When New Zealand indie outfit The Naked and Famous embark on their first U.S. tour in nearly two years this fall, they’ll do so in support of their sophomore album. The follow-up to the band’s 2010 debut Passive Me, Aggressive You, In Rolling Waves is due out September 17th via Republic Records. The 12-track LP was produced by Powers and Short and Justin Meldal-Johnsen (M83, Beck, Nine Inch Nails) and recorded at a rented home in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles.
The lead single, “Hearts Like Ours”, debuted earlier today on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show. While the band maintains an emphasis on massive hooks and glossy production, they demonstrate a new side of their dramatic indie-pop. The battle between shimmery synth and sweltering guitars against twee harmonies and equally saccharine declarations of love creates something more earnest, a breath of imperfection and reality amid their carefully-structured romantic yearnings.
