Spike Lee Outraged by 'Django Unchained'

Spike Lee thinks Quentin Tarantino's new slavery revenge flick "Django Unchained" is the wrong thing.

The famed "He Got Game" director says he's boycotting the new movie because he finds it insulting.

"American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them," he wrote on Twitter.

The tweet came shortly after he told VibeTV he couldn't comment on the movie starring Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio because he decided not to see it.

"I can't speak on it 'cause I'm not gonna see it. I'm not seeing it," he said in a video interview.

"All I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors to see that film. That's the only thing I'm gonna say," he explained. "I can't disrespect my ancestors. I can't do it. Now, that's me. I'm not speaking on behalf of anybody but myself. I can't do it."

Lee, 55, even tangled with another Twitter user who took issue with his Holocaust comparison.

"The goal of the holocaust was death and destruction; the goal of American slavery was tobacco, indigo, rice, and cotton," a post from a user called Rogue Academic read.

"Like Slaves Didn't Die? What Kind Of Academic Are You? And George Washington Didn't Own Slaves Too?" Lee responded.

Tarantino, 49, has been the subject of Lee's ire before.

Lee criticized the "Pulp Fiction" director for his liberal use of the n-word in his third feature film, "Jackie Brown," a 1997 movie starring Samuel L. Jackson and paying homage to the blaxploitation films of the 1970s.

"I'm not against the word. And some people speak that way. But Quentin is infatuated with that word," Lee said of Tarantino in an interview with Variety.

"What does he want to be made, an honorary black man?" the "Do The Right Thing" director asked. "I want Quentin to know that all African-Americans do not think that word is trendy or slick."

‘Game of Thrones’ Is Named Year’s Most Pirated Show + 5 Ridiculous Pieces of Game of Thrones Merchan

Some fans of the HBO series “Game of Thrones” may not be willing to pay a premium-cable subscription fee to watch it, but short of besieging a fleet of ships with a magical explosive chemical they’ll do just about anything else to get their hands on it. “Game of Thrones,” the HBO fantasy drama adapted from George R. R. Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” novels, was the year’s most pirated show, according to the Web site TorrentFreak. TorrentFreak said that an individual episode of “Game of Thrones” had been illegally downloaded some 4.28 million times according to data compiled from BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing services and other sources (the particular episode that drew this many downloads was not specified).

The volume of piracy, TorrentFreak said, may result from the fact that HBO does not make its shows available through commercial video sites like Hulu or Amazon Prime, but only on its own online platform, HBO Go, which is available only with an HBO subscription. (HBO has said it does not plan to offer HBO Go as a standalone service in the United States.) Or it may be that viewers in international markets cannot wait for “Game of Thrones” to be broadcast in their countries, after it has already been shown in the United States. (TorrentFreak said that more than 80 percent of television piracy happens outside of the United States.)

Ranking second on TorrentFreak’s most-pirated list was the Showtime thriller “Dexter,” with 3.85 million downloads for a single episode, followed by the CBS comedies “The Big Bang Theory” (3.2 million) and “How I Met Your Mother” (2.96 million), and the AMC drama “Breaking Bad” (2.58 million).

Digital Spy review the Series Finale of 'Merlin'

$
0
0
"In a land of myth, and a time of magic, the destiny of a great kingdom rests on the shoulders of a young man. His name... Merlin!"

So we've heard those that now-iconic opening spiel for the last time, but how did we feel by the time 'The Diamond of the Day (Part 2)' had reached its climax? In short, we were moved, more than a little surprised and mostly satisfied.

Merlin's series finale picks up exactly where Saturday's episode left off - Arthur (Bradley James) and the knights are engaged in an epic bout with Morgana's forces, while Merlin - in full-on Emrys mode - races to the battlefront...

Looming over the scene, 'Emrys' unleashes his most powerful magic to date. Forget the much-mocked 'throwing enemies into a wall' theatrics; here, Merlin (Colin Morgan) rains down a storm of magic that devastates the enemy forces, white dragon Aithusa and even Morgana (Katie McGrath) herself.

But the battle is far from won. Impressively dark scenes follow as Merlin trawls through the littered corpses of his fallen foes and allies, while - in a lovely moment from Bradley James - Arthur realises that Mordred (Alexander Vlahos) is stalking towards him...

We expected some sort of 'out' for Arthur's death, so to see Mordred mercilessly run him through a mere six minutes into this episode blew our mind, just a little. It's a decent shock moment, but the unexpected speed with which this scene arrives also means that actor Vlahos - who's been fantastic this series and clearly has a bright future ahead of him - gets short shrift. Mordred's death is suitably dramatic but rather abrupt.

Yes, a wounded Arthur finds the strength to stand, striking down his tortured foe, and the battle is won, but the King has sustained a serious, possibly fatal, wound...

Merlin finds his friend, limp and lifeless, and carries him away from the battleground. Then, when Arthur wakes, Merlin finally, FINALLY confesses the truth about his magic.

Now, the reveal scene itself is everything you could want. Merlin's tearful confession and Arthur's reaction - ranging from incredulity, to shock, to disbelief at his own ignorance, to anger at his friend - are perfectly judged.

Our one niggle is this - why does Merlin confess now? He's had ample chance to do it many times throughout the course of this show's run - there have been times when revealing the truth would've saved his own life or the lives of others, and yet he picks this particular moment to tell Arthur all.

Yes, they're in a tight spot and all seems lost, but isn't that always the case on this show? You're left with the feeling that the reveal happens simply because this is the final episode.

But again, all that having been said, the execution of the scene itself is faultless and having it come early in this episode at least allows time to explore Arthur's reaction in a little detail.

We do also have to question though the likelihood of Gwen (Angel Coulby) guessing the truth about Merlin at the exact moment that the young warlock chose to confess the truth to her husband. Again, why now? Gaius (Richard Wilson) may have dropped a heavy hint at the battlefront, but Gwen's been given plenty of clues about Merlin before. Her sudden revelation here feels too convenient.

Speaking of Gaius, he's helping his ward care for Arthur - and who didn't love Arthur's frantic "He's a sorcerer!" followed by his quick realisation that Gaius knew the truth all along?

Feeling betrayed, the wounded Arthur spurns Merlin's help, but a fragment of Mordred's sword, forged in Aithusa's breath, is still lodged in his chest, and time is running out...

Arthur becomes increasingly embittered as his strength fades. "You've lied to me all this time," he spits at Merlin, upon witnessing another of his servant's impressive magical displays.

But the two men discover each other anew on their final quest to an ancient isle - their reminiscence about their first encounter was a nice moment, tying the entire series together.

There are many factors to Merlin's success, but a key part of it has always been the Merlin/Arthur dynamic - everybody loves a bromance - and this final episode devotes a pleasing amount of time to their relationship.

Two men sat in the woods, talking about their feelings, might not sound like the stuff that edge-of-your-seat drama is made of, but after five years of set-up and outright teasing, this is exactly the kind of pay-off that fans needed, and it works brilliantly.

Credit though to the Merlin team for not neglecting the supporting cast either - practically everyone's favourite character gets their moment in the sun. The ever-resilient Sir Leon (Rupert Young) steps up as Gwen's right hand, and Eoin Macken shines as the cocky Gwaine has his heart broken and leads his brother-in-arms Percival (Tom Hopper) on a foolhardy quest to confront Morgana, who's now a broken woman, shrieking and throttling her henchmen like a raven-haired Darth Vader.

The sorceress captures the two knights, torturing Gwaine to death off-screen in what is undoubtedly one of the episode's darkest and most moving moments.

Merlin and Arthur finally reach their destination, but - having forced the truth out of Gwaine - Morgana is waiting for them. She's no match for Merlin though, and the wizard strikes her down with Excalibur. It's perhaps a low-key exit for Katie McGrath's villain, but no less powerful for that.

Morgana is dead, but her assault has delayed our heroes too long and, after finally acknowledging Merlin's worth, Arthur dies. His final words to his friend - "Thank you" - are perfect.

Grief-stricken, Merlin summons the Great Dragon (John Hurt), who reveals that Arthur is indeed gone - there's thankfully no cheap reversal of his demise - but that he will also rise again, when Albion's need is greatest. A dark ending then, but one tinged with hope.

You can't please all of the people all of the time and there are inevitably things about the Merlin finale - chiefly the convenience of certain plot beats - that we have issues with.

We're also not sure about that very last scene - it's clear what the writers were trying to do, but the brief snatch of Merlin in the modern day just felt a little jarring after what had come before.

But this remains a fantastic series finale - the cast, led by the superb Colin Morgan, deliver fantastic final performances, the script is admirably dark and doesn't shy away from what is a difficult ending, and the show as a whole climaxes on an emotional high.

Having watched the show from the very start, we'll certainly miss Merlin - it's been a shining beacon of Saturday night TV for the past few years. To quote John Hurt's Great Dragon, it has been a privilege to know you, young warlock.

Since we're on a roll: Quentin Tarantino compares the War on Drugs to slavery

The "Django Unchained" director says the mass incarceration of black men is "slavery, through and through"

Iconic film director Quentin Tarantino believes that US drug policy, and the subsequent mass incarceration of African Americans, is comparable to pre-Civil War slavery. In an interview about his latest movie—Django Unchained, which documents the story of a freed slave, played by Jamie Foxx—Tarantino points out that the hierarchies of racial injustice have shifted but not wholly improved. “This whole thing of…this ‘War on Drugs,’ and the mass incarcerations that have happened pretty much for the last 40 years has just decimated the black male population,” says the filmmaker. “It’s slavery…it’s just slavery through and through, and it’s just the same fear of the black male that existed back in the 1800s.” He adds that the US prison system, which currently houses staggeringly disproportionate numbers of black men, mirrors the structure and appearance of slavery. “Especially having even directed a movie about slavery, and you know the scenes that we have in the slave town, the slave auction town, where they’re moving back and forth,” he says, “Well that looks like standing in the top tier of a prison system and watching the things go down. And between the private prisons and the public prisons, the way prisoners are traded back and forth.” African Americans throughout the US are 13 times more likely to face jail for the same drug-related offenses as white people, according to a 2011 statement by the NAACP; at 13% of the US population, they currently make up 53.5% of all imprisoned drug offenders, despite drug use being fairly evenly divided across racial lines.

The 10 Best ‘SNL’ Skits of 2012

$
0
0

Well, another year of SNL s come and gone. Unlike any other show on television, the skits of SNLhave the potential to sneak into the cultural consciousness on their own terms, becoming much more relevant than the show itself — and sometimes more relevant than whatever they’re mocking. So what were the best skits of the year? From where we’re standing, the earlier half of 2012 was much stronger, bringing us a couple of our new all-time favorites, and the hilarity trailed off a little, but maybe it’s just that the new goodies haven’t had time to sink in yet. Either way, after the jump, watch our picks for the ten best skits from this year on Saturday Night Live.

(better quality video available at source)

5. Downton Abbey on Spike TV
Air date: February 4
Host: Channing Tatum

We’ve never heard a more succinct and hilarious sum-up of our favorite show. “Like eavesdropping? Then this show is for you. Anytime anyone says anything, a third person hears it from a doorway… Watch what you say, because the Dowager is listening.”

4. Bein’ Quirky with Zooey Deschanel
Air date: February 11
Host: Zooey Deschanel

It’s always a mixed bag when the show tries to make fun of the host, but this time, they hit it out of the park. Sure, Zooey Deschanel is an easy mark, but still — Abby Elliott’s impression of her was only the first treat. Deschanel herself pulled off a hilarious Mary Kate Olsen and Taran Killam’s Michael Cera had us sniggering into our hot chocolates. There are pointless musical interludes, wide-eye-offs, and knitting (Björk’s octopus sweater has an extra hole for its dreams and ideas). Adorkabl and ildly scathing. What else could you ask for?

3. Bronx Beat
Air date: February 18
Host: Maya Rudolph

Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph fast-talk riffing as disgruntled Bronx housewives? It doesn’t get much better than that. Until Andy Samberg and a large foreheaded Justin Timberlake arrive for a sexual harassment-off.

2. Lincoln
Air date: November 3
Host: Louie C.K.

Not only was this clip, a parody o Louie f it was about Abraham Lincoln, hilarious and topical — it was also smart. This is wha SN should be doing all the time: playing to their hosts’ strengths rather than burying them in makeup and hoping for the best.

1. Maya Angelou's Prank Show

Air date: February 18
Host: Maya Rudolph

This is the only sketch that we’ve gone back to over and over again since its airing. Rudolph’s impression is incredible, and this is probably the bes SNL remise we saw all year. Then again, it’s the literary editor judging this.

USA Today's Album Of The Year: Frank Ocean's Channel Orange

sysVI
A steady drumbeat of praise greeted the arrival of Frank Ocean's debut album, Channel Orange. He's up for six Grammy Awards, including best new artist, album and record. Orange won a Soul Train Music Award for album of the year in November and has piled up mentions on numerous best-of-2012 lists.

And now it's USA TODAY's album of the year.

The R&B singer stirred debate just before he released the album in July, by acknowledging via Tumblr that his first love was a man. It was a courageous (and, he has said, liberating) move, considering the genre's perceived homophobia. Yet it was the music itself that would hold everyone's interest, pointing R&B in different direction, away from the conventional club hookups and late-night booty calls.

Ocean certainly has a penchant for radio-friendly lyrics, having written for Beyoncé, Brandy and Justin Bieber. His own music is more nuanced, empathetic and emotionally resonant. Fusing neo-soul, hip-hop, electro-pop, jazz-funk and psychedelic, he shifts moods and tempo and speaks in metaphors in songs about love, disillusionment, decadence, social status, drugs and betrayal.

Breaking the mold hasn't stopped him from doing fine commercially: Channel Orange ranked No. 2 in its first week on Billboard's album chart. With 405,000 copies sold to date, it compares favorably to releases this year by more established R&B stars such as Chris Brown, Usher, Trey Songz and Ne-Yo.

Ocean is part of a new breed of artist, such as fellow Grammy nominee Miguel and Toronto's The Weeknd, who are fearlessly blazing their own paths.

His low-key but intense performances on tour this summer enhanced the positive perception of him. He practically stole the show at MTV's Video Music Awards in September, offering a serene performance of Thinkin Bout You before a simulated campfire that stood out amid the program's usual bombast. For many, that was their true introduction to Ocean's artistry.

Although Channel Orange is Ocean's major-label debut, the album's widespread acclaim comes not so much as a surprise as a fulfillment of promise. The New Orleans musician born Christopher Breaux got critics talking with his 2011 mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra, and his vocals on No Church In the Wild (from Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne) made him someone who would bear watching.

Now everyone will be watching to see what he'll do next.

Alone at Christmas: Troubled child star Macaulay Culkin's solitary lunch for one at Taco Bell
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

He was plagued by drug dependency rumours at the beginning of the year.
And Macaulay Culkin proved that he was doing just fine as he hit the shops to get the last of his Christmas gifts on Saturday, despite starting the day by eating alone at Taco Bell.
The former child star cut a solitary figure as he wandered around New York, before stopping off at the Mexican restaurant to tuck into a tasty lunch.

Eating alone: Macaulay Culkin cuts a solitary figure as he dines alone in Taco Bell before hitting the shops on Saturday
While many people will be watching the festive Home Alone films over the holidays, in which Macaulay stars as a young boy accidentally left at home by himself, the star seemed quite happy to be spending his day alone, pounding the streets of SoHo.

The star, who dated Mila Kunis for nearly nine years, dispelled any rumours that he was undernourished by stopping off at the fast food restaurant as soon as he got into town, buying a hefty meal and sitting on his own to eat it.

After re-fueling, the 32-year-old set about hitting the shops, as did many other New Yorkers in the run up to Christmas Day.

Trying to go as incognito as possible, Macaulay wore a floppy grey hat over his blonde mop of hair, leaving just tuft of the trademark mane sticking out.
He also wore a pair of dark Ray Ban sunglasses and wrapped a stripy scarf tightly around his neck, pulling it up tight under his chin.
The sometimes eccentric-looking star could have passed for any other shopper in a pair of loose-fitting blue jeans and a buttoned-up black jacket.
With headphones in his ears, and puffing on a cigarette, the artist stopped by a number of high street shops, picking up some clothes in Banana Republic and a portable record player in Urban Outfitters.

The former child star has recently turned his $2m New York apartment into a painting studio and recently released a video promoting new art exhibition Leisure Inferno.
Macaulay, who is worth a reported $15 million, created Three Men and a Baby (3MB), an art collective with friends Adam Green and Toby Goodshank.
When The National Enquirer reported that he was 'close to death,' because of an addiction to prescription drugs and heroin, his publicist Michelle Bega told MailOnline that the claims were 'fictitious' and 'categorically without merit.'

Complex: The 25 Most Stylish Celebrities In 2012

This past year was a pretty wild one in style. If last year was the era when dudes first started to experiment with tried and true formulas, then 2012 was the time when guys took serious risks with already established style. Tons of athletes, actors, and musicians may have appeared fashionable or caught our eye for a moment, but very few had a true sense of their own style that was consistently fresh throughout the year.

We combed through the red carpets, street style, and performances to find the most stylish celebrities who weren't hopping on trends, but were forging their own steez in a sea of mediocrity. These are the dudes who know what works, but who aren't scared to switch it up either. After a full year of watching these guys lead the pack, here are The 25 Most Stylish Celebrities of 2012.
5. Yasiin Bey (Mos Def)
5BSdcQuote:
After finally convincing us to call him Yasiin Bey, the man formerly known as Mos Def took 2012 to prove that his style is definitely consistent. Bey is the current master of mixing prints with vintage-inspired garments with contemporary next level style. And he somehow never looks like he's trying too hard or reaching too far. Hopefully now that his style is incredibly on point he can focus on a 2013 album.

4. Frank Ocean
yssZWQuote:
This past year nearly belonged entirely to Frank Ocean. His much-hyped album Channel Orange exceeded expectations, the singer broke down barriers on his own terms, and he did it all in impeccable style. The OFWGKTA member kept it interesting this past year, incorporating powerhouses like YSL and smaller brands like Sidian Ersatz & Vanes into his eclectic wardrobe. Also, don't be surprised if you see dudes rocking the headband à la Ocean next year.
3. Pharrell

For about 10 years now, Pharrell has been setting trends and leading us into the unknown. Did you think 2012 would be any different? Besides having his hands in too many musical projects for us to even count, Skateboard P brought Mark McNairy on board to develop the Billionaire Boys Club Bee Line, proving that the producer/rapper/author/designer is as in tune now as he was ten years ago.
2. Kanye West

Quote:
2012 was quite the year for Kanye West, and that's saying something for the man who's dominated the music and style game for years now. In addition to putting out Cruel Summer, the album that was a constant presence no matter where you went, 'Ye also boo'd up the love of his life Kim Kardashian. And he did it all while creating a high-low style that's consistent enough to be signature 'Ye, but also keeps us guessing and talking about whatever it is he'll do next.

Without even releasing a proper album in 2012, A$AP Rocky sold out a national tour and made sure anyone looking to out-dress him in 2013 would have a ****in' problem. Besides usually being dressed in Raf Simons and Rick Owens, Dat Pretty Mother****er is doing what Kanye and Jay did in 2011 and educating us peons about high-end luxury brands that will undoubtedly soon be the next hot ****. Not to mention Complex's current cover star is homies with Jeremy Scott, Alexander Wang, and Raf Simons. With these friends and his continuously developing style, there ain't no way Rocky's gonna fall off from #1 anytime soon.

Chris Brown talks about leaving the planet

team-breezy

Chri Brown larmed fans when he recently took to his Instagram account to speak about a desire to leave the planet after his next album.

In a rant that was later removed by the 23-year-old R&B singer, but already copied by fans and various publications, Brown spoke about not getting enough credit for what he does.

"Real artist are an endangered species! This gimmick age is (expletive) corny as (expletive)! Be you but (expletive) get credit for the work u do," Brown wrote in the message posted on Instagram. "Not becuz someone cosigns who knows absolutely nothing abou music nd culture! (SIC)"

The singer went on to speak about leaving after the completion of his next album.

"After this album I wanna leave this planet (SIC)," Brown wrote before deleting the message.

A number of fans and publications copied his message before it was taken down, prompting responses from Brown's peers and fans. Chrisette Michele, a fellow singer in the music industry, took to her own Twitter account to tell Brown not to leave.

"Chris Brown. Please don't leave the planet," Michele pleaded with her peer. "Earth would be so wack without u. Love your craft. An incredible inspiration you are."

However, other people seemed more worried about the context of Brown's message.

"Take suicide warnings seriously," one person tweeted after reading a link to Brown's message.

Another person seemed to follow the same sentiments tweeting, "umm... someone needs to put Chris Brown on suicide watch..."

While Brown quit his Twitter account last month following a feud with comedic writer Jenny Johnson, his team seems to be busy on his revamped social networking site documenting and promoting all of the stops on his Carpe Diem world tour.

The singer explained his reasons for trying to keep his social networking websites strictly professional in the December/January issue of XXL Magazine.

"I used to use my Twitter account to vent, but now I mostly use it for marketing and promotions," Brown said in the magazine. "Even if the media asks me something, if it's cool then it's, 'What's up?' But if it's anything that's too negative, I don't care to respond."
