UTA Cancels Academy Awards Party to Protest Muslim Ban

Variety is currently reporting that United Talent Agency has decided to cancel their annual Academy Awards party this year. Instead they will be donating $250,000 to the ACLU and the International Rescue Committee. Additionally, they will be hosting a rally "to express the creative community’s growing concern with anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States" that will take place two days before the Academy Awards.

UTA represents Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi who has previously spoken out about why he will not be attending the Academy Awards despite his film The Salesman being nominated this year for Best Foreign Language Film.

In addition to their own donation UTA will be launching a CrowdRise campaign specifically targeting the entertainment community to help raise more funds for the ACLU.

Black Sails - Luke Arnold should head Starz' PR department + interview round-up

0

Tweets by recent piece of driftwood Luke Arnold, telling us why everyone should watch Black Sails right now:
Talking to Inverse, Toby Stephens discusses Flint's evolution throughout the seasons and has some interesting stuff to say about the end of his character's journey.

Highlights:

  • For his part, Stephens thinks it comes down to sharing the burden of his position. "He finds a kindred spirit in Silver. It's finding this balance between somebody who's driven by pragmatism but also has this dark side - this anger that's feeding it, these motivations that are emotional. Flint projects this on him. Because I don’t think Silver can ever live up to that. I don’t think anybody can live up to these things that Flint demands of them. It’s how that resolves itself which is where Season 4 really kind of comes into its own.”
Stephens maintains, however, that this way Flint projects onto Silver is subconscious. “I don’t think he is aware of it — or if he is, it’s something that he kind of pushes into the background. I think he needs Silver. But how much does Silver need Flint? That’s the question.”

  • Stephens himself didn’t know what Flint’s ultimate ending would be until two weeks before he got the final script. “I think Jon and Robert found such a brilliant ending for Flint,” he says. “I had a vague idea of where the season was going, but I didn’t know until about two weeks before. In a way, it was much more realistic not knowing. I remember doing a play once which was a tragedy, and the director gave this note to the actors saying, “You don’t know that this ends badly. Your character isn’t seeing it as a tragedy. You just think this is another day.”

In this interview Toby Stephens remains relatable, is asked about how he balances his career and having three kids.

This interview is from before S4 started, but Luke and Hannah remain adorable, so I included it. They explain the scale of S4 and how an overarching theme is not plain vengeance, but grief and how all characters have to deal with their unique losses.

And last but not least, this interview with the cast and showrunners goes nicely in-depth. Topics include disability & LGBT representation, Clara Paget's muscles and references to The Wire.

Highlight:It’s about a woman realizing she isn’t who she thought she was, and season three is about finding a measure of comfort in that. I think season four for her was about figuring out if it was going to work with the person she thinks it’s going to work with.

Rihanna covers Harper's Bazaar & pays homage to Amelia Earhart

Rihanna on Amelia Earhart: "There's something so special about a woman who dominates in a man's world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and the nerve to never take no for an answer. Amelia Earhart was such a dynamic force in her industry, setting multiple aviation records in her time. So it was a no-brainer for me to team up with Harper's Bazaar in honor of a woman who held her own with the big boys."

Migos not cool with people supporting iLoveMakonnen's coming out as gay

Last month iLoveMakonnen publicly came out as gay. In a recent interview, after Quavo says he loves Atlanta’s “diversity,” the interviewer said he mentioned Makonnen’s coming out, which led to “an awkward interlude.” Quavo then shouted, “Damn, Makonnen!”

"And so I’m surprised by Migos’ reaction when I mention iLoveMakonnen, the local MC who just came out as gay on Twitter. “Damn, Makonnen!” Quavo bellows after an awkward interlude. I mention support I saw online for Makonnen’s decision. “They supported him?” Quavo asks, raising an eyebrow. “That’s because the world is fucked up,” says Offset. “This world is not right,” Takeoff says. “We ain’t saying it’s nothing wrong with the gays,” says Quavo. But he suggests that Makonnen’s sexuality undermines his credibility, given the fact that “he first came out talking about trapping and selling Molly, doing all that.”He frowns. “That’s wack, bro.”"

Taemin – “Press Your Number” / Bruno Mars – “Press It”

When SM Entertainment first revealed that Bruno Mars would serve as one of the producers for Taemin’s then upcoming solo album, it didn’t take long for fans to locate the original Bruno Mars track “Press It” soon after.

With the help of producing team Stereotypes, Bruno Mars’ sultry “Press It” later transformed into Taemin’s energetic title track, “Press Your Number.”

f(x) – “No More” / Ariana Grande – “Boyfriend Material”

American power vocalist Ariana Grande recorded the song “Boyfriend Material” as a track for her 2013 debut album “Yours Truly.” However, the song ultimately didn’t make the album’s final tracklist. Grande later shared the track with fans as a special thank you in 2014.

By that time, the song already found its way onto f(x)’s 2013 album “Pink Tape” in the form of “No More.” The two songs may share the same melody, but the lyrics are complete opposites. Grande’s “Boyfriend Material” is a love song about finally finding the perfect boyfriend, while f(x)’s “No More” sings of a “fox-like” friend who changes her personality with each new boyfriend.

Girls’ Generation – “Dancing Queen” / Duffy – “Mercy”

Welsh artist Duffy’s “Mercy” topped charts worldwide upon its release in 2008. By the upcoming year, Duffy earned multiple award nominations for the single and a Grammy for her album “Rockferry.”

Girls’ Generation recorded their own version of the song in 2008 as well, titled “Dancing Queen,” but didn’t release the song officially until 2012 — ahead of their “I Got A Boy” album release.

BIGBANG – “This Love” / Maroon 5 – “This Love”

Proving that music knows no language or borders, American band Maroon 5’s smash hit “This Love” was more than just a hit in the states. The song charted high in over a dozen countries around the world, and went on to earn the band a Grammy in 2006.

In 2008, BIGBANG put their spin on the iconic song in the form of a G-Dragon solo.

Girls’ Generation – “Run Devil Run” / Ke$ha – “Run Devil Run"

Music has a way of uniting even the most unlikely of artists together, and no example exhibits this more than Ke$ha’s original demos spawning hits for Girls’ Generation across the world. Notably, Ke$ha’s demo for “Run Devil Run.”

…which, as we all know, became yet another hit for Girls’ Generation.

Robin Thicke Shut Down in Child Visitation Battle

0
0

Robin Thicke lost three times on Wednesday in his court battle over visitation rights with his 6-year-old son Julian. He is currently only allowed to see Julian for a few hours three days a week and only with a court-appointed monitor present. He was accused of abusing Julian recently by the boy's mother, Paula Patton, who currently has a restraining order against Robin.

Robin was angry that the monitor had refused to allow a visit recently after determining that Julian did not want to go with his father, and had cut another visit short.

* He first asked for more visitation time with Julian. The judge said no.

* He then asked to be allowed to visit with Julian without the court-appointed monitor present. The judge said no.

* Finally, he asked for a different and "more impartial" monitor to be appointed and for the monitor to be forbidden from cutting his visits short or canceling them. The judge said no.
