In what was truly a roller coaster awards season, the Academy ultimately crowned “Birdman” as the best film of 2014, giving it four Oscars including the top prize of the night. “Boyhood,” Richard Linklater’s adolescent drama that was twelve years in the making, was long considered a frontrunner, until it started losing the guild awards. It only took home a single Oscar for best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

Here are the 12 biggest snubs and surprises from Oscars night.

SURPRISE: Birdman, best picture
A victory for any of the eight nominees for best picture would be considered a surprise, given how close this year’s award season race has been. Many predicted there would be a best picture/best director split this year, much like last year (between “Twelve Years a Slave” and “Gravity”), but that turned out not to be the case. “Birdman” swept the top two prizes of the night, causing “Boyhood” fans great heartache.

SURPRISE: Alejandro G. Inarritu, best director “Birdman”
Linklater, who won the Golden Globe, lost momentum after the DGA, which went to Inarritu. But many pundits still thought that Linklater would emerge victorious in this category, for the simple fact that he spent so long making “Boyhood.” It turned out that the Academy really loved “Birdman.”

SURPRISE: “Big Hero Six,” best animated film
It was yet another showdown between Disney (“Big Hero Six”) and DreamWorks (“How to Train a Dragon 2”) in this category. The original “How to Train a Dragon” lost to “Toy Story 3” in 2010, and the sequel couldn’t cross the finish line either, despite picking up the early precursors like the Golden Globe and the Annie Award.

SURPRISE: Best editing, “Whiplash”
Richard Linklater’s editor Sandra Adair spent twelve years sifting through footage to assemble “Boyhood,” but the Academy gave the award to “Whiplash” instead. It was an early foreshadowing that “Boyhood” wouldn’t win best picture.

SNUB: Michael Keaton, “Birdman”
Since “Birdman” swept both picture and director, it’s s a little surprising that its star didn’t win an Oscar as well. Keaton was an early favorite in the category, until Eddie Redmayne—who delivers a career-changing performance as Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything”—won the SAG and BAFTA trophies, which are usually good predictors for the Oscar.

John Travolta embarrassed himself last year at the Oscars when he introduced "Adele Dazeem," and the actor is already making headlines again this year for an awkward red carpet moment with Scarlett Johansson.

Johansson was working it on the red carpet in her Versace gown when Travolta snuck up behind her and planted a seemingly unwanted kiss on her cheek. (The two were in the film A Love Song for Bobby Long together.)

"Nice abs," Travolta probably whispered into Johansson's ear. "Haven't I seen you working out at Planet Fitness before, young man?"

""It's time for women. Equal means equal. The truth is the older women get, the less money they make. The highest percentage of children living in poverty are in female-headed households. It's inexcusable that we go around the world and we talk about equal rights for women in other countries and we don't. One of those superior court justices said two years ago in a law speech at a university that we don't have equal rights for women in America and we don't because when they wrote Constitution, they didn't intend it for women. With multiple hit songs and over 50 million records sold worldwide, One Direction is currently the biggest boy band on the planet. But like most "teenybopper" acts, the success came with the pressures of establishing themselves as "real" artists. As their careers have progressed, the five members (Niall, Harry, Zayn, Liam, and the other one) have become more involved with the songwriting process which has been met with both praise and criticism. As a fan, I couldn't help but notice that a few of the songs on their latest release, Four, were musical dopplegangers of past and present pop songs. And because I have no life, I decided to make a post about it.

Disclaimer: This post is just for fun. I'm not trying to accuse One Direction or anyone affiliated with them of any serious wrongdoing. I also realize some of these songs were not actually co-written by any members of One Direction. The title is merely a play on the song title "Steal My Girl". Please don't sue me.



Steal My Girl vs Faithfully

Now most of you have probably heard about this one since the media caught wind of it last fall. The opening chords aren't exactly the same, but the chord progression plus melody is uncanny.



Ready to Run vs Wake Me Up

Another borrowed opener! Now this one, in my opinion, goes beyond just the opening chords. The vocal melodies in the verses resemble each other a bit as well. They have similar patterns and even tones. And the fact the the songs are in the same key certainly doesn't help. But by the time we get to the chorus, we start to see the distinctions.



Fireproof vs Half of my Heart

When One Direction released Fireproof for free as a thank you gift buzz single, I couldn't listen to it without immediately hearing a mashup of these songs. Could there be an underlying message here? Taylor dated John for a bit and is featured on his song. Harry and Taylor had a torrid love affair. Now One Direction has a song that sounds like John and Taylor's. Is this intentional? A subtle dig at John? At Taylor? Is Larry real? I have no idea where I'm trying to go with this.



Stockholm Syndrome vs Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Now, Stockholm Syndrome is by far the best song on the album (fight me on this, I dare you), but I'll be the first to admit the song in its entirety is very heavily inspired by Tears for Fears' hit song Everybody Wants to Rule the World. The beat, the guitar, the overall vibe. Uncanny.

Guardians of the Galaxy director took to Twitter to respond to the anti-superhero movie jokes at this year's Oscars, saying:

"Popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I've already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films. [...] If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we're dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a 'serious' filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken."

Paramedics responded to a medical call at the home of "Star Trek" actor Leonard Nimoy, who has lung disease, and took one person to an area hospital, fire officials confirm.

Nimoy revealed in January that he had been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which he attributed to a smoking habit he had kicked 30 years earlier.

First she got kicked out the club, now the USA. Cali Rapper and #LOSTINTHOT cohost, Chippy Nonstop, recently tried returning from a tour in Asia only to find herself locked up in airport jail due to an expired visa and deported back to her home country, Canada.
