Riverdale Roundup: Ep 10 Promo, Creator Interview and More

$

The show's not coming back until January, but there was still a promo for the next episode. Schools merge! Betty's brother! Cheery music!

---
RAS opens his mouth and noise comes out

-If you were hoping this was some weird elaborate ploy where the REAL BLACK HOOD is still out there, don't hold your breath. “I think the Black Hood saga, as we’ve been playing it, is over. There’s still going to be a lot of fallout from the Black Hood, though, to play." Apparently lots of skeletons and revelations about Riverdale's mob justice past

-Janitor Flopson picked Betty because apparently he believed their mutual inner darkness reflected off each other and blah blah blah. They'd meant to introduce him earlier, but they're basically shit at pacing and plotting and kept putting off his intro

-Love triangle alert: “love triangle is the essence of the Archie comics, and it’s sort of always bubbling underneath. It’s something that we are going to play a little more aggressively in the second half of the season, but hopefully in a way that is unexpected and a twist.”

-There will be a new mystery when the show comes back, but it probably won't be as heavy, and the show will go back to being about stuff that happens at school like romance and shenanigans and teen civil war fueled by class/economic divide

-Also claims that Kevin, Cheryl, Josie, and Toni will be more prominent in the back half of the season, but I'm already calling bullshit on that

---

Madelaine was interviewed while on the red carpet at the GQ Men of the Year Awards and had this to say about her character: “There’s not a lot of representation of bisexual characters on television, so I’m happy to be able to join the gang.”

Mimi O'Donnell, Philip Seymour Hoffman's widow, reflects on his death

$

  • They met in 1999 in a work setting (she was a costume designer and he was directing a play)

  • Got together romantically shortly after 9/11

  • He was always upfront about the fact that he had been an addict when he was young and was very involved in AA

  • He was very family oriented and refused to spend more than two weeks apart from his family, with Mimi and the children often travelling with him when he worked

  • Can't point to one thing that triggered his addiction but does say she knew he was relapsing when he suggested that he might start drinking socially after spending their entire relationship sober and insisting she do the same to respect his sobriety

  • He started abusing opiods and other perscription drugs before moving on to heroin which was when she began fearing he was going to die

  • He went to rehab twice and Mimi had to move him out of the apartment they lived in while he transferred the bulk of his wealth into her name because they both knew he was unstable

  • During the final Hunger Games he withdrew even more and they made plans for him to go to rehab for a third time only for him to die shortly after he came home

  • His death was publicized only an hour after she first heard the news

  • Most of the well-meaning advice she got for coping with his death was awful (including many people telling her to take up running) and she only got through it for her kids

  • She and her three children are now able to talk about him without crying

20 Books You Must Read in 2018

Almost Love by Louise O’Neill

O’Neill’s first adult novel - after the searing Only Ever Yours and the shattering Asking for It - is as pointed and insightful as her YA work. In the present, Sarah is with Oisin, a warm, kind man. But she can’t get over Matthew, an older man she was in a relationship with when in her early 20s. Matthew kept Sarah a secret, and never gave her quite what she wanted, but love isn’t supposed to be easy, is it? Featuring a selfish, complicated, damaged protagonist, this is a depiction of obsessive love that will hit a nerve with all readers.

The Wicked Cometh by Laura Carlin

In 1831 Hester White is struggling to get by, when by chance she encounters the Brock family and is taken to their country seat. There, under the pretence of being uneducated, she forms a close bond with Rebecca Brock. The two find themselves drawn into the mystery of London’s rapidly disappearing poor, uncovering something truly wicked. The Wicked Cometh is Carlin’s debut, and she’s great at conjuring up an image of darkest 1800s London, while her female characters are both of their time while also being witty and modern.

(February 8)

Brit(ish) by Afua Hirsch

“Where are you from? No, where are you really from?” Those are familiar questions for people of colour living in Britain, Hirsch among them. In this highly personal look at race, Hirsch recounts her search for her identity - the daughter of a Jewish dad and a Ghanaian mum, Hirsch never felt like she quite belonged in England, yet moving to Ghana didn’t make her feel Ghanaian. Hirsch looks at what identity is, and how perhaps what it means to be British needs to be rethought.

(February 1)

Circe by Madeline Miller

Miller, the author of the award-winning The Song of Achilles, returns with the story of Circe, arguably best known as the witch who turned Odysseus’ men into pigs in Homer’s The Odyssey. In Circe, Miller gives depth and history to the title character, how it was she came to be on her island, and her struggles as an independent woman. The “heroes” of Greek myths - the gods, Odysseus and so on - get shoved to the side, as Miller brings to the forefront a fascinating, captivating female character. This is wonderfully detailed and well worth the more than five year wait since The Song of Achilles.

(April 19)

Kintu by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi

Kintu begins in 2004, with the death of Kusi Kamu, before taking us back to 1750 and Kamu’s ancestor, Kintu Kidda. On his way to pledge allegiance to the new leader of Buganda Kingdom, tragedy strikes, and Kintu unleashes a curse that will plague his family for generations. This is an epic in the vein of Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing (one of 2017's best books), blending both the history of a country - Uganda in this case - and the story of a family through the generations.

ABC Fires Johnny Iuzzini, Pulls Remaining Episodes of Great American Baking Show

Four more women recently accused celebrity chef and TV personality Johnny Iuzzini of sexual harassment and abuse. This doubles the amount of his accusers. Iuzzini denies any wrongdoing. He has been accused most recently of demanding sexual favors from a professional colleague in exchange for a job opportunity at Top Chef: Just Desserts, threatening a sous chef with violence for not using liquid nitrogen when making a batch of ice cream, and filming a woman without her consent during a consensual sexual encounter. In the last example, he had pulled out a camera while writer and sommelier Hannah Lee Selinger was partially undressed and intoxicated and started filming her without consent. When she objected, he suggested he could put a pillowcase over her head to preserve her anonymity (although he appeared to eventually stop filming after repeated objections).

The first four accusations came just before the new season of Great American Baking Show premiered last week. After the second wave of accusations, ABC fired Iuzzini and chose not to air the rest of the episodes.

    ABC issued the following statement:

“In light of allegations that recently came to our attention, ABC has ended its relationship with Johnny Iuzzini and will not be airing the remainder of The Great American Baking Show episodes. ABC takes matters such as those described in the allegations very seriously and has come to the conclusion that they violate our standards of conduct.”

    Celebrities react to Disney/Fox merger

    $
    0
    0
For background, refer to the prior post on the merger in general, and a post covering what it means for TV streaming. Now let's get to celebs cracking jokes, criticism and wishes for this fiendish union!

    Ryan Reynolds wins:

James L. Brooks, who co-developed The Simpsons, a Fox TV show, tweets out Matt Groening's (creator of The Simpsons) cartoon:

James Gunn, director and writer of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series:

The second tweet is a reference to Doop, one of the most wacktastic characters from X-Men. Doop is a mutated bean thingie that only speaks in Doopspeak, a floating extra-dimensional pocket, and is also bisexual. Shaking & crying at thought of Doop joining the MCU!

Judd Apatow responds to James Gunn:

I do have to note that the Murdochs have never been known to interfere editorially with Fox's entertainment side. This merger noticeably leaves out Fox News, and in fact loads the Murdochs up with more cash with which to expand their propaganda empire, which is exactly what Rupert Murdoch said he plans to do.

Comedian George Wallace has a similarly misguided take on it:

But back to the wacky crossovers celebs want to see! Here's Josh Gad:

Michael Chlikis, who played The Thing in what would turn out to be not-the-actual-worst Fantastic Four adaptation:

    Fuck off, Tyler Shields:

Let's end on a more positive note with Queen Gillian Anderson:
