There has yet to be another Awkward Black Girl since the watershed web series wrapped in early 2013, but - in 2015 - the web is flooded with new short-form series starring strong, flawed and unapologetic black women. While network television has its Olivias and Mary Janes, the Internet boasts a more appealing palette of black women. From typecast actresses to interracial dating to being black and broke in the city, web series have it covered in 2015. For Harriet has been the go-to guide in what to watch when it comes to POC and WOC in web series. Featured is a compilation of their more recent recommendations and their addictive first episodes.

Black Actress is the first web series to explore the struggles that black actresses face in a darkly humorous and honest way; from type casting to competitiveness to the limited roles. Our girl Hazel from Degrassi: TND, Andrea Lewis, acts as creator and producer of the show, as well as playing lead character Kori Bailey. In an interesting twists, episodes are bookended with docu-style vignettes with familiar Black actresses, such as Essence Atkins and Reagan Gomez (who famously produced her own web series last year Almost Home).
    Network/Cable Series Equivalent: 50% UnReal, 50% Girls
Why For Harriet says you should watch: The caliber of WOC in the industry attached. Women like Tatyana Ali and Essence Atkins going in-depth on the nature of the industry and Andrea Lewis is "a pleasure to watch."

This light and instantly lovable anti-rom-com series features two black women navigating the scary, scary world of app dating. The real secret weapon here is powerhouse writer/producer Lena Waithe, hot off of her last web series Twenties. Hello Cupid follows two best friends, Whitney and Robin, and their mishaps in online dating.
Network/Cable Series Equivalent: Sex And The City
Why For Harriet says you should watch: It's all about Lena. She is masterfully creating "believable, interesting characters and dialogue". As one of the leading black storytellers on the bubble of success, her latest is true-to-life and impeccably produced. Like Twenties, it's another series worthy of a full-length primetime or cable reimagining.

Drty Diana is the dark comedy taking on black millennial angst. Cassi Maddox stars as the flawed and complicated Nyaomi, a mid-twenties alternative chick trying to get her life together. The overall synopsis is steeped in mystery but the titular character is real and black womanhood has never looked this rebellious.
Network/Cable Series Equivalent: Being Mary Jane
Why For Harriet says you should watch: Maddox’s portrayal of Nyaomi/Diana. She's deadpan, brooding to a fault, and consistently problematic. She even opens the first episode narrating "It’s not that I want to kill myself, because I don’t. But if something were to happen to me, I wouldn’t be sad about it, you know?'"

Ackee & Saltfish is inspired by a short film of the same name. The series follows quirky besties Olivia and Rachel as they... actually don’t really do all that much. But yet the chemistry is infectious and the humor is bingeworthy. The dialogue is snappy and Emeke’s witticisms feel so fresh, it's hard to find anything else on the web (or on television) like Ackee & Saltfish.
Network/Cable Series Equivalent: Literally like nothing else on TV. Just watch!
Why For Harriet says you should watch: Emeke’s dialogue, without a doubt. It's refreshing and offbeat,  but also comfortingly familiar. Plus their British background adds a fun "flavour" rarely seen in minority-led web series.

The Peculiar Kind is a gritty experimental and docu-style series that looks into the lives and experiences of queer women of color with candid and unscripted conversations. LGBTQ or not, every woman in this series is smart as hell and flawlessly beautiful in her own way. There's something here for everyone.
Network/Cable Series Equivalent: The Real L Word
Why you should watch: The series boasts an impressive guest cast, including an appearance from Odd Future’s Syd Tha Kyd, "one of the most prominent Black lesbians in music today". Beyond the series, the brand is also expanded with extra episodes and a documentary as well.

When it comes to web series, what are your faves ONTD?

  • -During an interview Chris said he'd be open to working with Zayn because he's his "homeboy" and they're on the same label
-Chris also said he'd want to collab with Zayn because he has a huge fanbase and fans are waiting to hear his music
-Chris also made note that he's not very selective about who he works with because he's on everyone's songs.
-Zayn has yet to comment, though he has shown appreciation for Chris' music in the past. His fans are also very eager for the collaboration to happen.

I think this collab is def going to happen, like Chris said he isn't too selective and it'd be the easiest way to get him some cred.

Publishing company Last Gasp started a pledge on kickstarter to raise $36,000 to print and distribute about 4000 hardcover copies of the manga "Barefoot Gen" to schools and libraries for educational purposes. "Barefoot Gen" is a manga series by author Keiji Nakazawa (1939-2012) and details semi-autobiographical accounts of his experiences as a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The manga has spun several adaptations, including two anime features, live action films and TV series, and books. (There is also interest in Hollywood to make a film based on it).

    From the kickstarter campaign:

August 6, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Today, the danger posed by nuclear weapons is as great as ever, yet few people survive who witnessed their horror.

Keiji Nakazawa's manga illustrates the true impact of nuclear weapons when used against a civilian population. It is vital reading for people of all ages, and especially for today's youth.

By keeping this tragedy in our collective consciousness, we can strive to never repeat it and guide humanity towards a course of peace.

With your support we hope to share the message of Gen with tomorrow's leaders.

Today also marks the second atom bomb drop by the US on Nagasaki 70 years ago.

tl:dr;Terry Balsamo co-writer, guitarist has left the band and Jen Majura has taken his place. She will be a co-writer, guitarist and an additional singer for Evanescence.

We have big news to share.

After 2 albums, countless adventures around the world and on the stage, Terry's time with Evanescence has come to an end. As difficult as that is, we stand unified knowing it's the right thing for all of us. We will ALWAYS love you, Terry, and wish you all the happiness, health, and love in the world!

Now for the exciting part of this announcement: Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jen Majura.

After scouring the globe, I found Evanescence's missing piece in South Germany. She plays like a supervillan, sings like an angel, and laughs like a great friend. We spent a few days together last week in New York sharing eerily familiar life stories, sushi, artistic inspiration, other people's shoes, and SO many laughs! (Yeah, okay, and maybe there were a couple of stiff drinks mixed in there).

We are all so excited to play together this fall and bring the show to a whole new level. CAN'T WAIT! I know you will show her all the love and respect a strong, talented woman deserves. I couldn't be happier to welcome our new sister to the band.

P.S. This is the time to be shouting out setlist requests, we're working on it now Anything is possible! So bring it!!!

Hey, it's me! Your [as of lately] daily bringer of Floptastic Flop news! Let's get right to it!

Fantastic Four (2015) was originally tracking a $40-50 million opening weekend. I told you yesterday that it was official that Fantastic Four was flopping and was struggling to make it to $30 million. just444 later commented that it was on track for a $28 million opening weekend.

Sorry, Fox! It looks like Fantastic Four will only make $26.2 million during its opening weekend. How tragic is that? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the one that came out in 1990, made $25,398,367 during its opening weekend. Blade II opened with $32,528,016.

It also did not take the #1 spot at the box office. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation is #1 during its second week with $29.4 million.

    - Only made $11 million on Friday, that includes $2.7 million from Thursday showings.
    - Dropped 25% on Saturday.
    - Has a C- Cinemascore.
    - Massive second week drop expected.
    - Only expected to make $60-65 million domestically. Its budget was $120 million (no clue if that includes advertising). It could potentially make less than Chronicle's $64.5 million domestic total and that had a budget of $12 million.
    - Only made $34.1 million overseas for a $60 million worldwide debut.
    - Would be lucky to reach $200 million worldwide. Fantastic Four (2005) made $330,579,719 Worldwide and Rise of the Silver Surfer made $289,047,763.

Also in June, an unidentified insider "close to the situation" revealed that the older Fantastic Four movies were removed from Amazon and iTunes so they wouldn't distract the promotion of the reboot. Looks like that didn't help!

So far, none of the people associated with this movie or even the studio has commented on Fantastic Four since it debuted. Trank admitted it was a flop before Thursday showings. Producer Simon Kinberg said it was not a disaster on August 3rd. He also said on Thursday (before showings) that Fantastic Four and X-Men would have nothing to do with each other because parallel universes. 20th Century Fox is expected to say something Monday, when studios usually provide "official" numbers.

Here's a juicy rumor for you to end this post. It is not confirmed at all. Fox is supposedly going to postpone the Fantastic Four sequel and release Deadpool 2 on its June 9, 2017 date.

Taylor's "T.S. 1989" merch is a little controversial in china due to the unintended reference to the 1989 massacre at Tiananmen square (something the Chinese government censors references to and basically tries to minimize or cover up). Taylor may be removing this merchandise from China to fall in line with government censorship. I guess she will only stand up to billionaires if it's profitable.

ontd, has your fave ever redesigned merch due to censorship?
