Famous Hollywood acting coach Lesly Kahn has gained criticism after a tape of her telling a non-Latina student to pose as Latina to have a better chance of booking jobs and an agent. She told the student in part:

"Just the fact that your name is Rosa Ramirez is gonna get you a meeting. … So you might try it. … Go to the headshot shop and tell them you’re Latin. Wear something f*cking red. Wear some f*cking sparkly earrings. Change your goddamned name, and let’s just do an experiment."

She has "apologized" after the backlash.

Armie Hammer Goes After Journalist Anne Helen Petersen

ICYMI: Anne Helen Petersen wrote a ~hotly debated~ article questioning why Hollywood keeps trying to make Armie Hammer happen a few months back, resulting in him flouncing off of twitter.

Today, Anne Helen Petersen wrote a series of tweets, in NO WAY criticizing Jennifer Lawrence herself, but rather the writing of a really boring/bog standard female celeb interview she did for Vanity Fair where she's praised for being real because she picks up her dog's poop instead of making her BFF Laura do it. Which for whatever reason led to this exchange (3 months and 1 day since the Buzzfeed article war originally published btw) as captured by LA Times jounalist Amy Kaufman:

Also note she in no way mentioned Armie's name, or tagged him in anything. So he just decided to do this.

Why Taylor Kitsch is the most charming man on Instagram

Anne Helen Petersen, who has taken to eviscerating the likes of Armie Hammer and Justin Timberlake as of late, brings you this piece on why Taylor Kitsch joining Instagram is giving his career a whole new spin.

Without a publicist or a team managing him and years of refusing to join the world of social media he is giving fans a glimpse into his childhood, hockey background, photography, charitable work, the fact that he actually watches ice dancing, and a reminder that he is basically Tim Riggins, which also makes him incredibly funny.

A retrospective on his career and why straying away from roles that ignored his charm and surprising humor left him trying to crawl out of a failed launch as the next leading man.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark

A masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer—the elusive serial rapist turned murderer who terrorized California for over a decade—from Michelle McNamara, the gifted journalist who died tragically while investigating the case.

"You’ll be silent forever, and I’ll be gone in the dark."

For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website TrueCrimeDiary.com, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.

The Tangled Lands

Khaim, The Blue City, is the last remaining city in a crumbled empire that overly relied upon magic until it became toxic. It is run by a tyrant known as The Jolly Mayor and his devious right hand, the last archmage in the world. Together they try to collect all the magic for themselves so they can control the citizens of the city. But when their decadence reaches new heights and begins to destroy the environment, the people stage an uprising to stop them.

In four interrelated parts, The Tangled Lands is an evocative and epic story of resistance and heroic sacrifice in the twisted remains surrounding the last great city of Khaim. Paolo Bacigalupi and Tobias Buckell have created a fantasy for our times about a decadent and rotting empire facing environmental collapse from within—and yet hope emerges from unlikely places with women warriors and alchemical solutions.

Everything Is Horrible and Wonderful: A Tragicomic Memoir of Genius, Heroin, Love, and Loss

The space between life and death is a moment.
But it will remain alive in me for hundreds of thousands of future moments.

One phone call. That’s all it took to change Stephanie Wittels Wachs’ life forever..

Her younger brother Harris, a star in the comedy world known for his work on shows like Parks and Recreation, had died of a heroin overdose. How do you make sense of such a tragic end to a life of so much hilarious brilliance?

In beautiful, unsentimental, and surprisingly funny prose, Stephanie Wittels Wachs alternates between her brother’s struggle with addiction, which she learned about three days before her wedding, and the first year after his death, in all its emotional devastation. This compelling portrait of a comedic genius and a profound exploration of the love between siblings is A Year of Magical Thinking for a new generation of readers.

A heartbreaking but hopeful memoir of addiction, grief, and family, Everything is Horrible and Wonderful will make you laugh, cry, and wonder if that possum on the fence is really your brother’s spirit animal.

Hello Stranger

Dr. Garrett Gibson, the only female physician in England, is as daring and independent as any man—why not take her pleasures like one? Yet she has never been tempted to embark on an affair, until now. Ethan Ransom, a former detective for Scotland Yard, is as gallant as he is secretive, a rumored assassin whose true loyalties are a mystery. For one exhilarating night, they give in to their potent attraction before becoming strangers again.

As a Ravenel by-blow spurned by his father, Ethan has little interest in polite society, yet he is captivated by the bold and beautiful Garrett. Despite their vow to resist each other after that sublime night, she is soon drawn into his most dangerous assignment yet. When the mission goes wrong, it will take all of Garrett’s skill and courage to save him. As they face the menace of a treacherous government plot, Ethan is willing to take any risk for the love of the most extraordinary woman he’s ever known.

Skin in the Game

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Black Swan, a bold new work that challenges many of our long-held beliefs about risk and reward, politics and religion, finance and personal responsibility

In his most provocative and practical book yet, one of the foremost thinkers of our time redefines what it means to understand the world, succeed in a profession, contribute to a fair and just society, detect nonsense, and influence others. Citing examples ranging from Hammurabi to Seneca, Antaeus the Giant to Donald Trump, Nassim Nicholas Taleb shows how the willingness to accept one’s own risks is an essential attribute of heroes, saints, and flourishing people in all walks of life.

As always both accessible and iconoclastic, Taleb challenges long-held beliefs about the values of those who spearhead military interventions, make financial investments, and propagate religious faiths.

Latest Oscars anon voter gets to the point, loves 'Darkest Hour', figures 'Shape of Water' will win

$

This Academy voter - a producer - did not beat around the bush. Went straight to the point not necessarily about who they would vote for, but those they figured were locks so it's like 'meh fuck it, I'll vote the same.' Since THR's taking their sweet time to post their honest ballots this week, Indiewire's doing a solid.

Before I get to the breakdown, this person gets fucking honest about how Academy voters are lazy as hell and don't go out and see movies. Hence why the likes of Denzel Washington or Meryl Streep keep. Fucking. Getting. Nominated. For. Mediocre. Performances.

Best Picture: legit says for the nominated films are 'the bar is medium high,' and that the movies are fine, but not amazing (except The Post which is dullsville). Having said this, this producer contrarily goes for yet another British generic period piece 'Darkest Hour' as their top pick. They expect 'The Shape of Water' will win anyway, and can't imagine Three Billboards ("the movie about racist cops") to win, especially since it didn't get the director nod (they say, and I quote, that this is 'not Argo').
Screenplays: Like the WGA wins, they presume 'Get Out' will get original, and 'Call Me By Your Name' gets adapted.
Best Director: Expects Guillermo del Toro as a lock for the win, but thinks Greta Gerwig has a chance given her PR team?
Best Actor: Verbatim: "Gary Oldman is a lock."
Best Actress: Expects it to be Frances McDormand, but can see Sally Hawkins or even Margot Robbie maybe possibly slipping in.
Supporting Actor: Assumes Rockwell is a lock, but thinks there could be an upset with well-loved Willem Dafoe.
Supporting Actress: Assumes Allison Janney's flashy role will get her the gold.

More tech/craft choices at the source. Also fuck this person for blindly just picking Oldman because he's a lock. Contrarian all around.

*Bachelor Nation, a new behind the scenes book by LA Times writer Amy Kaufman out March 6th, details some of the pre-selection process on The Bachelor.

*Contestants are asked questions about things such as if they have ever experienced out of body experiences, could they kill someone, do they think they can control things with their mind.

*The show claims the contestants undergo a rigorous background psychological testing and anyone appearing imbalanced is eliminated, but we've all seen the show.

*The contestants also undergo medical tests, including tests for STDs. Anyone with an STD is immediately eliminated. Herpes is the most common STD that gets contestants eliminated. In many cases, the first time they are hearing they have herpes is from a Bachelor producer.

How dare this book come out the day *after* the most dramatic finale in the history of The Bachelor so we can't discuss it in the viewing thread????

About Dylan Farrow's abuse allegations against Woody Allen :
Sarsgaard said "I mean, I believe people when they say -- you know, I was assaulted or I was molested or something like that, because I don’t think you really have any other choice. Because if we start not believing people, it’s a slippery slope."

Daniels said "I believe Dylan Farrow."

If they'd work with Allen again :
Sarsgaard said "no"

Daniels said "That one’s hard. It’s a difficult decision because of Purple Rose of Cairo. That movie will always be a great experience, a great movie for me. And he will always be a great American filmmaker and I got to work with him at the age of 30 and it changed my life."

Tatiana Maslany will be making her off-Broadway debut in the premiere of the Tracy Letts (aka the dad from Lady Bird) play Mary Page Marlowe at Second Stage's Tony Kiser Theater this summer. The play is being directed by Lila Neugebauer, who recently directed the incredible Sarah DeLappe play The Wolves at Lincoln Center, and is about an accountant from Ohio.

The cast of The Boys in The Band, the revival of the 60's era play that opens on Broadway in April, is putting in a lot of promo work already. Cast members Jim Parsons, Andrew Rannells, Zachary Quinto and Matt Bomer are on the cover of T Magazine's Men's Style Issue.

In conjuction with the cover, each cast member read aloud works by queer poets, curated by queer poet Danez Smith.

Here is cast member Michael B. Washington reading an excerpt from one of the selected poems. The rest of the ridiculously hard to embed videos are accessible via the link above.

Star Wars: Rebels Series Finale Trailer

$

0

– The series finale of Star Wars: Rebels is coming on March 5th. Featuring the final three episodes of season four.
– The last few episodes have contained enormous stakes and moments, filled with character sacrifices and returns as the show moves closer and closer to the time period of A New Hope.
– Last nights episodes changed the way we think about the Force and featured the returns of popular characters. If you don't want to be spoiled, and you don't, refrain from reading this next part. No, really, back away now. I'll wait. You'll be glad you did. Good? Okay.
Ezra and crew travel across Lothal to visit its Jedi temple, only tofind the Empire has gotten there first. Out of Palpatine's desire to uncover the secret inside and control it, they force Ezra to help them, as he's the only one there with the power to open it. He does so and finds an infinite black space, marked only by thin white lines, filled with voices. Voices of Anakin Skywalker, Ben Kenobi, Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, people from the past – but then it shifts to Ben talking to Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia – voices from the future. We then hear other voices like Rey and Kylo Ren.

Ezra learns that this Jedi temple is a gateway to all of time and space, which is why Palpatine wants to control it. Journeying back inside, Ezra hears the fight between Ahsoka Tano and Darth Vader in the season two finale, reaches back in time, and saves her from the falling debris of the temple. After the finale two years ago, it was unclear whether or not Ahsoka survived the encounter, as a brief image of her followed by an owl overhead was shown among the collapsed ruins. So, time travel exists in Star Wars through the power of the force.

Emperor Palpatine makes his return and tries to capture them both, and amidst the battle, Ezra and Ahsoka return to their original times before entering the temple, but not before he tells her to find them. Ezra then sinks the temple underground, making it inaccessible for now, and everyone is captured. Did Ahsoka always die before being saved, or did Ezra always save her? Does this mean Force Ghosts can exist at any point in time? What will be the consequences of Ezra's actions?

– Dave Filoni said in an interview that he's pretty satisfied with how they've ended the show. Unlike The Clone Wars (screams in agony) they got to end it on their own terms.
Lucasfilm is reportedly working on another series set post-ROTJ. Filoni said they're always working on more stories in other mediums and we'll soon learn what that is. Honestly Rebels and The Clone Wars are so far ahead of anything in the sequels or prequels so please continue to save us Filoni we're suffering out here and the cause of death is bad-writing.gif

ONTD, are you ready for the end of Rebels? What do you think will happen and how do you feel about the last season?

The Token: Popular 90s black actors talk about being the only black actor on a 'white' show

-90s actors Phil Morris, Biance Lawson, Vanessa A. Williams, Markus Redmond, Kenn Michael, Kim Coles, Tangi Miller, and Shaun Baker discuss their experiences in tv where often times they were the token black character.

-Phil Morris talks about having dinner with Aaron Spelling & Darren Star wherein he told them that they needed more black actors on their show. They told him that it was all casting! They would love to have him on the show! They would write a role for him! When he went out for a role on the show later on he was informed that he wasn't right for it and that they wanted a white actor.

-Bianca Lawson was originally offered for the role of Cordelia Chase on BTVS but turned down the role to star in a black sitcom 'Goode Behavior' (that lasted for 23 episodes) where the producers had kept their word and wrote her a part for the series. She came back to Buffy to play the Vampire Slayer known as Kendra. She hoped that the role would last longer but it ended up only being a 4 episode stint. Being the first black actress on Buffy and Dawsons Creek never really occurred to her when she was younger.

-Vanessa A. Williams who was in the first season of Melrose Place speaks about sitting down with Darren Star and asking him to change her characters reaction to the LA riots who originally distanced herself from the black community.

-Shaun Baker talks about his experience on the set of VIP where he was a full time cast member. In his history of acting if they couldn't "find" a black stunt double for action scenes they would have the white stunt doubles don black face. For VIP they stated that they couldn't find a black circus performers to stunt for a scene he was to be in. He refused to have a white performer pretend to be black and demanded to be written out of the scene if they couldn't find a black performer for the stunt. They ended up writing him out of the scene.
