The British designer, 71, who criticized Duchess Kate’s style and makeup earlier this month, has now taken on our first lady. In an interview with The New York Times, Westwood – while discussing her upcoming “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum – took a few jabs at Michelle Obama’s wardrobe choices, much to the reporter’s surprise:
The New York Times: You must love our first lady, who is famous for recycling her clothes.
Westwood: Don’t talk about her. It’s dreadful what she wears.
The New York Times: What?
Westwood: I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her.
Westwood, however, seemed to only have kind words for another first lady – Jackie Kennedy. “[She] was a different matter altogether,” Westwood said. “It just had to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous.
The response, as expected, has been less than forgiving, with readers calling Westwood a “very bitter and mean person,” “irrelevant” and even suggesting "someone’s in a snit because their clothes aren't being worn.”
