Performing in front of thousands of fans takes both confidence and style—a combination in the musical word that has bred some of the most sartorially savvy singers around. From Charlotte Gainsbourg to Lady GaGa, these fearless showstoppers demonstrate a shared sense of female empowerment, enviable individual style, and unquestionable muse-worthiness.

CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG

Charlotte Gainsbourg was born with a pedigree for impeccable style: her mother, English singer-actress Jane Birkin, is one of themost referenced style icons of all time (not to mention the inspiration for Hermès’s iconic “Birkinbag); her father, Serge Gainsbourg, is probably the most notorious French pop singer of all time. It’s no wonder, then, that daughter Charlotte projects a captivating, effortless sophistication that is all her own. When not dressed in Balmain’s embellished, rocker-chic pieces, the International Best-Dressed List alum favors androgynous separates, minimal makeup, and eye-catching shoes.

BEYONCE

Anyone whose alter ego goes by the name of “Sasha Fierce” should know how to rock a daring ensemble. A self-proclaimed feminist, Beyoncé celebrates her “grown woman”-hood in provocative form-fitting pieces that accentuate her well-toned body. Still, this year’s International Best-Dressed List honoree maintains an air of sophisticated elegance that often eludes many of her more exhibitionistic counterparts. Most recently, the glamorous singer caused a stir by chopping off her famous long hair into a rebellious chop.

LANA DEL REY

A self-described “gangsta Nancy Sinatra,” Lana Del Rey gained overnight fame with the viral success of her self-made video for her debut single, “Video Games.” Del Rey, née Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, mixes the style of 1960s Americana, Old Hollywood glamour, and old-school hip hop. The singer’s outfits are accentuated by her Veronica Lake hairdo, winged-out eyeliner, and gangster-inspired nails and accessories. While this mixture of ostensibly disparate styles would seem a recipe for fashion disaster, the muse for classic British fashion label Mulberry, and H&M, pulls it off with hypnotic charm and panache.

ADELE

“This year, the airwaves belong to Adele,” we announced in 2012, when the British singer was included in our annual New Establishment List. By 2012, her second album, 21, had won six Grammys and sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. Already a fashion tour de force and Vogue favorite, the vocal phenomenon’s go-to style includes retro cat-eyes, a beehive hairdo, and simple, figure-flattering dresses often custom-designed by Burberry. For the most recent Grammy Awards ceremony, however, the singer wore a cheerful red-floral Valentino frock. Brava!

FLORENCE WELCH

The powerhouse lead of British indie band Florence + The Machine, Florence Welch’s larger than life persona made her an instant fashion darling upon the release of her 2009 debut album. With a penchant for dramatic, folksy dresses, paired with her flame-red hair and ivory skin, the Hot Tracks artist has been named the “perfect Gucci girl” by Frida Giannini and has become the muse to multiple fashion houses including Valentino, Chanel, and Mulberry. The singer wears flowing goddess gowns, platform heels, and loud vintage finds.
