Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton at Cannes

The British actor turns blood-sucking immortal lover alongside Tilda Swinton in the Cannes festival film 'Only Lovers Left Alive.''

CANNES, France — Tom Hiddleston's Loki (from Avengers and Thor) might be the baddest dude at this year's MTV Movie Awards, taking top villain honors.

But he's stepping up his game. Hiddleston is flashing some serious teeth onscreen at the Cannes Film Festival.

The British actor plays Adam, to Tilda Swinton's Eve, vampire lovers who are trying to make it work after centuries together in Only Lovers Left Alive. For Hiddleston the role was a welcome step away from the norm.

"I had been playing a lot of soldiers and superheroes," Hiddelston said at a press conference Saturday before the film's gala premiere. "It was such an exciting extension of curiosity into an avenue I have never really explored."

Vampire love stories have been explored before onscreen, more recently in the Twilight series with Edward Cullen (Robert Pattison) turning his human lover Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) into a fellow immortal.

But the name Twilight was not even mentioned alongside this last-minute addition to the Cannes competition, which was quickly snapped up by Sony Classic for U.S. release. Writer-director Jim Jarmusch insisted he has "never seen any of these current commercial vampire films."

The vampires depicted here are highly sophisticated creatures who love the arts and science (and would no doubt never be caught dead in a Twilight film). They refer to humans as "zombies" because of the foolish mistakes they make.

"Perhaps if you saw them walking on the other side of the street, they would stand out," said Hiddleston. "But they would stand out as wild and feral in a beautiful way."

The vampires do have to cover their mouths when they speak. "Because they have some pretty intense teeth," Hiddleston added.

The filmmakers were able to create their own set of vampire lore as well, including the premise that vampires cover their hands at all times in public with gloves. When invited into another vampire's home, these gloves are removed by the host as a custom.

Jarmusch mentioned that these bits of lore change in every vampire movie, from garlic-aversion to the inability to see themselves in mirrors (Note: he didn't mention sparkling skin).

"We wanted to have one that was our own," he said of the vampire lore. "So we had the gloves."

But mostly they wanted to create an unusual love story with a couple who have really seen some relational mileage.

"We knew we needed to a show a long love that was so evolved what they actually say to each other is just the tip of an iceberg for a conversation which has been going for 500 years," said Swinton.

"It's a very beautiful story between two people who love each other and accept each other. And they happen to be vampires," said Hiddleston. "It's the idea of a story of love in the context of immortality. Is it a blessing or a curse, and what does it do to your commitment?"

Champions League final, Wembley - Borussia Dortmund 1 (Gundogan 68 pen) Bayern Munich 2 (Mandzukic 60, Robben 89)
Uploaded with Imgupr

Bayern Munich overcame the heartbreak of losing two finals in three seasons by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in a memorable all-German Champions League final to become European champions for the fifth time.
Goals from Croatian Mario Mandzukic after 60 minutes and Dutchman Arjen Robben, with an 89th-minute strike, settled a superb final after Dortmund levelled with a 68th-minute penalty from Ilkay Gundogan.
The victory kept alive Bayern's hopes of a treble as they have already won the German league title and face Stuttgart in the Cup final in Berlin next Saturday.
The match, played at a ferocious pace, was full of superb attacking football and seemed destined for extra time until Robben burst through a gap in the defence and rounded outstanding Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller to score.
Dortmund began at blistering pace which they maintained for almost 30 minutes with Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski pulverising the Bayern defence.
Lewandowski had the first of their seven first-half scoring chances, powering in a 30-yard shot which goalkeeper Manuel Neuer turned over the bar for a corner.
Neuer also made a superb stop when he stuck out his left leg to prevent Jakub Blaszczykowski scoring from close range after he was set up by Lewandowski.
Bayern were virtually over-run at the start but battled back to create five good scoring chances of their own - three falling to Robben who could well have netted a hat-trick by half-time.
A poor touch scuppered the first when he had only Weidenfeller to beat, and the goalkeeper stopped him again by taking a shot straight in the face when Robben had the goal gaping just before the break.
Weidenfeller also stopped a powerful goalbound header from Mandzukic after 26 minutes, tipping his powerful effort on to the bar and over.
Both teams maintained the high tempo until the half-time break and the only surprise was that neither made the breakthrough after 45 breathtaking minutes of superb football.
The game continued to be end-to-end for most of the second half, but Bayern gradually took control as Dortmund faded.
The nature of the first two goals also reflected the see-saw game with Dortmund equalising just eight minutes after Bayern scored.
Robben was at the heart of that opening goal, providing the final cross for Mandzukic to sweep home with his left foot from close range but the lead only lasted eight minutes before Dante's rash challenge on Reus gave Dortmund the penalty from which Gundogan scored.
In the end, the balance swung Bayern's way with Robben's stunning solo goal making Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes only the fourth man to win the European Cup with two clubs after leading Real Madrid to victory in 1998.

Yahoo Reportedly Puts Bid in For Hulu

Tumblr. Flickr. Now Hulu? If a new rumor is to be believed, Yahoo has placed a bid on the TV/movie platform. The rumor originates from a source speaking to AllThingD, and claims that Yahoo officially submitted the bid to Hulu earlier this morning.

Currently how much Yahoo is offering and other specifics are unknown. Beyond Yahoo, there are also other interested parties in Hulu such as DirecTV, KKR, the Chemin Group, Guggenheim Digital, Willaim Morris Endeavor, Time Warner Cable and Silverlake.

The source further asserts that all interested companies were told by Hulu to have their bids in by this coming Wednesday. In other words, Hulu seems pretty intent on selling – or at least that’s the word on the web.

Hulu has quickly become a go-to alternative for many folks looking to cut the cord on cable, or a supplement for those looking to augment their existing programming. Under new hands, it is hard to say what will happen to Hulu and how its service model might change.

IF Hulu really is planning to sell soon, who do you hope gets the winning bid? Would you be concerned if Yahoo did add Hulu to their growing arsenal of services?

Palme d'Awful: The worst films for sale at Cannes

$

Every year, 20 of the world's best new movies compete at the film festival. But there is also the marché, where other cinematic hopefuls are bought and sold.

Copposites

From the director of I Now Pronounce You Black And White – apparently one of South Africa’s highest-grossing “local” comedies – comes another farce of dubious racial profiling and belated cinematic bandwagon-jumping. A washed-up white cop and a black crook trying to go straight are accidentally body-swapped in a lab. Redemptive hilarity follows.

Sharknado

“Enough said!” runs the tagline, the producers presumably having exhausted themselves with that title. To be fair, Sharknado really is that simple: the citizens of LA, among them Tara Reid, are blighted by a tornado of sharks. It’s the latest classic from Asylum, an outfit specialising in cut-price creature features. Also out this year: Shark Week, in which a wealthy madman terrorises a group of strangers. With sharks. Enough said.

Santa Claws

In 1996, a horror movie called Santa Claws was made. Now it’s time for the kiddie version, in which Santa’s policy against delivering cats as presents – on account of his allergies, rather than any concern for animal welfare – is tested by “little Tommy”, who gets the rules bent because he’s been so good. “But instead of one little kitten, the whole litter climbs into the sack. When Santa has a major allergic reaction, the kitties have to take over and deliver the presents.” Nothing says family fun more than a major allergic reaction.

FDR American Badass

Equipped by Einstein and the CIA with a bespoke Wheelchair Of Death, America’s wartime president battles polio-carrying Nazi werewolves in this imaginative new biopic. But there’s time for romance, too: an image on the back of the flyer shows a blonde lady joking around with a couple of melons. Also on the flyer, an early review from Paperblog.com: “Boom! This version of FDR blows that shitty Hyde Park On Hudson movie out of the fucking water.” Clearly, Roger Ebert’s legacy lives on.

Voyage

Mind that rusty nail! The fifth film from Hong Kong director Scud is apparently not some dubious nude slasher affair, but the story of a depressed young psychiatrist who voyages around south-east Asia, visiting former clients to gain some kind of closure. Why he must do so butt-naked, clutching a hunting knife, is unclear. Scud himself describes the opening mass harakiri scene as “very funny”.

The Blue Apple Tree

The genre here is unclear: heartwarming family soap? Abuse drama? Radiation exposé? And what's with all the hats in the strip of pics at the bottom?

Lindsay Lohan Tweets From Rehab

Lindsay Lohan has broken her silence with a tweet from rehab.

Instead of complaining about being stuck in rehab for 90 days or fuming over her lack of Adderall, the troubled actress posted something a bit more positive.

The tweet in question also included a link to an app called Just Sing It!. According to the official description, the app is like “Instagram for your voice.”

Much to everyone’s surprise, Lindsay Lohan’s return to Twitter included the lyrics to the Wizard of Oz song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The posted also offered up a few words which suggest the actress’ time in rehab might be doing her some good.

“It’s up to us to make the best of what we have,” the Mean Girls star wrote.

Things have apparently settled down a bit for Lohan now that her treatment at the Betty Ford Center is underway. Earlier this month, reports surfaced that the actress was experiencing a bit of a meltdown after doctors determined she didn’t need her prescription for Adderall.

According to various reports, the decision to take the pills away didn’t settle well with Lohan. Sources explained that the troubled star was strongly considering parting ways with the rehab facility. It’s believed she’s worried that the lack of Adderall will make her gain weight.

“Lindsay has been able to eat whatever she has wanted and not gain weight for years and she attributes this to Adderall … everyone knows that the controversial drug ramps up your metabolism, and can suppress the appetite,” sources said about the actress’ reaction.

The Liz & Dick star’s recent tweet can be found below.

Benson Is Back! Mariska Hargitay Confirmed For Season 15

‘Law & Order: SVU’ fans can breathe a sigh of relief, NBC has confirmed that the seasoned veteran Mariska Hargitay will return for another season. Here are the latest details.

Up until today it was still unclear if NBC would be able to negotiate a deal to have Mariska Hargitay’s famous SVU character return for another season (this upcoming season will be the 15th). It was Mariska herself that helped break the news of her appending return stating on Twitter, “Happy weekend. It’s official. Season 15–I’LL BE BACK!” This comes just a few days after the final episode of season 14, the episode ended with the possibility of Hargitay to return left open, though she was being held at gunpoint.

Ever since the departure of Christopher Meloni the show has seen countless rumors that it may be canceled, but fans still tune in for every episode to catch up on Hargitay and her team. The show has seen some ratings fall-short of its earlier progress, but being in its 15th season and holding a 2.1 rating with adults 18-49 on a Wednesday is nothing to scoff at. The show is expected to return to the same date and time on NBC this fall.

XBOX ONE: All The Research In One Post

$

Alright, if you're a consumer and you're considering picking up the new Xbox One console, then please, take a moment to listen to me. Before we begin, no, I am not a fan boy or a hater. I have no console Bias. I have a PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and a Gaming PC. Each has their pros and cons but now onto business.

DO NOT BUY AN XBOX ONE (or I wouldn't suggest that you do currently.) Why? See the reasons below:

Xbox Requires an internet connection. Here's how it works: Every 24 hours your Xbox will try to connect to Microsoft's servers for verification. If it is unable to connect, sucks to be you. You're blocked from playing even single player games until it can connect.

Update: Microsoft is claiming that what Phil Harrison described in the above source was only a possible scenario. I really do hope that's the case. Though, Microsoft needs to make up their minds. They say one thing and then days later say another. The source below has been updated to reflect this new information.
Source

Do you like renting games, lending them to a friend, or even borrowing them from a friend? No longer possible. Every Xbox One game you get must be registered to your Xbox live account to be played. After that point it will only work for you. No one else can use it unless they pay a fee. Essentially it works like this. You pick up a used Xbox One game from somewhere or someone, pop it into your console. The system verifies it's been registered to your account. Uh-oh, it isn't! In order to play it, you have to pay Microsoft a fee, which is currently slated to be full retail price. Doesn't matter how scratched up it is or how cheap you got it at Gamestop or from a friend. You aren't just buying the physical copies anymore. You're paying Microsoft for a LICENSE (for lack of a better word or phrasing) to be allowed to play that game.

It is worth mentioning Microsoft is exploring ways for you to trade in and resell your used games. This is rumored to mean that you can sell your digital license to play the game (registration) back to Microsoft, likely for Microsoft points. You can then trade in the game at Gamespot for some cash if you like. Either way, as it currently stands, the new owner would still have to pay a fee on top of the price of actually buying the physical copy.
Source

UPDATE:Used games may not have a fee but will still require online verification. It seems Microsoft is starting to get the message but the other points still stand.
Source

Is it worth mentioning that Microsoft if shafting Indie Developers as well? Where as on Playstation Network or (whatever the Wii has) Indie Developers can self publish their content easily. Playstation even encourages this. Microsoft however forces these Indie Devs to enter publishing deals with them to be allowed to market their content. You don't go through them, you don't get to sell what you developed.
Source

I'm not quite done yet! Now, I'm sure you heard a lot about "TV TV TV TV SPORTS TV TV SPORTS SPORTS TV." Yes, the Xbox is slated to be able to stream live tv, live sports, etc. So let me ask you this. You obviously already have something like cable or DirecTV (or at least I am assuming you do.) Do you really want to shell out hundreds of dollars more and pay a monthly subscription fee to have another television provider? Yes, I said hundreds of dollars, and I don't mean just the cost of the console. To view live TV from the Xbox you are required to purchase ANOTHER separate device for it to work (if you don't already have one that's compatible.) Why would you even consider shelling out more money for something you already have anyway? Even if you didn't, DirecTV is cheaper. Or you could even subscribe you Hulu.com and watch live tv on your computer. FOR MUCH CHEAPER. You essentially have to buy another cable box if you don't have one. And if you do... what do you need the Xbox One for?
Source

Update: Alright, so here's how it works it seems. The additional device you need is in fact a cable box of sorts. You don't already have one of those, you'll need to buy one (along with a television provider.) Xbox One does not provide you with the television service, they just... route it? Channel it? For lack of a better phrase.

Though again that makes me think... again, if you already have something like DirecTV or Cox Digital Cable, why do you need the Xbox one to stream tv? With the proper channels, you already have (Or can get) live sports and other shows.

Source

So far we've discovered that the Xbox One is not really a gaming console, at least... not a consumer friendly gaming console. It's being marketed as an all-in-one home entertainment system. Something to replace all of the other devices in your house. But there are drawbacks even to that. Put on your tin foil hats for this part folks. Take from it what you will, all I'll say is... possibilities...

The Xbox One's features will not function unless the Kinect is plugged in and active. This is not an optional piece anymore.
Source

So imagine your Kinect piece breaks? Tough luck, no more Xbox for you. But you know what's worse?

Pay attention, because this is important. The Kinect is always watching. Always listening. Even when the system is off.

Yes. One of the ways to turn the system on is to audibly say: "Xbox On" while the system is off. The Kinect, which is always on, hears you and turns it on. Now this might seem like a cool feature, but did you know Microsoft patented a feature that would allow the Kinect's camera (It's no longer just a sensor, but a camera) to spy on you for the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America?) While they may not actually do this, it is actually possible for them to do this now. It has a camera, and a microphone. The Kinect is always on. It is ALWAYS listening, ALWAYS watching.

An idea has been tossed around that by using this feature, it will allows game developers and movie produces to set a limited amount of how many people can be allowed to view the entertainment. So as a hypothetical example, you and three friends are watching a movie, which is the maximum allowed. A fourth friend enters the room and the Kinect's sensor registers the fourth individual. The movie stops and you a prompted to pay a fee so that the extra individual may also view the film. Again, that is NOT currently the case, but these are the ideas currently being tossed around with the system's current capabilities.
Source (listening)

Source (spying)

Now, just two more things and I'll be done here!

This isn't really a good or bad thing, but it's annoying. It also explains how they can prevent you from playing a used game if you didn't pay their fee. Xbox one no longer plays games off the discs, you HAVE to install them to the hard-drive in order to play them. I believe PS3 also has you do this (on a number of games but not always it seems), except that PS3 isn't trying to Nickle and Dime you at every corner. It also seems according to this article there is something related to the Online portion at the beginning of this post. The option is there for Developers to require the Xbox to always be online to play their particular game.Well, it seems PC gamers and console gamers have one thing in common now... DRM. (Digital Rights Management)

(At least pirates on PC can bypass DRM easily. Not an option for Consoles.)
Source

And last but not least, another annoyance... Xbox One will not be compatible with any and all current headsets. Nope, companies will either have to make new headsets altogether specifically for the Xbox One, and they have to adhere to what Microsoft wants. Look forward to price gouging.
Source

Oh, one more thing... If you have an Xbox 360, don't get rid of it. Why? Well if you want to keep playing your old 360 games you'll need it. The Xbox One isn't backwards compatible. At all. Not only that, but President of Microsoft's Xbox Division Don Mattrick insults the very notion of backwards compatibility! He calls it: "Backwards thinking."
Source

Source ("backwards thinking")

Another update! Some information has been released on how Xbox live will work with the Xbox One. Finally some good news here folks, but there is also some bad. We'll start with the good news! Things like your gamer tag, gamer score, achievements, and entertainment such as movies you may have digitally purchased/downloaded can be ported over from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One over Xbox live.

The bad part? As mentioned above and in the source article I'm about to give you (with it's own sources as well) the Xbox One is not backwards compatible at all. So if you bought ANY games from the Xbox Live Arcade, those won't be coming with you. So unless you want to have wasted your money in that department, hold on to your old 360 consoles.

At this time there is no confirmation on how much an Xbox live gold membership will cost on Xbox One, but I assume that it will be the same as it currently is as they have said before they intend to continue their support of the Xbox 360 Console, which already has a monthly fee for Xbox Live Gold memberships.

Source

That is all I have to say currently folks, and I hope you took the time to read this far. I'll conclude with the following... please... PLEASE do not buy this console. Paying for this supports greedy and anti-consumer business practices. Speak with your wallet, and pass up the Xbox One. No matter what games it might have that you want, even if they are exclusive. Do the right thing and make a statement. Refuse to be nickle and dimed like this. Refuse to be seen as a mindless consumer who will buy anything tossed to them.

We won't know much else until after E3, but as it stands now, the PS4 or a decent gaming PC is the best way to go for "Next-Gen" gaming. It goes without saying that in time some or all of this information could become outdated, it's up to Microsoft to amend these issues. For now though, it's all fact gathered from various interviews with magazines, the Xbox Reveal, and statements from Microsoft executive such as Corporate Vice President Phil Harrison and President of Microsoft's Xbox Division Don Mattrick.

If such a time does come that Microsoft corrects these issues then I will encourage the purchase of this console should you want it. I should mention that yes, PS4 does have some problems as well, but as it stands it is currently a better choice than Xbox One.

If you are willing to do so, please spread this post around. Liking is not even remotely necessary, but do please share it if you agree with and acknowledge what you've read here. The more people know, the fewer of them waste their money.

Thank you, kindly.

~Dylan Jordan

Robbie Rogers Set To Become First Openly Gay Player In Major League Soccer

$

Yes, Robbie Rogers did retire from pro soccer after coming out last February as a gay man.

But he's ready to resume his career and he will be doing so with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, USA Today reports.

The Galaxy, the team for which David Beckham played for five years, has not officially announced the deal but USA Today confirmed details with two people familiar with the negotiations who insisted on anonymity.

The Galaxy's leading scorer, Mike Magee, will reportedly head to the Chicago Fire as part of a trade deal.

Rogers spoke with Gay Star News earlier this week at the 2013 Voice Awards in Los Angeles, confirmed that he had been practicing with the Galaxy and that he hoped a deal for him to join the team was imminent.

'It's just kind of being worked out,' he said on Sunday (19 May) which was his 26th birthday. 'Chicago owns my rights and until they trade me to LA, I guess I'm owned by Chicago. It feels amazing to be back in California and obviously back on the soccer field.'

As recently as a month ago, Rogers was not planning to return to the sport. But he realized 'I just missed it.'

He had been staying in Huntington Beach, California, with his family and emailed Galaxy coach Bruce Arena an email to ask if I could come train.

Rogers also talked it over with Landon Donovan, his longtime friend and future Galaxy teammate who has been publicly supportive of Rogers and the idea of a gay player in the the MLS.

'I sat down with Landon and just wanted to get an idea of what he thought of me coming back and what the atmosphere might be like,' he tells USA Today. 'Regardless of the perception, we both agreed that we are at our happiest when we are helping people. I believe I'm happy now because I know that I'm helping people.'

Will John C. Reilly join the Marvel Universe for 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'? + Spoilers

$

0

James Gunn's "Guardians Of The Galaxy" promises to be one of the strangest of the Marvel movies so far, and that excites me.

Drew Pearce, who collaborated with Shane Black on the "Iron Man 3" script, was almost hired to work on the final polish for this film, but it looks like Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely will be doing the final polish on the script that Nicole Perlman and Chris McCoy wrote instead.

Quick side note… is Perlman the first female writer on a Marvel movie?

In a lot of ways, Marvel is treating "Guardians" as the beachhead for a new chapter of the universe, and they're seeding the film with archetypes that have worked well for them. Chris Pratt is onboard as Star-Lord, who is also known as Peter Quill, and they're looking to him to be the Robert Downey Jr. of this franchise. Fast, funny, able to play emotional while still getting big laughs.

Everyone in this film has a connection of some sort to Thanos, which is by design. Zoe Saldana (who apparently is not fully committed to the film yet) plays Gamora, whose entire race was wiped out by Thanos when she was just an infant. Thanos actually raised her, planning to make her a weapon when she got old enough, and she learned of his plans, leading her to run away. She has superhuman strength and speed, and she's been trained to be a master of all fighting arts, especially involving blades, something Thanos hoped to use for himself.

Drax, who will be played by Dave Batista in the film, actually started life as a saxophone player named Art. I'll give you a moment to bask in the possibility that we're going to see a flashback to Dave Batista playing sax. He was killed by Thanos in the Mojave Desert, where his "astral form" was later found by Kronos, who was trying to stop Thanos. He used this astral form to create a superhuman warrior named Drax, who can fly and who is practically invulnerable. He can fire cosmic blasts as well.

When we meet Rocket Raccoon in the film, he and his partner Wal Russ (a talking walrus) are guards at The Keystone Quadrant, an intergalactic asylum for the criminally insane. Again, I'll give you a moment. Soak that one in.

Reading this so far, you might suspect that Thanos is the main bad guy in the film, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Yondu, played by Michael Rooker, is this film's bad guy, a space pirate of sorts, and at least at the start of the film, Lee Pace will also be playing a villain who will eventually switch sides so he can be set up for his own spin-off film as… someone? Could he be Nova? Adam Warlock? Mar-Vell, which would allow Marvel to then introduce Ms. Marvel to their cinematic staple?

By far, though, the biggest news that's brewing about "Guardians" right now involves a character named Rhomann Dey. They've made an offer to John C. Reilly to play the part, and if he comes aboard, it's a big commitment. Basically, he's been designed as the Agent Coulson of the "Guardians" movies. He's the human agent who serves as a go-between, keeping the Guardians in line and reporting to SHIELD about their activities.

What's that you say? Rhomann Dey was the leader of the Nova Corps in the comics and not a human being on Earth? And he basically became the Abin Sur of the Marvel Universe when he picked Richard Rider to give his Nova powers to?

Hmmmmm. Very, very interesting.

There's a hint that we'll see some other familiar faces. Groot, for example, originally comes to Earth looking to experiment on humans, but Nick Fury talks him out of his and convinces him to help us instead. But Dey is going to be the primary face of normal humanity for the "Guardians" films, and Reilly would be an intriguing addition to the Marvel Universe. He's got the exact right demeanor for a movie featuring talking trees, weapon-bearing raccoons and walruses, and lots of drop-ins from outer space. Reilly will have a peer, someone who is their liaison for the Guardians, and Marvel is looking at names as disparate as Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman, and Ken Watanabe for that part.

What do you think? Sounds like "Guardians" is shaping up as a big, sprawling, vibrant new corner of one of the biggest cinematic universes around, and I'm crossing my fingers that Reilly makes his deal.

"Guardians Of The Galaxy" arrives in theaters August 1, 2014.

Where Latin music is concerned, Geoffrey Royce Rojas is a prince among men. Seriously. The stage name of the singer, songwriter, and record producer from the Bronx is Prince Royce. At age 24, after having released two records since 2010, he has won acclaim from his first label (he already has an album of hits titled #1's), gotten honored with the 2013 BMI Latin Songwriter of the Year award, and just got signed to record bachata albums in Spanish through Sony Music Latin, as well as English-language pop albums via RCA Records.

"It's the same label family, but the music and the attitude is way different," Royce says. "The things that I do have to try and keep separate are the meetings, as the brainstorming and marketing stuff can get confusing," he says with a laugh.

Where the BMI award is concerned, he is humbly grateful, amazed to be given such an opportunity.

"I write from the heart about the experience of being alive," Prince Royce says. "What sets me apart, I think, is the ways in which I write about love. We all want to do that, but when I write, I think I include matters of insecurity and self-esteem as well as passion. I always try to do real stuff."

As for the music, whether it's bachata, salsa, or an R&B groove like the one running through last year's Phase II album, Prince Royce will give each of his records something Latin.

"Bachata once had a bad rep, I know, as a vulgar dance sound, (LOL no) but I am, and listen to, so many things," Royce says. "There are beautiful melodies to be made, and songs that sing about beautiful people. I want to make music that's there when you cry as well as celebrating your birthday as well as being in the club. That's what's so romantic about doing all this."

Before jumping off the phone, Royce discusses being a young Latino from the Bronx and the responsibility he feels in regard to younger impressionable Latinos, something that Caucasian artists such as Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, or the guys from Vampire Weekend don't have to worry about.

"Yeah, but I'm fine with it," Royce says. "I have seen an awful lot of negativity in my old neighborhood, and I was fortunate enough to get out, achieve things, and see the world. A lot of people wanted to bring me down, but I didn't let that happen. I want to be up. I want to be a motivator."

If you know anyone from Latin America, or anyone whose parents are from Latin America, odds are they like to dance to Juan Luis Guerra.

Guerra is a Dominican merengue and bachata singer whose happy music can pull you out of the funkiest funk on the rainiest day. He's been making music for decades and continues to release hits -- it's worth noting that his music hasn't lost its "everything-is-going-to-be-ok-just-dance" edge in the slightest. Guerra says it's even his band's mission, "We all have it very clear from the moment we get on stage; our priority is to make people happy."

1. So who is Juan Luis Guerra?

-- He's written some of the most recognizable dance songs in Latin America but you'll probably never find him on the dance floor. "For me it's more important to make other people dance. But I CAN dance."

-- He's a happily married man who's not embarrassed to still write love songs for his wife. "Normally the things I like aren't the things my wife likes. I love being at my house, she loves going out. It's backwards, it's all backwards. But of course that's how it has to be. We complement each other. You have to sacrifice and be thankful for each other."

-- He's his harshest critic. "I actually don't enjoy hearing my music on the radio. I listen with a critical ear. I start saying "Caramba! Why didn't I sing this like this or like that." Musicians are "special" in that way."

2. Why is he relevant today?

-- He's still making music. This month he released a new live CD and DVD from a show during "Asondeguerra Tour" in Santo Domingo. It rained the entire two-hour concert, but the 50,000 people watching him didn't stop dancing for a second.

If you're thinking "Eh, this guy's old and doesn't speak to me at all…" you might be right, but you're probably wrong.

Guerra studied composition and jazz at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
"I heard things I had never heard. They're big on jazz, so I was introduced to Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane. I started to investigate that music and how I could adapt everything I was learning to Latin music. That had a huge impact on my music. When I can mix jazz or reggae with meringue I do."

After graduating in 1979 (OK that graduation year might make him seem old) he returned to the Dominican Republic and was set on forming a band -- like most Berklee graduates. "I didn't know I would work with meringue, bachata, and salsa specifically. I wanted to be a jazz guitarist, but getting to Dominican Republic the trajectory changed and I had the opportunity to work with meringue and doors opened from there," he says. He recorded some commercial jingles while he formed his band, the 4:40, who he still plays with.

3. The path to success takes three friends and VW Beetle.

The four-man-band would drive around Santo Domingo in an old Volkswagen Beetle listening to the radio, waiting to hear their song. This was the ritual they had for their first three albums. The fourth album, Ojala Que Llueva Café, was the first in which Guerra presented himself as a solo artist.

Guerra won his first Grammy for his fifth album Bachata Rosa (which features one of his greatest hits "La Bilirrubina"). The album sold more than five million copies and mixed jazz, rock, pop and merengue.

Where did "La Bilirrubina" come from?
"I had a concert in Panama coming up when I got hepatitis. My doctor came into the room and said to me, 'That concert isn't going to happen. You have high levels of bilirubin.' I said 'The bili-what?!' After that I decided to make a meringue for the bilirrubina."

His next album Areito in 1992 fused Folkloric merengue with African soukus. He won another Grammy for his merengue hit "Las Avispas".

Skip to 2007, four albums later. His 10th album La Llave De Mi Corazon won 7 Latin Grammys. Over the years Guerra's lyrics became more spiritual and social, like his song "La guagua (the bus)" about faulty social systems, which he made into another happy song.

4. What's the secret to music that doesn't age?

"We have the pleasure in the Dominican Republic of having really happy and danceable music, like merengue and bachata. With our music we've delivered various messages, but no matter what, say what we say, the percussions and happiness always comes out in our music."

5. If he had to explain who he was to someone who had never heard of him, what song would he choose?

"Depends on the situation. Our music takes you through different moods. I think "La Bilirrubina" could be one, or "Ojala Que Llueva Café" could be another. If it's a couple, "Mi Bendicion," which is a new one. I would need to see the person's face before choosing."

Guerra has made people happy for over 20 years with his melodies and lyrics. If he can still make this kind of music in his 50s, it just goes to show that aging depression is not a real thing... so get over turning 30 this year and go listen to "El Niágara en Bicicleta"– tranquilo Bobby, tranquilo.

There was only one good reason to trek it from Los Angeles to Bakersfield, CA this past Friday night: I got a backstage VIP pass to the kick-off concert to Juanes' highly anticipated 2013 "Loud and Unplugged" summer tour.

Without exaggerating, I can say that Juanes and his bandmates – Rafael Sandoval on the sax, Edilberto Lievano on the trombone, Orlando Barreda on the trumpet, Juan Pablo Daza and Fernando Tobon on guitar, Felipe Navia on bass, Felipe Alzate and Richard Bravo on percussion, Waldo Madera on drums, and Emmanuel Briceño on the keyboard - have never sounded tighter.

For one, Juanes has never toured with a full horn section. Then again, if you've listened to Juanes' MTV Unplugged album you know that he has strived for (and undoubtedly reached) a new level of musicianship. El maestro Juan Luis Guerra (who executive produced the Unplugged album) had a little something to do with that.

Summer vacation is almost here and students in the Puerto Rican town of Adela Rolon Fuentes de Toa Alta got a special treat before their final exams. The one-and-only Daddy Yankee dropped by their campus to offer some inspirational words.

El Big Boss has been doing quite a few good deeds lately and this one concerned his involvement with the Red Cross. Apparently the school he visited raised a ton of money for the charity’s “Unete al Movimiento” campaign.

As you may recall, we mentioned DY’s close ties to the Cross back in February. And we’re proud to say that he stuck to his word, becoming a major part of “Unete’s” Puerto Rico initiative.

And seeing what a good job he did, don’t be surprised if Daddy books a few commencement speaker gigs for hard working Class of 2013. Saludos Señor Yankee!

After the resounding success of her singles, "Ay" and "Brinca La Tablita," new music star Amara La Negra is still going strong in the music industry with her new song "El Poronpompon".

"It comes from the same line of 'Ay', but less aggressive. The beat is the brainchild of Combo De Los 15 that I loved since they presented me with it," said the novel artist who has become a sensation in urban music.

Diana de los Santos, better known as Amara La Negra, lives a great moment in showbiz thanks to the support she has received among children, youth and adults. "I want to take the opportunity to gradually show my vocal talent, which is actually Amara La Negra, because people do not want to put a title on my forehead that I am nothing more image and movement. Many do not know that I'm a professional, "said the star of the label NB remember.

The actress also defined her career right now as "the beginning of an empire. It is the beginning of many great things, is the beginning of Amara La Negra ".

From being the darling of Don Francisco, who opened the doors of the Child Clan when she was only four years to win the affection of everyone at Univision, this unique artist has shown the best of her talent for art.

"I was in the Clan Children six years, every Saturday, almost grew up in Sabado Gigante, there was dancing in the chain, participated in all it was Latin Grammy, Premio Lo Nuestro, Youth Award. I managed myself well in what was that environment, I took advantage and went preparing dance lessons, modeling, acting and singing," she said.

The problems of Tito 'El Bambino' are not over, after 16-year-old Jean Carlos Fernandez, claimed to have been beaten by the singer last weekend, is now getting death threats which prevent him from sleeping.

Tito has had to face justice because of Jean's allegations of assault. During his visit to the Criminal Investigation Corps in Puerto Rico, the interpreter said via Twitter Jean threatened to kill him.

"Yes, I fear for my life, but I will not raise any prosecution for all threats on Twitter that the young man said. This confirms that there is little parental supervision, "said the artist very worried.

Fernandez closed his account on the popular social network after the star's fans were launched against him , however, the legal representative of Tito revealed that they have a copy of the now defunct youth account for use if necessary.

Taylor Swift On Madonna: Singer Talks Giving Advice, Getting Inspiration

In terms of age and stature, Taylor Swift is sandwiched somewhere between Selena Gomez and Madonna -- at least according to last weekend's Billboard Music Awards, where Gomez represented the show's youngest performers and Madonna its most seasoned.

In a new interview with Billboard, Swift reflects on that position, saying she looks up to the 54-year-old Madonna, who took home Top Touring Artist honors, and avoids doling out advice to younger stars like Gomez.

"I never give advice unless someone asks me for it," she said when asked what lessons she would pass on to the 20-year-old Gomez and 19-year-old Ariana Grande. "One thing I've learned, and possibly the only advice I have to give, is to not be that person giving out unsolicited advice based on your own personal experience. I've always had a lot of older people giving me advice because I'm young, and in the end, it all comes down to who you want to be remembered as. Just be that."

Swift also seems to acknowledge that her career is not identical to Madonna's early days. Swift has developed a clear identity, whereas Madonna quickly became known for constantly reinventing herself.

"One element of Madonna's career that really takes center stage is how many times she's reinvented herself," Swift said when asked what she's learned from the original Material Girl's legacy. "It's easier to stay in one look, one comfort zone, one musical style. It's inspiring to see someone whose only predictable quality is being unpredictable."

Wii U Sales Jump 386% After Xbox One Presentation

While the Xbox One may have been appealing to some non-gamers, the gaming community reacted in a unified, "not interested" front, much to the chagrin of Microsoft. Now that people are disinterested in whatever Microsoft is peddling, why not just buy a Wii U or wait for a PS4, right? Well, it seems as if you aren't alone in your thought process.

Sites are reporting that the Wii U saw a sales increase of 386% on Amazon UK, with a huge jump from the #243 spot to #50. Now, this is probably just a temporary jump related to a price cut and not wholly Microsoft's fault, but one thing's for sure -- the next generation console wars are just getting started, and two of them aren't even out!

Source

as a lifelong nintendo fan, thanks for being the best marketing the wii u has had so far microsoft :D

first post don't kill me :(

note: the whole this might be because of the price cut was actually a mistake on the source's research because the price cut was on the regular version while the jump in sales was on the premium Wii U version which actually did not get a price cut.

Macklemore Basks In Hometown Love At Sasquatch

$

Seattle rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis' headlining set to open Sasquatch Fest Friday night was certainly a homecoming to rival all homecomings.

"I've been backstage with anxiety, thinking, 'This is your people, your family, the Northwest is gonna be here tonight,'" he told the audience at the Gorge Amphitheater, a stunning venue (and longtime home to Sasquatch) a four-hour drive east of Seattle."What do I say to these people? How do I address 30,000 people here?"

Then he delivered it: "I've been working my entire life to step up here onstage at the Gorge," he said, now emotional. "Nowhere in the world is as beautiful as the backdrop here."
This was a local boy done good, returning home to flaunt the pop glory and bask in the adoration of his most fervent fans, and they gave him a prince's welcome.

Earlier, the crowd watching Vampire Weekend, playing across the hillside venue, thinned to surprisingly sparse numbers as the buzz built for the hip hop duo's main stage arrival. A Euro-soccer-stadium-style chant echoed (how 'bout those Seattle Sounders, eh?) and horns trumpeted. And then there's Macklemore, in his rattle-snake-skin sequined robe, stomping and running along a stage jutting into the audience, doing his knees-bent, arms-flailing, "Whoa, I'm falling... maybe..." signature dance.

He rapped, "This is our evening, this is our night..." No, dude. This is your night (and Ryan Lewis' too, but mostly just yours).

And the socially-conscious rhymesayer came armed with a message, a few of 'em, actually, and the crowd agreed with their leader, who's a bit of an anomaly in the rap game.

His breakout LP with Lewis, The Heist, is colored with the childhood memories of an '80s baby--SATs, Nintendo, spiral-notebook classroom scribbles, those first Nike Air Jordans. But his more risky messages are aimed at rap music. He dissed the glorification of drug use in hip hop on "Otherside," an older track from his first collabo with Lewis, 2010's VS. Redux EP. He prefaced it with the confessional story of his own addiction that was first met with beer-hoisting hollers, but later, perhaps, moments of self-reflection for the intoxicated crowd.

"I never had moderation with drugs," he said. He preached of the horrors of OxyContin and Percocet addiction (which, like much of work class America, ravaged the Seattle area), and praised a 2008 rehab stint for setting his music career on track.

Then onto his next cause: Gay rights, and its role in hip hop, a long misogynistic genre. "I believe in compassion, love and tolerance," he preached before his breakout The Heist hit, "Same Love."

"And Washington State is leading the way!"

That was Macklemore's real message Friday night: The Pacific Northwest is the bestestest. He honored its rabid thrift shop and vintage culture in "Thrift Shop," featuring deep and smooth vocals from singer Wanz. Gold lights flashed, backup dancers worked it and brass wailed. Macklemore rolled across the stage on a second-hand scooter in the fur coat from the song's popular music video, rapping about broken keyboards and hand-me-down kneeboards. The Goodwills along I-90 will certainly be cleaned out by Tuesday.

He honored Dave Niehaus, the late Mariners baseball radio sportscaster, in "My Oh My," showing images of Ken Griffey Jr., the city's '90s sports super star, crushing home runs onscreen. He saluted a picture of the fallen Kingdome arena.

He wore a vintage Detlef Schrempf Seattle Sonics jersey in solidarity with the "F-ck the NBA" t-shirts in the crowd, protesting the vote preventing the team's return to Seattle.

"You have no idea how amazing it feels to be back home in the Pacific Northwest," he gushed.

That's not hyperbole. Considering the duo's whirlwind, worldwide press blitz behind The Heist, an independently-released album that's topped the charts and sold over 500,000, it's not hard to imagine a heartfelt return home for Macklemore.

He shouted out Spokane, Vancouver, BC, Portland and finally Seattle to a massive roar. Then he dedicated "Cowboy Boots" to the Emerald City's hipster 'hood Capitol Hill: "Cowboy boots doing lines at the bar / Where the time goes slow when you're drinking PBR / And we drink and get older / And some of us even try to get sober / Now here's to the assholes and the last calls."

There's a twinge of disdain for the hipster elite that's often dragged Macklemore through the mud in the press. But he's a rapper who does it his way, whether it's his interpretation of the hip hop genre, his version of "cool" or the messages he supports. And people from the Northwest--people accustomed to doing things their own way, too--are proud to call him their own.

He also asked that people coming to the show bring donations for Goodwill that was on-site to take donations.I never had much of an opinion of him and I really don't like Thrift Shop, but he seems like a nice guy and he always looks so happy when he performs so I'm glad he's finding success.

Story about the Convoy of Hope from the Christian Post.com

"As residents in Moore, Okla., recover from the damaging effects of an EF5 tornado which ripped through the center of the state on Monday, a faith-based outreach organization is teaming up with celebrity singer Joe Jonas to provide relief to the local community.

Convoy of Hope, a faith-based nonprofit which works internationally to provide disaster relief and community outreach, is partnering with Joe Jonas of The Jonas Brothers on-site in Moore today and tomorrow to provide necessary supplies, including food, water, and emergency equipment to residents hoping to gain some stability after seeing their homes ravaged by Monday's tragic natural disaster.

After supplying the community with necessities such as food and water, Jonas and the nonprofit volunteers will transfer into supplying cleanup supplies, such as trash bags, so residents may begin to clean-up the damage caused by Monday's tornado, which tore through 13,000 homes, multiple schools, and a hospital, killing 24 people in its destructive path.

Jeff Nene, national spokesperson for Convoy of Hope, told The Christian Post on Friday that the most important aspect of providing on-site relief to the people of Moore is to remind them that there is hope for a better tomorrow...."

Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry has surprised middle school students in Ohio by showing up at a musical concert and donating $100,000 to help student athletes in the city's South-Western schools.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Perry was drawn to Finland Middle School on Friday after seeing a TV report about teacher Mary Mulvany starting a foundation to raise scholarship money to cover fees.

South-Western schools earned national attention when athletics and extra-curricular activities were eliminated after a failed levy in 2009. The ballot request was later approved by voters, and sports, clubs and other activities were resurrected for a fee.

Perry says he wants to sponsor as many children as possible and wants part of the money to go toward Finland and some to the foundation.

Mulvany says hundreds of children will be helped by Perry's contribution.

snap for the kids, snap for the kids two times

Blah, blah, blah he makes stereotypical and bad movies but this seems nice.

For 'Graceland' dwellers, life is hardly a beach
The USA Network offers a gritty drama about undercover federal agents working out of a South Bay mansion.

By Alan Eyerly
May 24, 2013, 8:30 a.m.
"Graceland," an original crime drama premiering June 6 on USA Network, isn't set in Memphis.

Instead, the location is sunny and sexy Manhattan Beach, where agents with the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement mastermind dangerous sting operations. When they're not surfing or partying, that is.

Sound farfetched? Maybe, but "Graceland" is inspired by the true story of a beachfront mansion once owned by a drug kingpin — and huge Elvis Presley fan. Seized by the U.S. government in 1992, the mansion was used until 2001 as a secret operations base.

Jeff Eastin, the show's creator and executive producer, recalls that he was impressed "right off the bat" when former inhabitants told him about the intense goings-on at Graceland. Despite their proximity to surf and sand, these undercover feds led extremely stressful lives.

"There was a burnout rate of about two years," Eastin explains. "Dating was impossible. You never told anybody what you really did for a living. Your life was on the line all the time dealing with drug dealers and cartels. Then when you came home you had all the usual issues, such as cleaning the bathroom."

Eastin, who also created and serves as executive producer of the "White Collar" crime series on USA, points out that "Graceland" marks a "big-time departure" for the basic cable network, which has built a successful brand with so-called blue-sky programming.

"We want to push the limit a little bit more," he says of his gritty drama. "We try to keep it fairly light on 'White Collar.' We want it to be open to anyone without previous knowledge of the show. 'Graceland' is different."

Eastin says he hopes "people will look to USA for this new direction and get on board with it right out of the blocks," noting that each one-hour episode of "Graceland" builds on the previous installment — growing darker and darker as the season progresses.

The fictional roommates of "Graceland" have it rough — even though they're young, attractive and living rent-free on prime beachfront property.

Paul Briggs (Daniel Sunjata, "Rescue Me"), the alpha male on this "island of misfit toys," is an FBI legend under increased scrutiny because of his troubled past and unorthodox law enforcement methods.

Briggs reluctantly takes on the assignment of training newcomer Mike Warren (Aaron Tveit, "Les Misérables"), an ambitious, quick-study FBI rookie. Being sent on a secret mission to Graceland is initially a disappointment for Warren, who anticipated a fast-track assignment in Washington, D.C.

Another housemate is Joe "Johnny" Tuturro (Manny Montana, "Chicago Code"), a prankster who nearly became a gangbanger like his brother before training as a Navy SEAL and later joining the FBI.

Dale "DJ" Jakes (Brandon Jay McLaren, "Falling Skies") is the lone wolf of this odd bunch. A short-tempered and highly territorial ICE agent, he nevertheless becomes a team player in the clutch.

The women of the house are Catherine "Charlie" DeMarco (Vanessa Ferlito, "Stand Up Guys") and Paige Arkin (Serinda Swan, "Breakout Kings").

Charlie is a versatile FBI agent who can pose as anyone from a strung-out druggie to a polished businesswoman. And Paige is a hard-charging DEA agent who looks the part of a Manhattan Beach surfer girl.

Although the subject matter is heavy — narcotics trafficking and other major crimes — "Graceland" has an undercurrent of humor mixed with bikinis, surfboards and beach counterculture.

People often wonder how a show set in one of the most scenic places on Earth can credibly delve into ruthless underworld violence, according to Eastin. Though there is a certain amount of irony, he says, "We definitely get there."

FEMME ON FIRE: VANESSA FERLITO
by Vanessa Butler

It’s no lie when we say we’ve never spoken with anyone as dedicated to a role as the gorgeous Vanessa Ferlito. This beautiful Italian, whom you may remember from a rather iconic lap dance in Tarantino’s Death Proof, is back on television starring in USA’s new original series Graceland as Charlie DeMarco, an undercover FBI agent. Ferlito has always been drawn to roles of strong heroines, and this one is just that. “Charlie is very strong, but, my god, she breaks down,” Ferlito explained during her interview. “She’s very vulnerable. She’s on the brink, she’s about to lose her mind.” Read on to hear about her role, her job as a single mother and what she thinks of the insane world of undercover agents.

Playboy.com: Graceland is based on a true story; what exactly is true about it?

Ferlito: The house was confiscated from a huge drug lord who was obsessed with Elvis paraphernalia, and when they confiscated the house, the name just stuck, so they kept it as Graceland. It’s about three agencies, six different agents in one house living together. That never happens…it just doesn’t happen anymore. It was sort of an experiment, I think, and that experiment will drive you mad. Even though you’re a family, there’s no escaping it. Living through it would be like living in a house of actors, six of them. You’d lose your mind! And that’s not even a good example because what these undercover agents do is so dark.

If somebody is on your trail and they happen to find and follow you to your house, everybody there is going down. It’s like a fish living in a fishbowl, really. It’s your sanctuary, but you never know if somebody is going to show up and kill all of you. I can’t even believe people do this stuff, let alone live together! And the really sick part is that not only are they always undercover, risking their lives—we’re not talking undercover trying to take down an insurance salesman; they’re trying to take down the biggest heroin dealers in all of California! Serious killers! Coming face to face with them, becoming one of their own, doing whatever they have to do to portray that person and really become that person so that they don’t lose their life. And with that they might pick up an addiction. It’s sad; people are intrigued by it, but it’s really sad.

With a person like Charlie, my character, she’s young! She’s a young, beautiful girl who can’t fall in love with anybody because she’s not allowed to bring them back to her house. She can’t tell him what she does for a living so she’s constantly lying. It’s just really crazy. I read the script and I knew that I had to do it. I still can’t believe what we shot this season; I had no idea that it was going to be this intense. The pilot was weak in comparison to what I’m doing in episode four and five.

Playboy.com: It’s all about keeping secrets in this show. Are you good at keeping secrets?

Ferlito: I’m the worst. I can’t lie for shit. I start stuttering, I sweat and then I just want to tell them. I’m a horrible liar.

Playboy.com: You guys unveiled at SXSW this year. How was it seeing an immediate reaction from these people who have just watched the episode?

Ferlito: Incredible, people love it! I just keep saying to them, “Okay, you loved the pilot? Wait until you see the show. You’re not going to believe it.” We’re getting so much love and it’s really a great feeling because it’s a really good show. It’s a great feeling!

Playboy.com: This is the first show you’ve done since CSI: NY. Have you missed working in television?

Ferlito: I guess you grow up. I was on that TV show years ago and then I left. I went out there and I did movies and I did exactly what I wanted. I worked with Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone! I live a very blessed life. But there comes a time when you’re a mother, a single mother, that you can’t always do the cool films, you can’t live off that. So I looked for something that I would be able to have enough time with my son and still work good work, meaning I’d be able to push the limit, not have too many boundaries and be able to be creative. I found that with Graceland. I am telling you, I couldn’t have asked for a better role—can’t wait to get back to it! Everybody’s like, “Can you please take a movie?” [laughs] But I took some time off after the show to stay in Florida with my son; he’s five so there was no action. I just can’t wait to get back to Graceland, I’m so obsessed with Charlie and playing her.

Playboy.com: What’s your favorite quality about Charlie?

Ferlito: Her loyalty, she’s so ambitious. She is relentless! She doesn’t let anything go—she’s on a mission and she’s going to get it all under control. She’s not going to let her house fall apart. But when she does start to fall apart, she does handle it gracefully. I don’t know if I would handle it as well. But no matter what happens, she’s still hanging on by a thread and going hard. She loves what she does, and I guess that’s why she and I are very similar. She’s why I just gave it my all. Even the darkest moments, I went there, I really went there.

Playboy.com: Did you get to do any cool training?

Ferlito: We were sent a bunch of books on the subject, and then we went to gun training. We trained with SWAT guys who taught us how to clear houses and stuff. Then we had the chance to sit down with real undercover federal agents. It was real thorough. It was incredible to hear the stories these people had; some of them are just unbelievable. It’s unbelievable what these people have endured, seen and have chosen to sacrifice so that they can do what they do. They’re not getting married, not having children…It’s really intense.

Playboy.com: What’s been your favorite moment on set so far?

Ferlito: Harassing the boys! Harassing them! I’m going to get charged because they’re all so beautiful!

Playboy.com: What else are you working on this summer?

Ferlito: We just wrapped in March and I’ve been in Florida since then. I just got back to New York this past Sunday. I had my first meeting, but I’m very picky with the stuff that I do; if you know any of the other things that I’ve done, you know I’m picky and choosy. So I’m just waiting to find that great script or role that they want me to do, but if it doesn’t happen, then that’s fine too. I mean, whatever happens, happens. I always have a job: I’m a mother, I’m a single mother, so I’m okay! [laughs]

Playboy.com: What’s your…

Favorite drink: Water. Dead serious.

Favorite food: Oh god, that’s a hard one. I’m a gavone. Do you know what a gavone is? It’s Italian; it’s a person who can’t stop eating. I’d have to say Italian food since I’m Italian, but I love food, period; I don’t stop.

Most embarrassing moment: I feel like I embarrass myself every day because I have no filter. So I just talk and talk and then it’s like, “Oh my god, what am I saying?” But working with Aaron Tveit, who I’m obsessed with, all year I was like, “I wanna make out with Aaron, I love Aaron,” as a joke. He’s really like a brother, but I love him. So finally the last scene of the whole season, really intense, I’m being tortured, they call action and Aaron comes up and starts making out with me. I have blood all over me. I died. I started screaming, “AARON! I WASN’T READY!” He was on the floor. Everyone was dying; everyone was there, even Jeff Eastin, the creator. And I was so mad. I had blood all over my mouth, I didn’t know if I had flossed. Man. So upset.

Worst pickup line: Oh god, I don’t know, nobody picks me up! They’re scared; they don’t even come near me! I’ve been single for so long. They don’t pick me up. [laughs]

The Most Controversial Moments at the Cannes Film Festival

France’s Cannes Film Festival has seen its share of controversies since it started in 1946. Blame the Riviera sun or the filmmaking iconoclasts that gather on the red carpet each year, but various high jinks and bizarre publicity stunts have often dominated the festivities. Bold action isn’t always required to shake things up, however. Often times it’s just the movies themselves that cause a scene with audiences and the Cannes jury. With the current 66th annual festival underway, we wanted to take a look at ten of Cannes most controversial moments.

Lars and Hitler

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room, shall we? While it’s no longer shocking to see Lars von Trier’s name pop up when controversies abound, the polarizing Danish director had the biggest foot-in-mouth moment during the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Von Trier made an uncomfortable comment about “sympathizing” with Hitler during a press conference with Kirsten Dunst to promote Melancholia:

“I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, yes absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end. I think I understand the man.”

A few awkward glances and nervous murmurs from the crowd later, Von Trier found himself banned from the festival, despite an official apology (several, actually). He was pursued by the French authorities for criminal charges, which were later dropped. Von Trier vowed to never make a public statement again and is absent at this year’s Cannes. Festival officials insist the filmmaker simply missed the deadline to submit his upcoming Nymphomaniac for consideration and that he’s not actually banned from the fest.
Several years before that, Von Trier’s Antichrist caused a stir amongst Cannes audiences, some who reportedly fainted from shock. The ecumenical jury called it “misogynist.”

Spike Lee and a Louisville Slugger

Spike Lee’s list of people he has a beef with is quite long, and one name recalls a tense moment at Cannes in 1989. Acclaimed director Wim Wenders was serving as the jury president at the time. The German filmmaker shared that he didn’t award Lee’s film Do the Right Thing the Golden Palm, because he felt Lee’s character Mookie (portrayed by the Malcolm X director) was unheroic. Lee was outraged.“Wim Wenders had better watch out ’cause I’m waiting for his ass. Somewhere deep in my closet I have a Louisville Slugger bat with Wenders’ name on it,” he spewed.

Brown Bunny flop

What’s up Cannes? What do you have against long, wordless scenes of people driving and unsimulated oral sex with Chloë Sevigny? Vincent Gallo’s The Brown Bunny divided audiences at the festival in 2003, with film critic extraordinaire Robert Ebert calling it “the worst film in the history of the festival.” A war of words broke out between the men, and Gallo sulked back home only to edit out a quarter of his hazy, cross-country indie. A later screening at the Toronto International Film Festival won Gallo the positive reviews he was hoping for, but his Cannes experience made an indelible mark.

The War on Moore and Tarantino

Michael Moore’s 2004 documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11, a critical look at the War on Terror, won him the honorable Palme d’Or from then jury president Quentin Tarantino. The film received a minutes-long standing ovation and became one of the only documentaries in cinema to win the Golden Palm, but critics derided the decision calling it a political maneuver. Even Cannes director Gilles Jacob felt the film won for the wrong reasons, but Tarantino has continued to defend his decision to this day.

Female trouble

This year’s festival lineup features one female director (out of 19) competing for the coveted Palme d’Or— Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi’s Un château en Italie (A Castle in Italy) — which we guess is a step up from last year when there were no women in the running. The 2012 shortlist was consisted of 22 men. A bitter letter published in Le Monde last year, signed by a group of female filmmakers, condemned the decision: “Never let the girls think they can one day have the presumptuousness to make movies or to climb those famous Festival Palace steps, except when attached to the arm of a prince charming.” The newest study on women in Hollywood from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism reveals women are still significantly underrepresented in movie speaking roles (out of 4,475 speaking characters, only 28.4% were women) and behind the camera. Out of 1,228 directors, producers, and writers who worked on the top 100 grossing films last year, only a dismal 16.7% were women.

The Mayor of Camden, Councillor Jonathan Simpson, has named the Amy Winehouse Foundation his charity of the year.

Re-elected on May 15 after the council's annual meeting, the Mayor will help raise funds for the charity, which seeks to provide a schools drug and alcohol education awareness programme called the Resilience Programme. Speaking after his election, Simpson stated:"Amy Winehouse was a popular figure in Camden and leaves a lasting legacy. The Foundation are a fantastic cause and I not only look forward to raising much needed funds for their work, but also supporting their aim of increasing drug and alcohol education to young people."

Meanwhle, Councillor Simpson's Mayoress for the coming year has been named as Puppini Sisters vocalist Marcella Puppini. "I am incredibly honoured to be asked to be by Jonathan's side as Mayoress of Camden," she said. "Camden is famous around the world because of its wonderful music heritage. I greatly admire Jonathan's passion and beliefs, and am truly looking forward to helping promote the local thriving music scene".

Camden Council recently gave the go-ahead to plans to install a statue of late singer Amy Winehouse in the borough. Artist Scott Easton's sculpture of the 'Back To Black' singer has been in the works for some time but, according to the Camden New Journal, Camden Town Conservation Authority had stated its opposition to the proposal. However, after a meeting earlier this month, local councillors approved the project and the statue will now be installed at a balcony in at Camden's Roundhouse venue this September.
