The Ready Player One panel at WonderCon was a packed house on Saturday. The panel started with a video collage of Spielberg’s greatest hits from Jaws to Jurassic Park to Minority Report.
The panelists, which included actors Tye Sheridan, Lena Waithe, Ben Mendelsohn, Philip Zhao, and Win Morisaki, also discussed their favorite Spielberg films and what it was like working with the director. Sheridan prefers E.T. while Cooke has love for Temple of Doom. Waithe says she loves The Color Purple, but says Jurassic Park as her fave. Zhao and Morisaki go for Adventures of Tin Tin and Catch Me If You Can respectively.
Among the stories told, Pak shared one particular story of a certain Star Wars director visiting the set.
“George Lucas showed up on set and gave Spielberg a hard time shooting on digital. Watching the two of them was like watching two 10-year-old friends arguing.”
Tom Cruise showed up at set too, apparently, and poor Olivia was super embarrassed. “We were shooting in our MoCap suits, and I blacked out kind of, and I know I bowed to him like a servant.”
But working with Spielberg was best encapsulated by the film’s star, Sheridan:
“He’s a child — he’s a film nerd.That’s why there’s so much camaraderie among all characters.”
