Jonas Brothers talk Bieber, fans, and return to spotlight

Sometimes you've just got to shave your head.

So says Joe Jonas, one-third of the hysteria-inducing sibling pop trio Jonas Brothers, who caused a bit of an online ruckus last month when he posted video of his bold follicle adventure.

"It's something that I wanted to do for the longest time actually," said the head-shaved and bearded Joe, 23, seated beside younger brother Nick, 20 and older brother Kevin, 25, in a Canadian newspaper exclusive backstage on Thursday night.

"Nick did it (the results of which you can see in the video for their first new single Pom Poms). I got pretty jealous to be honest. So I waited for the opportunity once he started his hair back out."

Added Nick: "I don't think we can do three shaved heads."

"I'm next on the docket," joked Kevin, the only married Jo Bro, who is expecting his first child with wife Danielle after New Years 2014.

In addition to touring again, the Jo Bros have released two new singles, the high school band-and-cheerleader-influenced Pom Poms and the more thoughtful mid-tempo ballad, First Time, from their forthcoming fifth album, the appropriately named V, due this fall.

"I think both these songs do set the stage for the rest of the record," said Nick, who produced the album. "Specifically, the First Time was one, from the minute it was created, we felt was a good template for us because it combines both the old and the new... That one specifically was kind of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere meets Calvin Harris (with) a modern twist to it."

With a four-year break that saw Joe do a solo album, Nick appear on Broadway, and Kevin and his wife do a reality TV show, did the trio think their faithful female following would still be around?

"It's only natural (to have that fear)," said Nick. "But there was even a fear while (our popularity) was at its height. I feel like, you wake up one day and it's all going to disappear."

Certainly, the Jonas Brothers seem to be part of a trend of former Disney stars -- Miley Cryus and Selena Gomez among them -- releasing transition albums this year.

Of the three acts, Cyrus has made the most drastic changes to her look -- chopping off all her hair and dying it blonde -- and sound, and her former boyfriend Nick approves.

"She's incredibly talented," said Nick. "She's always going to have success and it's great to see her have success now."

On the other hand, Joe is not so sure about beleaguered Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, after referencing "peeing in buckets" during the group's MuchMusic appearance on Wednesday night.

"I don't want to say too much because then it becomes a war you don't want to have," he said to QMI Agency. "But personally, I think, he's being a kid. And I think it's unfortunate that he lives in a day and age where everything you do is watched. I acted stupid at times too when I was his age, and I got away with a lot more than what people probably know about."

Ultimately, Joe said he's 50-50 on the sympathy front for what the Biebs is going through right now.

"I think sometimes, not all the time. There's certain things that are unforgivable. I think it's about the people that surround you more than anything."

The band also sat down with ET Canada to talk about their new album and what type of dad Kevin will be:

The band was featured on E News last night as part of a series looking at this summer's music tours. Ken Baker spent the day with the guys at their opening night show in Chicago and found out how they feel about returning to touring after three years:

The guys also took part in a boat cruise with fans in Darien Lake NY yesterday, and performed a few songs. Unfortunately the concert was cancelled due to the severe weather in the area and the band took to their Youtube page to apologize to fans:

I thought it was nice they did this, a lot of bands would have been "LOL sorry can't do anything about it bye!"

No lies detected in what Joe said about Bieber. Sometimes these young artists need to surround themselves with people who are willing to say "No" to them once in a while.
