While Nicole Kidman quit the controversial film "The Nymphomaniac" on Friday, "Transformers" star Shia LaBeouf is ready to push on - and in - doing whatever it takes for the film, and making sacrifices if necessary.
Most men would call it a sacrifice with air quotes around the word, but live sex in the upcoming film "The Nymphomaniac" could mean Shia LaBeouf could make an actual sacrifice - possibly sacrificing his relationship with up-and-coming designer Karolyn Pho.
In mid-August, the couple was seen during a full-on blow-out melt-down. There was no public statement over the row, but it was assumed and reported that it was over Karolyn's objection to Shia LaBeouf participating in live sex for the film.
Later, though, it was reported that the producers said that all sex scenes would be filmed with body doubles and visual effects. It's unclear if that will truly be the case; LaBeouf earlier said that the scripts all carried a disclaimer on them saying that the sex was real. He added,
Anything that is "illegal" will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening. It’s going to be a wild movie, man. It’s going to be a wild movie.
LaBeouf is desperate to work with director Lars von Trier. A source close to the couple said:
Working with Lars has opened his eyes to a new way of working and he loves the director’s artistic integrity. Each scene feels very real and Shia believes it’s only improving his acting talents. Karolyn (his girlfriend) gets that Shia likes to go method and appreciates his artistic integrity. However, she thinks performing a real sex scene in a movie is going too far. She wants him to do the film, because Shia was desperate to work with Lars – he’s such a hero of his. And she doesn’t mind if he strips off completely – she had no qualms about the Sigur Ros music video. It’s difficult for her to understand why it (the sex) can’t be simulated – just like in other films.
While no public statement about the reasons that Kidman left the film, it's believed the live sex scenes had something to do with.
Meanwhile, although the film has lost an Oscar winner (Kidman), it's scored an Oscar nominee. Uma Thurman was recently signed to the film.
Nicole Kidman has stepped into the shoes of writers Martha Gellhorn (Hemingway & Gellhorn), Virginia Woolf (The Hours) and photographer Diane Arbus (Fur) for previous roles, but if the latest pictures from the set of the upcoming biopic Grace of Monaco are any indication, her role as actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly might be her best historical figure transformation yet.
Earlier pictures from the set showed Kidman in vintage day wear and a chic gold gown, giving some indication of how costume designer Gigi Lepage would help morph her into the glamorous icon. But when the actress stepped on the Monte Carlo set October 30 to film scenes with Tim Roth, who plays her on-screen husband Prince Rainier III, there was no denying she looked every bit a princess. Kidman stunned in an embellished strapless bodice with a full tulle skirt and satin shawl. Her hair was swept into Kelly’s trademark bouffant, she dripped in diamonds and even showed off satin opera gloves while nailing a regal wave to photographers.
The film, helmed by director Olivier Dahn, will follow the story of the late Philadelphia-born star’s involvement with Monaco’s Prince Rainier III. With a reported $30 million budget for the project, that’s scheduled for release in 2014, we can only imagine what other alluring looks are in store to capture Kelly’s timeless style that continues to inspire designers. Is this fairytale reminiscent look a step in the right direction?
