10 Most Cringe-Worthy Star Wars Moments

Star Wars, as a franchise in all its forms, has had its ups and downs; the epic highs of the Empire Strikes Back, to the “worst thing every made by a human” Attack of the Clones, and let us not forget that ill-judged Holiday Special.

There are numerous cringe-inducing moments associated with Star Wars, hough most of this list will be made up from Attack of the Clones, because it’s too hard not to punish such an awful film. This should not be surprising given its reputation as the worst in the series. One of the biggest criticisms of George Lucas is that he writes awkward dialogue and is poor with actors. I have included much from the prequels, though all his films are represented on the list (even Empire still has a moment that has made the list).

5. When Twins Kiss – Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

This is a slow-burn cringe moment, upon first viewing of Empire. It is a footnote in the development of the relationship between Leia and Han. We, as the viewer, still think that may be Luke and Leia could be the couple here, and Han will remain solo (sorry).

After the parentage of Luke is revealed later in the film, and then it is confirmed that Luke and Leia are twins. This becomes a super creepy and very cringe-worthy piece of cinema. The incest metre goes into overdrive, and now as an adult I have to fast forward it. Leia makes it worst with this line in Return of the Jedi, “I know. Somehow, I’ve always known!” Hold on, excuse me? So many questions and one awkward family reunion.

4. The Very Awkward & Creepy “Romance” Scenes On Naboo – Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

And we are back to Attack of the Clones. While most romance films can be sappy and boring. The guy at least often has some game, and you can believe that he earned the girl in the end. You are happy for him, as you see the relationship grow from a friendship to dating, or from mutual dislike to raw passion. There is a usual a strong link and arc presented on screen. In the romance arc of Attack of the Clones there is none of that… is just plain creepy! We even get some “creepy sex looks” from Anakin.

Poor dialogue and acting aside. This is one strange relationship. Anakin is always just staring at Padmé like he wants to rape her. This in fact makes her visibly uncomfortable, she even says so in the film. There is no chemistry between the two actors at all. Now let’s look at the dialogue,

“Anakin: From the moment I met you, all those years ago, not a day has gone by when I haven’t thought of you. And now that I’m with you again… I’m in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you – I can’t breathe. I’m haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating…hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me… what can I do? I will do anything you ask. [pause] If you are suffering as much as I am, please, tell me.”

Yet, somehow she falls for him. I have no idea how that works. The climax of this “love” story is the kiss on Naboo. Anakin begins saying to Padmé that, “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and irritating and it gets everywhere. Everything here is soft and smooth.”

Everything about these two feels wrong. Anakin is shown to be a self-centred and annoying prat who has no concept of how women work, or even how to talk to a woman. I am still puzzled about how this happened, why does Padmé loves him. He literally gave her no reason to do so in any of their time together, instead he gave her insane rants, ramblings about being a dictator and sex stares.

3. Greedo Shoots First – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (Special Edition)

Yes. The fact that has been changed is a big deal. I ask, is a good guy ending up as a good guy, as interesting as a ruthless smuggler ending up as a good guy. No! Lucas messed with the whole character’s back-story to retroactively appeal to younger audiences. Lucas may have actually missed the point of his own story; it doesn’t matter where you come from. It is what you do that defines you as a hero.

This a so cringe worth because of the poor editing, it looks shameful and dumb. It completely takes me out of the movie and kills all the tension that is meant to be in this scene. Also, this establishes Greedo as the worse bounty hunter ever! He misses at point blank range!

2. “Anakin, You’re Breaking My Heart” – Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

I don’t want to labour this point anymore, but this is the second worst piece of dialogue in Episode III. This scene suffers for all the same issues as the romance scenes on Naboo in Attack of the Clones. This time, however, we are less invested, the dialogue is worse and Anakin is creepier. I cannot this spell it out anymore.

1. Jar-Jar Binks – Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

“Mesa cause one, two-y little bitty axadentes, huh? Yud say boom de gasser, den crashin der bosses heyblibber, den banished?”- Jar Jar Binks

The above profound quote and video should highlight all the issues with this character. He is an annoying, and frankly racist character that only offends. The audience is given no reason to like him, he causes chaos everywhere he goes and he ruins every scene he is in by his presence in it.

He is not funny in any way so the character has no purpose. His shtick is quickly worn out, and by the end of Episode 1 you are exhausted at just how stupid this character is. In the sequel he is merciful trimmed out and rarely shown. The madness however continues, Binks is the most incompetent member of his species, and yet becomes a Senator on Coruscant. What? Why?

The screen time of this character is a total waste and unnecessary to the film as a whole. The Phantom Edit proved this. He is still the sole thing that embarrasses me about being a Star Wars fan. I cannot justify him, nor will I. This is as bad as the “Bat-Credit Card” in Batman & Robin.
