Maleficent is Angelina Jolie's No. 1 live-action film

$

0

Talk about a fairy-tale ending.

Over the weekend, Maleficent raced past the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office to become Angelina Jolie's highest-grossing live-action film of all time, not accounting for inflation. Her previous best was Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which took in $478.2 million in 2005.

Maleficent, a passion project for Jolie, has enjoyed impressive staying power. In North America, the Disney title stayed in the top five in its fourth weekend, grossing $13 million for a domestic total of $186 million.

Also over the weekend, Maleficent passed up Disney's live-action fairy tale Oz the Great and Powerful, which grossed $493.3 million worldwide.

Overseas, the female-fueled movie took in another $44.7 million from 54 markets, including a $20.3 million debut in China. Maleficent has earned $335.6 million internationally and $521.6 million worldwide.

Maleficent's top international markets are Mexico ($40.4 million), Russia ($34.8 million), the U.K. ($25.7 million) and Brazil $24.2 million. The movie has yet to open in Japan (July 4).

'Rising Star' turns a clever voting gimmick into a reality train wreck.

There were reasons why I was feverishly anticipating the June 22 premiere of ABC’s Rising Star. Summer TV has been relatively weak so far, and it’s nice to think that a brand new reality competition might be worth investing in. We as a people may have grown tired of rote reality, but we haven’t yet gotten past that little inkling of hope that something will be the next big thing.

So is Rising Star that next big thing? The short answer is no. The long answer? Nooooooo.

The big gimmick of ABC’s newest entry into the singing competition genre revolves entirely around the “cutting-edge app technology” that allows viewers to vote for contestants in real time via a God-complex app similar to the dating gem Tinder. Swipe right for YES or left for NO (and if you’re on the West Coast, just don’t even bother because your votes only matter for redeeming the sloppy seconds of contestants not popular enough to make it through the first run on the East Coast). To raise a giant wall separating the audience from the performer, each singer must earn 70 percent positive votes (though the show never explains this, it appears that the grand number is based on those who have physically “checked in” for each individual performance).
A 7 percent share of the vote belongs to each member on the the panel of experts—Kesha, Brad Paisley, and Ludacris—who each could have been a compelling reason to elevate the show beyond the voting gimmick, but exercise little to no real enthusiasm for the program. Now, I’ll admit: I’ve been hyping Rising Star solely because of Kesha, the auto-tuned glittercorn voice of a generation of drunk sorority girls, but unfortunately, Kesha seems to have reformed her neon tribal war-paint ways (see: her abandonment of the dollar sign in her name) and isn’t the soundbite-spewing jackpot I thought she might be, even though host Josh Groban warned, “She’s beautiful, talented, and we have no idea what she’s gonna do or say tonight. Sorry censors, it’s Kesha!” How delightfully zany!

Groban, hosting his first major live event admirably like the most popular kid in your high school drama club, is awkward in his delivery, but he seems to be the only person genuinely excited to be on the show—and he’s the only expert actually mentoring the contestants and working with them on their songs and performances. Fellow experts Ludacris and Paisley seem a little more comfortable with the live element, but neither demonstrates enough enthusiasm or even speaks long enough to convince you that they’re here for more than just a paycheck.

That leaves the hope of Rising Star in the hands of the show’s actual singing talent—and truthfully that’s the most important part, right? Sadly, nobody from the two-hour opener showed much promise for giving Rising Star a coveted slot on your Sunday night DVR. Is it worth mentioning the forgettable Lisa Punch or Maneepat Molloy, who made it past their audition despite performances that never would have turned a chair on The Voice? Or is it worth acknowledging the acts that didn’t raise the wall, like the perhaps deserving Colin Huntley, or the manic, less-deserving Alex & Sierra knock-off Daniel & Olivia, or the boy band Beyond 5, whose smooth ’90s dance moves reeked of Dream Street cliché and One Direction ambition? Don’t even get me started on Macy Kate, the camera-ready Kesha lookalike who was supposedly plucked from the audience by total surprise after her Instagram audition video landed her a seat in the audience in the first place.

No, it doesn’t feel necessary to harp on any of the performers from the premiere of Rising Star, nor is it worth complaining about the panel of experts who add nothing more than a flimsy amount of credibility to an otherwise gimmick-laden cheesefest, NOR is it worth revealing that I started voting yes on every contestant just to see my Twitter profile picture show up on TV. (Spoiler: It never did.)

Just like the voting, the fate of Rising Star rests solely in the hands of average Americans like you. Sadly, it’s a joyless experiment in reality innovation that, despite best efforts from about 20 percent of the talent involved, never manages to make you want to swipe right.

Austin Mahone gets Interviewed on boat

Daytime Emmys red carpet hosts joke about rape, race, etc.

$

0

The 41st annual Daytime Emmy Awards online broadcast went off without a hitch, but the red carpet was another story.

The gist is that Brittany Furlan, Lauren Elizabeth, Jessica Harlow and Meghan Rosette, the "social media experts" hired to do the red carpet interviews, had seemingly very little training, preparation or even professionalism during the interviews, making a rape joke about "General Hospital" actor Ryan Paevey (above, left) and asking "The Bold and the Beautiful's" Lawrence Saint-Victor (above, right) what it's like to be a black man on a soap opera these days -- not for any kind of social commentary, but simply because that was the only question they had for him.

When it was announced that this year’s Daytime Emmys would be streamed online (and not broadcast), surely no one imagined that the accompanying red carpet pre-show would set the bar so unacceptably low, with an interview team that would lob rape “jokes,” talk about “go[ing] lesbian” for one actress and quite possibly not recognize more than five of the people they spoke to.

Rather than recruit any number of proper reporters who cover the daytime-TV genre, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences issued a casting call for “millennials between the ages of 18-35… who have a strong entertainment news background and/or very strong social media following (300,000 followers minimum),” Soap Opera Network reported.

What NATAS in turn hired was a quartet of “social media experts”: Brittany Furlan, Lauren Elizabeth, Jessica Harlow and Meghan Rosette.

Among the red carpet team’s more egregious affronts — and this is barely scratching the surface:

* Furlan said to nominated The Young and the Restless alum Daniel Polo— whom she didn’t know was no longer on the show playing Jamie, but that should be the worst of her shortcomings — “I don’t want to go to jail for this one.” Upon learning the young actor is in fact (barely) of age, she then remarked: “Oh, so he’s legal!”

* Furlan literally came onto, and hard, every male in attendance, to a degree that makes E!’s Giuliana Rancic look positively demure. Even Days of Our Lives‘ Galen Gering couldn’t help but throw shade at the brassy brunette as she squealed, “Oh my gawd!” at his castmate Greg Vaughan (Eric); see photo.

* Harlow asked Lawrence Saint-Victor (Carter, The Bold and the Beautiful) — “a beautiful chocolate man,” as she introduced him — “What’s it like to be a black man on a soap opera these days?” Not coming from any place of social insight, but simply for lack of anything else to ask him.

* Elizabeth asked veteran actor Joseph Mascolo (Stefano, Days), who had been introduced to them as a daytime legend: “What is so legendary about you, sir?”

* When presented with Monty Hall, Furlan and Elizabeth befuddled the iconic game show host by trying to explain to him what “shipping” is — in the context of Furlan ‘shipping Elizabeth and the 92-year-old Hall.

* After she and Elizabeth came onto Ryan Paevey (Nathan, General Hospital) six ways to Sunday, running the full gamut of clumsy doctor and policeman/handcuff innuendos, Furlan said as the actor left, “We’re going to get you away from us before we rape you.”

Imagine for a moment — but don’t, because it is sickening — if a male reporter had directed that comment to an actress.

Again, the above is but a small sampling of what the four “social media experts” (though mostly Furlan and Elizabeth) got away with over the course of the two-hour pre-show. (And all while asking barely a single storyline-related question, because being familiar with soaps of course was not part of the aforementioned job description.)

Many on Twitter have asked for NATAS to apologize for the red carpet car wreck, which many proper daytime-TV journalists repeatedly and vocally derided in social media. The soap opera acting community has enough problems claiming deserved respect for their work; associating them with such an inane production does no one any favors. Were you among those who “tuned in” to this mess?

Beliebers Angry Over Selena Gomez Romance Start “Ignore Justin Project”

Some Beliebers are not happy with Justin Bieber due to his renewed romance with Selena Gomez.

A contingent of fans started an “#ignorejustinproject” trend on Twitter on Sunday night, vowing to boycott the singer online.

One person, apparently feeling neglected, tweeted, “if justin can ignore us bc of Selena we can ignore him.”

Another called the performer “rude” for seemingly being less interactive lately and allegedly ignoring those who helped him rise to fame.

Of course, many more Beliebers also pointed out the ridiculousness of such a project, correctly noting that Bieber often goes above and beyond for his fans — and that they should want him to be happy.

Some pointed out that such anti-Bieber behavior is “immature,” “ignorant,” and “hurtful,” with one fan questioning how other can suddenly ignores “their idol,” “someone they [are] suppsosed[d] to love.”

“Leave this fanbase if you actually want to do this. What the hell is this. This is so mean,” wrote another loyal follower.

The “#ignorejustinproject” is now being countered by the “#supportjustinproject” and “ilovejustinproject.”

Known as 'The Passion of Kim Kardashian,' the exhibit opened in Bushwicklast week. Artist Hannah Kunkle, who created the artwork, said she's 'strangely fascinated' with Kardashian. But local clergy are not impressed.

A Brooklyn art gallery held an exhibit portraying Kim Kardashian as Jesus - and the Virgin Mary.

The show, "The Passion of Kim Kardashian," opened in Bushwick last week, flummoxing local clergy. They called the portraits of Kanye West's better half decked out in religious iconography distasteful.

Father Michael Perry of Our Lady of Refuge Church in Flatbush called the show "dumb and stupid."
"Everyone knows who Kim Kardashian is and I don't care who she is. She has no impact on my life at all," Perry said.

But the pastor also had some kind words for artist Hannah Kunkle's artwork.
"They are gorgeous photos. They are well thought out," he said.

Pastor Reggie Stutzman of Real Life Church in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx was less forgiving, and was particularly offended after seeing one of the portraits of the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star wearing a crown of thorns with a cross behind her.

VICE --

I discovered Hannah Kunkle's strange series of religious-themed graphic collages of Kim Kardashian on Instagram. They perplexed and excited me, so I asked her to create a slew of exclusive new ones in time for this season's cluttered religious celebrations. This month, Jews stuff their faces at Passover dinners, Christians stuff their faces at Easter brunches, and Bahá'ís do... I don't know, but they have, like, two holidays in April according to the University of Washington. Anyway, I'm not so into religion, but a faith based on the cutie with the booty is something I could definitely get behind. Here is what Hannah had to say about these awesome graphic lamentations on the power of celebrity, the cult of personality, and the fervor of fandom:

Kim Kardashian is God. She’s crazy bodacious and has the nose job of an angel. I don’t know if she’s omniscient, but no one can deny she’s not omnipresent. Kim floats above us all, even the deniers and the haters. We have accepted her into our lives via television screens, memes, and Instagram feeds. If Jay Z is the father and Yeezus is the son, then she is the ever-present holy ghost of pop culture.”

Hannah Kunkle is a graphic designer, artist, and Pratt grad living in Brooklyn.

Bindi Irwin tells teenage girls to 'cover up'

$

Bindi Irwin has unleashed her inner nanna ahead of her 16th birthday, telling girls her age to stop flashing so much flesh.

The wildlife warrior, who is increasingly ditching the khaki for the fresh fashions she shares with her almost 100,000 Instagram followers, told News Corp Australia she’s started “experimenting” with her style but remains a barefoot girl from the bush at heart.

“I guess for me, because I wear khaki so much — waking up every day at the zoo, you just kind of grab your khaki uniform and you’re pretty much good to go — that when I get out of khaki I like to experiment and see how things go,” she said.

“I suppose the last year or so really I’ve been starting to have some fun and see what I can do with make-up and wardrobe and be a little bit of a girlie girl.

“Finding that great line between comfort and looking semi-good is fantastic.”

The daughter of late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has always tackled the big issues — from animal protection to human overpopulation — but now she’s set her sights on a more conservative cause.

“I’m a big advocate for young girls dressing their age,” she said.

“I mean, for me, I look around at a lot of young girls that are my age and they’re always trying to dress older. Whether it’s wearing revealing clothes or hardly wearing any clothes at all, I feel really bad for them.

“It kind of has the opposite effect in some ways ... it kind of does the opposite where it makes you look younger and like you’re trying too hard.”

The entertainer, who says she wants to influence others with her fashion choices, has some wise words.

“I almost wish I could tell young girls, ‘look, in 10 years when you look back at yourself, you’ll cringe honey, honestly’,” she said.

“A lot of times I want to grab these girls and say ‘look ... in 10 years you’ll regret this. Just dress like who you are. Don’t try so hard. A pair of jeans and a T-shirt is just as gorgeous and even makes you look classier’.

“I look at adults and they say ‘when I was young I was wearing blue eye shadow’ and I’m cringing. So to be able to have that outlook on life is such a blessing and I’ve gotten that from my mum especially.

“The way I choose to dress, I want to influence other people around me I suppose.”

The mature teenager says she strives to share her outlook on life because, at just 15, she feels wise beyond her years.

“My mum and I, we were playing this game, how old would you be if you didn’t know how old you really are? Like how old is your soul? And I said ‘I’d be 86’,” she said.

“I suppose it’s just who I am. I find that what I’m passionate about and what I talk about ... I actually have a better connection with older people than I do with younger people.

“I like cups of tea and reading books and poetry and old people things.”

And far from the wild ways of other teen stars, Bindi — who turns 16 next month — said she steers clear of cigarettes and alcohol.

“I love a cup of tea and a good book and none of that really interests me,” she said.

“I guess growing up at Australia Zoo and getting to travel all over the world I have this great outlook on life and that’s what I hope I inspire other kids to have.”

Bindi will be celebrating her 16th birthday at Australia Zoo on July 24.

Alicia Keys Glows in Givenchy Campaign, Obvi

WHAT A BEAUTY

A month after Givenchy announced Alicia Keys as the new face of Givenchy Fragrance, the Grammy winner's ad is finally here — and it's gorgeous.

Alicia Keys looks stunning in a strapless gold gown, slicked back hair and glowing skin for Givenchy's Dahlia Divin -- which launches globally in September.

For her first beauty campaign, Keys is shown wearing a strapless embellished frock designed by Riccardo Tisci, who chose her as the first face of Givenchy's new scent, Dahlia Divin. Tim Walker shot the print ad in a Paris atelier, as well as a TV campaign that will feature music by the singer.

"Spiritually we're a lot alike. The fashion world can make you a little soulless. So when I met him, it was nice to see that he's really soulful," Keys described to WWD of Tisci, adding, "He did this awesome thing with me on the 10th anniversary of my first album. We did four intimate shows with just me on the piano, and he designed the look for them."

Keys' next album is tentatively set to release in early 2015. "This album is more about the concept, the thought I'm trying to get across, where in the past it's been more about the melody. This time it's more about what we're going through as human beings," she said of her upcoming record.

“This scent is grounded, but still has a femininity that is very earthy, and I love that,” Keys told WWD.

And while this marks Keys' first-ever beauty contract, the 33-year-old has some pretty awesome ideas on the future of the beauty industry -- namely when it comes to diversity.

“It seems that only one type of beauty is seen as beautiful. I think it’s very important that we stretch that concept and the way that it’s viewed. The biggest mistake is to think that beauty is physical. Beauty is so internal, and it’s about who you are and what you believe in, what you stand for. That’s what makes you beautiful," Keys told WWD. "I think that’s really important to infuse into the conversation in the beauty world. I would like to see different representations of what beauty is. I’d like to see women with a little more voluptuousness. There’s no way in the world that we’re all a size 2, and people beat themselves up if they’re not small enough or light enough or dark enough or skinny enough."

Liv Tyler Shares Beauty Tips She Learned From Her Dad

Liv Tyler is pretty in polka-dots while making an appearance on Good Morning America on Friday (June 20) in New York City.

The 36-year-old The Leftovers actress recently chatted with Glamour about the beauty tips she learned from her rocker dad Steven Tyler.

“In the ’90s, when I was a kid, my dad was always telling me I needed a little body in my hair. [His process was to] use two blow-dryers at the same time, shake out his hair, then flip it up—and I was like, ‘Daddy, I don’t want my hair like that!’ I liked my hair flat, silky, and tucked behind my ears,” Liv said.

“Today when I go and stay with him, I always have to raid his cupboards because he’s got all the best creams. He’s, like, a major moisturizer. He’ll cover his whole body in oil and moisturizer and walk around the house in a pair of shorts. Me, I do face masks all the time. Even when I’m walking around the house. It has always been fun to watch him get dressed. But I definitely don’t think of him when I’m getting dressed.”

Frances Bean Cobain To Lana Del Rey: “Stop Romanticising Death”

$

0

While everyone else follows the back-and-forth between Lana Del Rey and The Guardian journalist Tim Jonze, Frances Bean Cobain has offered Del Rey some perspective on the comments that sparked the controversy. The daughter of the late Kurt Cobain chided the singer for glorifying death.

“The death of young musicians isn’t something to romanticise,” Frances Bean took to Twitter to write. “I’ll never know my father because he died young and it becomes a desirable feat because people like you think it’s ‘cool’. Well, it’s fucking not. Embrace life, because you only get one life.”

While discussing her heroes — most of whom had died young — in an interview with The Guardian last week, Del Rey replied in the affirmative when asked if she saw dying young as glamorous. She then added, “I wish I was dead already… I do! I don’t want to have to keep doing this. But I am.”

Del Rey later retracted the comments, saying journalist Tim Jonze was “sinister” and “calculated” and posed as a fan to secure Del Rey’s trust and goad her into saying incendiary things. Jonze responded via the paper, defending his interview questions and sharing audio of Del Rey’s quote.

“The [people you] mentioned wasted [their lives]. Don’t be one of those people,” Frances Bean added on Twitter. After a fan told the daughter of the Nirvana singer to take it easy on Del Rey, she replied, “I told her to not waste her life… I literally said embrace this life because you only get one.”

“I’m not attacking anyone. I have no animosity towards Lana, I was just trying to put things in perspective from personal experience,” she added. Tagging Del Rey’s personal Twitter account in each dispatch, Frances Bean cautioned the singer, “[You're] too talented to waste it away.”

Buzz Osbourne expressed similar sentiments when speaking to Music Feeds last month. The Melvins frontman and a personal friend of Kurt Cobain said it was “insane” to look at the situation surrounding the Nirvana frontman’s death as anything besides a tragedy and a “nightmare.”

“If [fans] wanna look at, through rose-coloured glasses, a situation where a heroin addict, who was a friend of mine, dies under absolutely tragic circumstances, if they wanna see the romantic side of that or like there is somehow some good to that then they’re insane,” stated the Melvins leader.

Why is no one taking about awesome feminist, Caitlin Stasey?

AN Aussie actress has lashed out at Bindi Irwin after the 15-year-old wildlife warrior suggested teenage girls should dress more modestly.Caitlin Stasey launched a Twitter tirade after Bindi told News Corp Australia girls her age should dress ‘classier’.

“I’m a big advocate for young girls dressing their age,” she said.“I mean, for me, I look around at a lot of young girls that are my age and they’re always trying to dress older. Whether it’s wearing revealing clothes or hardly wearing any clothes at all, I feel really bad for them. It kind of has the opposite effect in some ways ... it kind of does the opposite where it makes you look younger and like you’re trying too hard.”

Bindi’s comments upset the former Neighbours star so much that she took to Twitter to share ‘an open letter to Bindi’.

“In ten years you’ll wish you stood beside your shared sex rather than be proud you belittled their choices & agency,” Stasey tweeted. The 24-year-old actress also attacked Bindi over her association with SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida.“Also, in ten years you’ll deeply regret your affiliation and support of Sea World ... To hazard a guess,” she wrote.

Bindi faced a backlash in the US after entering one of America’s most heated public relations battles when she, alongside mother Terri and brother Robert, announced during an appearance on the top-rating US morning TV program Good Morning America that she was teaming up with SeaWorld theme parks in March.

Orlando-based SeaWorld Entertainment Inc has been dogged by bad press, protests and boycotts by performers including Willie Nelson and The Beach Boys the past year after the release of the award-winning film documentary Blackfish, which probes the treatment of killer whales at the company’s theme parks.

But Stasey has recently courted controversy of her own, after the former soap star shocked social media users after posting topless images and sexually explicit expletive-ridden Twitter rants. The Hollywood-based actress last week used Twitter to take a swipe at everything from Hollywood and its sexualisation of women, to controversial photographer Terry Richardson.“This industry protects, forgives & celebrates sex offenders in whatever form they come, welcome to the Catholic Church that is Hollywood,” she wrote to her 30,000 plus followers. She also shared her views and experiences on oral sex.

Twitter users have defended the young conservationist, telling Stacey to leave Bindi alone.
But The Tomorrow When the World Began actor bit back.“Hey, to all coming to her defence by claiming she’s ‘only’ a child. Quit being so goddamn patronizing,” she tweeted.“I’m a sex crazed vulgar lunatic, she a respectable and undeniable Bastion of modesty,” she added.

Bindi, who is currently in the US with her mother Terri and brother Robert, is yet to respond.

Jennifer Lopez and Maksim Chmerkovskiy Get Very Close During Night Out Together

$

New photos of Jennifer Lopez and Maksim Chmerkovskiy getting very close is doing little to quash rumors that the good-looking duo might be dating.

E! News already reported that the 44-year-old singer and the 34-year-old Dancing With the Stars pro hung out together Saturday night at The Shrine Club in Connecticut after one of J.Lo's concerts at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket. And now, we have photos to prove just how intimate things got between the possible new couple!

In one dark snapshot, Lopez and Chmerkovskiy stand side by side inside the club. Chmerkovskiy, who's wearing a white T-shirt, looks down at what is presumably his cellphone as Lopez smiles and stares down at his phone with their faces just a few inches from each other's.

In a second pic, the duo stand a little further apart while still facing each other. While there's no major PDA in the photos, one thing's for sure: both of them look visibly happy to be hanging out together!

In addition to the pics, a source tells E! News Lopez and Chmerkovskiy arrived to the joint around 12:30 a.m. and were "flirty" during the night. Lopez's manager and some other people were also in their group. "They partied and seemed really at ease together," the source said.

When Lopez left around 1:45, they hugged goodbye and he stayed inside the club.

Lopez and Chmerkovskiy met last November when they shared the stage at the 2013 American Music Awards during her tribute to Celia Cruz and have kept in touch since.

Meanwhile, Lopez stopped by Hot 97 radio station this week and opened up about still believing in marriage. "I've tried to be married before," she said. "It's not the easiest thing in the world but at the same time I do believe in it. I believe in the institution, I believe in committing to someone."

New trailer for The Purge: Anarchy. Now with more Frank Grillo!

For those who felt the first The Purge was too limited and too familiar, The Purge: Anarchy takes the same basic premise but goes in a bolder, more extreme direction. Once again, the story is set in a dystopian America where, in a ghastly effort to weed out the weak and let the strong blow off steam, all crime has been legalized for one twelve-hour period per year.

But this time, the action spills out onto the streets as Frank Grillo plays a man who heads out in search of revenge. Unfortunately for him (and the others with him), it’s not long before the tables are turned on them.

The whole idea of a Purge is horrifying enough, but the trailer gets really disturbing once the rich people show up. Then it starts to feel like an even more awful version of The Hunger Games, right down to the garishly decorated emcee. From here, it looks like The Purge: Anarchy deserves kudos for taking fuller advantage of this sickening premise.

The Purge: Anarchy opens July 18. Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, Carmen Ejogo, and Michael K. Williams also star.
