  • Jerrod Carmichael (The Carmichael Show) talked to Chelsea Handler about it yesterday, when the episode "Shoot-Up-Able" was originally supposed to air.

  • The episode would have been about his character surviving a mass shooting and dealing with the trauma

  • Says [paraphrasing] "How can it be too soon when it always happens?"

  • Understands why NBC would pull it from rotation but says it seems like the station "Doesn't think America is smart enough to handle real dialouge" about shootings.

Colin Trevorrow's 'The Book of Henry' will make a lot of 'Star Wars' fans very, very nervous

Colin Trevorrow's 'The Book of Henry' is getting universally panned, with some critics comparing it to 'The Room' and 'Birdemic' in terms of how bizarre its awfulness apparently is. It's described by Mashable as 'a quirky feel-good drama about a preteen genius who sends his feckless mother on a revenge mission against a sexually abusive neighbor'.

Of concern to many is the director's upcoming project: 'Star Wars: Episode IX'. Daniel Schindel of The Film Stage commented, "Going forward, Colin Trevorrow hopefully won’t be put in charge of anything too impor — oh, Jesus, that’s right."

The Book Thief

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

About: It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Speak

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

About: "Speak up for yourself--we want to know what you have to say." From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless, outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. As time passes, she becomes increasingly isolated and practically stops talking altogether. Only her art class offers any solace, and it is through her work on an art project that she is finally able to face what really happened at that terrible party: she was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. But this time Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and thereby achieves a measure of vindication. In Laurie Halse Anderson's powerful novel, an utterly believable heroine with a bitterly ironic voice delivers a blow to the hypocritical world of high school. She speaks for many a disenfranchised teenager while demonstrating the importance of speaking up for oneself.

Speak was a 1999 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature.

 The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

About: The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

About: Carmen got the jeans at a thrift shop. They didn’t look all that great: they were worn, dirty, and speckled with bleach. On the night before she and her friends part for the summer, Carmen decides to toss them. But Tibby says they’re great. She'd love to have them. Lena and Bridget also think they’re fabulous. Lena decides that they should all try them on. Whoever they fit best will get them. Nobody knows why, but the pants fit everyone perfectly. Even Carmen (who never thinks she looks good in anything) thinks she looks good in the pants. Over a few bags of cheese puffs, they decide to form a sisterhood and take the vow of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants . . . the next morning, they say good-bye. And then the journey of the pants — and the most memorable summer of their lives — begins.

The Harry Potter Series

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

About: Orphan Harry learns he is a wizard on his 11th birthday when Hagrid escorts him to magic-teaching Hogwarts School. As a baby, his mother's love protected him and vanquished the villain Voldemort, leaving the child famous as "The Boy who Lived". With his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry has to defeat the returned "One Who Must Not Be Named".

Karrueche Tran is granted a 5-year permanent restraining order against Chris Brown

  • Karrueche filed for a 3-year restraining order against Chris back in February. She was granted a temporary restraining order then, while her team tried to serve Chris the legal papers. Chris was finally served on his birthday in May.

  • Karrueche was supposed to testify in late May and tried to via phone since she was filming a TV show in New Orleans.

  • Karrueche was in court today and testified, while being grilled by Chris' lawyer, David Gammill. Chris refused to show up in person and wanted to testify via phone, but the judge refused. His lawyer claimed that Chris didn't have to show up because he was never served, but there's video evidence that he was.

  • Chris became extremely aggressive after Karrueche broke up with him because he had a baby with another woman. Chris was mad that Karrueche wouldn't give back rings that he gave her as gifts and started threatening her.

  • Karrueche showed audio evidence from voicemails. She also showed text messages she's received from Chris and testified that he has beat her before.

  • The voicemails included Chris cursing and spewing threats. The text messages said: "I'm not being nice to you no more, if I see you out in public again and I'm there I will make you hate me even more, don't be anywhere I'm out in public, I'm going to ban you from all events," "I can get my money back and I'm tired of playing games," "Bitch I will beat the shit out of you," "I promise you I will make your life hell," and "I want my motherfucking rings back or I'm gonna hurt your limbs."

  • Chris also commented on an instagram photo of Karrueche and Michael B. Jordan, "Imma kill blood."

  • Karrueche was granted a 5-year permanent restraining order, 2 years more than she asked for, despite Chris' lawyer claiming that Karrueche "deserved it" because she was "taunting him" by claiming she sold the rings so that he would finally leave her alone.

Cover Songs By Your Faves That Are Better Than The Original

$

Let's start this list off with a timeless bop. Can you believe it's been 16 years since this song came out? The original by Labelle was good, but this version was just a little bit saucier, not to mention the great performances given by all the ladies. It's a shame that the only ones with viable careers now are Missy and Pink. Anyways check out the original from 1975 to get your entire life, but also to see that everything Lady Gaga is doing has already been done before any of us were born...oop.

Get into this throwback to when Mariah actually used to sing live in 1993, rip. The good sis covered Harry Nilsson's song from 1972 and did a pretty damn good job. She emoted much more than Nilsson did and really captured the devastating feeling of not being able to live with a broken heart. Check out the original here for reference.

It's been 16 years since Aaliyah passed away but her music was so ground breaking and ahead of it's time that much of it still sounds fresh. The Isley Brothers are also legends in their own right whose music influenced much of today's R&B, not to mention hip hop with how much they've been sampled, lol. Their original record is...interesting, but Aaliyah's angelic vocals and harmonies take the song to another level.

Ngl, I stopped checking for Celine after I Drove All Night but that doesn't mean that she's still not a fucking icon. She completely owned Eric Car(t)men's 1976 song to the point that people actually think it's her song, lol. It's been a staple in movie soundtracks from Clueless to Bridget Jones Diary and makes you feel pure emotion every time you hear it. Here is the original version...um, the instrumental is great!

So much #blackgirlmagic in this vid. I didn't even remember all the celeb cameos (TLC, Gladys Knight etc) or the fact that Whitney was pregnant with Bobbi Kristina at the time. Chaka Khan is in the mix as well, cuz it's ha song (check it out here). It's hard to believe that Whitney and Bobbi are gone, but at least we still have her music.

While some may know the Dixie Chicks for calling out Bush on his fuckshit, I know them for making an amazing version of Landslide that completely bypasses the original. Stevie Nicks version from 1975 was aight, but lets be real...South Park wasn't kidding when they said she sounded like a goat, lol (don't @ me).

Just kidding! Here is Destiny's Child version of the song. What I wish I could post is the clip of Beyonce claiming that she wrote this song on TRL with Carson having to check ha on live tv, but that's been long scrubbed from the internets, smdh. Anyways it was the Bee Gees that originally did this song with Samantha Sang in 1977. Btw shout out to the 70s for seemingly having a lot of good music to cover.

Honorable Mentions:

Rihanna covering Hero by Mariah. I don't even need to link to that shit, because it's that fucking legendary. Rih. Did. That!!1!

One Direction coveringBittersweet Symphony by the Verve. It sounds just like the original, bless.

Beck covering The Korgis Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime for the soundtrack of one of the greatest movies of all time *Kanye voice*...no, actually I'm serious about this one.
