... and the 'Lord Of The Rings' director wants
to bring the Doctor to Middle-Earth itself

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed that the prospect of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson helming an episode is still very much alive, and that talks are ongoing.

Doctor Who fan Jackson, who cast the seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy in the fantasy trilogy, told journalists last year that he’d be, “very happy to” direct an episode and that discussions were “actually kind of serious.”

Moffat, though, says that, while he’s still open to the idea, it all depends on the director’s schedule.

“He’s still incredibly busy on The Hobbit,” said Moffat. “I’ve spoken to him face to face, and he would like to do one. He accepts that there’s no money and that there’s no time, and it would have to be when he’s available – and I don’t think he’s even been available enough to answer our emails of late! I think it will probably happen at some point.”

Jackson has previously said that he would wave his fee for the prospective episode, and would instead settle for a new golden Dalek to go with the two classic Daleks he already owns. He told Entertainment Weekly a while back, "They don’t even have to pay me. But I have got my eye on one of those nice new gold-colored Daleks. They must have a spare one (hint, hint)."

Jackson has also expressed interest in materialising the Tardis in Middle-Earth itself: New Zealand. Steven Moffat, however, would rather just put him up in Wales – presumably not on his sofa.

“I think he’s sincere in his Doctor Who fandom, to say the least,"Moffat told SFX Magazine. "He’s a nice guy, he quite often drops me a line after a show goes out. He’s into it – it’s just 'Can you make it work?' I think he would also like us to go and make it in New Zealand! And I’m like 'Okaaay… I’d rather we just flew you to Cardiff!'”

Jackson joked last year that if he was allowed to film a story in New Zealand, he would want to do something, “with the [rugby union] All Blacks versus the Daleks. There's a good story in there, although obviously the All Blacks would have to win!"

The director, notorious for making long, bladder-busting films, has also said that he would relish the challenge of the small screen.

"I'd love to try my hand at television, because I've never had the discipline of having to shoot for those impossibly tiny schedules. I think I could do it okay now."
