Michael J Fox has taken to Twitter to defend his new TV show, insisting he isn't mocking Parkinson's disease, simply having a sense of humour about his condition.

The Michael J Fox Show stars the 51-year-old actor - who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991 - as a TV news presenter with the condition. A trailer for the series has just aired in the US.

Michael wrote on Twitter: "You got it. Not making fun of myself, or pd or other people with pd or Parkinson's itself. Just showing a guy who looks at life with humour.

"Btw that wasn't an angry you got it was a thanks for getting it you got it and. 99.9 per cent of you get it. Thanks!"

The show is Michael's first starring role since he quit Spin City in 2001. He is also a producer on the project and admitted he has based it on his own life and family.

Breaking Bad's Betsy Brandt, who plays his on-screen wife, told reporters at a promotional press conference for the show: "I think he's one of the funniest people on TV ever - such a gifted actor and also such a great guy. There are not enough good things to say about him."
