It's been a little over a year since the "Twilight" saga said goodbye with the final chapter, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Pt. 2." In the 12 months since Hollywood just hasn't been the same. Studios have tried to recreate the screaming tween magic with numerous faux franchises such as "The Host" and "Mortal Instruments," but moviegoers just won't have it. Sure, there's "Hunger Games" and potential future players like "Divergent" and "The Maze Runner," but where is our pop culture phenomenon to fill the "Twilight" void?
Sad, no?
In the meantime, the "stars" the Summit Entertainment series launched have been stretching their legs and venturing in new directions. Some more successfully than others. Actually, some much more successfully than others. With that in mind, let's review the winners and losers of the "Twilight" cast…one year later. You might be surprised who's on their way up and who's on their way down.
LOSER: Taylor Lautner
Best known for: "Twilight" saga
Twilight Character: Jacob Black
Non-Twilight highlight: Hosting "Saturday Night Live"
Why: Lautner's non-"Twilight" career has been bumpy to say the least. He starred in the thriller "Abduction" that was stupidly rushed into production before it was ready. Even with bad reviews, the tepid box office proved Lautner was not ready to top line a movie on his own. That was one reason the reboot of "Stretch Armstrong" he was attached to fell apart so quickly (also, no one wants to see that movie anyway). Lautner was also supposed to make a movie with Gus Van Sant, but that still hasn't gone before cameras. What's next? An independently produced thriller without distribution where Lautner plays a bike messenger who jumps into the world of…parkour. Yikes.
WINNER: Anna Kendrick
Best known for: "Pitch Perfect"
Twilight Character: Jessica Stanley
Non-Twilight highlight: "Up in the Air"
Why: It was apparent from the first film that supporting player Kendrick was destined for greater things than cracking wise in the cafeteria while Bella made eyes at Edward. She started appearing in high-profile films such as "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and "50/50" while still punching the clock at her increasingly unsatisfying "Twilight" gig. Kendrick even scored an Oscar nomination opposite George Clooney in "Up in the Air," and sang her way to box office success and the Billboard Hot 100 with "Pitch Perfect." She'll soon be seen as Cinderella in "Into the Woods," alongside Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep.
WINNER: Kellan Lutz
Best known for: "Twilight" saga
Twilight Character: Emmett Cullen
Non-Twilight highlight: "Immortals"
Why: Lutz may end up the luckiest and unlikely start of the bunch. Yes, he's got a bunch of bad B movies on his resume but Hollywood still sees him as a potential long term action star (it doesn't hurt the pickings are slim). He'll be seen next in the "first" "Hercules" movie of 2014, "Hercules: The Legend Begins," and then return in August alongside Sly Stallone, Jason Statham and Wesley Snipes in "The Expendables 3." If things go his way, in a decade he'll be remembered more as a kick-ass action star than a member of the Cullen clan.
LOSER: Ashley Greene
Best known for: "Twilight"
"Twilight" Character: Alice Cullen
Non-"Twilight" highlight: Uh..."Butter"?
Why: As one of the highest-profile supporting players in the franchise, Greene's post-"Twilight" prospects looked bright - and then she starred in a string of forgettable films including supernatural snoozefest "The Apparition," Sundance non-starter "Skateland" and the ostensibly straight-to-DVD Miley Cyrus vehicle "LOL." Her future slate doesn't look much better, and indeed, her post-"Twilight" career has become more notable for her red carpet and magazine cover appearances than for anything she's done on-screen.
LOSER: Nikki Reed
Best known for: "Twilight"
"Twilight" character: Rosalie Hale
Non-"Twilight" highlight: "Thirteen"
Why: Reed showed some promise as the star and co-writer of Catherine Hardwicke's 2003 drama "Thirteen" (a film based on Reed's actual experiences growing up in Los Angeles), a gig that led directly into the Hardwicke-directed first "Twilight" installment. Unfortunately, her non-Hardwicke/"Twilight" projects have been more or less a bust, with such little-seen films as the critically-panned 2009 horror flick "Chain Letter," the 2010 Bruce Willis-Malin Akerman vehicle "Catch .44" and the Dwayne Johnson-Liam Hemsworth actioner "Empire State" cluttering up her resume. Unless she can make a big turnaround in the next couple of years, this may well be the end of the direct-to-DVD line for the actress.
JURY STILL OUT: Jamie Campbell Bower
Best known for: "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones"
Twilight Character: Caius
Non-Twilight highlight: "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"
Why: Bower had a career before appearing in "New Moon," but it's been bumpy ever since. Following "Breaking Dawn" Screen Gems made him the leading man in their expected franchise "Mortal Instruments" only to see the inaugural installment, "City of Bones," bomb at the box office. Bower has an under the radar thriller, "Overdrive," on his upcoming slate, but it's unclear it will ever see the light of day in theaters. Oh, and he reportedly made the dumb mistake of turning down the role of Enjolras in Tom Hooper's Oscar nominated hit musical "Les Miserables."
Pattinson, Stewart, Facinelli, Reaser, Sheen, Fanning, Rathbone, Lefevre, Burke at the source.
