Behold, Every Horror Movie on TV This October

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
On Monday, October 13th, you’ll be able to sit down in front of your TV and enjoy a John Carpenter cult classic, a remake of a John Carpenter cult classic, an urban anthology, a zombie comedy, an animated family movie, a staple of the slasher genre, a clash of the two giants of the slasher genre, an Oscar nominee for Best Picture from the 1970s, and a cheap descendant of that movie from the 2010s.

And they’ll all be the same kind of film: horror.

October is the most wonderful time of the year for horror fans. TV networks pack their schedules with scares, allowing viewers to create their own horror marathon out of hundreds of different combinations. Below, I’ve put together a calendar of all 300+ horror films set to air on cable for the month—and looking at the list, it’s clear how incredibly versatile the definition of “horror” can be.
Consider the very first entry, airing on AMC just as the calendar flips over to October: Jurassic Park III. Is it a horror movie? A lot of people would say no. It’s a monster movie with horror elements—enough to tip the balance over into straight-up horror?

Figuring out what ties together the disparate versions of horror can be tricky. “Scary” seems like an easy enough definition, but revisit the old Bela Lugosi Dracula movies and you probably won’t find much occasion to jump or scream. There’s a darkness to the subject matter, of course. A willingness to look the worst of existence. Be it murder or monsters, the cruel depths of human weakness or the pitilessness of the supernatural, in every case you’re staring into the abyss. That abyss can stare back in any of a dozen ways, from the violent to the suspenseful to the comedic.

“Masters of Sex” star Lizzy Caplan seduces in black for the November 2014 cover story from Elle Canada. Posing poolside and in the outdoors, the actress impresses in designer looks including Louis Vuitton. In the interview, she talks about wanting to get married and have kids, but does not want people to assume that she would be the one to stay at home. She says, “Now, I could have kids and want to do that, I have no idea—but from where I sit now, that does not sound all that appealing to me. I really want kids, and I want to be fully involved in their lives, but I don’t want to sacrifice my own goals to be a mother.”

Donald Sterling and V. Stiviano reunited at his Beverly Hills mansion today -- and when Donald's wife found out ... she called police, trying to get V. arrested ... TMZ has learned.

We're told Shelly Sterling got wind of Donald and V.'s tryst ... and believed Stiviano must have broken into the house. Our Sterling sources tell us Shelly called Bev Hills PD immediately and reported a break-in.

We're told police officers responded ... and spoke to Donald and Stiviano. One source tells us V. was an "invited" guest, so ... no break-in, and no arrests.

Shelly has beef with V. ... She sued the alleged mistress, claiming she embezzled $1.8 mil from Donald ... and Shelly says half of that was hers. Shelly claims V. swindled an old man who wasn't with it.

Cops tell us V. wasn't scared off ... she stayed after they left.

For the last two years I’ve written articles recommending authors to read during the Halloween season (check out the first one here and the second here). This year, instead of novels, I’m suggesting 30 graphic novels and trade paperbacks that are perfect to get you into the Halloween spirit.

1

Vampires:

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (by Michael Burgen and José Alfonso Ocampo Ruiz):  A re-telling of the classic gothic novel.

30 Days of Night (by Steve Niles and B
en Templesmith
): An Alaskan town must survive an onslaught of vampires while the sun is down for 30 days.

American Vampire Vol. 1 (by Scott Snyder, Stephen King, and Rafael Albuquerque): A 1920’s vampire sets out for revenge against those who wronged her.

2

Zombies:

iZombie Vol 1: Dead to the World (by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred): Various supernatural characters deal with everyday life as well as unnatural threats.

Heathentown (by Corinna Sara Bechko and Gabriel Hardman): A woman visiting a small town in the Everglades discovers some deadly and unusual secrets.

Leaked Star Wars: Episode VII Footage Supposedly Reveals Luke Skywalker's Secret Refuge?!

$

0

A video was posted and quickly deleted from Youtube today that claims to contain footage from Star Wars: Episode VII. After all the concept art and set photos that have hit the internet in recently, it's possible that this is very real. Especially with the swiftness with which it was removed from the Internet.

There's also possibility it's fake. A Walt Disney watermark in the footage leads to it's authenticity, and it does (sort of) match up with rumored story details that have leaked on various sites.

The footage claims to contain our first look at Luke Skywalker's home on Skellig Michael Island. We see the hooded Jedi traversing the unique and very rocky landscape to enter a cave, which is called Luke's Refuge in the possibly leaked footage.

If this is indeed Mark Hamill, we never actually see his face as he remains hooded throughout the duration of the footage. It's also possible that this is test footage, or teaser trailer footage shot not using the actor. TechnoBuffalo, who first discovered the video reports that "It is shot on a cell phone looking at a computer screen, so the clarity is not the best. From the lighting and quickness of the images, this feels more like test footage than final shots for the film."

AWARDS SEASON POST 2014-2015: The Contenders

Best Picture (Source)
The race is most certainly on, with the early fall fests bringing everything from "Birdman" and "The Imitation Game" to "The Theory of Everything" and "Gone Girl" to the table. Subversive material from master filmmakers will give the critics groups a lot to chew on when they have their say later in the year, but broader plays like "Unbroken" and "Interstellar" could end up ticking off a lot of boxes for voters. A varied and interesting season is afoot.
Front runners:
1. "Unbroken"
2. "The Imitation Game"
3. "Interstellar"
4. "Boyhood"
5. "The Theory of Everything"

0000
Best Director(Source)
It looks to be a very filmmaker-driven season. To say nothing of the visionaries -- Iñárritu, PTA, Fincher, etc. -- even much of the "baitier" fare has star talent at the helm, whether Angelina Jolie with "Unbroken" or Christopher Nolan with "Interstellar." Watching allegiances form this year will be fun, but it's an exciting bunch.

Front runners:
1. Angelina Jolie ("Unbroken")
2. Christopher Nolan ("Interstellar")
3. Richard Linklater ("Boyhood")
4. Alejandro González Iñárritu ("Birdman")
5. Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game")

00000
Best Actor (Source)
As always, the Best Actor category is stacked. You could easily make a list of 20 gentlemen who, theoretically, have a great shot at recognition this year. The Michael Keaton welcome-back party will surely roll out the carpet, and both Eddie Redmayne and Joaquin Phoenix have delivered performances everyone will be talking about. Benedict Cumberbatch would be a fair bet for frontrunner in the early stages, while Steve Carell and Channing Tatum will surprise plenty. Oh, and Bill Murray wants to play.

Front runners:
1. Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Imitation Game")
2. Eddie Redmayne ("The Theory of Everything")
3. Steve Carell ("Foxcatcher")
4. Michael Keaton ("Birdman")
5. Timothy Spall ("Mr. Turner")

Best Actress (Source)
Julianne Moore has officially crashed the party for these ladies, landing with a performance in "Still Alice" that has many thinking she's a cinch for her first Oscar. Beyond that, what was initially a very weak field is beginning to tighten up. And the lack of competition is yielding some attention paid to interesting corners, like Gugu Mbatha-Raw's performance in "Belle," set for a Searchlight campaign. Meanwhile, Rosamund Pike's "Gone Girl" performance has landed with a cannonball in the middle of this pool.

Front runners:
1. Julianne Moore ("Still Alice")
2. Reese Witherspoon ("Wild")
3. Amy Adams ("Big Eyes")
4. Rosamund Pike ("Gone Girl")
5. Felicity Jones ("The Theory of Everything")

0000
Best Supporting Actor (Source)
The supporting categories are funny because just when they look like they're firming up, they have other cards to play. This year there are a pair of "Unbroken" performances and a handful of other unknowns waiting to make their cases alongside some electrifying work that has already played the festival circuit.

Front runners:
1. J.K. Simmons ("Whiplash")
2. Edward Norton ("Birdman")
3. Logan Lerman ("Fury")
4. Tom Wilkinson ("Selma")
5. Domhnall Gleeson ("Unbroken")

0000
Best Supporting Actress (Source)
Patricia Arquette's camp has made it official here while Jessica Chastain's might be sniffing out a win. Keira Knightley has already proven her case and Katherine Waterston makes hers at NYFF. There are a lot of different ways this race could go. Emma Stone is so deserving. Rene Russo would be a funky but valid pick. Carrie Coon is already drawing a fan club. Lots of lightning here.

Front runners:
1. Patricia Arquette ("Boyhood")
2. Jessica Chastain ("Interstellar")
3. Keira Knightley ("The Imitation Game")
4. Katherine Waterston ("Inherent Vice")
5. Emily Blunt ("Into the Woods")
Mods, I was thinking that since fall is officially here and the awards season starts next month with the Hollywood Film Festival Awards, that there could be an official monthly awards season post leading up to the Oscars. All of the sources are listed and everything is done according to the rules.

Jeremy Renner May Only Be Contracted For 2 More Marvel Films, Mentions Black Widow/Hawkeye Potential

$

Jeremy Renner indicated in an interview with the Daily Beast earlier this week that he may only have two films left in his contract with Marvel — a third Avengers movie and a potential Hawkeye-centric film. "I think most actors will sign on to do, like… Captain America 1-3 and then The Avengers 1-3, and then you’re done. For me, I signed on to The Avengers 1-3 and then Hawk-Eye, in case they want to do a Hawk-Eye spin-off," he told the publication.

Renner, who spoke with the Daily Beast while promoting his upcoming movie Kill the Messenger, also noted that Marvel has an interest in a Black Widow/Hawkeye team-up movie. When the major role Black Widow played in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was mentioned, Renner noted that, "I think that’s why they want a Hawk-Eye/Widow movie so bad."

The actor also didn't have any further comment on rumors he might appear in Captain America 3, only noting that the movie will start filming in March and there hasn't been any official conversations about his involvement in it. Renner also talked up the fun experience he had shooting the second Avengers film, which he noted will include beefed up roles for his character and Mark Ruffalo's The Hulk.

Gloria Estefan wants Ariana Grande to play her in musical 'On Your Feet'.

The 57-year-old singer would love to see the 21-year-old star take to the stage to play her in the production because she has been a big fan of the raven-haired beauty's ever since she saw her doing karaoke on a cruise ship when the 'Problem' hitmaker was just eight years old.

She explained: ''Ariana Grande would be somebody wonderful.
''I saw her when she was eight years old on a cruise ship and she had sung this song, and I literally went up to her and told her and her mom, 'I don't know if you plan on doing this, but this is what you need to be doing because you are an amazing singer.' ''

Gloria insists the star's karaoke performance was ''amazing'', especially as she was yet to reach double figures in age.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, she added: ''She was doing karaoke and we were listening because I love to go watch that stuff and it was amazing!''

Musical 'On Your Feet', named after Gloria's 1989 hit 'Get One Your Feet', is set to hit Broadway in the summer of 2015.

The play will tell the story of Gloria and her musician husband Emilio Estefan - who she married in 1978 - and their rise to becoming worldwide sensations.

Several hit songs are set to feature in the musical including 'Rhythm Is Gonna Get You', 'Conga', '1-2-3' and 'Live For Loving You'.

Earlier this month, auditions for the production were held in Miami and New York but the cast is yet to be announced.

For the fourth consecutive week, Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” reigns atop the Billboard Hot 100.For the fourth consecutive week, Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” settles for the runner-up spot.

Do not let that repetition fool you into thinking the top ten is without change.

The variation begins at the #3 position, which welcomes a rebounding “Anaconda.” Up one place this week, the Nicki Minaj tune benefits from double-digit percentage increases in airplay and streaming.

Iggy Azalea’s “Black Widow (featuring Rita Ora)” returns to its #4 peak this week, while Jessie J + Ariana Grande + Nicki Minaj’s “Bang Bang” slips two places to #5. Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me” holds at #6.

One of the week’s biggest changes then comes at the #7 position. There lands Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High),” which rises six places from last week’s position. It is the song’s–and the artist’s–first appearance in the top ten.

Ariana Grande’s “Break Free (featuring Zedd)” follows at #8, while Jeremih’s “Don’t Tell ‘em (featuring YG)” rises one place to #9.

Also up one place this week, Clean Bandit’s crossover smash “Rather Be (featuring Jess Glynne)” reaches a new peak of #10.

It’s Only a Play star Rupert Grint stopped by Access Hollywood to chat making his Broadway debut in the Terrence McNally comedy, where he plays wunderkind director Frank Finger. The Harry Potter fave did have to clarify that unlike former co-star Daniel Radcliffe, he is entirely clothed for his Great White Way debut. While he shares the stage with some huge names, including Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Stockard Channing, there’s one celeb he can’t seem to escape: doppelgänger Ed Sheeran. “I’ve signed albums,” he said of getting stopped on the street and mistaken for the singer-songwriter. Take a look at the interview below, which, as all good interviews do, includes a pic of Helen Mirren in a bikini. Then catch Rupert Grint in It’s Only a Play at the Schoenfeld Theatre!

Thug Kitchen Founders Revealed to Be White (Everyone Act Surprised Now)

$
0
0

Epicurious exposedthe budding brand (with a cookbook in the works) and its founders to be two white millennials, Michelle Davis and Matt Holloway. They are anonymous on the actual blog, Thug Kitchen, but hung out with writer Matt Duckor, and are “unmistakably Thug Kitchen.” But really, are they?

Davis and Holloway told Epicurious they started the blog just to make each other laugh, while getting to the real point of a food recipe — no family-loving bullshit, not egotistical “look at me” shit, just straight food recipes. (With a side of many, many profanities.) But yeah, their revealed identities are causing a lot of fury from people who have every right to be furious.

We’ll hand it over to the very smart blogger, Maya K. Francis, at Very Smart Brothas to land our point:

It goes without saying that “thug” is a loaded word, which in our politically correct, post-racial society, has become the polite way to say “nigger” in mixed company. So the title that Matt Holloway and Michelle Davis chose for their food blog is deliberate. So is the voice. … It’s less important to argue whether or not Holloway and Davis could have gotten this deal if they were Black; rather, it’s important to recognize that they got it because no one knew for sure. Much like the race records of the early 20th century, making the race of content creators less conspicuous is a successful, tried and true marketing strategy — even as the product one is selling is culture.

The site’s humor, of course, is to be found in the stark contrast to perceived “thug” culture and refinement. The crudeness of the language and the life it implies, versus the sumptuous wholesome home goodness of domestic success. This is great, we are supposed to think. Because thugs don’t even know what garbonzo beans ARE! Black people only love collard greens! Those are the assumptions that hold the glue together. That, and the heavy borrowation of the voice that makes Ghostface Killah a joy.

If Thug Kitchen launched with Holloway and Davis’ pictures displayed prominently on the page of their blog, the blog wouldn’t have lasted long. Me, you, and everyone else with some melanin would’ve called it racist. It would’ve been over before it started, and just like we’ve done to Paula Deen, Iggy Izalea and every other imitator, we would have launched a full on attack. So instead, the couple allowed us to feast on the content, and send us home once we had our fill (and they had their page clicks.)

So there you have it. Just as we felt conflicted about Auntie Fee, we feel just as conflicted about Thug Kitchen now.
