Founded in 2012, A24 is still a fairly new film production/distribution company, but they have been keeping themselves busy since their inception. Many of their releases have been either award-winning (
Moonlight, Room), award nominated (
Lady Bird,
The Florida Project) or critically acclaimed (
A Ghost Story,
The Lobster), and if you're making an independent film in 2018, it's safe to say that A24 purchasing your film would be an incredibly desirable outcome.
So, what's coming up for A24?
They just acquired a horror movie spec script called
Bodies Bodies Bodies, from the author of everyone's favorite essay "Cat Person", Kristen Roupenian. This is the first time that A24 has purchased a spec script, and it will be interesting to see what kind of talent that they can attract while they develop the project.
The company also just acquired the rights for
Never Goin' Back, a film that debuted at Sundance and will be featured at SXSW. First time writer and director Augustine Frizzell's comedy centers around two best friends trying to escape their waitressing jobs in Texas. The film stars Maia Mitchell, Cami Marrone, and Kyle Mooney, and received seemingly mixed reviews at Sundance.
A24 recently started a podcast (just like every other person in the world) and their first guests are pretty good gets: writer/directors Barry Jenkins and Greta Gerwig.
The podcast description from Apple: "A conversation between the writers/directors of Moonlight and Lady Bird. Topics covered include: Elena Ferrante, medieval triptychs, things that make Greta uncomfortable as a viewer, shooting through fog machines, the skirts of Isadora Duncan, fast-talking ladies, Grey Gardens, the possibility of a giant bad mess, budgetary constraints, Sacramento, the special birthday plate, and the YMCA aerobics class on 14th Street where Greta discovered her calling."
