The 10 Best Nirvana Songs

$

0

Nirvana came to a sudden end 19 years ago this month when Kurt Cobain committed suicide. The group released only three studio albums, but they left behind tons of other material and a huge fan base that only seems to grow as the years go by. Next year they are eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and it's extremely likely they will get in on their first ballot. We asked our readers to vote on their favorite Nirvana songs. It got a huge response, and the top 10 goes way beyond the obvious hits. Click through to see the results.

10. 'Lounge Act'

The ninth song on Nevermind hardly sounds like the work of any traditional lounge act, but the group felt that Krist Novoselic's opening bass seemed like the kickoff to a lounge song. Instead, it leads into a Pixies-inspired song about a guy who feels torn between his girlfriend and his band. It was a dilemma that Cobain felt himself when the band's growing success caused tension with girlfriend Tracy Marander. The group couldn't come up with any way to end the song, so they merely slowed down the tape machine.

9. 'Sappy'

Kurt Cobain spent years fiddling with "Sappy," recording it over and over again between 1987 and 1993. He was never quite happy with it, though they ultimately released it as a bonus track on the 1993 AIDS relief compilation No Alternative. By this point it had been retitled "Verse Chorus Verse," but there's another Nirvana song with that title. It's caused much confusion over the years, so most Nirvana fans now refer to this as "Sappy." (Got all that?) Cobain never saw "Sappy" as a fully realized track, but the fans loved it and the band brought it back into their set list on their final tour in 1994.

8. 'In Bloom'

"In Bloom" paints a rather bleak portrait of a rock fan who "sell[s] the kids for food,""likes to shoot his gun" and "likes our pretty songs." The song was written before Nirvana attracted many yokels to their shows, but Cobain was already horrified at the idea of violent thugs taking pleasure in his songs. "In Bloom" was originally a hardcore punk song , but Cobain gave it a much softer edge before they cut it for Nevermind. In a fantastic bit of irony, it was a hit single, and it brought Nirvana many of the fans Cobain claimed to despise. They sang along with it every night, even if they didn't know what it means. To put it mildly, Cobain had complex feelings about fame and mainstream success.

7. 'Aneurysm'

Kurt Cobain's tumultuous relationship with Bikini Kill drummer Toby Vail inspired many of Nirvana's most emotional songs, including the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" b-side "Aneurysm.""Love you so much it makes me sick," he sings. "She keeps it pumpin' straight to my heart." Vail may have given Kurt an "aneurysm," but not long after this song came out he began dating Courtney Love. Despite appearing on no actual studio album, the song was a regular part of Nirvana's live show, and it's become a massive fan favorite.

6. 'All Apologies'

"All Apologies" originally appeared on In Utero, but the version everyone remembers was recorded in November of 1993 for Nirvana's MTV Unplugged album. Watching the performance after Cobain's death, it's hard to hear it as anything but a suicide note. "I wish I was like you," he sings to his huge global audience. "Easily amused." It ends with him repeating the line "all in all is all we are" 13 times.

Footballers Mario Götze and Marco Reus in GQ Germany; are fans of Justin Bieber

On the pitch the two Borussia Dortmund shooting stars seem to understand each other blindly. And when it comes to music they're on the same page as well. Both like the songs of the Canadian pop star Justin Bieber. The 19-year-old Götze told GQ Germany in an interview: "Marco is a mad Justin Bieber fan. I'm nowhere on that level." The 4 years older Reus sings along to the Canadian teen idol's songs and knows all the lyrics, he says, which he himself didn't.

Götze also revealed they sometimes listen to Bieber songs "for fun" before going out on the pitch. "Almost all of us are still very young, so I guess we put on slightly different music than other teams."

A similar music taste isn't the only reason why Götze and Reuss get along so well: "When we met on the national team, we clicked right away. The fact that we like similar music helps. But it's not decisive." says Reuss, who already admitted to a passion for Bieber's songs in February, telling [German youth magazine] "Bravo": "Justin Bieber is one of the most successful musicians, he has already achived incredibly much in his young career. I really like listening to his songs."

He's not embarrassed about his musical affinity for Bieber: "I stand by everything I do". But most often he listens to R'n'B and hip hop: "My favourite artists are Chris Brown, Drake and Trey Songz".

Tom Hiddleston finds female attention ''alarming''.

The 31-year-old British actor was crowned the 'Sexiest Movie Star Alive' in a magazine poll in January, beating Robert Pattinson and Ryan Gosling to the desirable title.

However, the Hollywood star is baffled by his sex symbol status and is always surprised when women flirt with him.

Speaking on UK TV show 'This Morning', he said:''With sexiest, it's a subjective thing. It's alarming when attention comes your way.''

Hiddleston believes women may have voted for him because they are attracted to his evil alter ego Loki from 'Thor', 'Avengers Assemble' and the upcoming 'Thor: The Dark World'.

He mused:''It might be when I die my hair black, and wear white make-up, leather and metal, there's a particular vibe going on there.''

10 Actors Cut Out Of Terrence Malick Films & How They Reacted

$

We’ve all been there. Cast as the lead in a meaty, dialogue-heavy role in a surefire masterpiece from one of the most unassailable geniuses of modern filmmaking, only to be reduced to sifting through the finished film on freeze frame occasionally shouting "Look! That’s my shadow on that fern!" or "Hey! That’s the back of my head near that egret!" The one comfort we can take when this inevitability occurs, is that we’re in fine company on the Malick cutting room floor. The only question is, whose lead will we follow in reacting to our role’s excision or drastic reduction?

Terrence Malick has a storied history with actors, one that can only continue to get more thickety as his output increases, and as the casts for his films expand. But it was really only with 1998’s gorgeous hymnal to the brutalizing effect of war on nature and humanity, "The Thin Red Line," that his propensity for entirely removing whole roles and performances found real expression, and since then the mythos of the roulette wheel one spins when accepting a role in a Malick film has only grown. It's a little unfair -- "The Thin Red Line" always had an enormous cast (it's about a war, after all); many of those often referred to as having been cut never actually filmed a scene; and others had roles that were only ever going to be cameos removed. The key factor is that many of the affected actors on that film and since then have been very high profile, but again, Malick seems to attract big names in droves, so in droves they will fall by the wayside.

Malick's latest, "To the Wonder," in theaters and on (sacrilegious!) VOD this Friday, has also made headlines for who's not in it as for who is. So we thought we'd take this chance to run through the list of actors dropped from Malick's films, or those who had their roles greatly curtailed, and the various ways they dealt with the disappointment. Read, and judge for yourselves who did it best -- that way you'll be prepared when that phone call comes to let you know that "Untitled Malick Project" will not, after all your months of shooting in that cornfield, boast your involvement at all.

Actor: Mickey Rourke
Film: "The Thin Red Line"
How Badly Was His Role Affected: Excised completely
Bitterness Level: 8/10 lemons

What Happened & How He Reacted: On the one hand, it feels like Mickey Rourke has kind of one of the more legitimate beefs. His role wasn't just whittled down, not a single frame made it into the finished film, and his performance, which he called in a 2005 interview "some of the best work I ever did" really only exists for public consumption in a couple of deleted scene extras on the Criterion release. And like so many other actors on this list, he seems to have felt a little betrayed or badly used by Malick -- from that same interview: "I'd gone through a really bad time and Terry knew about it so he incorporated it into the character. It really worked."
On the other hand, a lot of his reaction seems out of step with what most observers would assume were Malick's actual motives behind the edit. While his track record makes it probable that Rourke was nixed for narrative purposes (Malick famously "finding" the film in the edit), Rourke claimed the reasons were much more personal: "There were political reasons why I was out of the movie. That really upset me... just because of the temperature of me and the industry, my scenes were cut." Even if Malick does not in fact float on a gauzy higher plane above the dirty dealings of Hollywood, it still seems unlikely to us that he'd have gotten rid of Rourke to satisfy someone else's whims, if he'd really loved his performance and felt it fitted within the film.

Actor: Adrien Brody
Film: "The Thin Red Line"
How Badly Was His Role Affected: Dramatically reduced from lead to support, dialogue down to a couple of spoken lines.
Bitterness Level: 7/10 lemons

What Happened & How He Reacted: Adrien Brody, of course, is still in "The Thin Red Line," but his role was not the lead he expected, performed and read in the script and the book on which the script was based. Malick found his attention wandering from Brody's character in the edit and focusing instead on Jim Caviezel's, to the detriment of the former's screen time. We should remember that, significantly, this was Brody pre-"The Pianist" and it's clear he expected his role here to be his big break. In fact, he mentioned in a 2001 Independent interview (text here) that: "The pressure on that film was that I had to carry the movie with a cast of stars that I truly admired -- Nick Nolte and Sean Penn in particular. You hear horror stories about Sean Penn, that he can be a real bastard if he doesn't admire your work."
But after a grueling 6-month shoot in "a filthy costume which they wouldn't wash," only disappointment awaited. Again a sense of betrayal comes through: "I was so focused and professional, I gave everything to it, and then to not receive everything...in terms of witnessing my own work. It was extremely unpleasant because I'd already begun the press for a film that I wasn't really in. Terry obviously changed the entire concept of the film. I had never experienced anything like that..." He went on to suggest that Malick's own status as a filmmaker may be rather inflated: "You know the expression 'Don't believe the hype'? Well, you shouldn't."

Actor: Christopher Plummer
Film: "The New World"
How Badly Was His Role Affected: Reduced
Bitterness Level: 7/10 lemons

What Happened & How He Reacted: Christopher Plummer waited a good few years before letting rip, in amusing and quite public fashion, on Malick. Believing his role as Captain Newport to have been decimated by Malick's editing process, he said to New York Magazine in 2011: "[Malick is] fascinated by nature, and just cuts to birds." He also claims he wasn't alone in being disgruntled on that set: "Colin Farrell kept saying, 'My character, he's a fuckin' osprey. That's how he sees me.' You’d be playing a passionate scene, and he’d say in that strange southern voice of his, mixed with Harvard and Oxford, ‘Ah, jes’ stop a minute, Chris. I think there’s an osprey flying over there. Do you mind if I just take a few shots?’ I wrote him an infuriated letter because I saw the film and I was hardly in it—he cut my part to shit."
Plummer even compared himself with Adrien Brody, then-poster boy for the Let Down By Malick brigade: "...it recalled the story of Adrien Brody, the lead in 'The Thin Red Line.' He went to the premiere, and he wasn’t in it!... I was awful to [Malick], but I did say I admired him. He’s an individual—also mad as a hatter." As much as he seem to soften a touch at the end, in 2012 at a Newsweek awards season roundtable, Plummer went even further, ranting (much to 'Thin Red Line' actor George Clooney's amusement, it seems): "I love some of his movies very much, but the problem with Terry is he needs a writer, desperately. He insists on overwriting until it sounds terribly pretentious… and he edits his films in such a way that he cuts everyone out of them... I was put in all sorts of different spots and suddenly my character was not in the scene that I thought I was in, in the editing room. It was very strange. It completely unbalances everything. And a very emotional scene that I had suddenly became background noise." Again he brings up the letter. “I gave him shit. I’ll never work with him again.” You can read more about the shooting of "The New World" in our comprehensive breakdown of the movie.

Actor: Sean Penn
Film: "The Tree of Life"
How Badly Was His Role Affected: Role reduced, and substantially changed from script stage.
Bitterness Level: 5/10 lemons

What Happened & How He Reacted: Sean Penn, one of the actors who survived the Great 'Thin Red Line' Cull, obviously had developed some sort of relationship with Malick on the set of that film. "It took me a little bit of time to adjust to it, it took me a couple of weeks and some heart to heart conversations with Terry about what contribution I could make because I had never been involved in something [so big]," he said about it, in the 2002 documentary “Rosy-Fingered Dawn." So his disappointment and befuddlement at his role's alterations in "The Tree of Life" may have been all the greater. As he said to Le Figaro: "I didn’t at all find on the screen the emotion of the script, which is the most magnificent one that I’ve ever read. A clearer and more conventional narrative would have helped the film without, in my opinion, lessening its beauty and its impact. Frankly, I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing there and what I was supposed to add in that context! What’s more, Terry himself never managed to explain it to me clearly."
That last bit especially seems damning, but in fact his next sentence in that Figaro interview, less frequently quoted, roughly translates as: "But this is a film that I would recommend, if you can go in without preconceived ideas. Everyone can find there a personal, emotional or spiritual connection. Those who do generally emerge very moved." So it seems he himself may be admitting that it's his preconceived ideas of what the film might have been that find him less than in love with the finished product.

Actor: Michael Sheen
Film: "To the Wonder"
How Badly Was His Role Affected: Excised completely
Bitterness Level: 1/10 lemons

What Happened & How He Reacted: Having let slip that he was excited to be working with Malick while on the press tour for Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" few further details emerged about Michael Sheen's role until after it was cut. But Sheen's involvement seemed casual enough from the beginning, "I played Ben [Affleck]'s boss, but that side of the film got cut down so much," he said in interview. "I just went to visit my girlfriend Rachel [McAdams] on the set, and then Terry asked if I would do a day's filming on it, so I was like, 'Yeah, sure.' It was just that I was around, and at the end of the day, you know, it was only two scenes." And, showing similar equanimity to fellow Brit Rachel Weisz, he said of hearing the news he was cut: "The producer sent me a nice email just saying, 'This is what's happening...' But it wasn''t like I had gone through the whole thing of auditioning for a Terry Malick film and then saying, 'Oh, I've got the part!' That's happened to me before -- I've done films where a lot of it gets cut and then it's kind of really disappointing."

Malick is of course already in production on two future films, and next up after "To the Wonder" will be "Knight of Cups." With Malick himself reportedly saying to Affleck that "Just more and more I'm more interested in silences," will we be back here, furiously updating this post prior to that film's release? Nah, we're sure the svelte, low-rent, minimal cast, which includes Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Teresa Palmer, Joel Kinnaman, Imogen Poots, Antonio Banderas, Isabel Lucas, Wes Bentley, Joe Manganiello, Nick Offerman, Freida Pinto, Nicky Whelan, Shea Whigham, Michael Wincott, Thomas Lennon, Ryan O'Neal and Katia Winter have nothing to worry about.

"The Newsroom" S2 premiering in July

Finally a summer 2013 cable premiere that isn't happening in May or June. HBO announced on Friday (April 12) that Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom" will premiere its second season on Sunday, July 14 at 10 p.m.

That moves "Newsroom" at least somewhat away from the onslaught of early-summer cable premieres that includes "True Blood,""Copper," [June 23] "The Killing,""Devious Maids,""Magic City," [June 14] "Dexter," [June 30] "Ray Donovan" and around a dozen dramas on USA and TNT. It will still air against many of those shows, but at least it won't have a conflicting premiere.

Of the premiere, HBO teases, "the staff of 'News Night' chases a mysterious tip, which leads to a story that ultimately spins out of control."

Created by Aaron Sorkin, "The Newroom" continues to star Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn and Dev Patel. It was nominated for multiple Golden Globes including Best Drama Series.

Oy, this show. The first season made me insane and yet I'll be watching S2 anyone. WTF @ my life/choices.

Ke$ha Brings The Glitter, Talks About Her Crazy, Beautiful Life On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Ke$ha on Jimmy Kimmel Live

We could ramble on about Ke$ha‘s chat with Jimmy Kimmel last night, but, really, all you need to see is this quote:“I’ve had glitter in all the unmentionables.” She tried to explain that she and her band compare stories on the tour bus about, um, their glitter-wrecked bits and pieces, but she and Kimmel decided it best they not go there on network television.

Naturally, the Dollar-Signed One also talked up her forthcoming MTV docu-series My Crazy Beautiful Life, which premieres on April 23 and apparently features lots of scenes of the “C’Mon” singer making out with dudes — despite the fact that it was her brother shooting the whole thing. Ke$ha apparently likes to keep everything in the family, though, as she later explained that her mom gets very excited when she gets to wear the giant penis suit on stage during concerts.

Kim Cattrall and Seth Numrich to Star in Sweet Bird of Youth at the Old Vic

Seth Numrich (recently seen in Golden Boy) and Kim Cattrall (of Sex and the City fame) will star in Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth at the Old Vic, reports The Daily Mail. Opening night is planned for June 12, with Marianne Elliott attached to direct.

The 1959 drama follows Chance Wayne (Numrich), a struggling actor who tries to make it big in Hollywood but discovers that his greatest talent is romancing older women with hefty bank accounts. Cattrall will play a faded movie star who falls for Chance.

The play premiered on Broadway in 1959 starring Paul Newman and Geraldine Page. It later made its West End premiere in London in 1985 in a production directed by Harold Pinter and starring Lauren Bacall and Michael Beck. The play was also made into a feature film in 1962 with much of the Broadway cast.

Numrich’s stage credits include Broadway productions of The Merchant of Venice in 2010 and War Horse in 2011. Five-time Emmy nominee Cattrall appeared on Broadway in Wild Honey and Private Lives; her screen credits include Sex and the City, Big Trouble in Little China, Police Academy, Mannequin and Porky’s.

WATCH: Johnny Depp & Kate Moss Inspire 'He Met Her' Music Video

Johnny Depp and Kate Moss have inspired a song. L.A. musical duo, He Met Her, has put out an EP called Love Heroes that's influenced by famous couples throughout history, and one of the tracks, "Toknight We Ride (Johnny & Kate)", is a dreamy tribute to the Pirates of the Caribbean star and the super model, who had a tempestuous four-year affair in the 1990s.

Although the former couple are only referenced in the title, the song's hedonistic lyrics include the line, "I'm on my Peter Pan, lost boys in NVR LAND," which, I hear is a reference to Depp's role as Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie in the 2004 movie, Lost in Neverland, though he was no longer with Moss at that point.

You can hear the song and see the lyrics in this subtitled video, which stars He Met Her's Mowgli Moon and Rocky Chance cavorting in Acapulco.

Clad in black yoga pants and an off-the-shoulder knit sweater, Jenner wrapped her legs around the pillow, designed to help expecting women sleep more comfortably.

She caught some rest behind large black frames while Kardashian, 32, snapped a photo.

maron

The upcoming IFC comedy series Maron looks to be one part of comedian Marc Maron's wildly popular WTF podcast, one part celebrity guest showcase, and one part fictionalization of his own neurotic take on life, success, dating, and friendships. Imagine an even more pessimestic Louie (which Maron has appeared on) combined with a live-action Ricky Gervais Show, if you can. At least, that's what we've gathered from the first trailer of the show, which kicks off its first ten-episode season on Friday, May 3 on IFC.

The minute-long clip wastes no time in showing who Maron got on board for his series. In addition to Judd Hirsch and Sally Kellerman playing his crazy parents, his famous friends like Adam Scott, Gina Gershon, Illeana Douglas, Denis Leary, Danny Trejo, Dave Foley, Mark Duplass, Audrey Plaza, Jeff Garlin, and Anthony Jeselnik are just a few of the familiar faces that pop up.

If Maron's sense of humor is already your particular cup of dry and witty tea, then Maron should be just your taste and it should tide you over until Portlandia brings back its own brand of smart snark to the network. Watch the star-filled video here:
