Bernie Sanders Faces Criticism for Anti-Sex Trafficking Bill; Cardi B Called on to Educate Him

$

Bernie Sanders, who earlier this week noted that Cardi B was right in drawing attention to the importance of social security, is now coming under fire for invoking Cardi B while allegedly not supporting sex workers. Critics point out that he voted for FOSTA-SESTA, the Stop Enabling Sex-Trafficking Act which was passed last week, which they argue does not draw enough distinctions between sex trafficking and consensual sex work.

Adult film actress Sydney Banks pointed out that Cardi B is a former stripper and accused Sanders of using her while voting for legislation that could endanger sex workers.

Ginger Banks, another adult film actress is making a video to explain to Sanders the problems with the bill.

Some fans have been calling for Cardi B to explain to Sanders the potential consequences.

Cardi B has not yet commented.

ONTD Original: (4) Artists Who Failed On Major Labels

$
0
0

For an aspiring pop superstar, a major label deal is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the culmination of sometimes years of hard won battles and minor victories in the independent sphere. But though these deals often bring with them increased exposure, an inflated budget and an abundance of networking/collaborative opportunities, they by no means guarantee graduation into the upper echelon. For some, a label can be creatively stifling, while others may be given a world of chances and boundless freedom, only to fall short time after time.

The artists examined in this post for the most part fall into that latter group - promising talents, seemingly sure things that, for one reason or another, just couldn't break the Bubbling Under Hot 100 ceiling.

Brooke Candy

The Comeup: The daughter of Hustler CFO Tom Candy, Brooke made waves in the summer of 2012 when she appeared alongside Grimes in the experimental artist's "Genesis" music video. Between 2012 and 2013, she independently released three songs - "Das Me,""Everybody Does," and the Britney-sampling "I Wanna Fuck Right Now" - that established her as a new talent to watch on the underground club-rap scene.

The Breakthrough: Upon making her major label debut as a featured artist on Charli XCX's 2013 album 'True Romance,' Candy secured her own contract with RCA at the beginning of 2014. By now having gained the admiration of the fashion set, her first single with the label ("Opulence," produced by Diplo and co-written by hitmaker Sia) boasted a music video styled by Nicola Formichetti and directed by Steven Klein. An EP of the same name followed that May.

The Fallout: After 'Opulence,' Candy set her sights on her debut album, to be called 'Daddy Issues' and executive produced by mentor Sia. A string of singles would drop and fail to connect with audiences, and in 2017 Candy parted ways with RCA, telling Noisey that the label retained ownership of 'Daddy Issues' and that it was effectively shelved. Candy released "Volcano," the first single from her as-yet-unreleased new EP, in July.

Jake Miller

The Comeup: A native of Weston, Florida, Miller's career was jumpstarted by a talent competition win at the age of 18. The $35,000 prize helped fund his pursuit of pop stardom, and he would release his first mixtape 'Summer Session' a few months later.

The Breakthrough: The top of 2013 would see Miller signing with independent label E1 Music, and in November he would drop his debut album 'Us Against Them.'Miller's breezy blend of pop and hip hop, as well as his heartthrob-by-numbers looks, would grab the attention of Warner Brothers, under whom he would release three EPs between 2014 and 2016 and gain representation from Wilhelmina Models.

The Fallout: After 2016's 'Overnight' EP, a high-gloss blend of pop and R&B in the vein of Nick Jonas and Justin Bieber, failed to launch Miller into the stratosphere, he quietly parted ways with Warner Brothers. He has since released two albums via Empire Distribution, much to the delight of his small but dedicated fanbase, the "Millertary."

Leighton Meester

The Comeup: Meester was already a star when she began pursuing music in 2009, having entered the pop consciousness two years earlier with the series premiere of The CW's scandalous teen drama 'Gossip Girl.'

The Breakthrough: Upon signing with Universal Republic, she lent her vocals to Cobra Starship's "Good Girls Go Bad," which peaked at #7 on the Hot 100. Her debut single, the slinky Robin Thicke-assisted "Somebody to Love," premiered several months later, with an album scheduled to follow in early 2010.

The Fallout: Neither "Somebody to Love" nor followup single "Your Love's a Drug" made much impact, and after several delays an album said to include productions by Polow Da Don and Harvey Mason Jr. (Britney Spears'"Mannequin," Fifth Harmony's "Sledgehammer") and a collaboration with Lil Wayne was shelved. Nearly five years later, Meester would finally release her debut album - 'Heartstrings,' which blended elements of folk and dream pop and received generally positive reviews.

Azealia Banks

The Comeup: With the release of "212" in September 2011, the then-still unsigned Banks seemed posed for world domination. The track solidified her as a force to be reckoned with in hip hop, and landed on many year-end best of lists. A contract with Interscope would soon follow, and the following spring would see the release of the critically acclaimed '1991' EP under the label.

The Breakthrough: Upon dropping her 'Fantasea' mixtape several months later, Banks would once again be heaped with accolades, the anticipation for her upcoming debut LP 'Broke With Expensive Taste' building to a crescendo.

The Fallout: A string of failed singles and label disagreements - not to mention a growing reputation as a burning hot mess - would lead to Banks parting ways with her label nearly one year after the release of 'Fantasea.'She would surprise-release 'Broke With Expensive Taste' a few months later, but her continued antics on- and offline would all but overshadow it and any subsequent projects.

She posted on her IG a semi-censored photo of herself nursing their baby girl Mia while fully topless, prompting several people to leave criticizing comments.

Criticism 1
"I’m all for breastfeeding and having a choice how to feed your baby but WHY do people feel the need to post pictures of themselves doing it?! Especially the new pic of Robin Thicke’s gf! She’s got hair done, makeup on, both boobs out. So strange. What’s the need?? #opinions.”

Geary replied :
"Maybe the next time you want to criticize me for posting a picture of myself breastfeeding you should really take a look at the pictures you've had taken. Not that taking nudes are wrong! The naked body is a beautiful thing! But don't be a hypocrite mama."

"If you think seeing women post pics of themselves breastfeeding is weird then ya'll need to grow up...it's just a boob. Calm down ya'll."

Criticism 2
“Another child with divorced parents. Will you guys stop the madness lol kids aren’t a joke like this relationship.”

Geary replied :

ONTD Original: Throwback to Britney and Gaga's Parking Fails 🚗

Celebs: they're are just like us! And they get into embarrassing car accidents. Yes there are threatening cases that happen in the streets, but sometimes sh** goes down in the parking lot too.

Britney Spears in Hollywood (2007)

It's no secret 2007 was a rough year for her, and the presence of paps did not help either. Britney was heading to a pharmacy in Hollywood driving her Mercedes station wagon, when she accidentally pulled up a little too soon and rear-ended the car next to her. Cameras flashed away as she readjusted her parking position and got out to see the damage.

Check out the clip:

Let's not forget when she opened the door and immediately nicked the car.

Britney investigates.

I'm not sure if she helped take care of the situation, but I hope she had the same concerns as Cher Horowitz.

Lady Gaga Rear-ending Mark Ronson's Car (2016)

Gaga, likely due to the New Yorker in her, was a late bloomer and obtained her driver's license in the same year at the age of 30.

This accident was not recorded, but the aftermath was conveniently captured for the filming of her Five Foot Two documentary. Gaga did some nice damage to music producer Mark Ronson's car with her Ford Bronco when she was on her way to the studio to work with Ronson and Florence Welch. She confronted him before they started working. (what a lovely way to begin a recording session)

Check out the clip:

Gaga after hitting his car and apologizing:

The collaborators look back at the incident fondly:

These moments bring up the question about the recent trend of proclaiming gays can't drive over social media.

So fellow LGBT/ONTD members, do you find driving and parking stressful or in anyway difficult? Are you a gay who can't drive?

At age 90, author Mary Higgins Clark is still pumping out two books a year

-Why is Mary Higgins Clark still writing? She says loves to write, and that she is paid very well for doing so
-Her books have sold over 100 million copies in the U.S. alone
-She turned to writing at age 36, when her husband died of a heart attack and she had to support her 5 children
-She spends 6 hours a day writing and plots out an entire book before starting it - she doesn't make it up as she goes along
-Her latest out this month is called “I’ve Got My Eyes on You,” and she has another book coming out in November

Any other MHC fans out there? Her books have gotten a little trope-y, but I still love reading them.

ONTD ORIGINAL: Top 15 Latina Queens of American Pop

$

I took it upon myself to create The Definitive™ ranking of all our Latina faves. TBH when I first thought about doing this I assumed I was gonna have a lot of options but it turned out I didn't and as a result I had to include some our flop Latina faves in the list. Never the less! what is behind the cut is nothing but FACTS and you will deal.

15. Paula DeAnda
Ok, I wasn't even going to originally include this X Factor reject (this spot was originally occupied by Kat Deluna) but then I remembered Walk Away was that bop to all the cholitas at my school and I knew I had to add her because that song is iconic.

14. Julia Michaels
She's written a few bops for other artists. She was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys. She's released some of her own little tunes that charted well. I'm actually not that big of a fan of ha but she's had some notable success and since I had slim pickings for this list due to #racism I honestly had no choice but to include her.

13.Becky G
This unproblematic reina should actually be higher on this list (like top 5 tbh) but ya'll stay sleeping on her and allowing her to flop. Binch brings the bops but you don't support her in english so you will have to deal with the consequences of those actions (which you will see later on in the list).

12. Christina Milian
IMO AM to Pm is That Bop™ and shit still goes fucking off. This reina kinda got lost in the shuffle of Amerie, Rihanna, Ciara, and all those other girls that came out in the mid-2000s, but Dip It Low is THAT song.

11. Sheila E
Probably the most iconic female percussionist in the game who got her start playing drums for Prince before becoming the original latina whisper queen

10. Camila Cabello
Honestly Becky G should be here but you dont support her but for some reason you support this heifer and allowed her to get a #1 song and album before the likes of Ariana, Demi, and Selena? Ya'll made her happen so you will deal with her success and her placement at #10. MOVING ON!

9. Lisa Lisa
The Latina who ruled the 80s and early 90s with her dance bops! Ha influence can be seen today as her songs are sampled by your faces (Nina Sky, BEP). QUEEN!

8. Irene Cara
Does your Latina fave has an Oscar because this one does! I.CON.IC.

7. Selena Gomez
Your current latina whisper queen. She's been struggling recently but she brought the electro pop bops with her faux band The Scene and gave us sexed up r&b kitten with Revival, the Stripped of 2015.

6. Demi Lovato
The heiress to the Latina with powerhouse vocals throne, while Demi is probably more known for bringing feminism to the mainstream, she also brought us Tell Me You Love Me, the Stripped of 2017!

5. Gloria Estefan
Arguably the OG Latina pop superstar. Everything your latina faves did, Reina Gloria Estefan did first!

4. Linda Ronstadt
This binch sang it all and is the ORIGINAL Latina queen to serve Vocals™. She did country. She did jazz. She did rock. She did r&b. She did ranchera. This queen was the highest paid female musician in the 70s and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

3. Jennifer Lopez
The Latina Whisper Queen of the early 2000s JLo was That Binch™ during her prime and even though her star has dimmed, she is arguably still the #1 Latina in the game.

2. Selena
Her legacy in the Spanish language market aside, Dreaming of You is still the only predominately Spanish language album to go #1, had the 2nd biggest debut at #1 for 1995 (only beat by some Michael Jackson album), and at the time had the second biggest first week sales for a female artist (2nd only to Kween Janet). Your monolingual fave could never tbh!

1. Christina Aguilera
Who else but Legend X? She brought you hit singles. She brought you hit albums. She brought you the original Stripped™. She brought you bops. She brought you looks. She brought you Grammys. She brought you octaves while you fave brought you whispers. Her voice is the manifestation of slain Incan warriors and you will honestly deal.

"Watch How a Pop Hit is Made" - Zedd, Maren Morris, & Grey's 'The Middle'

$

The New York Times' Diary of a Song series chronicled the making of 'The Middle' by Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey. The video won't embed, but you can watch it HERE

How did the song come to be?

  • The Monsterz and Strangers, a production and songwriting team from LA, made produced a demo of the song

  • Sarah Aarons, a songwriter from Australia (who also wrote Zedd's Stay), wrote lyrics, and sang them over the Monsterz/Strangers demo

  • They really liked it what they came up with, and sent the demo to bigger producers. Grey picked it up, added onto the production, and sent it to Zedd to finalize

  • Zedd started looking for a vocalist; he essentially wanted someone who sounded exactly like Sarah (the songwriter) but more polished

  • 14 singers sent in vocal demos. The video plays six of them (per ATRL/Reddit, they're (in order): (Anne-Marie, [second singer unknown], Ryn Weaver, Tove Lo, Charli XCX [i love her but LOL], Zara Larsson)

  • They almost gave up but heard Maren Morris's demo and chose her because she 1. sounded the most like the original songwriter and 2. thought she would be an original choice because she's a country singer

TL;DR - Zedd did like 0 work on the song but gets top billing

MOVIES
THE DEVIL AND FATHER AMORTH
William Friedkin's new film, The Devil and Father Amorth, is now out in a limited release!

  • In the short clip, Friedkin says that the purpose of The Exorcist film was the mystery of faith, based on something that was said to have happened.

  • He also discusses how in the film, he tried to rationalize what was going on, and that if it was demonic possession, then it was directed at the priest losing his faith, and not Regan.

A much longer interview (approx 30 minutes) with William Friedkin can be found here. In the interview, Friedkin discusses his opinion on the exorcism case that spawned the novel The Exorcist and the subsequent film.

The Atlantic's review of The Devil and Father Amorth is worth a read!

THE CURED
Ellen Page's new film, The Cured, has just been released in Ireland (where it was filmed) and it's getting critical acclaim.

  • It's "David Freyne’s ingenious, sombre debut"

  • The film is about a cure for flesh-eating zombies, giving them reentry into society. Ellen Page plays a widow whose brother is one of the cured.

  • Also stars Sam Keely and Tom Vaughan Lawlor.

Some highlights:

  • He discusses not being a fan of horror, but thought that the film's premise of being set at the end of the outbreak, rather than the beginning, was "clever."

  • A former snob horror, he now says, "I'm in total awe of people who work a lot in that genre, because of the intensity that's required, you're kind of at the extreme all the time."

  • He'll also be in Avengers: Infinity War, playing Ebony Maw, an extraterrestrial member of Thanos' Black Order.

Filmmaker Andy Nyman recently shared what may be his favorite review yet of the film. It's a 7 minute long review, enjoy!

ONTD ORIGINAL: Rihanna's Albums Ranked

$
0
0

Because I'm a selfless individual, I took it upon myself to educate you on which Rihanna albums are good and which ones are trash. Behind this cut are all 8 of Bad Gal RiRi's ranked from worst to best. No need to thank me, I do it because I love you all

8. Music of the Sun

It's trash. Delete everything but Pon De Replay from your iTunes.

7. A Girl Like Me

This is basically a better version of her debut, which isn't like a big compliment but when your first album is trash you have no where to go but up. SOS is a bop and Unfaithful succeeds because its a slow jam that gives the cholas what they want. Kisses Don't Lie and PS (I'm Still Not Over You) should've been singles but for some reason her flop label (Jay Z) chose We Ride and Break It Off.

6. Unapologetic

Ok, she won a Grammy for this album and it was her first to go #1, but it ain't nothing special especially compared to the majority of her other outputs. This album comes off as basically a lesser version of Talk That Talk. Pour It Up goes off, and call me trash but I fucking love Phresh Out the Runway and Right Now. I know a lot of ya'll prolapse ya bussies for Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary, but it just doesn't cut it for me. Like this album seems hella #reductive.

5. Loud

Coming off Rated R this album was seen as the return of pop Rihanna. This album brought out all the #iconic singles. Only Girl in The World. Whats My Name. S&M. Cheers (Drink to That). Again, I'm trash so drag me for fucking loving California King Bed. This song is basically a better version of her first two album. Like if this were her debut none of us would've though she was gonna be a one hit wonder.

4. Talk That Talk

After that little interlude Rihanna gave us with Loud, this album was her return to the hard and grimy pop r&b. Aside from the club bangers she delivered with We Found Love and Where Have You Been, she gave us probably one of my (problematic) favorite Rihanna tracks with the Birthday Cake Remix. This is also notable for being the first album which Rihanna started her trend of half ass promo.

3. Good Girl Gone Bad

This album is basically a greatest hits album. Before she came at us with #umbrella and #bob, Rihanna was just another random pop girl who gave us a few bops a la Ciara and Christina Milian. This is the album where she came for Beyonce's wig and nearly snatchedT it from ha!

2. Rated R

This is arguably the most important album of Rihanna's career. Sure it didn't give us a shit tone of hits as GGGB did, and sure it didn't sell as much. I remember being in the Russian Roulette radio premier post on ONTD and how we were all pissed as fuck binch gave us a fucking ballad and not a fucking bop. BUT!!! this was the first album Rihanna had significant creative control over and you can tell. The sound and aesthetic she presented is reflected in the albums that follow this one (aside from Loud which makes it stick out like a sore thumb) and this is why I personally consider this her most influential album.

1. Anti

This is a masterpiece. A lot of people argued Rihanna was nothing more than a singles artist and this is the album that made all the haters back off! Anti is the album she's been trying to make since Rated R. Its no coincidence this album took the longest to make (released 4 years after Unapologetic). The wait was worth it because from start to finish this album is a revelation.
