WITH HER DEBUT ALBUM COMING OUT NEXT MONTH,THE 20-YEAR-OLD INDIE-POP SIREN (AND MODEL) IS MAKING HER OWN RULES. NUMBER ONE: DON'T TOUCH THE HAIR!
INTERVIEW BY DARRELL HARTMAN
MARCH 2013 ISSUE
DETAILS: You got your big break on MySpace. But your social-media persona has also made you some enemies.
Sky Ferreira: I'm pretty sarcastic, and sometimes that doesn't come across on the Internet. It seems like I'm being rude or stupid. So I get shit for anything I say. There's always someone who'll respond on Twitter and give me a hard time. But it's the funniest thing: These kids try to bully me online, and then they all come to my shows!
DETAILS: Are you a sensitive person?
Sky Ferreira: I'm definitely a crier. I get really emotional if someone's being rude or says something mean about me. But I'm not usually a person who cries in public. I leave quietly and cry in the car.
DETAILS: You stalk actor Michael Madsen in the video for your 2010 single "Obsession," and you recorded a song with the chorus "My secret lover is 108." Do you have a thing for older guys?
Sky Ferreira: I've never dated younger. A lot of people my age are still figuring out what they want to do, whereas I always knew. So many girls I know, their boyfriend is living at their house and not working. I don't want a guy like that.
DETAILS: Did you get in a lot of trouble in school?
Sky Ferreira: I got kicked out for truancy. And I always got dress-code violations. I got kicked out of summer camp, too. It was a Jesus camp, and I wanted to go home. So when two girls in my cabin got caught with pot, I was like, "Yeah, I did it too!" They walked us all into a room and were like, "Jesus is really disappointed in you. You guys need to pray."
DETAILS: Michael Jackson was a family friend. What was that like?
Sky Ferreira: My grandmother worked on his hair for, like, 30 years, so I kind of grew up with him. I knew he was a big singer with a cool house, but I didn't know he was, like, Michael Jackson.
DETAILS: Your grandmother raised you. What does she think of your signature blonde mane?
Sky Ferreira: She's been trying to comb my hair since I was a little kid. And that's how I would wake up in the morning—with her chasing me around with a hairbrush. Even now, I'll be at her house and suddenly I'll feel this big paddle brush yank through my hair. She tries to sneak up on me! Obviously I would never hit her, but if anyone else ever tried that, I'd slap them.
