Lucy, letting the murder mystery she's reading get to her head, begins to suspect Ricky is trying to kill her

Lucy becomes so engrossed in the murder mystery she's reading that imagination starts getting away from her. Convinced Ricky is plotting her murder, she arms herself with metal kitchenware in the hopes it will protect her from a bullet.

Rory's Bus Books

Many a bookworm can attest to having a location designated for the books they're currently reading. In the past, I've had a Living Room Book, a Night Stand Book, and a Lunch Book. Rory Gilmore takes it a step further by having MULTIPLE Bus Books because she doesn't know what she'll be in the mood to read.

Joey puts The Shining (and Little Women) in the freezer

Remember when Joey Tribbiani wasn't a complete cartoon of a character? He was a little doofy but still well-rounded enough to be a reader of horror and even willing to give a children's classic a shot. He even grew attached enough to the March sisters to want to put the book in the freezer when Beth got really, really sick.

Dustin needs his paddles

(I apologize for the quality of the video; this was all I could find.)

Dustin needs to check out some books from the Hawkins pubic library but unfortunately, he's already maxed out on the 5 book limit (a ridiculousy low limit, I might add). Dustin claims he's on a "curiosity voyage" and the books are his paddles. The librarian is not buying his bs so he just straight up steals the books, screaming "I need my paddles!" on the way out.

Lucy misses a book Ricky tosses her and receives a black eye.

In the Black Eye, Lucy picks up a book Ricky was previously reading and gets so immersed that she's not wiling to give it back. They compromise and decide to read it together until it's time for the Mertzes to come over. Ricky tosses Lucy the book to put away and hits her square in the eye. This episode, which aired in 1953, can be very cringe worthy for a 2018 audience for its flippant treatment of domestic violence. But it is fairly charming seeing a husband and wife read an engrossing book to each other.

Even though we know the main plot and saw the trailer for Us, we still know little about it. Peele created the monsters/doppelgangers, The Tethered, and it's probably going to remain ripe for theories until its release.

Jordan had Lupita watch 10 movies, from The SHining to Martyrs, to create a "shared language" with the actress.

Some of the others were...

The Shining
It Follows
Martyrs
Funny Games
A Tale of Two Sisters

The movie, set in present day, stars Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong'o, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex. Us hits theaters March 15, 2019 and the trailer debuted on Christmas day

Peter Hook, bassist for the post-punk band Joy Division synth-pop group New Order will be auctioning off some of his former band's memorabilia. Hook left New Order in 2007 after decades of a contentious relationship with members Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris. Last year, an out of court settlement was reach on who actually gets to keep the band name. Hook has decided to sell the items because of the lawsuit.

Some items you can get from Peter's auction:
- a Sex Pistols ticket stub where he and Sumner decided to form Joy Division
- a signed Joy Division record
- a replica of Ian Curtis' guitar from the "Love Will Tear Us Apart" video

The online catalog will be published January 21st but you can order hard copies to see all of Hook's Hoard. Hook gives an in depth interview as to why he's auctioning items and what it means about his musical legacy (at the source)

Youtube called out for posting uncredited video on Twitter

On Christmas, Youtube posted a cool dominos video on its official Twitter account.

However, a few people recognized the video as being the work of Lily Hevesh (Hevesh5), a Youtuber who specializes on intricate dominos designs. Not only did Youtube not credit her in the tweet, they actually cropped out her intro and outro.

Hevesh became aware of the tweet, and started posting about it.

Eventually, Hank Green caught wind of what happened and tweeted about it.

Then Youtube FINALLY tweeted an apology (although obviously the original tweet was never removed).

tl;dr: Youtube is trash, water is wet, the pope poops in the woods.

ONTD Reading Challenge January: Read a Book That is Being Adapted into a Movie or TV Show in 2019!

$

The January task for the ONTD READING CHALLENGE is to read a book that is being adapted into a movie or tv show in 2019. To help you pick your book of the month, hjalmartazar and yours truly have selected some of the coolest-sounding upcoming adaptations.

The books listed here are not the only ones being adapted in 2019, so if none of these catches your eye, you can always read something else! Check out the sources for more titles, but always check to see if the adaptation is really scheduled for 2019 (Death on the Nile, for example, has already been pushed back to 2020, and films like The Rosie Project that are vaguely "in development" with no premiere date in sight, stills or trailer, are probably stuck in development hell).

The Goldfinch (Donna Tartt) - October

Adaptation cast: Nicole Kidman, Ansel Potato, Sarah Paulson, Finn Wolfhard

Book summary: Theo Decker, a thirteen-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art. As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love-and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.

The Woman in the Window (AJ Finn) - October 4

Adaptation cast: Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, Julianne Moore

Book summary: Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times... and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Pet Sematary (Stephen King) - April 5

Adaptation cast: John Lithgow

Book summary: When the Creeds move into a beautiful old house in rural Maine, it all seems too good to be true: physician father, beautiful wife, charming little daughter, adorable infant son -- and now an idyllic home. As a family, they've got it all...right down to the friendly cat. But the nearby woods hide a blood-chilling truth -- more terrifying than death itself...and hideously more powerful.

Lovecraft Country (Matt Ruff) - HBO series

Adaptation cast: Aunjanue Ellis, Jonathan Majors, Michael Kenneth Williams

Book summary: Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, twenty-two year old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned Atticus’s great grandmother—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours. At the manor, Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal named the Order of the Ancient Dawn—led by Samuel Braithwhite and his son Caleb—which has gathered to orchestrate a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of his—and the whole Turner clan’s—destruction.

Nos4a2 (Joe Hill) - AMC series

Adaptation cast: Ashleigh Cummings, Zachary Quinto

Book summary: Victoria McQueen has a secret gift for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. On her Raleigh Tuff Burner bike, she makes her way to a rickety covered bridge that, within moments, takes her wherever she needs to go, whether it’s across Massachusetts or across the country. Charles Talent Manx has a way with children. He likes to take them for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the NOS4A2 vanity plate. With his old car, he can slip right out of the everyday world, and onto the hidden roads that transport them to an astonishing – and terrifying – playground of amusements he calls “Christmasland.” Then, one day, Vic goes looking for trouble—and finds Manx. That was a lifetime ago. Now Vic, the only kid to ever escape Manx’s unmitigated evil, is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx never stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. He’s on the road again and he’s picked up a new passenger: Vic’s own son.

Artemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer) - August 9

Adaptation cast: Judi Dench, Ferdia Shaw, Josh Gad, Miranda Raison, Hong Chau

Book summary: Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genius—and, above all, a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories—they're dangerous!

Little Women (Louisa May Alcott) - December 25

Adaptation cast: Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Laura Dern

Book summary: Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth--four "little women" enduring hardships and enjoying adventures in Civil War New England.

All the Bright Places (Jennifer Niven)

Adaptation cast: Elle Fanning, Justice Smith, Luke Wilson, Keegan-Michael Key

Book summary: Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him. Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death. When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.

Catch-22 (Joseph Heller) - Hulu series

Adaptation cast: George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Kyle Chandler

Book summary: Set in the closing months of World War II, this is the story of a bombardier named Yossarian who is frantic and furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. His real problem is not the enemy - it is his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. If Yossarian makes any attempts to excuse himself from the perilous missions then he is caught in Catch-22: if he flies he is crazy, and doesn't have to; but if he doesn't want to he must be sane and has to. That's some catch...

Sister Wendy Beckett, TV art historian, dies at 88

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sister Wendy Beckett, a Roman Catholic nun who interrupted a cloistered life of prayer in England in 1991 and soared to international stardom with lyrical BBC documentaries that made her one of the most improbable art critics in television history, died on Wednesday in the village of East Harling, England.

Known for her disarming demeanor and endearing appearance, including buck teeth and a slight speech impediment that rendered R's as W's, Beckett provided insightful ameteur analyses of artwork ranging from Renaissance oil paintings to Warhol's Pop Art and, most controversially, Andres Serrano's Piss Christ (she believed that the work was not blasphemous).

Beckett shunned fame and rebuffed claims of celebrity; she frequently expressed hope that BBC executives would grow tired of her (she considered herself, in many interviews, to be a 'flavour of the month') and hire a new host so that she could return to her unheated caravan in which she lived, in devoted silence, on the grounds of a Carmelite monastery in Northern England. Beckett, 88, is survived by one brother.

Kevin Spacey's accuser: I have the receipts

On Christmas Eve, Nantucket District Court filed felony charges against Kevin Spacey for indecent assault and battery after sexually assaulting an 18-year old in 2016.

According to court documents, the 18-year old send a video of his assault to his then-girlfriend, along with texts stating that Spacey was hitting on him. Both the girlfriend and the kid's sister corroborated his story. Workers at the restaurant/bar where the incident took place also say they saw the two of them together (but not the assault).

Spacey's lawyers argued the video was insufficient evidence, claiming it doesn't show anyone being groped. Spacey is scheduled for arraignment on January 7.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill says he's bothered by comparisons between Darth Vader and Donald Trump.

"Listen, I really get upset then when people compare [Trump] or even Dick Cheney to Darth Vader because Darth Vader repented,” Hamill said on a podcast hosted by The Washington Post. “He saw the error of his ways. I don’t see either one of them doing that."
