Last week, we reported that Shailene Woodley was in talks to play Mary Jane Watson inAmazing Spider-Man 2. Well, now we know who'll be playing MJ, as well as which classic Spider-Man story they're currently building their movies toward.
Just as reported, it looks like Woodley will be playing a small part in the sequel as MJ, and will play an even bigger role in the third film, says THR. So what will happen to Peter Parker/Spider-Man's current love, Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone)?
Woodley initially had scheduling issues as an obstacle to the dealmaking, having had offers to play both Mary Jane and the Divergent lead. But the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic "Death of Gwen Stacy" story.
Right when it was announced that the new Spider-Man films would be grittier, darker and feature Gwen as Peter's primary love interest (with no signs of Mary Jane in the first movie), a lot of people were wondering if Sony would be eventually lead their story to the famous "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" arc. Well, I guess now we know that's where they plan on taking the film.
It's not locked that Sony would use this story, but it's definitely where they want to take the story. And I'm sure if this does end up going through fruition, it'll cause just as much buzz as when the story first went into print back in 1973. Oh... and does this mean we'll be getting a new version of Green Goblin? They plan on introducing Harry Osborn, and with that comes his father, Norman, so I can definitely see that happening.
