Step Off True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Twilight & Buffy! The Strain Has Made Vampires Scary Again!

$
0
0

What makes The Strain different from all of these horror-sequence cliches is that it seemingly takes the most terrifying elements of the genre and combines them into one 45-minute TV show.

For too long, vampires have been depicted as little more than human being with a penchant for drinking blood. They can live among us, unnoticed, and develop relationships with people along the way.

True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Buffy the Vampire Slayer — the list goes on and on. Though a rogue vampire attacks every once in a while, they are, for the most part, a peaceful race.

They’re vampires! Blood-sucking, life-ending, terrifying vampires! And The Strain reminds us of that. “The idea of sort of reimagining the vampires, going back to the roots of what vampires are — that they are scary, dangerous creatures.” co-producer Carlton Cuse told reporters.

These vampires don’t blend in with the rest of the crowd. When they turn, they lose their hair, their heart, their personality — even their genitals. They actively hunt the people they used to love — spouses, children, parents. They’re swift, creeping out of the shadows unnoticed. And they needn’t even bite you to infect you — their bodies are riddled with worms that, if they enter a human body, will infect the host.

The Strain: Night Eternal is an adaptation of the vampire novel trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The second part of this installment — which covers the final book in the series — jumps us a bit into the future to show how far the bloodsucking plague has spread and "the heavy toll this battle has taken on our heroes," says artist Mike Huddleston.

In addition, he says that the gorgeously gross Dark Horse Comics graphic novel (on sale now) "gives an in-depth look into the ancient back story of the vampire plague, tracing its origins back from current day to Roman times all the way into prehistory. We're able to watch as the plague weaves its way through time."

Handpicked by Del Toro himself, Huddleston has been working on The Strain's illustrated iteration for over three years at Dark Horse, but has avoided the original novels and the TV show so as not to be influenced by other takes on the tale.

Unfortunately, all work and no spoilers has meant remaining in the dark in regards to what is coming next. "I don't know how The Strain ends! I'm reading the book as I draw it, so three years on I'm as excited as our readers for each new issue," he confesses. "Keeping myself away from the series has been more and more difficult though, I'm assuming early next year when I finish Night Eternal I'm having a The Strain binge viewing night."

Hip Hop Royalty Ashanti and Ja Rule Perform in Nigeria

Hip Hop Royalty Ja Rule and Ashanti have always proved to be “the best pair” on stage serenading music lovers across the world. And last Wednesday’s performance was not different as the American superstars kept fun seekers, in Delta State, Nigeria grooving throughout the night in the spirit of marking the nation’s 54th Independence anniversary.

The show, “Warri Again”, organised by Brownhill Event Centre, saw a galaxy of Nigerian artistes and comedians sharing the stage with the international artistes. It was indeed, a show of class and glamour as there was no dull moment while it lasted.

Despite the heavy downpour that almost marred the show, hordes of revellers continued swarming the event venue to catch a glimpse of the concert.
Ace-comedian, Ali Baba and songstress, Omawumi, who anchored the show, were in their best elements, dishing out rib-cracking jokes. The show kicked off at about 10 pm, with Seyi Shay mounting the stage to thrill the quality audience with her electrifying performance.

Thereafter, reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter, Patoranking took the floor and rendered his wave-making single “Girlie O”, But when he sang “Alubarika”, the audience took to their heels as they danced to the rhythm of the song.

Lena Dunham's book: oversharing, ‘unreliable narrator’ is a cover for millennial women

$

If you’re a pop-culture aficionado, you’ve probably read and heard and seen quite a bit of Lena Dunham lately. If you’re a Girls fan, you’ve probably seen just about all of her over the HBO show’s past three seasons. And if you’re a twentysomething urban female (as I am) or a millennial scrutineer (in which guise I sometimes moonlight), you’ve probably thought about her more than you’d like to admit.

Of course, if you were Dunham you’d admit everything. Her much anticipated book of personal essays — “Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s ‘Learned‘ — was published last week. The book is both successful and cathartic in its oversharing.

A memoir by the writer/actor/director/producer seemed to promise authenticity, unmediated by a film script or a television character or the interposition of a New York Times writer (there have been many). Except a book is just another medium. Dunham declared in hers: “I’m an unreliable narrator.”

That may be the most authentic thing about her. In the first episode of Girls, the character Dunham plays, Hannah Horvath, said: “I think that I may be the voice of my generation. Or at least a voice of a generation.”

Dunham is not the voice of my generation, and she knows it.”I think the ‘voice of a generation’ concept was lost with beatnik literature,” Dunham said in 2013. “Because of globalization and increasing populations, my generation kind of consists of so many different voices that need so many different kinds of attention. But if my writing can show what it’s like to be young, I’m happy.”

She’s right. Our generation has an abundance of digital outlets for individual voices; we don’t need to rest upon her singular — notably privileged, as well as ridiculously talented — one. New York Times reviewer Michiko Kakutani concluded: “Ms. Dunham doesn’t presume to be ‘the voice of my generation’ or even ‘a voice of a generation,’ as Hannah does in the show. Instead, by simply telling her own story in all its specificity and sometimes embarrassing detail, she has written a book that’s as acute and heartfelt as it is funny.”

Bleeding Cool’s Hollywood sources (which also brought you the news that Warners were shipping round a Supergirl series – though we did get the producer wrong) have just landed us a massive trout, flapping around on the Bleeding Cool deck.

That Fox are currently in deep development on a live-action X-Men TV show. And are starting to get interest in that as well. Which is how it leaked to us.

No details whatsoever. And right now, no way of getting any. Hopefully, as a result of this article, someone like Deadline will do the heavy lifting.

Or maybe someone will mention it at NYCC? We’ll keep our ears open.

Ryan Phillippe revealed that he and his ex-wife Reese Witherspoon told their kids all about Cruel Intentions on a recent trip to Central Park in New York City.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer actor sat down with Ricky Camilleri from Huffington Post Live and talked all about his relationship with ex Reese and their two beautiful children Ava, 15, and Deacon, 10. He admits, "[we've] gotten to a really great place."

When Reese was in New York City promoting Gone Girl and Wild, he met up with her and the kids for a great day in Central Park. "We got to meet up as a family and took a walk through Central Park with the kids, and it was funny-we were reminiscing then because we shot a lot of Cruel Intentions [there], so there we were with Ava and Deacon talking, and they were tripping out on the fact that we were there shooting a movie before they were even a thought in our minds," Ryan explained on HuffPost Live.

Even though the couple has been divorced since 2007, Ryan said that the two of them have really grown and figured out how to make it all work. "It's going well, and she's happy and remarried, and our kids are incredible. I'm proud of the way we've handled it and who our little people are," he told Ricky.

Reese isn't the only former Cruel Intentions star that Ryan has seen recently. While promoting Catch Hell on the Today show on Monday, he ran into Joshua Jackson who played Blaine Tuttle on the twisted film. "Randomly, one of your other guests today I made a movie with in 1998," Josh said during his Today interview.

"We were both kids. Now I just met his son, who is closing in on 10. He told me his daughter is in high school now. Yeah, it's amazing," he added.

Dominic Cooper Revels in Playing Villainous Mehmed II in ‘Dracula Untold’

Dominic Cooper is on a roll. Besides tracking down vampires in 2012′s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the English actor entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark’s father, Howard Stark, in Captain America: The First Avenger. It’s a part Cooper will reportedly reprise for ABC’s mid-season TV series, Agent Carter. Earlier this year, he hit full throttle in Need for Speed and has already completed the big-budget video game adaptation, Warcraft. Next up, though, Cooper taps into his evil side as Mehmed Sultan in Universal Pictures and director Gary Shore’s Dracula Untold.

Opening October 10, the film finds Vlad the Impaler (Luke Evans), AKA Dracula, seeking the Master Vampire to broker an unholy deal in order to save his family and people from a vengeful Mehmed, who leads the Turks. On the Dracula Untold set, Cooper sat down with the press to discuss grounding the movie, prosthetic woes and Mehmed’s motivations.

We hear you’re doing a really big stunt today.
Dominic Cooper: I am constantly doing stunt rehearsals. That’s all I seem to be doing. I just tried all my armor on that I will be wearing for the big stunt toward the end. I call it a stunt, but it’s really a fight. It’s a big, big, big fight between Vlad and myself. You do these things and this always happens, and what I never learn when you’re doing an action-based film is that you do weeks learning these fights. Then you try on this armor and you realize you can’t move. Then the whole thing has to be changed. It’s an incredible costume. It’s a very over-the-top but beautiful piece of armor. It’s all fully gold. I’ve got the Battle of Constantinople on the front of it and the arms. It’s incredible, but it’s so heavy I can’t move.

What’s the arc of the relationship between Mehmed and Vlad?
They have a history as kids. My take on it is Mehmed has always been terribly envious of this boy who had been pulled into his father’s palace. I like the relationship to be based in envy, jealousy and resentment. I think he saw Vlad as being a better fighter and stronger mind. I think Mehmed’s dad was always aware of this. This is something that is ongoing and is punctuated in the story itself. That comes to a head. We have put these extra ideas in that, on my father’s deathbed, it was Vlad he chose to speak to because he trusted him more as a warrior and future leader. It’s a clever bit of writing that they came up with close to the beginning of shooting. I loved it, that it was about him so desperately trying to understand or find out what it was the father shared with Vlad. He can tell he’s being lied to when Vlad comes out with these elaborate, over-the-top, kind words that he knows are not true. As revenge, I do to him what really, in a way, my father did, which is to insist on taking Vlad’s son into battle. I only do that for one reason: to anger and upset him.

Rumor Has It Obi-Wan Kenobi Is Getting His Own "Star Wars" Movie Series

"You will give me my own movies." That's what Ewan McGregor, using Jedi mind tricks, must have told LucasFilm, as rumors suggest Obi-Wan Kenobi will be getting a stand-alone movie series. We already knew George Lucas and Co. would be making Star Wars movies separate from the saga, but no central characters have been confirmed.

Originally (as in, like, a couple weeks ago) the rumor was that Obi-Wan would be the star of one of the stand-alone movies, but Cinelinx is suggesting three separate films (i.e. not another trilogy) set between Episode III and IV are in play. It's important to note, though, that even Cinelinx itself admits its own source could be misinformed.

Following the massive popularity spike of the Raid 2: Berandal's "Hammer Girl"Julie Estelle, Gareth Evans has reportedly added Julie Estelle back into The Raid 3 but as a different character.

Reusing cast members is nothing new to the Raid franchise as Yayan Ruhian aka "Mad Dog" in the Raid: Redemption appeared on The Raid 2: Berandal as Prokoso.

Aside from the Raid 3 news of "Hammer Girl" Julie Estelle returning to the 3rd movie, there is a rumor that is circulating around the internet that martial arts movie superstar, Donnie Yen, would appear on The Raid 3 but as cameo only.

While Donnie Yen and Gareth Evans haven't confirmed that talks between them have occurred, seeing other Asian martial arts superstars in The Raid 3 are something that fans want to see as evidenced when the Tony Jaa rumors for the Raid 3 spread throughout the internet.

Facebook Launching Anonymous App / SECRETS POST!

Facebook has been grappling with the issue of “real identity” lately. Last week, it issued an apology to drag queens, after forcing some to use their legal names.

According to the New York Times, Facebook will soon launch a mobile app to allow users to communicate anonymously, similar to apps such as Secret and Whisper.

Creating a separate mobile app under a different name doesn’t solve one of the social network’s existential questions: Does forcing people to use their real identities online enhance the social network, or leave its users exposed?

The web is full of anonymous alternatives to Facebook. But some users seem to want anonymity within Facebook’s core product. Facebook isn’t likely to allow that. Real identity drives its advertising business, which hinges on the ability to gather accurate, personal details about users so advertisers can target them with appropriate ads.

Nicki Minaj is smoking hot for L'Uomo Vogue

$

Nicki Minaj has a precise goal in mind and a tight game plan to get there: the New York rapper wants to earn five hundred million dollars and leave a permanent mark on the world of music. All within four years. After which, she will retreat and become a full-time mother. "I gave myself a time limit to reach my professional goals", says the 32 year-old singer on the telephone from her home in Los Angeles. "I don’t want to work my whole life without ever experiencing the joys of a family".

The singer, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, author of hits like Anaconda, Super Bass and Starships, never kept her ambitions a secret. And, in fact, she is not far from realizing them. Her rise to stardom was lightning quick, even by the Warholian standards of the term, thanks to a mixture of musical talent, sensuality and arrogance, which have transformed her in just a few years into the most influential woman in the history of hip hop. To gain respect in a world dominated by men who measure themselves by bouts of rhymes and testosterone, Minaj had to fight with her teeth and nails. She created a name for herself through her cameos in the songs of other male rappers (such as Monster with Kanye West, Jay-Z and Rick Ross). She constructed a persona with coloured wigs and eccentric costumes that highlight her body’s curves. And she has demonstrated her talent by mixing salty lyrics with passionate rhythms and risqué choreographies. "At first no one took me seriously», said the musician, who at the end of November will publish her third album, entitled The Pink Print. "In the world of rap, women are usually relegated to the choir".

With millions of records sold, tens of awards won and numerous sponsorships (including perfumes, clothing lines, cosmetics and toys), today this impression has definitely changed. The Caribbean artist, born Onika Maraj, is the only woman ever to have appeared on the Cash Kings list of highest paid rappers compiled by Forbes, the latest version placing her at number four, with 29 million dollars earned in 2013. It is therefore not surprising that Minaj has been compared to a female version of Jay-Z, considered the King Midas of hip hop for his ability to mix artistry and business. "It’s no coincidence that we have the same Zodiac sign – Sagittarius", points out Minaj, laughing at the comparison.

Minaj personally manages all of her business affairs, and since day one she has always aimed at transforming her name into a brand. "I want to build my empire. In my field, I have always seen men do it – from Diddy to Dr. Dre to Jay-Z. Now it’s a woman’s turn". In order to earn her success, she has created the image of a volatile and man-eating woman, who places her career above all else. It is therefore surprising to hear her dreaming about a traditional family with "an upright man, who will take care of me. The time is not yet ripe, but when I decide to get married and become a mother", she adds, speaking of her future soul mate, "I would like to take a hiatus and dedicate myself completely to my child".

On the other hand, family has always been a fundamental point of reference for the singer, through the good times and the bad. A few years after her birth, Minaj was left in the custody of her grandmother on the island of Trinidad while her parents emigrated to the United States in search of fortune. In the beginning, Minaj believed the separation would only last a few weeks, the time it would take to find a work and an apartment in New York. But two years passed before her mother came back to get her. In that period, the future rapper forged a profound relationship with her grandmother and with her entire extended family, who all took care of her and her brother. When her mother finally returned to the Caribbean island to take her back to the Big Apple, Minaj expected to fly to a land of fairy tales. But rather, she was catapulted into a nightmare. When they landed in New York, it was winter – unbearably cold, especially for someone who has never left the Caribbean. Her home in Queens, not far from JFK airport, was small and squallid; her father had fallen victim to crack fever – having become violent, unstable and unable to hold a job, he resorted to stealing from the household to support his toxic habits.

They were dark years for Minaj, who spent much of her time in a fantasy world, developing a series of imaginary characters, whom she would re-use in her musical career to express contradictory aspects of her personality. Roman Zolanski, angry, gay lunatic; Harajuku Barbie, the quintessence of femininity with baby-pink hair; Martha, Roman’s mother, with a strong British accent. In that period, Minaj saw her mother work exhausting hours to provide for her family while suffering her husband’s abuses. And she swore to herself that her life would turn out differently. "That experience had a profound influence on my way of being a woman – never let a man cross the line or control me, especially in my career". The absence of her father (with whom, since his coming clean, she has rebuilt a relationship) further strengthened Minaj’s relationship with her mother, who supported and guided her in all of her choices. It was she, for example, who pushed her toward the world of performance, convincing her not to give up after her first rejection from LaGuardia High School, the mythical New York high school from the series, Fame. By the irony of destiny, in fact, Minaj failed the musical audition and was accepted to the school because of her talent as an actress, a gift set aside in pursuit of her rap career, but which she dusted off this year for a role alongside Cameron Diaz in the comedy “The Other Woman”.

"Family has always been very important to me, and that is why I want to wait until the right moment before starting my own. Right now I am too busy, but at a certain point the situation will change". The question of how she will appease the role of a performer and business woman with that of a mother comes up often. For now, Minaj is so busy that at times she feels overwhelmed. Her most recent breakdown came during her return from Paris, where Beyoncé had invited her for a duet during a concert in mid-September. «I was flying in a private jet, tired from the performance and the jetlag, but instead of sleeping, I worried about all of the deadlines waiting for me in Los Angeles. I got really scared – I had a sort of panic attack". The problem is that Minaj always wants to be in control of everything and is not good at delegating to others. Luckily, however, beyond the stress it brought on, her trip to Paris helped her to confront these issues with someone who has made similar choices – and to come out of it with her chin up. "Seeing Beyoncé with her daughter and husband was so tender, and it showed me that it is possible to be an animal on stage and a caring mother at the same time".

Jessica Chastain: Meryl Streep is 'incredible' but other actresses deserve chance at lead roles

Jessica Chastain supports a woman's world in Hollywood.
The 37-year-old actress stuns on the November cover of Glamour magazine and opens up about being cast in strong female roles and why women should get more of those opportunities.
"I'm really, really supportive of women in Hollywood. I love Meryl Streep. She's such an incredible actress. But I feel like she's the only one in her age group who gets those parts. I'd like to see Jessica Lange in a movie again, you know? Or Susan Sarandon. Why isn't Viola Davis a lead in a film? She's one of the greatest actresses alive," she said of her fellow famous starlets.
"And where are the Asian actors and actresses? I'm not saying, 'We don't want movies about men.' I'm just saying, 'Come on, all the men I know love women. So let's also have some stories about these women. Let's write something for them, guys — and let's make room for women writers, too.'"
