He’s on the verge of Oscar glory thanks to his starring role in American Hustle.
But as Christian Bale prepares for one of the biggest nights of an already distinguished acting career, his mother admits she hasn’t spoken to her son since they fell out on the eve of another memorable moment for the actor – more than six-years ago.
Bale was at the heart of an unexplained rift with Jenny and his sister Sharon while preparing for the London premiere of The Dark Knight in 2008 – with the star arrested on suspicion of assault.
Jenny, now 66, says she still has ‘no idea’ what caused the fracas, but hopes she can heal the rift with her son ahead of his landmark 40th birthday on January 30.
She told Deborah Sherwood of the Sunday Mirror: ‘Six years is long enough. I want him back. It’s so sad we have not spoken in all this time. It’s sad for me. It’s sad for him too.
‘His grandmother Edna is now 90 and she wants contact with him – and it’s his 40th coming up. Now would be a wonderful time to get back together so we could be a family again.’
Following their fall-out at London’s Dorchester Hotel, Jenny says she’s only been able to see her son in the same capacity as his fans – on screen.
She added: ‘I’ll be flicking through the channels and suddenly there he is, looking at me from the TV. I think, ‘Oh, God’ and carry on watching.’
Jenny has even set up Google Alerts for any snippet of news related to Bale, his wife Sandra ‘Sibi’ Blazic and their eight-year old daughter Emmeline.
Recalling the night her son was arrested, Jenny – who works as a receptionist at a doctor’s surgery – says she has no idea what caused the argument, but admits he may have misinterpreted a suggestion from sister.
She said: ‘It was just something he didn’t take up. That was all fine. It wasn’t for Sharon, it was for the people she worked with. But I think he thought it was asking for money. That’s all I can put it down to.’
