Shipping is a time-honored tradition when it comes to the couples that populate our televisions. Here are our favorite twosomes that we rooted for in 2012.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), The Vampire Diaries
In the epic ongoing battle of which Salvatore brother is worthy of Elena Gilbert, the scales seemed to finally be even after Elena became a vampire and Damon accepted her darker tendencies while boyfriend Stefan (Paul Wesley) wanted to “fix her.” After breaking up with Stefan, Elena had sex with Damon in the Nov. 29 episode — but wait! Stefan thinks Elena has a rare sire bond to Damon, whose blood made her a vampire, and that’s why her feelings for him intensified — out of obligation, not love. And so the triangle continues…

Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), New Girl
This season, Nick and Jess finally acknowledged their mutual attraction. And creator Liz Meriwether has promised that they will “f—” but not marry, which we are OK with — as long as Jess uses that lingerie from season 1 and we finally get to see them makeout.

Sherlock (Johnny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu), Elementary
In this modern incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic series, Sherlock Holmes is a recovering addict who helps the NYPD solve crimes and Joan Watson is his sober companion. Although we’ve been told that they will never hook up — what’s the fun in having a female Watson if she doesn’t hit the sheets with the irritable detective at least once? And besides, Liu and Miller are smoking hot together.

Rayna (Connie Britton) and Deacon (Charles Esten), Nashville
Nashville’s reigning country queen has a past with her bandleader Deacon, but a present with her husband Teddy. But the smoldering looks between Rayna and Deacon tell us their story isn’t quite over. Even if he’s being chased by country princess Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), and even if she did send him to rehab, then marry someone else while he was trying to get sober.

Auggie (Christopher Gorham) and Annie (Piper Perabo), Covert Affairs
Like Bones’ Booth and Brennan and Castle’s Castle and Beckett before them, these colleagues would have to be blind not to see they have feelings for one another. Of course, Auggie is blind, which is why we’ve never grown impatient. But luckily, he did! In the final moments of the November season 3 finale, Auggie showed up at Annie’s place to finally have “the talk” he’d been waiting for — and, as it turns out, very few words were needed.

Those listed above: love, hate, or indifferent?
Which pairings would you add?
