Seth Macfarlane on playing it straight for his new "Holiday For Swing" album

Seth MacFarlane may be famous for creating irreverent comedies like Family Guy and Ted, but he takes crooning very seriously. Holiday For Swing, his Christmas-themed follow-up to 2011's Grammy-nominated Music Is Better Than Words (due this fall via Republic Records), finds him tapping a 65-piece orchestra and veteran arranger-producer Joel McNeely to perform a handful of well-known ("Let It Snow,""Baby It's Cold Outside") and semi-obscure yuletide chestnuts (Frank Sinatra's "Christmas Dreaming," Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney's "Snow.") MacFarlane called Billboard from the Boston set of Ted 2 to reflect on the album, which was recorded from Christmas Day through New Year's Eve last winter between Los Angeles and London.

You recorded this album during the actual holiday season. Why was that so important to you?

Seth MacFarlane: Generally with a holiday album, you find yourself making the recordings during the summer or any time but Christmas, with this one we actually lucked out. Part of it was because we didn’t want to bump up against the production schedule for Ted 2, which is not an ideal time to be recording anything with 12 to 15 hour days shooting a movie. It worked out nicely, and it was just a pure joy to do. Joel actually went straight from that project with me to the scoring of A Million Ways To Die In The West, so we’ve had a fun year.

Do you have any favorite holiday albums that inspired the sound?
I’m not frankly a huge conossieur of holiday music, but I love orchestral jazz. I love that era of high orchestral musicality that bears a lot of similarities to holiday music in a lot of ways. As far as holiday records, gosh I don’t know -- the Home Alone soundtrack?

"Baby It's Cold Outside," a duet with Sara Bareilles, is one of the more recognizable songs on the record -- but also one of the more controversial since its Frank Loesser heyday. What made you want to tackle it?
That's a song that surprisingly has somehow made the leap into the modern era without being called out for what it is. The girl is clearly saying no. But again, it’s just a joy to sing against orchestration that’s that good -- you really gotta be shitty to screw it up I guess.

How do you rationalize your faction of fans who may continue to expect comedy from your musical projects?
Surprisingly, a good chunk of Family Guy fans recognizes why we do this -- they see that against all the comedy is a legitimate regard for the importance of music. It's virtually the only show left on TV that uses a live orchestra for every episode. We use anywhere from 50 to 90 people, depending on how many players are available.

Hear Stevie Nicks' New '24 Karat' Piano Ballad 'Lady'

The song will appear on the singer's upcoming LP, '24 Karat Gold - Songs From the Vault,' due out in October

The latest tune to surface from Stevie Nicks' upcoming solo record, 24 Karat Gold – Songs From the Vault, is a piano-driven power ballad about a woman accepting the uncertainty of the future, titled "Lady," which the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman has released as a lyric video. "The time keeps going on by, and I wonder what is to become of me," she sings. "And I'm unsure, I can't see my way/ And he says, 'Lady, you don't have to see.'"

Nicks wrote the tunes that will appear on 24 Karat Gold, due out October 7th, mostly between 1969 and 1987 (though a couple were written in the mid-Nineties), but she never recorded them properly. She rediscovered the songs while surfing YouTube bootlegs and decided to hunker down with co-producers Dave Stewart and Waddy Wachtel, recording in Nashville and Los Angeles. "We found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever," she said in a statement in July. "I call them my '24 karat gold songs.'"

Earlier this month, the singer issued another 24 Karat Gold tune "The Dealer," which featured a more upbeat rock arrangement to accompany her lyrics about misplaced love and reconciliation. Nicks had written that song in the late Seventies around when Fleetwood Mac were working on their 1979, album Tusk. A demo of the song from that era is still streaming online. Nicks is offering the 24 Karat Gold version of "The Dealer" as an instant-gratification download for fans who preorder the record.

Rolling Stone Review: "Tony & Gaga Transcend Generations and Genres"

$

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett might seem like an unlikely pair, but the video for their version of the jazz standard, "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" proves the diva and the crooner exude a unique, adorable brand of musical chemistry.

Comprising footage from the pair's recording sessions, Gaga struts her stuff in a bevy of various outfits and hairstyles, belting out her verses, before Bennett swings through, sounding dapper as ever. The two join forces for the track's final chorus for a peculiar, yet potent blend of styles that transcends generations and genres.

Bennett and Gaga's duets album, Cheek to Cheek, will see release on deluxe and standard editions on September 23rd. The pair's relationship blossomed after Bennett heard Gaga sing Nat King Cole's "Orange Colored Sky" in 2011 and asked her to sing alongside him on a recording of "Lady is a Tramp," which ended up on his Duets II album. Since then, Gaga and Bennett have recorded a number of tracks from the "great American songbook," including tunes written or co-written by Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Cole Porter.

Accompanying Cheek to Cheek will be two TV specials: Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live!, a concert special recorded at the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center that will air October 24th at 9 p.m. on PBS; and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek To Cheek, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the album, which airs on HSN on September 13th.

In a recent chat with Rolling Stone, Bennett explained what drew him to Gaga, and why their work together truly shines: "She phrases like I phrase. She's a wonderful singer. Everybody knows and loves her very much. I think when they hear this album that we're doing, they're going to say, 'We had no idea that she sings that well.'"

And the next Bachelor is.....

Get ready for a nice little roll in the hay, ladies!
The next Bachelor has been chosen, and it is....Chris Soules (aka Farmer Chris!), the fan favorite Iowan farmer from Andi Dorfman's season, E! News has learned. ABC isn't commenting, however sources who work on the show tell us that Chris beat out former Bachelorette star Arie Luyendyk Jr. to be the ABC hit franchise's next leading man.

We are told that Chris will appear on Good Morning America tomorrow to confirm the news.
According to insiders, Arie was recently informed that he would not be the next Bachelor, and he soon took to Twitter to break the news to his supporters. "I'm not the Bachelor, have fun on the farm people," he wrote, before adding, "Thanks for the kind words everyone. It wasn't meant to be, and I'm okay with it. Happy I can move forward."

Arie appeared to just be speculating that the chosen man would be Chris, but a source connected to the show confirms that it is indeed Chris.

We caught up with Chris at the taping of the Men Tell All special, where he said he'd definitely be interested in becoming the next Bachelor, so his new gig doesn't come as much a surprise.

"How could you not be interested in that? Especially for me, in the situation I'm in, I live in a small town. it's kind of part of the reason I'm here," he told us. "I'm 32 and I haven't really met the person I'm looking for and it's hard to meet people…in a small town. So that alone makes it something I would be interested in."

However, Chris' road to becoming the next Bach wasn't an easy one as former contestant Arie, the runner-up on Emily Maynard's Bachelorette season, was also being considered. We asked readers who they would prefer to see as the Bachelor and 71 percent chose Chris over Arie.
Before making their final decision, a source told us producers were "looking for the anti-Juan Pablo...definitely want a really nice guy this time around."

Are you excited to see Chris as the next Bachelor? Weigh in in the comments below!

Iggy Azalea Blames J.Low For Stage Fall: 'You're Bad Luck!'

Jennifer Lopez may be looking phenomenal these days, but is she the bearer of bad luck?

Iggy Azalea sure thinks so. While walking the Video Music Awards red carpet on Sunday, the "Fancy" rapper told Entertainment Tonight that Jenny from the Block is to blame for her recent stage tumble.

Azalea recalled performing a show in Chicago with J.Lo when her microphone wasn't turned on. "I said, 'at least I didn’t fall over,' and she said 'It'll happen to you one day,'" Iggy recalled. "And then I invited her to watch that show and I fell off the stage! I was like, 'You’re bad luck!'"

Iggy was on her game for her VMA performance of "Black Widow," even with Lopez taking the stage to introduce the performance.

Neil Young Files for Divorce From Pegi Young, Wife of 36 Years

The couple were musical collaborators and co-founded the Bridge School in 1986

Neil Young has filed for divorce from Pegi Young, his wife of 36 years and frequent musical collaborator. A petition for dissolution of marriage was filed by Young in their hometown of San Mateo, California, on July 29th. A hearing is scheduled for December 12th. A rep for Neil Young had no comment.

Pegi is the inspiration for some of Young's most enduring love songs, including "Such a Woman,""Unknown Legend" and "Once an Angel." She began serving as his background singer in the 1990s, sharing the stage with him at the 1994 Academy Awards and numerous tours over the past 20 years. They last performed together at the Bridge School Benefit in October of 2013.

Neil first met Pegi when she was working as a waitress at a diner near his California ranch, a story he tells in the 1992 song "Unknown Legend.""I used to order just to watch her float across the floor," he sang. "She grew up in a small town/Never put her roots down."

Pegi has released three solo albums since 2007 and she's toured extensively on her own, occasionally with Neil on guitar. Inspired by the lack of educational opportunities for their son Ben, who suffers from cerebral palsy, they co-founded the Bridge School in 1986, which educates children with severe physical impairments. They raise funds for it every year with an all-star concert in Mountain View, California.

Neil recently wrapped up a European Crazy Horse tour and is slated to play American solo acoustic dates in October. Pegi just concluded a brief U.S. club tour. They were both slated to play Farm Aid in Raleigh, North Carolina, on September 13th, though Pegi's name was recently removed from the lineup.

What we'll miss about 'Chelsea Lately'

The last episode of "Chelsea Lately" will air on Tuesday night.

In her seven-year run, Handler has made "Lately" the go-to place for fans wanting something a little tarter with their talk-show entertainment. Let Jimmy Fallon have the "nice" aura; Handler is just as soon exasperated with her show, her staff and even her guests as she is tickled.

At this point, who knows what she'll bring to her Netflix program, which -- given the on-demand nature of the service -- will almost certainly have a different format. Nevertheless, there's plenty about "Chelsea Lately" we hope carries over to Handler's next talk-show chapter.

Here are seven (5) things we'll miss in the meantime:
1. She regularly bit the hand that presented her.
Handler laughed and made fun of the same things the rest of us joke about, even when those things -- the Kardashians, Ryan Seacrest -- happened to share a network with her. She didn't care, which was classic Chelsea. Of course, E! probably didn't mind either, because any publicity is good publicity -- even mockery of Seacrest's stature.

tumblr_lolts14so21qlvxlho1_500

2. She was willing to make fun of herself, too.

Handler has been notably open about her louche, if exaggerated, private life. And she encourages needles from guests as well as the comedians who join her for the roundtable to discuss the news.

tumblr_lp5j4vRPLt1qg9pmho1_500

3. Those strange shower sketches.
It's hard to imagine David Letterman -- or even Stephen Colbert -- being willing to engage in argumentative sketches with the likes of Sandra Bullock and Conan O'Brien while standing naked in a shower. (Judging from the fuzzed-out naughty bits, there's a minimum of special effects involved. Incidentally, nice abs, Conan.) Seems like Handler would be a natural to mount a revival of "Steambath."

rs_400x225-130403202030-single-slap

5. Well, hello there, guest.
One of Handler's long-running jokes is that she sleeps with almost all her guests, which in the case of 50 Cent probably actually happened. But she was happy to flirt with almost everybody, men and women alike.

[Blind Gossip] One major celebrity had a minor hissy fit at the prospect of sitting next to a seat filler at a recent awards show.

Briefly, when an audience member at a major awards show leaves their seat to use the bathroom or to present an award, an attractive “seat filler” will be assigned to occupy that seat so that the audience still looks full. Although they are not always paid, seat fillers go through a screening process as if they are employees of the venue, and provide their own formal wear, hair and makeup so that they blend in with the celebrity-filled audience.

Well, Celebrity 1 – who is a major star – absolutely REFUSED to let a seat filler occupy the seat next to her when her companion had to leave for a brief period of time!

She was rude about it, too. She pointed at the poor girl and told a producer that there was no way that she was going to have some random fan sit next to her (Yes, although there were hundreds of star there, Celebrity 1 assumed that the seat filler was a fan of hers)! So while the embarrassed seat filler stood there, the audience coordinators shuffled people around and pulled Celebrity 2 from another row to sit next to Celebrity 1 for a short period of time.

The ironic thing? Celebrity 1 and Celebrity 2 don’t even like each other! However, during that brief seating shuffle, the two sat together in one of the front rows and pretended to be BFFS, all just so that Celebrity 1 wouldn’t have to be subjected to sitting next to a random.

However, that didn’t keep Our Actress from later critiquing More Famous Actress’ “performance” during the telecast of the awards show.

“Oh my god! Why did they have to show only HER clip [and not the clips from the other nominated performances]? It just confirms her belief that she is the most important person in the room! And did you see her reaction? All those ridiculous, over-the-top gestures!” At this point Our Actress did a fairly good impression of More Famous Actress. “She is totally unbearable. Justin Timberlake Parties Solo After Concert in Paris—Get All the Details!

Wherever Justin Timberlake is, it's a party. The singer and his crew were in Paris last week for the European leg of his tour, and the group decided to head out and party at the VIP Room in the City of Light following the concert on Thursday night.

"He had just a little party in the VIP Room and because his friend had a birthday, Justin sang 'Happy Birthday' to his friend," a source tells E! News. "He was behaving very normal. He was very casual, calm and nice and having a great time." Fellow club-goer Sophie Montreaux also tells E! News that Timberlake, who arrived at the Paris hot spot around 2 a.m. and stayed for around two hours, "was just laughing and joking and drinking but before long he stood up and started dancing."

And judging by the photos posted to the venue's Facebook page, it looks like J.T. got up on the mike and maybe even deejayed a little bit? The page wrote, "JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE IS AT 'VIP ROOM' THEATRE PARIS RIGHT NOW FOR HIS OFFICIAL AFTER SHOW !!!!" There's no word where wife Jessica Biel was during his Paris partying, but her absence guarantees that there was one less body dancing to his tunes during the concert.

Biel was seen breaking it down in Montreal last month while her hubby performed on stage as part of his 20/20 World Experience Tour—the evidence of which was captured on camera by one very sneaky fan. As Timberlake brought sexy back, showing off his best moves atop a structure on the stage, Biel danced below her man, grooving along to his hit tune "Take Back the Night."

12 (5) of the Most Distracting Extras in Movie History

$

Background actors, also known as extras, have one of the most important jobs on a film shoot. They contribute to the overall believability of a scene while making it easier for filmmakers to control a set or location. But sometimes, extras draw attention to themselves—either intentionally or unintentionally—and break the main focus of the scene.

1. STAR WARS

When Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca are trapped in one of the trash compacters on the Death Star, a group of Stormtroopers manage to unseal a blast door to find C-3PO and R2-D2 in a control room. As the Stormtroopers enter, one of them hits his head on the blast door. While this was considered a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment from the original Star Wars, George Lucas added a "thud" sound effect in its special edition to highlight the gaffe.

2. BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III

At the very end of Back to the Future Part III, Doc Brown shows up in Hill Valley 1985 in a brand new time machine made from the locomotive he used to help Marty get back to the future. When Doc is introducing his new family to Marty and Jennifer, you can clearly see Doc's youngest son Verne, played by Dannel Evans, gesturing for help and then pointing to his groin. It appears that the very young Evans needed to go to the bathroom, but didn't want to stop the take.

3. NORTH BY NORTHWEST

Before the iconic chase scene on Mount Rushmore, Eve Kendall "shoots" Roger Thornhill in the National Park's cafeteria. After multiple and noisy takes, you can see a little boy in the background anticipate the shot and plug his ears before she fires the gun.

7. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

While Batman and Catwoman are on a rooftop fighting Bane's goons, one of the henchmen poses in a fighting stance and then falls to the ground without getting hit.

12. BEING JOHN MALKOVICH

When John Malkovich spills onto the New Jersey Turnpike after being inside of his own head, he gets angry with Craig Schwartz for making a business out of his inner thoughts and experiences. After he threatens to sue Schwartz, an extra throws a beer can at Malkovich's head when he begins to walk away. According to Being John Malkovich director Spike Jones, this moment wasn't scripted and a drunken extra thought up the scenario after multiple long and boring takes.

A Martin Scorsese film about the Ramones is in the works

$

Following the death of iconic drummer Tommy Ramone, the owners of the Ramones’ estate have announced some big plans for the band’s legacy going forward, including a film directed by Martin Scorsese.

Billboard reports that other Ramones projects coming include a documentary, theatrical play, book, reissues, fashion and “music placement.”

Jeff Jampol, who manages the band’s estate, explains the documentary to Billboard: “The 40th anniversary of the Ramones is coming up in 2016, that’s when the first album came out. So we have a lot of projects leading up to that. We’re looking at a documentary on the Ramones, we just secured a ton of footage, much of which has never been seen before. It came from the Ramones on the road over the years in the Seventies and a little bit in the Eighties.”

On the book, he adds, “You’ll see a book coming, which is not a biographical book so much, but a story of the band’s formation and those first few records and that craziness that happened. It’ll be a combination of prose, photographs and memorabilia and posters, just kind of documenting the scene. The Ramones were the first punk band and they started the punk movement.”

So far, nothing more has been revealed about the film, other than the fact that director Martin Scorsese is attached. Read more from Billboard:

"The documentary is just one of several projects in the works. Among the others are a theatrical play, a book and a film, which already has Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese attached."
