New Zealand activists must pay for Lorde cancellation: Israeli court

- Jewish Justine Sachs and Palestinian Nadia Abu-Shanab of New Zealand wrote a letter urging Lorde to cancel her concert in Tel Aviv,

- Lorde listened to them,

- 3 Israeli teenagers claimed their “artistic welfare” was damaged,

- Israeli judge Mirit Fohrer ruled that Justine and Nadia must pay damages totalling more than NZ$18,000,

- both of them have no intention of doing so and say Israeli law does not apply in New Zealand,

- they started a crowdfunding page to raise funds for The Gaza Mental Health Foundation,

- Lorde did not comment.

Showtime adds cast members to Roger Ailes miniseries

*Showtime has added several new cast members to it's upcoming eight-episode limited series about Fox News founder Roger Ailes.

*Sienna Miller (Live By Night) will play former NBC news producer Elizabeth 'Beth" Ailes, Roger Ailes wife.

*Seth MacFarlane (The Orville, Family Guy) will play Brian Lewis, FOX News' public relations chief who protected Aiels.

*Simon McBurney (The Theory of Everything) will play Rupert Murdoch.

*Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders, The Mummy) will play Laurie Luhn, a booker at Fox News who had an abusive relationship with Ailes.

*Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts were previously announced as Roger Ailes and Gretchen Calrson.

If you forgot, Veronica traded away the final key piece of the Southside to her dad in exchange for Pop's diner whose basement will be the site for her speakeasy. The writers were originally thinking of having her operate a casino before realizing she's not old enough for that.

OPENING NIGHT — When a series of suspicious roadblocks threaten to delay the opening of the speakeasy, Veronica of all her friends (except Bughead who are busy with a mystery) to ensure opening night goes off without a hitch.

Elsewhere, Bughead follow different leads to learn more about the strange incidents going on in the town.

Finally, some unwanted attention forces Archie to make a difficult decision about his future.

'Beautiful Boy' Promo Roundup

  • TIME spoke to Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet about their new film Beautiful Boy, based on the memoirs by Nic and David Sheff. It releases this weekend in NYC & LA, and goes nationwide November 2nd.

  • TIME's interviewer, Sam Lansky, talked about his own struggles with addiction and how the film hit home for him in depicting the ongoing struggle with sobriety and the frustration and repetition of relapses.

  • Chalamet on the current opiate epidemic: “Young people have such disillusionment with our post-post-post-industrial world, where student debt is crazy and job opportunities are less afforded to people... There’s a misconception that addicts are using with a great amount of euphoria, when in reality, they’re just keeping up a feeling, or avoiding reality.”

  • Carell related to his character as a father: “Being a dad, there’s an inherent worry you have as soon as you have kids that never goes away. To experience them spiraling out of control with absolutely no recourse… David was mourning his son while his son was still alive.”



  • Newsweek talked to the Sheffs about the film.

  • Nic began drinking when he was 11, experimented with pot & coke in high school, and started using crystal meth at 18. He became addicted quickly, and in his early 20's, thought death might be preferable to living sober.

  • He's now 36, married and sober for eight years. He writes for the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why.

  • The movie doesn't do the typical drug story arc, where the character develops a problem, hits rock bottom, and gets clean or dies.

  • From the article: Beautiful Boy ably conveys the way addiction corrupts behavior, turning abusers of heavy-duty drugs into ugly caricatures of themselves, and the film is most powerful watching Chalamet. Nic, once bright and gentle, becomes erratic and demonically self-destructive. “They look like sociopaths,” says Bienenfeld. “They do whatever they can in the service of addiction—which looks like lying, cheating, stealing.” That, he adds, “doesn't make them bad people.”





  • Timothée Chalamet appeared on Jimmy Fallon on October 10th.

  • They talk about the film, the thoroughly embarassing #ChalametinArt, and life after an Oscar nomination.




  • Not everything in the film measures up to Timothée Chalamet's performance, but it's worth seeing for that alone.

  • Although many actors have played teens with drug issues, Chalamet echoes the best parts of earlier portrayals but still makes it his own.

  • David's character (Steve Carell) is kind of self-involved, not giving Karen (Maura Tierney) and Vicki (Amy Ryan) enough to do.

  • Some of the film's most affecting moments depict collateral damage to family members.

  • There's no lesson to be learned, just one family's story of struggling with addiction.

Marvel fires a writer for being too political on Twitter

Messy Marvel strikes again!

Author Chuck Wendig announced today on Twitter that he was fired from the company for his outspoken, pull-no-punches political talk on Twitter. Editor Mark Paniccia told him his trashing of right-wing garbage is too vulgar and negative. Chuck was in the middle of writing a new Star Wars book for the company. Wendig has faced harassment from right-wingers not just for his views but for also introducing a gay character in a Star Wars novel he wrote.

This messiness comes off the heels of Marvel canceling a 6-issue Vision miniseries by Chelsea Cain two months before launch with almost no notice given. Cain is another writer outspoken about politics who has faced vicious harassment from right-wingers, but Marvel claims that had nothing to do with dropping the book. She says she's now dead to the company after rightly ignoring its call to stay quiet about the cancellation.

Meanwhile, a man who pretended to be Japanese still runs the comic division as its EiC.

In next week's SVU episode, a female-empowerment group is naturally led by a middle-aged white man (Sebastian Roche!) and its members are dressed like extras from The Handmaid's Tale, for some reason. And one of them dies. I wonder who did it. Also, NBC no longer seems to be posting promos on youtube, because they have clearly given up on this show, as have we all. Oh, and Rollins is pregnant but she is keeping it a secret so she won't be put on desk duty, because she has never once made a good decision in her entire goddamn life.

- finally removed after nearly a year of firing everyone that matters or cares about him, blasting customers, hairdrying his pubes, wasting emergency resources, and just being a messy shitshow

-In its application, Estée Lauder said its fight to oust Truaxe was fuelled by hundreds of "outrageous, disturbing, defamatory, and/or offensive posts" he made on Deciem's social media pages over the last year that "harmed" the business and its reputation.

- Mark Gelowitz, a lawyer representing Estée Lauder, said Truaxe's Instagram posts and his decision to close the business had caused notices of breach from landlords, concerns from suppliers and legal claims from employees to start "piling up."

- In court Friday, Nicola Kilner was appointed to replace Truaxe at Deciem's helm. Lawyers for Estée Lauder, Deciem and Cusano said they had spoken to Kilner who is willing to take the reins of the company and hopes to get the brand operating again on Saturday. Kilner did not respond to requests for comment.

Cardi received acclaim for her performance at the AMA's for her #1 single "I Like It", she celebrated her 26th birthday and her song Taki Taki is about to top the charts. Cardi took time out and shouted her Taki collaborator Selena Gomez with a heartfelt post on social media. Gomez is undergoing treatment but Cardi made sure she has her back. Cardi also said on social media that she wanted her husband to flex her like a new york pretzel for her birthday.

Quavo dropped his solo album last night, and devoted a track titled 'Huncho Dreams' to Nicki Minaj, as a response to her 'Barbie Dreams' where she fantasizes about bedding male rappers.

In the track he details raunchy sexual exploits with Minaj, alleging he came on her face, left her $5 on the counter, and admitting he was the one who bought Minaj those Chanel bags she was seen opening on Instagram.

He even had a Minaj impersonator at his release party, parodying the way she reacted to his gifts.

Gerard Butler Pulls out of Saudi Trip amid Khashoggi Scandal

  • The actor was due to land in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday following stops in London and Tel Aviv to promote action thriller Hunter Killer, which was having its premiere in Riyadh that night, but a rep has confirmed that, in the wake of the Khashoggi scandal, a decision was made to cancel the visit.  "Given the circumstances, it was no longer appropriate to make the trip," the rep stated.

  • Since Saudi Arabia announced it was lifting a ban on cinemas in December 2017, several stars have visited the country, including John Travolta, Idris Elba and Ian Somerhalder, while crown prince Mohammad Bin Salman courted Hollywood heavyweights during a U.S. tour in April.

  • With the situation surrounding the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi, Butler may not be the only celebrity to drop out.

A Discovery of Witches: Episode 5 Discussion Thread

Let me preface this by saying I'm fully on board, and much like Diana I vow to NEVER leave this show that I've only known for three weeks.

But.







Mathieu Timothee Cumberbatch le Clearmount, let's be clear here: you laughed at Diana last week for saying "I love you" after three weeks and left her in her self-made rain with your weird mom.

But now that you're ready to say it back, you guys are vampire married 4 ever?

BUT ALSO you won't "make love" to her, because it's too soon!?!

I love every second of this wild show and the biggest vampire diva since Angel.

Anyway.

Den of Geek chooses instead to open their review with a discussion on boring old Gillian not dying (even though she should just have died). I swear to God if Mathew made her a vampire I will riot. I'm sure that Louise Brealey is a lovely person, but this character is incredibly annoying and I have no idea what else they plan to do with her (unless she's going to be yet another character who shouts down a phone at Diana).

Meanwhile, back in France, Ysabeau tries her damndest to put out Diana's unquenchable pants-fire for her sexy son. First by eating a fox in front of her, and then by casually announcing that Matthew will never stop loving his dead human wife from literally 1500 years ago. She tells Diana that Matthew probably/definitely committed suicide after the death of his wife and son, and that she sired him in his last dying moments, so that was cool.

Naturally, it doesn't work. Diana, wearing a chic poncho/wrap, announces dramatically that she will NEVER LEAVE the man she met less than a month ago who has repeatedly warned her that he's kind of a shitty dude to spend the rest of your life with. But, I mean, he wears the hell out of a suit. So what can she do?

The real MVP of this episode is Hamish (Fresh Meat's Great McHugh) who manages not to roll his eyes at his incredibly corny BFF, gives him some solidly foolish advice about following his heart, and tries -- for a moment -- to make something about him before Matthew insists on his pain and love being the most important thing of all time. That said, I did genuinely find the "I love you" between two supernatural bros quite cute.

Was this the best stupidly entertaining episode yet? I say yes.
