5 Seconds of Summer is promoting their upcoming release of their 2nd album, Sounds Good Feels Good. And they did an interview, talking about their background, mental health, you calling them ugly, and how the album is written to help young kids struggling with issues.
On Mental Health
- Michael took some time during their brief break this Summer to get help and this info leaked and his fans went nuts online, he admits its important to get it out there that there's nothing wrong with getting help, "I was fixing some problems with my mental health. I just saw a therapist on the break we had.”
Talks about criticism they recieved & 1D stans (basically, you all)
- When they opened for 1D they were excited but instead they got dumb criticism from 1D stans, "There were shitloads of people being like, ‘F— this band, these guys are all shit-ugly dipshits. What are they doing on tour with One Direction, my perfect babies?’ ”, which they dealt with by just getting on stage and playing the best live show they could/they don't care that they don't find them pretty cause they care about the music more.
Their background/why they became a band
“Our culture is working-class, like, f—ing violent. You can’t afford shit. You take public transport. You buy $5 McDonald’s meals. It’s just epic, depressed suburbia. I don’t think we ever verbally said we want to do this to get out of our shitty little town. But it was a thing we all kind of knew, and that’s why we stuck with it.”
The theme of the album
“No one is writing music that highlights what everyone is scared to talk about -- which is that everyone is sick and depressed these days. People our age, we all feel like shit about ourselves. We wake up and we look at our phones and there are a thousand opinions on who we are -- or what we are. It’s destructive.”
The drummer Irwin also once drew a butterfly on a fans wrist to help her from cutting herself there.
