Britney Spears kicks off her Planet Hollywood residency December 27, and a teeming brigade of …Baby One More Time nostalgianates finally have their day. But that’s not what this article is about.
According to SquidHat Records’ Allan Carter, punk rock Britney Spears tribute band Hit Me Baby, the only punk rock Britney Spears tribute band in the world, plans to celebrate the kickoff by releasing a 13-track digital cover album under the SquidHat banner. As it turns out, HMB is actually the cover project of Attack Ships on Fire, SquidHat CEO Allan Carter’s punk project from Portland.
We received an advance copy and let me tell you, it’s one for the books. “(Hit Me) Baby One More Time,” for example, was approached with the same mercilessness Metallica approached the ‘80s.
It isn’t just one period of the Spears legacy, either. You get the carefree “Oops!” years, for sure, but you really get taken on a journey through her self-seeking “Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” phase, and driving it home by letting you contemplate the hyper-sexual “Toxic” age. It really puts the late 20th century under a microscope.
But more appreciated than that is the attention to detail. These songs are done the way a joke album should be done: as accurately as possible. This is our new favorite punk rock Britney Spears cover band.
SquidHat Records is proud to announce the release of Hit Me Baby, a 13 song digital-only album featuring nine previously unreleased studio tracks and four songs recorded live during their historic 2011 Men Fatale tour. Coinciding with the actual Britney Spears’ residency at Planet Hollywood, the CD will be released as a $3.99 digital download from the SquidHat Records web store on December 27, 2013.
“She keeps coming back … so they do to.” said Allan Carter, President and founder of SquidHat Records. “We want to preserve their place in history and make the ear humping Britney punk deliciousness of Hit Me Baby an enduring part of the punk lexicon.”
The songs you know and love are here … from gold standards such as “Toxic”, “Oops! … I Did It Again” and “Baby One More Time” to new sure-fire classics like “Hold It Against Me”, “Gimme More” and “Radar.” From the first pulse-pounding strains of “If You Seek Amy,” to the heart-wrenching, dulcet tones of the acoustically reimagined “Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman” you will relive the defining moments of your youth … even the scary, curled up in the shower crying ones.
Tongues planted firmly in cheek and in counter-contrast with their masculine image – Hit Me Baby’s style is bold and sassy, with in-your-face beats that make a mosh pit rumble and beckon a dance floor to its knees. The sound is loud, dirty and irresistible, and has won them respect from the mostserious music lovers – pop and punk alike – around the world. They rocked Vegas, Portland, and all points in between, and were a staple of the Double Down Saloon calendar.
