New Zealand teen Lorde is a Grammy frontrunner for Record of the Year with "Royals," an anti-bling anthem eschewing the trappings of fame and fortune. But ironically, now that Lorde has become such a breakout star, she's getting a chance to enjoy the finer things in life.
Speaking to Yahoo Music at Delta Airlines' private pre-Grammy party at West Hollywood's Soho House, the 17-year-old wunderkind admitted that her life has changed — but not as much as you'd think. When asked what rock-royalty luxuries she's enjoying most lately, she didn't espouse the joys of jet planes, islands, or tigers on gold leashes, but something much simpler.
"I feel like I catch public transportation slightly less than I did," she said, "just because I'm on a strict time limit, which is nice. But I still do it quite a lot!" So Lorde may still count her dollars on the train to a Grammy party or two this week.
Interestingly, along with "Royals," one of the other top hits of the past year was another song celebrating a penny-pinching lifestyle: "Thrift Shop," by fellow multiple Grammy nominees Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. "I think maybe people gravitated towards those songs because maybe that's what people wanted to hear and found refreshing," Lorde mused. "It was a crazy thing; it did feel like those two songs were kind of kin to each other."
Lorde declined to dish about what she plans to wear to the Grammys Sunday night (or how she plans to style her hair, arguably the best head of hair in music today), but she performed Thursday at the Soho House in a dramatic Acne column dress and Stella McCartney platform boots — an outfit fit for a queen bee, indeed — for a crowd that included Hilary Duff, Julianne Hough, Anna Kendrick, Lance Bass, and "X Factor" winners Alex & Sierra.
