from a sellout crowd of 56,047 on July 6, 2013.

Box office results from arena performances on the Red tour place London’s O2 Arena ahead of the pack with the highest gross and attendance numbers. The London venue recorded $5.8 million in sales from 74,740 tickets sold during its five-show run (Feb. 1-2, 4, 10-11). Among the arenas that brought in the tour for just one performance, the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai tops the list based on sales of $1.8 million. The best attendance for a single performance was recorded in Fargo, North Dakota. Swift played the Fargodome on Sept. 6, 2013 with a capacity crowd of 21,073.

Rock veterans Journey and Steve Miller Band take the No. 2 Hot Tours ranking this week with $8.3 in box office sales reported from their ongoing co-headlining tour. Since kicking off on May 15, the summertime trek, primarily booked at outdoor amphitheaters, has grossed more than $17 million at 24 concerts. With Tower of Power on board as special guest, the tour will continue in North American markets through early August.

Pop star Katy Perry lands at No. 3 on the list of top-grossing touring artists with the first totals reported from her Prismatic world tour’s North American leg that began on June 22 in North Carolina. The first four venues during the summer schedule produced $7.8 million in sales from 66,542 fans at sellouts in Raleigh, Washington, D.C., Nashville and Atlanta. The 16-week run through U.S. and Canadian cities will bring the six-time Billboard Music Award winner to 47 arenas in North America through mid-October. Dates in Mexico, Australia and New Zealand are on the books for the remainder of the year, and a second trek through Europe will begin next February. The tour’s first European leg hit nine cities in the U.K. back in May.

Is Azealia "She Broke" Banks Getting Blacklisted from the Music Industry?

$
0
0

These days it seems that Youtube sensation and quick-tongued femcee Azealia Banks is being known more for sparking controversial public beefs, rather than her music. The New York city-rapper took shots (slander/insults) at yet another fellow rapper this week via Twitter. The unfortunate emcee to fall for Banks’ bait was none other than “family man” Tip “T.I.” Harris.

The drama between Azealia Banks and T.I. began over the Banks’ choice words for T.I.’s wife Tiny. Following the release of her Iggy Azalea’s and T.I.’s latest video and single No Mediocre, Banks took to her Twitter account to label his wife as basically mediocre, having a “meth face,” and could not read. The verbal onslaught on the T.I.’s wife continued, until the rapper fired back with a few choice words of his own via Instagram. Claiming that Azealia Banks was unimportant, a gremlin and threatened to end her if she spoke about his family again, the Atlanta rapper did very little to diffuse the situation. Banks responded to the rapper’s idle threats by claiming that she is going to sue him for threatening her and place him back in jail.

Although the drama seems never ending and continues to unfold via social media and TMZ, this is just another rap beef that Banks has sparked with a fellow musician over something most would overlook. Since her 212 single and video went viral, Banks has sparked public feuds with T.I.’s protégé Iggy Azalea. Started a rap beef with former Dipset rapper Jim Jones over use of the word “Vamp.” Took to Twitter to argue with Rita Ora over jelly sandals and a backstage incident during Future Music Festival. Feuded with the Stone Roses during the same festival, Lady Gaga for demo that didn’t make it to ARTPOP. Banks blasted Pharrell Williams for the poor performance of her ATMJam on the charts. She bashed European DJ duo Disclosure over a misunderstanding in an interview about a collaboration. Banks felt offended by A$AP Rocky’s less than flattering comments about black women wearing red lipstick. She also beefed with hit-maker Baauer over the misuse of a Harlem Shake Remix. Banks had choice words for Lily Allen over an old Tweet that snowballed into a Twitter war. One of the most notorious beefs with femcee Angel Haze that spawned two tracks and a warning from GLAAD for use of derogatory gay slurs during the public argument/beef.

Azealia Banks rap beefs seems to be a never-ending story over the past year and a half. Her sharp-tongue and aggressive demeanor on tracks has a direct correlation with her handling any argument in music industry drama. From 2013 to now, Banks has not held her tongue or found politically correct words for any artist that seems to offend her in any way and the recent confrontation is not a step in the right direction to build publicity for a virtually mythological debut album.

The rap industry is not a strange territory for reported disagreements, but there usually is an end to the unnecessary disagreements and beef. With the talented Azealia Banks it seems like the drama is unfortunately never-ending. Although some say that all press is good press, it is probably better to be known among fans and music lovers for taking the high-road and releasing classic material rather than taking shots at well-established musicians for notoriety.

8 reasons why it’s imperative that we DON’T encourage USA to become good at football

This World Cup has captured the imagination of the American public like no other in history, and we Brits seem to be generally of the opinion that this is a good thing – it isn’t.

While England shamefully sloped away from Brazil after finishing bottom of our group with just a single point, USA embarked on a rousing run to the last-16, where they narrowly lost to hotly-tipped Belgium after extra-time.

This run, which included knocking out Portugal in the group stages, has seen the US take football to its heart, with TV ratings hitting a record 24.7m – more than the recent World Series and NBA Finals.

However, although it’s nice to see our US-cousins finally realising what a rubbish sport baseball is, there are major concerns to consider when willing on America to embrace football…

While an occasional outburst of Americaness from Will Ferrell is great…

The rest of the time, it’s still pretty annoying

They’ve adopted a cheesy chant called ‘I believe that we will win’, which originated in Navy football back in 2003 (and was re-hashed for soccer fans in an ESPN ad).

Sooner or later, they’ll be convinced they invented chanting at ‘soccer’ matches.

Although this is a parody account, you know this is what they’re all actually thinking when a game is going on…

We know this because their commentators genuinely say stuff like ‘release the Kraken’ at free-kicks…

But more than anything, they’re becoming rather good…

Brody Jenner is speaking out! The former Hills star has been opening up recently on his new podcast, The Brody Jenner Podcast with Dr. Mike Dow.

After revealing he used to date his brother Brandon's wife Leah, Jenner admitted that he never actually dated Lauren Conrad, despite MTV portraying their relationship on camera.

It all started when Dow began to list off the names of Jenner's ex girlfriends, mentioning Avril Lavigne, Kristin Cavallari, Lauren Conrad, and Nicole Richie. Jenner interjected, saying, "That's false. Lauren Conrad and I never dated."

"Lauren and I have always been just friends," the 30-year-old went on to explain. "We worked together on a show called The Hills where we had to pretend like we were dating but we never dated."

When asked if his relationship with fellow Hills cast mate Cavallari was also staged, Kim Kardashian's stepbrother said, "I dated Kristin when we were very young … when she was on Laguna Beach and I was on a show called Princes of Malibu with Spencer Pratt … we met at a party in Hollywood … but during [The Hills] when we filmed, Kristin and I did not date, we were not hooking up."

Ariana Grande brought back the classic MTV show ‘TRL’ for one night with ‘Total Ariana Live,’ where she explained exactly how she ended up in the studio with One Direction’s Harry Styles.

The track penned by the 20-year-old Brit, titled ‘A Little Bit of Your Heart,’ will feature on Ariana’s sophomore album ‘My Everything,’ set to drop August 25. When asked how she ended up with a song written by Harry specifically for her, she revealed: “I was at the studio one day, and he was there, and literally, Johan [Carlsson] and Savan [Kotecha] were like ‘Hey, do you want to write something for Ariana?’ And he was like —” she put on a hilarious if not poorly imitated British accent “— ‘Sure, mate.’ And he just did.”

The 1D member must be as talented at writing as he is at singing, with how much Ariana praised him. “It’s a beautiful song. He’s an amazing writer,” she gushed. “It’s really beautiful. He’s amazingly talented.”

Diplo "makes songs in minutes while high"

Diplo has claimed he wrote Usher's hit 'Climax' in minutes, and that Alex Clare's track 'Too Close' came about while they were high.

In an interview with Idolator, the DJ and producer explained that "all of the best songs happen on a whim".

"When I made Alex Clare's 'Too Close,' that record didn't make the album, he got dropped, and it became a number 1 record in America," said Diplo.

"It was like, the biggest rock record of 2012. We made that high on mushrooms, not even thinking about it making the record.

"With Usher, we made 'Climax' in literally, like, ten minutes. With M.I.A., I made 'Paper Planes' on a roof in the Caribbean. No microphone covers, just recording right there outside."

Diplo has been working with Madonna on her new album. One of the tracks worked on by the pair will be called 'Bitch, I'm Madonna'.

"Those records are gonna be crazy sounding. We really pushed the envelope with some of the stuff we were doing," he said about the collaboration.

'Seinfeld' at 25: Five reasons nothing is everything

$
0
0

"Seinfeld" had nothing to say -- and that was its genius.

Other groundbreaking series make a point of stressing their inventiveness, practically shouting, "Look at me!""Seinfeld," on the other hand, blissfully took a Festivus pole to sitcom conventions, with unsympathetic characters, defiantly provincial New York interests and intricate plotting mechanisms -- and never called attention to itself.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

In fact, there was so much right about the show that it eventually became TV's No. 1 program and one of the most lauded sitcoms ever.

In the 25 years since "Seinfeld" premiered on July 5, 1989, as "The Seinfeld Chronicles," it has worked its way into pop culture -- its catchphrases still repeated, its plots still recounted, its shocking revelations about writer John Cheever and pitcher Roger McDowell still gasped about.
But enough yada, yada, yada. Here are five things that made nothing into everything:

1. No hugging, no learning. In general, pre-"Seinfeld" sitcoms included heartwarming laughs, sympathetic "aws" and lessons learned. But there were no social niceties for Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer. The quartet was so narcissistic that, when George's fiancée, Susan, died after licking defective wedding invitation envelopes in the seventh season, George and the gang shrugged and continued with their lives.

Few sitcoms have dared to follow in its coldhearted footsteps, but there are exceptions, such as "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,""Community" and "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm." (New York magazine's Matt Zoller Seitz makes the point that "Seinfeld" also paved the way for our recent bounty of coldhearted dramas.)
The new, new TV golden age

2. Four in one. Pre-"Seinfeld," most sitcoms were classic cases of simplicity: one major plot, perhaps one minor plot, play them out in 22 minutes and turn on the applause sign. "Seinfeld" sometimes had four plots -- one for each primary character -- and would put them together so Jerry's girlfriend with the real breasts (Teri Hatcher) would cross paths with Elaine in a steam room. Or aspiring hand model George would burn himself with the iron being used to smooth out Jerry's puffy shirt.

In those days, not many serialized dramas would dare attempt such plot juggling, never mind comedies. It's still more the exception than the rule.

3. New York, New York."Seinfeld" made the Big Apple the center of the sitcom universe. Suddenly it seemed like half of NBC's schedule was making ends meet in Manhattan -- "Friends,""Caroline in the City,""Mad About You,""The Single Guy,""Will & Grace" -- while ABC and CBS added to the mix with such shows as "The King of Queens,""Spin City" and "The Nanny."

New York was so prominent on '90s TV schedules that one ABC show, "It's Like, You Know" (created by "Seinfeld" writer and producer Peter Mehlman), made hay out of the concept of a New Yorker transplanted to Los Angeles. (Incidentally, for all its New Yorkiness, "Seinfeld" was shot at a studio in L.A.)

4. Heavy meta. Other sitcoms had been self-referential -- George Burns and Garry Shandling regularly broke the fourth wall in their programs -- but Jerry and his pals took meta-ness to a whole new level. Season four, in fact, was literally about a show within a show as Jerry and George pitched NBC "a show about nothing" called "Jerry" that bore eerie similarities to "Seinfeld."

However, for all of "Seinfeld's" quotation marks, it often used real people and brand names. There really is a J. Peterman catalog, New York's American League baseball team really is the Yankees and those are real cereal brands on Jerry's shelf. However, Vandelay Industries is still fictional -- we think.

5. Sponge-worthy catchphrases. Few shows have produced as many popular quotations as "Seinfeld." You're probably reciting them now: "No soup for you.""Master of your domain.""Yada yada.""Shrinkage.""Look to the cookie." You can leave more of them in the comments ... unless you're a low-talker.
