My whole brain is crying: Yvette Nicole Brown departs "Community" [yes, it's still on, kind of]

Shirley, Community fans are going to be disappointed with this news. But alas, it's true: Yvette Nicole Brown is departing the fan favorite comedy after five seasons. Brown — who has played Shirley Bennett since the 2009 launch of Community — confirms to TV Guide Magazine that she has asked to be released from her contract for personal reasons. Sony Pictures TV and executive producers Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna have honored her request.

The actress says the change was necessary in order to take care of her ailing father. "My dad needs daily care and he needs me," Brown says. "The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn't do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad."

That means Brown won't be a part of the group that makes the transition from NBC to Yahoo! Screen for Season 6."Yvette was an integral part of Community and is irreplaceable. We are sad to see her go and wish her the very best," Harmon and McKenna said in a joint statement. Brown says Harmon "has been so wonderful about it all. He told me, 'Yvette, I'm praying for your dad.'"The actress also thanked Sony for allowing her to take a recurring role on CBS' midseason reboot of The Odd Couple.

That show is a multi-camera sitcom [UGH], which comes with a more flexible schedule than a single-camera half-hour like Community. "A multi-camera sitcom is a better fit for the life I have now," she says. "I can't say enough how much I respect Sony and Dan for how they handled this profound change in my life."

As for Shirley, it's unclear yet how her departure will be addressed. Brown leaves on solid terms and has left the door open for the possibility of making a guest appearance."I am totally open to whatever Dan decides," she says. "I'm glad it won't be hard for them to explain where she is. She has three kids, a degree and a business. There are a lot of ways to explain her [departure]."

With the exit of Brown and Jonathan Banks (who's committed to AMC's Better Call Saul), the producers are now casting for two new characters. One is described as a woman who's brought in as a consultant to help shape up the school. The other is a retired salesman who comes to Greendale to reinvent himself.

Josh Homme hates One Direction, loves Dave Grohl

The music of globe-smashing boy band One Direction drives Queens Of The Stone Age front-man Josh Homme to distraction.

Josh HommeHe doesn’t encourage his listening to the sounds of the pop-puppets when he drives her to school: “I try to shy away from One Direction because I have to drive the car too – “Do you want it to go over a cliff or do you want it to go to school? You decide, you’re eight.”

The gossip came during an intimate chat with DJ Zane Lowe for the finale of the seven-part Relentless Ultra Soundchain series due to be aired on MTV Music this Sunday 28th September at 9.00pm.

The frank and open chat also sees Homme drop his rock n roll persona to express his love for friend and Foo Fighters founder, Dave Grohl: “I love Dave so much. He’s such a wonderful drummer and we have such a great shorthand. I know everyone’s like “He’s such a great guy” And it’s true. He’s a generous guy.”

Despite being on tour, Josh Homme found time during a mid-tour stop to reveal what blows his mind, why Dean Martin is the glue that holds his family together and what he believes to be the only thing worth having in life.

Liam Gallagher struggling to 'secure funds' for child support

Liam Gallagher is ''struggling to secure funds'' for a support settlement with the mother of his love child.

The Oasis frontman - whose five-year marriage to Nicole Appleton collapsed after it emerged last year he had fathered a baby with the New York based writer Liza Ghorbani - is having trouble finalising his divorce in Britain and, as a result, is finding it increasingly difficult to come up with support deal for his 18-month-old daughter, Gemma, with the journalist.

Liam's lawyer, Raoul Felder, told The New York Post newspaper's Page Six column: ''The divorce in Britain is a complicating factor.''

It is thought the rocker is waiting to divide up his assets with his former wife before coming to an agreement with Liza and her attorney Ira Garr and has failed to respond to three settlement offers that were presented to him over the summer.

Laura Drager, the justice presiding over the on going child support case - has ordered the 42-year-old singer to attend a deposition in New York in November - and explained that while ''everybody's trying to resolve this case'', the 'Wonderwall' singer is having trouble ''securing some funds''.

The news follows revelations Liam was left ''fuming'' earlier this summer after Liza reportedly rejected a child support offer of $5,000 a month to help care for the tot.

Raoul - who claimed Liza kept changing her demands - said at the time: ''She's a very hard lady to satisfy.

''This has been a tortuous route.''

Chanel stages FEMINIST runway show

$

If you hadn't figured it out by now, Karl Lagerfeld really does know his way around a good finale. For SS15, Chanel resurrected no less than the insurrectionary spirit of the May 1968 student protests – albeit with a modern, feminist touch.

The show invitation promised a ticket to Boulevard Chanel, with the Grand Palais transformed into a wide Parisian street like the ones that saw student rioters battling police in '68. But the real meaning behind the reference only became clear when Cara Delevingne led the walk-out with a speakerphone, shouting "Come on!" like a call to battle.

Fellow AW14 campaign star Binx Walton followed with the rest of the models, armed with placards unveiling Chanel's political intentions behind SS15: "Make Fashion Not War", "Ladies First", "Feministe Mais Feminine" ("Feminist But Feminine") and the slightly more arch "Be Your Own Stylist". Roaming photographers leapt from the sidelines and onto the runway to snap Karl's freedom fighters.

Even second-wave feminism got a look-in: one model waved a placard reading "History is Herstory". And Karl didn't forget feminism is also for the guys, too: a lone male model in military khakis carried a "He For She" protest sign, perhaps in a nod to Emma Watson's HeForShe UN campaign for gender equality, while Karl himself strode at the very front of the march.

Last season's AW13 supermarket sweep show raised the roof on expectations for Lagerfeld's follow-up, but nobody expected him to position Chanel as the latest word in protest chic. But then again, it does make sense – who doesn't love a good old-fashioned fashion riot?

Stay tuned to our Fashion Week page for our show report plus backstage images.

New MALUCA song - Trigger

“Maluca Mala” means "crazy bad" in Spanish, and the artist has described what she makes as, “ghetto-techno, Latin-dance, hip-hop, rave music.” A couple years ago she opened for Robyn—whose forthcoming LP she’s actually set to be on—on tour, and released the popular, acid-inflected “El Tigeraso” single on Diplo’s Mad Decent label. Fast forward to present day, and she’s got that Robyn collaboration, an appearance on Brodinski's new LP and a new single on NYC label RPM MSC, which we're presenting here. The tune is called “Trigger,” out today, and it brings together serotonin-heavy EDM production and a reggaeton-esque beat that (really nicely) feels like it wants to go two different speeds at once. Stream it below and be on the lookout for the EP she's working on now in early 2015.

Finally released! The world needs more Maluca music, forreal.

It's official: Gags has been using Cher's old wigs

cher-lady-gaga-dark-wig

Where are you right now with your clothing? It seems like you’ve been channeling Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard and Cher with your hair. Did you have a particular muse in mind?

I’m always inspired by the greats. I look back at Ginger Rogers, and even though I might not be dressing like her, she’s been a big inspiration for me—as well as Ella Fitzgerald. Ella didn’t care how she looked. She wasn’t worried about anyone thinking she’s beautiful. She was worried about giving the most honest, authentic performance that she could.

When I was choosing what kind of hair I wanted to wear while singing this album, I remembered how I wore my hair when I was 13 when I sang standards for the first time. I’m an Italian girl, so when I get out of the shower, my hair curls up and I get out my diffuser and put spray in it. Because I’m returning to my roots with jazz, I thought I’d also return to my hair roots.

I feel very supportive and blessed that Cher has been so supportive of me borrowing her wigs. That shows the mark of a real artist.

Were you nervous about alienating some of your younger fans with this release?

No, I wasn’t. Little Monsters are very open-minded. They have a thirst for new things (yeah like new butt plugs not jazz albums). I started singing jazz when I was 13 and I discovered it before then. My mom used to play Billie Holiday on Sundays, I found Ella Fitzgerald—who’s my absolute favorite jazz singer—and my father listened to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. So part of me knew in my heart that many of my fans would fall in love with jazz the same way I did, because we’re very similar.

I’m also not afraid of anything. At the end of the day, it’s much more important to me to put out this great music into the world. Because I am a jazz vocalist (citation needed), it’s a completely humbling experience to be doing this with Tony. All I want is to spread the message of this music as far and wide as I can with these great composers: Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn—I could go on and on (Gags is googling jazz singers rn).

Where do you think pop music is headed right now?

It’s really hard to say where it will go, but I will say that I’m loving watching people gravitate toward the likes of Sam Smith and people who have these rich, beautiful organic voices. I’m excited that this album is coming out now because I think people are ready for an organic type of music (she would love Britney Jean imo). I feel that culture is excited to hear something more natural.

AMC, Regal Theaters boycott Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2

After Weinstein Co. and Netflix sign deal to release CTHD 2 simultaneously on Netflix and select Imax theaters (posted here), AMC, Cinemark, Carmike and Regal boycott CTHD 2 screenings.

"AMC Theatres and Wanda Cinema are the largest operators of Imax-equipped auditoriums in the world. We license just the technology from Imax. Only AMC and Wanda decide what programming plays in our respective theaters. No one has approached us to license this made-for-video sequel in the U.S. or China, so one must assume the screens Imax committed are in science centers and aquariums," AMC said in a terse statement.

AMC's boycott is especially problematic because it operates 146 locations in the U.S., the most of any circuit. Regal follows with 86.

Marvel's Chrises Inspired Ben's Bulked-Up Batman Body

Ben Affleck appeared on Live! with Kelly and Michael earlier this week and was asked some questions about how he buffed up to become Batman for the upcoming 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.' Affleck has taken a break from filming the new Batman/Superman movie to promote his upcoming film 'Gone Girl'. The actor, who will soon play the famous DC Comics character, cited inspiration from a surprising source — two actors who star in the Avengers movies by rival comic book company Marvel. "I've been getting bigger. I've been working out a lot," he told Kelly and Michael. "These are not roles that you can do and not exercise for. Audiences now have increasing expectations. Affleck added: "Like, in the 1950s, you could just be like Burt Lancaster and tall. But now you see guys like Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans and all these guys whose bodies are just, you think, 'How is that even possible?'"

In separate interviews, Affleck was also asked about his Batman voice and the caped crusader's new costume. Variety asked him about how the new costume compared to other iterations. "Well, I don’t know how the others have been. Anytime you have a costume that is restricting, the challenge is that it’s got to look good but not look restricting." Affleck also almost let his new Batman voice slip in a recent interview with MTV, but later said audiences would have to wait to hear it when the movie opens in March 2016. "Ah, you've gotta pay. That's IMAX money to see that!"

James Franco is shy; finds dating difficult

James Franco finds it difficult to get a date as he's "shy".

The actor-director-producer-author-screenwriter - who has been single since splitting from Ahna O'Reilly after five years of dating in 2011 - insists he is "shy" around the opposite sex but is slowly improving his social skills, though he doesn't have much time to meet people.

Speaking in the new issue of Loaded magazine - out now - He said: "I've always been a little shy in meeting women.

"I've been getting better over the years at being able to speak more comfortably when I first meet someone. Obviously you have to be a little apprehensive on some occasions but usually it's all very natural."

Franco was recently forced to defend himself after flirting with a 17-year-old fan on Instagram, insisting he was just trying to "meet someone", and though it has been speculated the incident was a publicity stunt to promote his 'Palo Alto' movie, he insists he doesn't "care" what people think.

"I don't care. I've tried to address the issue of celebrity culture in different ways and by doing that I open myself up to that kind of criticism," he says.

BREAKING: JESSICA RELEASES FIRST OFFICIAL STATEMENT AFTER BEING EXPELLED FROM GIRLS’ GENERATION

In the latest breaking news, Jessica has finally broken her silence after posting on Weibo and released an update to the media in the form of a letter.

Jessica’s letter comes just moments after Tyler Kwon updated his Weibo account, sending an encouraging message to Jessica as well as repeating that he has no plans to get married in the near future.

He then sent a message to Jessica on Weibo stating, "Hey, hang in there~! The truth about what really happened will be known - we all got your back!"

Jessica’s message reads as below:

Hello, this is Jessica.

I was given a notice of departure from Girls’ Generation by my agency on September 29th, and I cannot hide my shocked and upset heart about this, so I’m here to reveal my feelings.

I have always put the activities of Girls’ Generation’s before my business and personal life as a member of Girls’ Generation. However, despite my efforts for the team, the agency asked me to leave [the team].

As I was planning on creating the business I have shown a lot of interested in before, I sufficiently consulted SM as well as the members regarding my preparations many times, asking for their understanding.

Up until the beginning of August when I was launching “BLANC,” I made agreements and received permission from SM, and even congratulations from the members.

However, in early September, only a month following the launching, the members suddenly changed positions and held a meeting, telling me to either quit my business or leave Girls’ Generation without any justifiable reason.

I explained that I had already received permission from the agency, that I had never neglected Girls’ Generation’s activities, and I could not suddenly stop my business due to my contract with my business partner after only a month.

Ultimately, I pleaded that it was unfair to make me choose [between the group and her business]. Becoming a Girls’ Generation member was the best thing in my life, and I’ve never thought about quitting.

Shocked, I met with the agency’s CEO on September 16th about my position, and again, confirmed their permission for me to continue my business.

However, on September 29th, I was given a one-sided notice asking me to leave Girls’ Generation. Because of this, I was unable to attend the fan meeting in China on September 30th, and I have been excluded from following Girls’ Generation scheduled activities.

I have received great pain and cannot hide my sadness when I was asked by the agency and my fellow members, whom I’ve spent 15 years with, putting in all my passion and efforts, to leave Girls’ Generation just because I am starting my own business.

I also want to apologize for causing concern to all the fans. Understand that this is not the situation I imagined. I have always treasured Girls’ Generation and will continue to do so. Thank you for always supporting and love me.supporting and loving me.

Sincerely,
Jessica

New 'Twilight' Short Films Are Coming to Facebook

Fans of the Twilight series will soon have new films to watch — but they won't be coming to theaters.

Lionsgate and author Stephenie Meyer are partnering with Facebook to create a new series of short films based in the popular YA universe, that will be distributed exclusively on the social network next year. As part of the initiative, called “The Storytellers — New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga," a "multiphase contest" will be held, resulting in the selection of at least five female filmmakers to helm the new shorts.

Participating in the selection and mentorship of the filmmakers will be a group of panelists including Meyer, Kristen Stewart, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Frozen writer Jennifer Lee, director Catherine Hardwicke, Modern Family's Julie Bowen and the president of Women In Film, Cathy Schulman.

Fans will then help judge the best short, with the ultimate winner receiving an unspecified cash price and opportunities to advance their career. Fans will be included in both the development and the production of the individual films, via both Facebook and the crowdsourcing platform Tongal.

“More people than ever before are creating, discovering and engaging with videos on Facebook,” Facebook vice president of partnerships Dan Rose said in a statement. “This collaboration with Stephenie Meyer, Lionsgate and Women In Film is a great opportunity to engage Twilight’s massive global audience on Facebook through an innovative premium video program.”

The move provides a potential glimpse into Facebook's video strategy moving forward. Back in 2011, Warner Bros. announced that it would begin renting movies on Facebook as part of a trial. That initiative eventually fizzled, but Facebook has continued forward with a more focused strategy in the years since. It began testing auto-playing video ads last year in connection with Divergent — another popular YA franchise — and projects like the Twilight initiative could both play to Facebook's strengths as a social media platform, as well as allow it to be the exclusive home to to video content not available on other platforms.

Even more importantly, the Twilight contest will allow Meyer to reach the passionate fans of her franchise and enabling their own creative participation at the same time. "The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I've worked in the film industry,” said Meyer. “I’m honored to be working with Women In Film, Lionsgate, and Facebook on a project dedicated to giving more women a chance to be heard creatively.”

Entire First Season of Steven Soderbergh's 'The Knick' to Screen at Rome Film Festival
By ARISTON ANDERSON
Clive Owen will present the show in Italy
The whole first season of Steven Soderbergh's acclaimed period drama The Knick will screen at the Rome Film Festival on Oct. 17 and 18. The Oscar-winning director returned from his “retirement” to direct the vehicle for Cinemax. The show has become the centerpiece for the network’s rebranding strategy, to focus on high-quality original series.

Clive Owen will meet with audiences in Rome to present the 10-episode series, which has already been picked up for a second season.
[...]
Rome Film Festival artistic director Marco Mueller commends TV as a medium for filmmakers to explore longer narratives. “And while films at the movies continue to be novellas, or serially-produced comic books, quality television is now capable of both fostering and producing a sort of film narrative that breaks conventional formats, and can sometimes be as long and eloquent as a novel,” he says. “There can no longer be any doubt therefore that the great contemporary film-novel is now brought to us on television. And that the most important contemporary film-novel of the year is called The Knick.”
