ONTD Original: Reopening the Case for Christina Aguilera’s “Bionic”

$
0
0

Seven years ago, the 2010 Bionic Massacre was a merciless pop era in the media and in stan culture. Some considered it the beginning of the end of Xtina’s career. For true FANS of music, some consider it criminally underrated. Let’s take a look back on the events leading up to it and after and think: was it justified?

Beginnings
2007: Christina Aguilera was just finishing off her album campaign for “Back to Basics” and teased a new album in the works. She hinted it would be a 180 from B2B with a ‘futuristic style’. Towards 2008 it was a decade of her solo career, and she celebrated it with a greatest hits album. This introduced her 2008 VMA performance and new tracks to hint her next move.

A furturistic rework of her single “Genie in a Bottle” and Marlene Detrich’s “Falling in Love Again”

Other inspirations for her new album consisted of electronic music with the likes of Goldfrapp, The Prodigy, and Zero 7. Searching for that new sound, she later on she revealed working with indie artists Santigold, M.I.A., Peaches, Ladytron, and Zero 7’s member Sia Furler.

The New It Girl

2008: After showcasing a new *superhero look, people came across ALLEGED similarities to a newcomer: Lady Gaga. This was all due to common platinum blonde hair and bangs (wow what a biter!). With Gaga's sound and look, she had somewhat futuristic vibes in which Xtina was already attempting.
Gaga’s then-bff P*r*z H*lton with then-relevant celebrity gossip blog, this was the catalyst of the Xtina smearing campaign of comparing the two in any opportunity (where was Gaga during this bullying? #BeKind). But everyone was goo-goo for Gaga as she was rising on the charts. Xtina was the old, Gaga was the new.

The Bionic Massacre
2010: With fans hungry for new material and even convincing themselves Jonna Lee's viral marketing was a teaser, Christina finally released the lead single “Not Myself Tonight”.

Gaga, the supposed innovator of all fashion (in 2010)

Dare I say it was a bold song amidst the accusations of copying the “G.U.Y.” hitmaker. The music video release only fueled the fire in stan world with comparisons to "Bad Romance" and Xtina literally wearing an outfit Gaga had once wore

There was a direct reference to Madonna’s video “Express Yourself”. Guess who was later accused of plagiarizing this very song? Hmmm…

Confronted with this comparison and responding with possible shade, it eventually got to the point where Mrs. Aguilera had to address this in a [now deleted] post on her official website.

“I have absolutely nothing against Lady Gaga or any other female artist in this business. I think she is great, and I appreciate any woman fearless enough to go against the norm. She has earned her success with hard work and a clear focus and I have nothing but respect for that. There is room for all of us on everyone’s iPods.” - Christina Aguilera

The Album

Xtina goes dark-pop: "Birds of Prey” produced by Ladytron

After “Not Myself Tonight” flopped hard and the pvssy-poppin promo single “Woohoo” featuring then upcoming rapper Nicki Minaj, it seemed to the public that Aguilera had nothing up to par with her previous musical efforts like “Stripped”. Loaded with dated (give or take) dance tracks on the standard tracklist, there was a confusion as to where the “experimental” and “electronica” sound would be. Some noted out how she ALLEGEDLY used autotune for the song “Elastic Love”. Where was the soulful music?

”I Am” co-written with singer/songwriter Sia.

Dubbed the ‘heart of the record’, there were ballads with longtime collaborator Linda Perry and then fairly unknown singer Sia. These were the luscious and meaningful songs we know Christina for.

The indie collaborations were unfortunately pushed to the deluxe version of the album. Ladytron member Daniel Hunt had something to say about what happened with Christina’s initial vision:

"The way she played the album to me was her original vision. She was on the right track but the record label f**ked up everything, to be honest. All the good stuff got pumped into disc two. I think that if she would have done what she had in mind it would have been better. I also think that with what she had in mind she could have [sidestepped] all the kind of potential comparison with Lady GaGa which, you know, at the time it was that nightmare for her."
He added: "She would have done it in the smart way and she would have been renowned now, but her record label instead wanted to put her against [GaGa]."

The final single “You Lost Me” was released and was not able to save the era.

2011: It did not stop then. With an underperforming album came along with the lukewarm reviews of her debut lead acting role in the now cult-classic “Burlesque”, a divorce with her husband of 5 years, the infamous National Anthem flub at the Superbowl, bad press regarding to questionable spray tan oil leaking between her legs whilst performing a tribute at Etta James’ funeral, and weight gain... Christina hit rock bottom.

The Aftermath
2012: Failing to sell enough tickets for her Bionic tour, Xtina needed to try new endeavors. This lead to her now being sitting comfortably as singing coach on The Voice. She also released another album “Lotus”, which again is not up to par with the quality we know her for. #JusticeForYourBody

During this time she also did a few collaborations including Maroon 5 for “Moves Like Jagger”, earning a #1 spot, and A Great Big World for “Say Something", which earned her a sixth Grammy.

2013: Soon enough, Gaga hit up Xtina burying the hatchet calling for truce and #pop prosperity with a remix of “Do What U Want”. #promoteonlinekindness#bornthisway

The Verdict

^^It may have sounded silly but lbr, not a lot knew who Sia was aside from possibly knowing "Breathe Me". No denying Sia has raw talent that has sustained a modest career up until that point, but it seemed as though Xtina had lent a helping hand in bringing Sia into the mainstream world, who is now penning for popstars with the likes of Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Canadian songstress Carly Rae Jepsen.

Bionic in pop culture

Gaga sporting the #iconic#Bionic hairstyle as the role of The Countess on American Horror Story.

From one messy era to another: Katy Perry’s recent album cover ‘Witness’ has drawn comparisons to Bionic’s album cover.

Madonna called up M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj for MDNA (2012).

After Xtina's dumb AF copying accusations, poor execution, and personal hardships, music listeners have taken a chance on the album and admit Bionic is an underrated piece of work, especially looking at songs like "Monday Morning" and "I Am".

We are now awaiting Xtina's forthcoming album, will she #riseLotusrise?

Critics Trash "Look What You Made Me Do", Call it "Dead On Arrival" and "Self-Obsessed"

Critics are trashing Taylor's new single "Look What You Made Me Do" in their reviews of the song.
Many are calling the tune "self-parody" and "delusion and egomania."

Vulture slammed the UPS star's song "For all the serpent-themed hype leading up to the launch of the song, Swift's words lack venom, fangs, and smoothness. They have the consistency of wet flour...""As far as her archnemeses Kim and Kanye go, it’s completely impossible to imagine them doing anything but laughing, hard, at "Look What You Made Me Do." They've "made" Taylor Swift release the worst music of her career."

The New Yorker had this to say: "As much as she is clearly enjoying stepping into the role of the bad girl, this turn is still premised on victimhood. After all, the song isn’t called "Look What I Did." It is more of the same: Swift has been manipulating tabloid story lines—her relationships with famous men, her feud with Katy Perry—in her lyrics for years now. "I don't like your little games / Don't like your tilted stage / The role you made me play," she sings."

One critic slammed her saying "'Look What You Made Me Do' pits millions of largely white Swifties against a black man at a time when this nation is locked in a very real race war."

Pitchfork called it: "...Uncharacteristically un-nuanced, and when she slips in hilariously artless digs like "I don't like your tilted stage.."

NPR called it "Hot Topic Taylor" and "Sonically, this doesn't go anywhere — worth pointing out that thematically, it doesn't go anywhere, either! ... She squandered that chance to play the villain — she'd rather be the victim, which is a stale posture for her by now."

"She's got to have tits." - Anti-Objectification Hero James Cameron Talks about Female Characters

$

You might remember that James Cameron slammed Wonder Woman as an objectified icon and called the movie a step backwards. He's clearly an authority on that subject - let's look at the way he describes his Avatar character Neytiri.

6a0120a7e55e7c970b013480285ff8970c

Highlights:

  • Right from the beginning I said, “She’s got to have tits,” even though that makes no sense because her race, the Na’vi, aren’t placental mammals.”

  • We need fantasy icons. There's a certain geek population that would rather deal with fantasy women than real women. Let's face it: Real women are complicated.

  • We had a shot in which Neytiri falls into a specific position, and because she is lit by orange firelight, it lights up the nipples. That was good, except we’re going for a PG-13 rating, so we wound up having to fix it. We’ll have to put it on the special edition DVD; it will be a collector’s item.A Neytiri Playboy Centerfold would have been a good idea.”

Fun fact for your trivia nights: Cameron used to work as a prop builder and got his big break into Hollywood by creating a spaceship with boobs (for the movie: on 'Battle Beyond The Stars')!

battle-beyond-the-stars

B-movie legend Roger Corman was so impressed with Cameron’s design for a “spaceship with tits” that he asked him to direct Piranha II: The Spawning.

Wynonna Earp post-S2 finale interviews

$
0
0
Emily Andras sat with EW and The TV Junkies and discussed the S2 finale.

Highlights:

* Wynonna saying goodbye to her baby was the last scene Melanie filmed for the season, it was done it one take; she wasn't feeling well on set that day and gave birth 4 days later. They went back and forth on whether it'd be a girl or a boy, but in the end wanted to have an Earp women legacy. It's safer for everyone if they don't know where Gus and the baby are headed, but it'll make it harder for our people to find the baby as well. For Wynonna to realize the baby would have a better life away from her is a very real story for a lot of mothers and something they thought was worth telling.

* They considered making the baby half Revenant, but it's a genre story they've seen a lot. Ultimately they decided it should be more grounded and just be a human baby, who just happens to be the progeny of an Earp and a Holliday. Bobo isn't Waverly's father, but he insists she's his kin, so there's some relation there. She's not a Revenant, but we still don't know for sure if she's not something else. But Mama Earp showing up could shed some answers on it.

* We've seen Peacemaker turn blue before, in the S1 finale when Wynonna mercy kills Willa. Emily has an idea of why Peacemaker turns blue when it does, but wants to leave it open for fan speculation. She says it has something to do with the Earps in particular and choices they're making. One of the biggest mistakes Wynonna made this year was when she wanted to force Rosita to act as a guinea pig to test the serum and told her 'I promise I will shoot you last'. Rosita has done everything she can to keep going and tried to better herself and fight on, in the end she made a terrible, terrible choice. She's also half demon, we've seen Bobo, who was a good mad as Robert, be unable to fight those instincts. She's fully evil now, but Emily says Rosita is an interesting three-dimensional character and they'd love to see more of Tamara Duarte next season, so there's always hope.

* Jeremy seems to know things, to be able to tell things, if we rewatch S2, we'll see several moments where he has insight into people or knows things he couldn't have known naturally. About the love triangle- all doors are open, but things have evolved between the three of them, including Doc and Dolls becoming friends. They wouldn't want o force Wynonna to choose one over the other until she's ready, which is a big old mess Emily can't wait to unravel.

* It's shocking that Wynonna obviously knows where Mama Earp is, it's interesting that she seems to have some sort of intel, not only into Waverly's parentage, but also the demon Bulshar. Waverly had no idea where their mom was, it might be a problem when she finds out Wynonna knew all along.

Highlights:

* They knew they had to figure out a way to get the baby to safety, they weren't going to be a show that had a baby on screen, it wasn't feasible with Wynonna being the Earp heir and killing Revenants. It seemed consistent wit Wynonna's character that she'd be the type of woman who accidentally got pregnant, didn't have a lot of choices about what to do and then made the best choice by giving the baby a better life away from her. It's the ultimate selfless choice, if you truly think you cannot raise a baby on your own, in a healthy environment, to give it to someone who can. They didn't want to completely tie up Waverly's parentage storyline, because they think they still have a big story to tell about it and wanted to introduce Mama Earp. The scene where Wynonna tells Doc she named the baby after both their mothers moved crew members to tears, it was a moving, incredible scene.

* Emily cried at the end with Wynonna and Doc, but also when Wynonna was telling at Waverly that she's her sister and willing Peacemaker to fire. The scene encapsulates everything about the Earp sisters that she love. The pregnancy forced their hands and made them do a storyline you'd maybe hold off on until S6, but the audience for the most part trusted them, even if they weren't sure how it was going to work. Emily says she's interested in seeing how people think Doc reacted at the end, what feelings he was left with when they pulled away from him in the finale. She doesn't know if Doc and Wynonna will have the same reaction to giving the baby up. Doc went to hell when he died, he's kind of a mess, on top of that his girlfriend betrayed his baby mamma.

* They're looking forward to casting Mama Earp, Emily wants it to be Lucy Lawless, even if there's very little chance of it happening. In 2X05 when Waverly said the tentacle told her things and Wynonna had a reaction to her knowing her secrets, she thought Waverly was going to confront her about knowing where their mother was this whole time. Where is she, why did she leave, what part did Wynonna have in either making her leave or knowing where she is, why doesn't Waverly know- they'll go into it all in S3. There's always been this narrative that Mama Earp left her three little girls with a father who was kind of an alcoholic and not necessarily the best parent, now Wynonna is a mother who also has to give up her child, there are a lot of parallels that are really interesting. Wynonna might have a different take on her mom now that she's had to make such a difficult choice.

* Bobo calling Waverly 'kin'- it's an old-fashioned word that could mean a lot of things, it could mean family, it could mean 'of a kind', but it could also be Bobo once again screwing with everyone. Bobo is still around and may have answers. Waverly figuring it out will be a big part of S3. Nicole had Bulshar's ring and a folder on him and seems to be working with Dolls on it in secret.

* Rosita is a Revenant and is really stuck, she wasn't really part of the gang, her relationship with Doc was incredibly complicated, but the turn happened because Wynonna told her 'I'll shoot you last', not 'I'll protect you/I won't shoot you'. Rosita is a lot like Wynonna, she's a survivor and needs to keep going. She tried to better herself, she was made a Revenant by being caught in the crossfire, or so she says. Now she betrayed them and there'll be consequences, so she's on the run. Emily loves Tamara and would love to see her next season. They ended up falling in love with Varun, so they wrote more and more for Jeremy, they love him and his dynamic with everybody. He seems to know things he shouldn't be able to, there's the implication Black Badge didn't recruit him for his intellect, but for something else.

Original 'It' makeup artist speaks out on Tim Curry's Pennywise

$

  • Tim Curry's Pennywise was wholly designed by makeup artist Bart Nixon. He was also responsible for the other monsters in the film such as the werewolf and the skeleton in the lake.

  • Describes it as "a clown version of Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera"; ', that was a conscious aesthetic decision on my part, in terms of the shape of the head and the upturned nose and all that stuff."

  • Some rejected ideas included Pennywise being more kid-friendly for the first part and more gruesome and corpse-like for the part with the adults.

  • Wanted primary colors for Pennywise; bright red and blue, etc. "I wanted everything to be very stark and primary like a live-action cartoon."
