World's weirdest super group? Johnny Depp, Ed Sheeran and One Direction's Zayn Malik head to studio

Beware - there may be a new music super group on its way.

In a move that will no doubt excite One Direction and Ed Sheeran fans (and terrify Johnny Depp fans) there was an unusual musical meeting at a recording studio in Los Angeles, California on Monday.

British singer Ed and Johnny were seen arriving at the studio and looking ready to rock.

Then if the pairing of the pirate and soulful red head was not enough, a Instagram picture from inside the recording complex revealed 1D's Zayn Malik was also in house to show off his musical chops.

The mysterious meeting of the cult actor with British pop's biggest stars already has fans in a spin.

While an actor may seem an unlikely choice for either One Direction or 22-year-old to collaborate with the Pirates Of The Caribbean star is no stranger to rock and roll.

While most know Johnny for his quirky roles, the 50-year-old started out with dreams of being a musician and even had a band in the 1990s called P - they released one album before breaking up.

However, the Dark Shadows star is quite the guitarist having played alongside Alice Cooper, on stage in front of thousands with Areosmith and recording with Eric Clapton.

Whether the two teen heartthrobs actually recorded with the star is not yet known.

However, on Monday Ed took to Twitter to talk about his excitement at playing with a favourite, but unnamed, artist.

The singer tweeted while recording with UK dance group Rudimental: 'Finished the @RudimentalUk session for today, back in tomorrow. Now off to make music with one of my favourite artists...'

The singer may have been referring to another unusual collaboration though, as later on Monday the Lego House songwriter also recorded a track with rapper The Game.

The Game confirming the partnership: 'Just made a CLASSIC record with the homie Ed Sheeran ... One of the dopest.'

Even if they did not record together, it was a busy day in the studio as inexplicably with Zayn also stopped by.

Las Vegas musician Alexander DeLeon, from band The Cab, snapped a picture of himself with the One Direction star and Johnny.

Posting the image on Instagram DeLeon said: 'Pirate lessons from the one and only. Thanks for having us, Mr. Depp.'

Johnny certainly looked every inch the rocker as he headed into the studio, wearing a maroon and white striped shirt with its sleeves rolled up, a pair of distressed blue flared jeans, cheese cutter cap and a bandanna tucked into his back pocket.

Ed meanwhile did not spend much time on his outfit - wearing a white T-shirt, dark jeans and high top sneakers.

Instead he focused his time stocking up in supplies as he was seen grabbing not one, but three packs of cigarettes out of his car - clearly expecting a long studio day.

Following Ed's lead 20-year-old Zayn also donned a white T-shirt, adding tight blue jeans and a red cap.

LOL wut. Zayn must have been fangirling. Remember when..
