Summary before the cut—— Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen describe their relationship as 'a marriage'. The twins' fashion line The Row is getting a menswear collection. Ashley describes their journey through menswear being something that "has shifted our eye" in the way they view their tailoring for their women's collection.
A menswear line is not sudden—— Over the years, MKA have expressed interest in adding a menswear collection to their fashion line. Their flirting with this idea goes back to at least 12 years ago, when they answered a fan's question regarding a men's line during a 2006 Much Music on Demand interview. "Yes. I would love to do that," Ashley quickly responded while Mary-Kate nodded by her side.
Photos of pieces from their menswear collection can be viewed at the source (one).
The interviewer mentions the latest trends in menswear; most notably, street wear.
Ashley: "I don’t think people are taking big risks in menswear."
Mary-Kate: "It’s funny, because this is more of a risk than putting words on a T-shirt. Who knew that black, gorgeous, perfectly fitted suits would be a risk?"
Ashley: "I think a men’s rise has gotten short and small. There’s something about a slightly higher rise that is quite sexy."
Mary-Kate: "We’re talking millimeters."
Mary-Kate and Ashley are still sensitive to references of their childhood stardom—— Ashley says that they're "not product pushers".
Ashely: I don’t know if it’s because of the way we grew up—we just don’t like talking about ourselves or talking about what we’re doing.... It’s not really our approach."
Mary-Kate: "I think the clothes speak for themselves, and so to put a face or a name with the product doesn’t ever feel right."
Unlike most brands, The Row doesn't make its revenues primarily on its leather goods and accessories. The Row evidently banks on their clothes. The source delves more into the financial side of the brand.
"It’s been 32 years of learning how to communicate,” says Ashley, adding that their relationship is "a marriage and a partnership. We have had ups and downs."
Ashley: "We do everything together."
Mary-Kate: "We came out of the womb doing that."
MKA don't "do" social media or online interactions, but they are hoping to start launching digital sales by 2019. Also in consideration is a launch of skin-care products and small leather wallets for women.
