The 5 Worst Summer Weekends at the Box Office in the Last 5 Years

$
0
0

It has not been a strong summer at the box office. Though the box-office was up compared to last year heading into the summer (thanks in part to Captain America and The LEGO Movie), it quickly frittered away its lead. There have been a few hits this summer (Maleficent, 22 Jump Street) but the huge blockbusters haven’t been performing as hugely as they’re supposed to, and there have been a lot of films expected to be hits that have flailed. Tammy, for instance. And this weekend’s Sex Tape, which opened with $15 million, behind the soft openings of Planes: Fire & Rescue ($18 million) and The Purge: Anarchy ($28 million). Thankfully, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is doing its part this summer, falling only 50 percent to hold the lead this weekend with another $36 million. (It’s at #138 million after 10 days, and $240 million worldwide).

How bad has this summer been? I looked at the overall weekend grosses over the last five years for the summer (May through July), and TWO of the worst weekends during that period came in 2014. In fact, the 4th of July weekend this year was the worst since 1999, when Wild Wild West bombed at the box office.

Here are the worst five weekends at the box office since 2009.

5. June 10-12, 2011 ($137 million)

Opener Super 8 ($35 million) led a weak weekend of holdovers (X-Men: First Class and Hangover 2. The other weekend’s new entry, Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, finished 7th with $6 million.

4. May 9-11, 2014 ($136 million)

Neighbors actually had a very solid opening weekend ($49 million), but nothing else could get going. Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell 61 percent in its second weekend, and the other two openers, Mom’s Night Out and Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return were DOA. In fact, Captain America ($6 million) was number five, and it opened six weeks before.

3. July 4-6, 2014 ($132 million)

Tammy ($21 million), Deliver Us from Evil ($9 million), and Earth to Echo ($8.3 million) all opened behind Transformers: Age of Extinction ($37 million) in its disappointing second weekend, making this easily the worst 4th of July at the box office in at least five years.

2. June 15-17, 2012 ($130 million)

Openers Rock of Ages ($14,437,269) and That’s My Boy ($13,453,714) finished third and fourth, behind holdovers Madagascar 3 and Prometheus

1. June 4-6th, 2010 ($128 million)

There were four new releases that weekend (Get Him to the Greek, $17 million; Killers, $15 million; Marmaduke, $11.5 million), and Splice, $7.3 million, and none of them could overtake Shrek Forever After in its third week ($25 million).

Salsa.

What's your favorite summer blockbuster? Difficulty: can't say The Mummy.

A Ranking Of 27 (5) Classic ’00s Teen Movies, From Worst To Best

$

Hello! We (Tabatha, Roz, and Ailbhe) were all teenagers who watched a lot of chick flicks in the ’00s.
Here is our ranking of the most pertinent cinematic masterpieces of the greatest decade.

18. Crossroads (2002)
000000
Tabatha: This was an absolute flop but I loved it.
Roz: BRITNEY FOREVER. I remember the cool karaoke scene. They bury a box in a field? A box of memories and crap.
Ailbhe: The cool girl in my class saw this three times and made us call her Britney.
Tabatha: I just remember being so envious of the fact they could drive. I thought that driving would just open up a whole new world of endless possibilities.
Roz: They were cool American teens who could drive a car and bury boxes in gardens.
Tabatha: According to Wikipedia, Samantha from Sex And The City was in this?!?!
Roz: WHAT?
Tabatha: She was Britney’s mum. Just imagine.

10. A Cinderella Story (2004)
00000
Tabatha: Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray!
Ailbhe: She wears very cool pink Converse.
Roz: They make characters “quirky” by putting them in Converse.
Tabatha: This film had a weird subplot where her stepsisters were advanced synchronised swimmers.
Ailbhe: THERE WAS A COMPUTER LOVE ELEMENT! They instant messaged! Her screen name was Cinderella!
Tabatha: And his was Nomad! Hang on, there is another weird subplot in this where their town is in the middle of a severe drought.
Ailbhe: What made them think, “This film needs more… drought.”
Tabatha: Maybe they thought, “This film needs less… water.”
Roz: “Kids these days, they care about droughts, right?”
Ailbhe: “Converse and droughts!”

5. A Walk to Remember (2002)
00000
Tabatha: SO MANY FEELINGS.
Roz: :(:(:(:(:( so sad. Mandy Moore appreciation.
Tabatha: The bit where he meets her dad at the end and he’s upset because she never got to witness a miracle. And then the dad goes, “She did. That miracle was you.” MY GOD. I’m almost crying as I type this.
Roz: The boy builds her a telescope.
Ailbhe: What an odd gift. “You are unwell so here is a piece of scientific hardware, feel better.”
Roz: “All I ever wanted in life was a, er, telescope.”
Tabatha: STOP MOCKING THIS. IT WAS VERY VERY TOUCHING. Also, Mandy Moore wore dungarees in this film and Christ, she looked cool.

4. Save the Last Dance (2001)
00000
Roz: There are a million and one things I could say about how much I love this film. The soundtrack is perfect, the dance routine at the end is mindblowing, Sean Patrick Thomas is great, and then there is JULIA STILES.
Tabatha: SEAN PATRICK THOMAS WAS SO SO SO FIT IN THIS.
Roz: Yaaaaaaas.
Ailbhe Hang on, guess how old SPT is now?! 43?!
Tabatha: THAT IS UNTRUE.
Roz: WHAT?
Roz: Guess who his sister is in the film? Kerry Washington! Pre-Scandal. She makes Julia look cool by giving her hoop earrings and a bandana in the car before they enter the cub. She also teaches Julia to say the word “slamming”.

2. Get Over It (2001)
00000
Roz: The song at the start! It is perfect. The “Stop, stop! Cuz I reallyy love youu, stop, stop! I’ve been thinking of youuuuu” song.
AIlbhe: I love this film. The guy’s parents were sexperts with a TV show! And Sisqo was in it. AND Mila Kunis.
Tabatha: Also Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks.
Roz: They put on the play at the end. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I think.
Tabatha: Yes. And then as they say their lines they realise that they’re not acting and all the feelings they are expressing are true.
Ailbhe: Little Steve the fairy! “SIT DOWN, LITTLE STEVE!” There was a guy at uni with me who looked like Little Steve and I used to say, “SIT DOWN, LITTLE STEVE!” in my head whenever I saw him.

Electro troupe Dragonette are certainly no strangers to a good ol’ dance floor collabo, having teamed up with Martin Solveig for their inescapable smash “Hello,” as well as Kaskade‘s storming “Fire In Your New Shoes.”

This time around, they’ve joined Amsterdam based producer Mike Mago for a throbbing, summery House-pop production called “Outlines” due out on August 15 — and it’s got all the makings of a smash.

“Another dance in the dark/Another love undercover/Outlines of a heart,” songstress Martina repeats before giving way to a deep, funky beat breakdown. The club cut blends in nicely with the ongoing House revival across the pond, including Disclosure and Clean Bandit.

Saaphyri gets her boobs fixed and Venus D'Lite tries to get more surgeries to look like Madonna

Sunday's brand new episode of Botched was filled with lots of drama!

We met Saaphyri who was unhappy with her breasts and tummy, Adam who wanted to look more like Madonna than he already did and Diana who needed to get her nose fixed.

The first patient we meet is Saaphyri, who is a previous reality rock star!

A few years ago she lost a good amount of weight, but it made her breasts change shape and her stomach wasn't affected by the weight loss. So she went to get liposuction in her stomach and have her breasts lifted to look more natural. She explains, "You know, like a little chocolate Barbie."

After the surgery was done, the doctor put a girdle on her, which made an indentation on her stomach that never went away, and her breasts were way bigger than she expected.

Saaphyri sits down with a talent manager about branching out and doing something other than reality shows.

She wants her ideas to be put on scream and would like to become more than just her breasts. The eccentric lady explains, "Kind of like a guy who likes to wear women's underwear, he knows what's going on underneath there, nobody else does. That's what I want."

Then Saaphyri meets with Dr. Terry Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif to discuss her past with plastic surgery and what she would like in the future. The first thing she explains to them is that she lost a lot of weight in the past, except in her stomach.

She then shocks the doctors when she tells them that she woke up during her past surgery and when she made a comment the doctor told her to shut up!

Watch her describe the insane operation. Her previous surgeon was murdered?!

Dr. Dubrow explains they will cut into her breasts, around the areola to reduce the size and reduce the size of her breasts. To which she gets very excited about!

They decide her abdomen is very full and she needs some liposuction and a tummy tuck.

Adam works in a new show in New York four nights a week, as Madonna. Living the dream. He goes shopping to get costumes made for him and his dancers, and goes on an endless search for the perfect materials.

It's surgery day for Saaphyri and Dr. Dubrow is confident he can make things much better, but because she has so much breast tissue, her breasts may still be slightly larger than she wants.

Once in surgery, Dr. Dubrow discovers that her implants were only 300 ccs, which means his initial concerns were accurate, her natural breast tissue was making her boobs big.

He put in 200cc implants, but didn't want to remove any breast tissue because then you are decreasing blood supply.

He then works on her abdomen by suctioning three areas, and removing the dented section that she hates.

Next we meet Adam, the self-proclaimed number one Madonna impersonator in the world.

Adam makes a grand entrance when he meets with the doctor's and tells them to call him Venus D'lite, his name as the Madonna impersonator.

The doctors are very intrigued…

They step into the exam room, and the doctors realize Adam already has a Madonna nose. Dr. Nassif explains that the surgeries Adam wants will only do more harm.

Adam agrees.

But before Adam leaves, Dr. Dubrow wants to learn some moves.

On Saaphyri's one week check-in, she is a little out of it, sleepy and in some pain.

But Dr. Dubrow is really happy with her results, and so is she!

Saaphyri surprises her friends by rolling up in a limo for her post-surgery reveal! She explains, "I can't wait to surprise my friends with my hot new body."

Doesn't she look great?!

She is so happy to have her botched results fixed!

Her breasts are flawless now, and way more proportionate to her body.

Pretty much posting this for Saaphyri because I love her and I miss VH1 celebreality.

This may be news to some, but former rapper Yung Berg is making quite the name for himself as a producer these days. Having worked with the likes of Lil’ Wayne, Jason Derulo and Tamar Braxton, the Grammy-nominated beatsmith/songwriter is also adding Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Puff Daddy’s upcoming albums to his repertoire. In an interview with Rap-Up, Yung Berg talked about what can be expected from Nicki’s third studio album.

The Pink Print is the female Blueprint. Like Jay Z put out The Blueprint, I think this Pink Print really personifies that,” he said. “And not only that, I’m really involved in it, and Nicki Minaj is like on of the best people. One of my best friends in the music industry right now period.”

Yung Berg also revealed that he will serve as A&R on puff Daddy’s Making Money Mitch LP, and has recorded a track for Rihanna’s eighth solo album. After a trip to Miami, he talked about the mogul’s attitude toward the project.

We got a joint called ‘All Night’ for Rih. And I’m really excited about A&Ring this Money Making Mitch project with Puff. I just left Miami, I stayed down there for a week, and it was just amazing to see how excited about music he is.”

Shonda Rhimes Teases Season 11 Time Jump, Theme — 'It's a [Spoiler]-Centric Season'

Grey’s Anatomy will turn its clocks ahead when Season 11 launches this September, but how much time will have passed since the events of May’s finale?
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
“About 24 hours… maybe,” series creator Shonda Rhimes cagily tells TVLine.

The limited time jump all but confirms that Meredith will still be reeling from the loss of BFF Cristina, and, potentially, D.C.-bound husband Derek. It also perfectly tees up the theme of the season.

“Right now, if you were in the writers’ room, you would probably tell me that the theme is ‘Meredith,’” Rhimes shares. “Because all I keep saying is, ‘The show is just about Meredith Grey!’

“It’s really a Meredith-centric season,” the EP continues. “She’s lost her ‘person,’ her [half-]sister has shown up, her husband is chafing to go someplace else…”

Speaking of Mer’s new secret sibling, Rhimes says the reveal that cardiothoracic surgery boss Maggie is the child of Richard and Ellis “will be influenced by what Meredith went through with Lexie,” her other (ill-fated) half-sis.

Rhimes reveals that this familial grenade is one she’s been wanting to pull the pin on “forever.” And then, about a month before the Season 10 finale, Rhimes says she told the writers, “‘Annnnd... we’re there,’ and they all [cheered]. So it’s pretty exciting.”

Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 launches Thursday, Sept. 25, at 8/7c.

Imo, she is the most boring character in the show since forever, but it's "her" show so w/e. Also, I can't the "lost sister who also happens to be an amazing surgeon like Lexie" storyline. It's soap-opera levels of cheap (which GA is at this point, lbr). Anyway, I really wanna see how this season evolves without Yang. Bring Izzie and Addison back!

Mods: I found another source and btw, TVline isn't listed in the banned sources.

Perhaps the green hair dye is rubbing off on her a little too much.

For Katy Perry was spotted wearing a bizarre full length see-through green body stocking as she explored an historic Canadian pioneer village on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Teenage Dream singer was living a fashion nightmare with the distinctly punk ensemble as she strode through the tourist spot on a break from her Prismatic World Tour.

She was seen cruising around the property at the 19th Century Canadian village, exploring all it had to offer and even snacking on stick-shaped candy available at the tourist store.

Clearly having had a wonderful day catching up on history, Katy shared an Instagram snap later which showed her sitting in a historic classroom wearing a dunces hat.

HOW about this for a random rumour - Avril Lavigne is reportedly being lined-up to join The X Factor as the fifth judge.

It had been thought Rita Oral would take up a seat alongside Simon Cowell, Cherry Cole, Louis Walsh and Mel C- as the mentor of a new wildcard category, but it looks like she’s facing competition from the Complicated hitmaker.

Grungy Avril’s agents apparently got in contact with Simon after claims a fifth judge would join the show during the live stages to put her name forward.

Talk about shameless.

“It was understood an international female singer’s management has contacted the producers asking if they could be considered for the role,” a telly source said.

‘No one knows who it is as since the leak about the fifth judge, everything is very strict. Only a select few people know.

“But the general feeling behind-the-scenes is that it’s Avril Lavigne,” they told Metro.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Rita’s name has been in the frame since news of the fifth judge leaked, but the insider added she is still to have a screen test with the other judges.

She was previously linked to a judging role after she impressed as a guest judge in 2012.

X Factor’s new wildcard category is said to be made up of one failed act from each of the Boys, Girls, Over 25s and Groups.

The identity of the fifth judge is expected to be officially revealed in September, as filming for the judges’ houses round gets underway.

San Diego Comic Con has been thought to be the place to break major news in everything from comics to television to major movies. However Marvel has been turning the tables all week doling out big news all over the talk show circuit. After storming into The View and The Colbert Report, Marvel has announced plans for the Guardians of the Galaxy to take over ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday July 21st.

In a press release, Marvel promised Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper will appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live on the same night as the superhero adventure's worldwide premiere.
Along with this enticing ensemble, the Monday episode will also boast exclusive bonus content.

Of course, comedian turned talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has become a standout on late night television thanks to bits like Mean Tweets--where celebrities read actual mean tweets about themselves--Unnecessary Censorship, and Youtube Challenges. For this Guardians of the Galaxy-centered episode, Kimmel will challenge the Marvel knowledge of Pratt, Saldana, Bautista, Diesel and Cooper in an unconventional trivia contest that will pit the action heroes (and heroine) against five-year-old superhero expert Mia Grace.

George Lucas Facing Possible Lawsuit Over Chicago Museum Build

$

0

Back in June, George Lucas announced plans to build a private museum in the Windy City, but he's facing some political opposition from Chicago open space advocates, who claim his $1 billion, 95,000-square-foot design for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art would be in violation of city ordinances created to protect public space adjacent to Lake Michigan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the advocates are threatening to file a lawsuit that would block the 70-year-old Star Wars creator from carrying out the build.

The publication notes a variety of other opponents, including aldermen (who think the museum should be located downtown or in an economically disadvantaged area) and devoted Chicago Bears fans (who worry that losing two parking lots would interfere with their pre-game tailgating). But the city's mayor, Rahm Emanuel, reportedly shrugged off the lawsuit at a recent press conference: "Our contribution is two parking lots," he said, while noting the economic and employment benefits the build would bring.

The facility – set to reside on lakefront real estate near football stadium Soldier Field – is set to include a variety of items from Lucas' personal collection, including film memorabilia, visual effects examples created by Industrial Light and Magic and paintings by American artists like Norman Rockwell. The filmmaker is aiming to open the museum in 2018.

Lucas' original plan was to construct the facility in San Francisco (near the headquarters of Lucasfilm), but that proposal was rejected for interfering with the "historic character" of the area. However, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told THR that Lucas, whom he called "a perfect gentleman," is welcome to move construction to L.A. if the Chicago plans fall through.

"I am humbled to be joining such an extraordinary museum community and to be creating the museum in a city that has a long tradition of embracing the arts," Lucas said last month in a statement announcing the Chicago build.

"Scandal" Star Tony Goldwyn's Latest Project: a Death Penalty Drama

$
0
0

Tony Goldwyn, whose family is a Hollywood institution, is probably best known for his portrayal of President (and adulterer-in-chief) Fitzgerald Grant, Kerry Washington's love interest on ABC's Scandal. Goldwyn's film career kicked off back in 1990, with his role as the villain in Ghost, and he's worked steadily ever since. (Notably, he was the lead voice in Disney's Tarzan.) He has also taken several turns behind the camera, directing on a handful of films and TV shows, including Grey's Anatomy, Dexter, and Justified. Now he's taken the helm of his first TV show, creating, along with his screenwriter friend Richard LaGravenese, The Divide, a new death penalty drama premiering on WE tv July 16. Set in Philly, the show centers on a contested capital case and the conflict between "Innocence Initiative" lawyer Christine Rosa (Marin Ireland) and District Attorney Adam Page (Damon Gupton). After the trailer, we'll chat with Goldwyn about race, moral hazard, and nailing the zeitgeist.

Mother Jones: You play a moderate Republican on Scandal. What are your real-life politics?
Tony Goldwyn: I would say I'm a moderate Democrat. I've always been fascinated with politics—fascinated and maddened by the way things get done in our system, which as an ideal is such an extraordinary system, but the way it actually works can be mind-boggling.

MJ: What made you want to do a show about the death penalty?
TG: I directed and produced Conviction, a true story about a man who was wrongfully convicted of murder and spent 18 years in prison, and his sister, who became an attorney to try to get him out. I got to know [Innocence Project co-founder] Barry Scheck very well—he's a character in the movie—and I got very passionate about the cause. It's just so inherently dramatic. My co-producer Andrew Sugerman said, "There's a TV series in this, because there are so many different stories." We considered making an anthology series, every week a different story. Then Richard LaGravenese and I came up with the idea of a prosecutor who maybe gets it wrong, and looking at it from both sides of the divide. I never wanted to do a show that was a polemic. That was boring to me. What really interested me was the moral divide in all of us: In trying to do the right thing, where's the line you cross? At what point have you gone irrevocably into moral hazard? Every character in our show, practically, crosses that line.

MJ: As a Scandal actor, you're beholden to creator Shonda Rhimes' crazy plot twists. It must be nice to be in charge of story for a change.
TG: It is! Richard is really the voice of the show. We make all the story decisions together, but he will take our ideas, and when he puts pen to paper he just goes some other place. The Divide really digs into the social issues we wanted to explore, and does it in such a dramatically fun and entertaining and surprising way.

MJ: You've directed a fair bit. How is it different, being the creator of a show?
TG: It's very much like being a movie director, because in television the creators make the decisions. I ultimately defer to Richard, because the writer in television is the key—though he will sometimes defer to me if I'm right. I also directed the pilot and first two episodes, but I can't direct all of them. In our first season, I was the person who crafted the stuff in the editing room and ran it by Richard, whereas he did the bulk of the writing and was on set to make sure the show was being realized the way he wanted.

MJ: With whom do you consult when you need a reality check?
TG: I've spent a lot of time with Barry Scheck and have talked to prisoners who had been wrongfully convicted. You just get to know people in that world through exploring those stories. One of our advisors is a capital defense attorney in Pennsylvania and another is the executive director of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project, which is what we based our "Innocence Initiative" off of.

MJ: Did you look to any real life cases for inspiration?
TG: There were a few. Richie and I were thinking of something like the Petit murders in Connecticut, where a family was brutally, incomprehensibly murdered. In our very first conception, we went to the stereotype of a black man who was wrongfully convicted of murdering a white family. It was Barry's idea to flip it racially. He said, "Why don't you make it a white guy who murdered a black family, and a white guy on death row?" We thought that was really interesting. And he suggested the black prosecutor who puts a white guy away. We're not literally modeling any of the characters or cases on specific people or events, but we kind of modeled the show on what's happening in Philly. We wanted our DA, Adam Page, to be the first black district attorney in Philadelphia. He's not modeled on Seth Williams, who is the first black DA, but he was certainly inspired by conversations with Seth.

One of the other things we're really exploring is this new breed of African-American politician, like Cory Booker, who present themselves in a sort of post-racial world—and yet we live in anything but a post-racial world. Mayor [Michael] Nutter was an inspiration too—a very charismatic progressive politician who has been able to represent black America, but in a way that embraces white America as well. As opposed to Isaiah Page, Adam's father, who is the police commissioner. Isaiah is very much an old-school guy who came up in the civil rights world and harbors a lot of...He's a fighter. He says to his son, in the first episode, "Every issue is about color, son."

MJ: Your timing is pretty good, with all these lethal-injection cases making headlines recently.
TG: The fact that we've hit the zeitgeist is very satisfying, and we feel lucky. While we were shooting The Divide, there were enough exonerations, enough examples of difficulty and demonstrations of the need for reform that it's gotten in the news. The whole Oklahoma thing was horrifying.

MJ: Yeah. In the pilot, they actually talk how these execution drugs are untested.
TG: That was a big issue. The European companies wouldn't supply them anymore and the American drug makers weren't making enough money off the drugs, so they stopped making them. The FDA does not require transparency on these drugs. Something bad was bound to happen. Also while we were shooting the pilot, a year and a half ago now, the first execution in Pennsylvania since 1999 was about to happen. The DA was advocating vociferously for this guy's execution. It was so similar [to The Divide], it was really frightening. This guy, Terry Williams, was convicted of double murder. He had been sexually abused by the men that he had killed. He admitted he was guilty, but the prosecution withheld testimony they had of his sexual abuse and built a case that he was a psychopathic murderer. Everyone involved, from his relatives to the victims' families, wanted this guy's death sentence commuted.

MJ: The casts of both Scandal and The Divide are far more ethnically diverse than most TV shows. Was that deliberate?
TG: Shonda has this great phrase: She's not very interested in diversity, she likes to say. It's reality. I feel the same way. Television is a powerful medium in terms of remapping our perceptions. Will & Grace normalized gay characters, like, "Oh, yeah! These are my friends. I'm okay with that." You start to represent a reality in a world like Scandal or The Divide, where half the population—people in power, people of affluence and education—are African American, and you go "Oh, yeah, that's right." The central character in The Divide is a strong, dynamic, brilliant woman. She's the center of the show, along with Adam Page, a powerful, successful black man and leader. That's very important to us. It's important from a social perspective, but it's also for drama. We putting stuff in people's faces that they might be a little uncomfortable with, frankly. That they need to look at.

MJ: So, what's your personal take on the death penalty?
TG: I'm morally opposed to it. It makes no sense as a policy: It's not a deterrent, and economically it's a disaster. This study that just came out estimated that 4 percent of people on death row are innocent. That's 1 in 25! If I put an innocent person to death, that's murder. I can't imagine spending a night in jail for a crime I didn't commit.

MJ: Do you suppose capital punishment will be phased out eventually?
TG: I think it's inevitable. That's one of the reasons why we wanted to do The Divide. When people understand what's going on, the tide will shift.

The Divide premieres July 16 on WE tv at 9 p.m. (8 p.m. Central)

Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic backs Eddie Vedder

Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has backed Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder over his comments criticising the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

In a speech during Pearl Jam's recent show at Milton Keynes Bowl, Vedder said: "I swear to fucking God, there are people out there who are looking for a reason to kill. They're looking for a reason to go across borders and take over land that doesn't belong to them. They should get the fuck out, and mind their own fucking business."

The comments were reported as "an anti-Israel diatribe" by The Jerusalem Post, but Vedder insisted he wasn't taking sides in any conflict. Before playing a cover of John Lennon's 'Imagine' during Pearl Jam's show in Lisbon on July 18, Vedder said: "If you're anti war, it doesn't mean you are pro one side or the other in a conflict."

Now, Novoselic has backed Vedder in a 5,500-word message on his blog. The Nirvana bassist, who campaigns for political reform, wrote: "The people of Palestine and Israel deserve peace and prosperity. It is time to stop repeating the same old arguments, dogma and hate speech. It is the knuckleheads on both sides that should be criticized and not the singer from a rock band. In addition, both sides need to make hard decisions about finding a settlement to the catastrophe that is Israel/Palestine."

Novoselic said he hoped the conflict could eventually halt if both sides look toward "their shared recent history". He added:"Thank you Eddie Vedder for speaking up for peace in our world. Eddie has gotten some criticism over comments he made about the conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis. That situation has been messed up for so long, it is no wonder that even mentioning it is toxic. Let's face it, the relationship between the Palestinians and the Israelis is a disaster!"

Novoselic was reunited with Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl when he played bass on Foo Fighters' 2011 album 'Wasting Light'. He played with Grohl, Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear and Paul McCartney on new song 'Cut Me Some Slack' for Grohl's 2012 film Sound City.
