Early estimates for 'First Man's box office are looking at a $30M opening weekend on October 12

Based on what I'm assuming is box office trends/research and audience interest, the trades are already predicting that Damien Chazelle's 'First Man' is expected to bring in around $30M during its opening weekend on October 12th (with an estimated $70M budget).

Going against 'First Man' that weekend are 'Goosebumps 2', which pundits think will only bring in $15M its opening weekend, and 'Bad Times at the El Royale', estimated to bring in between $10M-$18M. I dunno, the estimates for both 'First Man' and Goosebumps' seem low as fuck but we'll see.

Why every social media site is a dumpster fire

$
0
0

Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram are built to cater to the base preferences and desires of their users -- figuring out what information people enjoy with and then showing them more of it. That’s a great way to keep people online, but it also makes these platforms prime target for con artists. People are naturally drawn to inflammatory and sensational news stories, regardless of whether or not they're true. So bad actors -- conspiracy theorists, trolls, and fake news writers -- have been tremendously successful in using these platforms to spread false and divisive content that exploit people’s tribal instincts.

In 2016, it was Macedonian teens making thousands of dollars publishing inflammatory fake stories about Hillary Clinton. After the Parkland shooting, it was random YouTubers going viral by accusing students of being crisis actors. Even the Russian trolls who meddled in the presidential election did so by posting low-quality, highly emotional content to social media -- content they knew would go viral.

The problem with these social media sites isn’t that a few bad apples are ruining the fun. It’s that they’re designed to reward bad apples. And as long as con artists can use these platforms to prey on people’s most base desires, social media sites will continue reflecting the worst of human nature back at us.

MGM has revealed the first look (above) at Chucky from the Child's Play reboot.
Aubrey Plaza will play Karen, a mother who gives her son, Andy (Gabriel Bateman), a toy for his birthday, unaware that it harbors a dangerously sinister secret.
Brian Tyree Henry will play Greg, a detective investigating the mysterious happenings surrounding the doll’s nefarious spree.
The reboot deviates from the original as it is believed to follow a group of kids and a technologically-advanced doll that enters their world, compared to the original 1988 movie which followed a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray who casts a spell that traps his soul inside the body of a Good Guy doll named Chucky, which is then given to a young boy.

Are you shopping for a sexy Handmaid's Tale costume?

Retailer Yandy provides a variety of costume choices for the discerning customer. However, their Handmaid's-Tale-themed option wasn't received well.

The socially-minded company pulled their striking "Brave Red Maiden Costume" and released the following statement in response to public outcry:"Yandy always has stood, and will continue to stand, at the forefront of encouraging our customers to “Own Your Sexy.” We support our customers being comfortable in their skin, regardless of who they are or what they choose to wear. Our corporate ideology is rooted in female empowerment, and gender empowerment overall,” Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that our “Yandy Brave Red Maiden Costume” is being seen as a symbol of women’s oppression, rather than an expression of women’s empowerment. This is unfortunate, as it was not our intention on any level. Our initial inspiration to create the piece was through witnessing its use in recent months as a powerful protest image.Given the sincere, heartfelt response, supported by numerous personal stories we’ve received, we are removing the costume from our site."

You may be disappointed that the Brave Red Maiden is no longer available, but don't worry: Yandy still has over 40 types of sexy Indian costumes available that may strike your fancy.

“Lethal White,” the fourth series in Rowling’s Cormoran Strike mystery series, written under the pen name Robert Galbraith, features a pair of hard-left political activists who believe “Zionists” are evil and have a stranglehold on Western governments.

Extortionist Jimmy Knight’s extreme hatred of Israel has led him to hate Jews.

“I wouldn’t trust him if it was anything to do with Jews,” Knight’s ex-wife tells a detective. “He doesn’t like them. Israel’s the root of all evil, according to Jimmy. Zionism: I got sick of the bloody sound of the word. You’d think they’d suffered enough,” she says of Jews.
