When the hell are we getting a trailer?! AKA a Game of Thrones season 3 anticipation post~

With nearly two months to go until season three of Game of Thrones debuts, the number one question that seems to be on fans’ minds these days is where is the trailer? We’ve had multiple behind-the-scenes videos and a boatload of photos, but all we’ve received in the trailer department are two short teasers devoid of any footage. So when can we expect a full trailer?

In past seasons, we had already received multiple trailers with footage from the show at this point in the year. In season one, there had been four(!) trailers released by the end of January 2011. Obviously, at that time, they were working to build hype going into the debut of the show. But even last year, we had two trailers that contained footage from the upcoming season two at this point in the game. So it’s fair to wonder why we haven’t seen a full trailer yet and when we can expect one.

As to the why, it seems that HBO is coordinating a slower build-up of promotional material than they have in the past. This is probably for a number of reasons, one being that the show is already quite popular and doesn’t need as many new promos to build buzz. Also, HBO has other shows that they would probably wish to spend marketing dollars on that actually could use some marketing. The other potential reason is that many fans have felt that past seasons had too many trailers released ahead of airing and HBO may have taken that criticism to heart and scaled back on the promos for this season. Lastly, this is a season that holds many surprises so it’s possible that HBO and producers David Benioff & D.B. Weiss want to preserve as many of those surprise as they can, so they feel putting out a bunch of trailers may give too much away.

So when can we expect to see the first real trailer for season three? The first full trailer for season two (the one that broke records) was actually released one year ago today. So if we look at it that way, HBO isn’t too far behind in the season three promos, assuming they release a full trailer in the next couple weeks. And I think that they will. It likely will not be this Sunday, as all of their new shows have been moved to Saturday this week, so they don’t have to compete with the Super Bowl.

(Some have speculated that they may run the trailer during the Super Bowl itself, to really maximize exposure. That seems highly unlikely for a couple reasons: 1) HBO has never aired an ad during the Super Bowl before, and 2) the cost required for even a 30 second ad is astronomical and the trailer would definitely be longer than 30 seconds.)

Could a new trailer air on Saturday then, ahead of new episodes of Girls and Enlightened? That is possible, although HBO generally likes to air these things in front of as many eyeballs as possible and I’m guessing that the move plus the fact that these episodes are already available on HBO Go and On Demand means that the ratings for Saturday’s airing will be pretty low.

I feel pretty certain that the trailer will air on a Sunday. And given that next Sunday will be Feb. 10 and we’ll only be seven weeks away from the premiere, I think there is a good chance it could be next week. If not next week, than almost certainly the week after. I don’t think there is any way HBO would want to be less than six weeks away from a new season of a show without having some sort of trailer. So the good news in all of this is that we likely only have to wait another couple weeks before we see the first full trailer for Game of Thrones season three!

ugh I can't wait tbh, I need footage from s3 now!!! :(
