Joaquim Phoenix is playing John Callahan, a quadriplegic cartoonist, musician, and artist in Gus Van Sant’s film “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot”.
Van Sant addressed the controversy :
“This often comes up with all kinds of lead roles — who are the people playing the lead roles, do they have anything in common with the role itself? I definitely would have used a particular person that was quadriplegic if they were the right actor. A significant part of the story is before the incident, so to do that would have meant completely changing the story, because that’s a major part of the story — before and after the accident.”
“It comes up with so many roles, especially gay roles. Having Sean Penn was one of the more obvious ones. A person with a particular C5-C6 quadriplegia that John had is very specific, so it would be very hard to do. There was a sort of issue of what John wanted and I think, honestly, if I’d suggested it to John, he would have said, ‘Fuck no.’ Because he wanted the most famous person in the world to play him, which was Robin Williams — he couldn’t wait.”

Pussycat Dolls: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
With the impending announcement of a full blown Pussycat Dolls reunion, let's take a look at what the various members have been up to in the past decade! If, like most of the general public, you had no idea which one was which aside from Nicole and Melody or even how many there were, use this as a guide for when they're making the rounds performing their old slut bops on X Factor and Good Morning America.
NICOLE SCHERZINGER
The Queen Doll who sang over 95% of the songs, and who mastered the art of harmonizing with multiple backing tracks of herself live, her plan to ditch PCD to go solo in 2007 flopped epically and she had to go crawling back to the group for another couple years. She has since released a couple albums to moderate success... in the UK. She's dabbled in acting (Men in Black 3, Moana) and has competed in various reality shows, but is best known as a judge on the UK version of the X Factor - she's responsible for THAT moment where Rachel Crow broke down in tears on stage following elimination which is now a beloved gif.
MELODY THORNTON
Called Baby Doll due to being the youngest, she's the one who sorta sang by crashing a few songs with her wailing ad-libs during the fade out. You might remember her from the subtle yet nuanced performance she did at the 2006 American Music Awards. The good sis Melody was always stirring shit with her barely concealed rage at being forced into Nicole's shadow, but after PCD disbanded she's barely worked on music, having released a (free) mixtape in 2012 and that's about it. To pay the bills she's done a slew of UK reality shows with the most random themes, like being taught how to sing opera and going on dates.
CARMIT BACHAR
The Foxy Doll, or the one you could immediately pick out due to her fluorescent red hair. She was a member of the Pussycat Dolls since 1998 starting with the burlesque troupe, and the veteran left in 2008 to barely any notice for a solo career. You could sometimes hear her doing a harmony here and there on the odd PCD song. She's been part of music projects that have released EPs, but has yet to release an actual solo album. She does a lot of charity work for cleft palates, a condition that she herself was born with and has received more than a dozen childhood surgeries for, so think about about the next time y'all make comments about her face.
JESSICA SUTTA
Known as Pin-up Doll because of her love and emulation of 50's style models (???), she used to be an actress, playing Megan Fox's drugged out sister in a low rent Swedish soap opera called Ocean Ave back in 2003. After Carmit left, Jess suffered the indignity of being forced to become her doppelganger by dyeing her hair red which speaks to how interchangeable these chicks were treated if they weren't Nicole. After she broke her rib on tour, management ditched her while she was in recovery and left her stranded in LA yikes. Music-wise, she's become the dark horse (dark cat?) of the group, having sustained an EDM/house/club music career that continues to chart in the niche market to this day.
ASHLEY ROBERTS
The Angel Doll because she's blonde and white I guess, she was the one you could never tell from the OTHER blonde in the group. She's relocated to the UK and has made the typical D-list celeb progression there, having competed on reality shows, then become a presenter for various programs (including Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway), and finally achieved a solo album that was released in 2014.
KIMBERLY WYATT
The blonde member you DID recognize because she was always putting her damn leg up over head as a party trick; she also looked like that up above for a hot minute, which helped to set her apart. She released an album in 2011 as part of a music duo called Her Majesty & The Wolves, which is actually pretty good if you like Black Eyed Peas reject tracks. She has ALSO made her fortune in the UK, competing on reality shows and is currently focusing on dance.
ASIA NITOLLANO
The almost seventh Doll, the former single teenage mom won the CW reality show Search For The Next Doll, but promptly left without ever actually joining, ostensibly for a solo career that has yet to materialize. The very few interviews that exist of her talking about WHY she left are vague, but point to something else that she probably can't talk about legally. She was a cheerleader for the NY Knicks, and is currently the creative director and resident choreographer of the restaurant Sushi Roxx. OBLIGATORY: Melissa R should have won!
KAYA JONES
The OG seventh Doll, she left the group after the first music video for PCD was filmed, though her background vocals can be found on the first album (not like you'll notice tho). In late 2017, she made claims that the Pussycat Dolls operated like a prostitution ring for entertainment execs, with Robin Antin as some kind of pimp. She is a die hard Trump supporter, and joined the (sigh) National Diversity Coalition for Trump... as their Native American Ambassador. No records of her claimed Apache heritage exists, surprisingly enough.
CLAUDE RACINE
Speaking of seventh Dolls - this French-Canadian dancer is the seventh dancer in the Don't Cha video. She vied for a spot in the group with Kimberly, but management decided they only needed one pure dancer to guide
ROBIN ANTIN
Did you know the Pussycat Dolls producer, choreographer, and possible pimp was ALSO a member herself? Back when the format was up to a dozen Dolls doing the burlesque routines, she acted as one of the dancers with a turned off mic, and certainly did not stick out one bit. Once they whittled down the number of bodies they wanted in the group, she relegated herself to her current maven status. She's responsible for Girlicious, so let's give her that at least.
