Meet Tarantino’s Favourites: the Papushales Brothers

Since the release of Big Bad Wolves, the filmmakers have been lavished with praise, accolades and airline tickets to take them on a whirlwind tour of countries where their presence was sought. Everyone, it seemed, wanted to meet the men behind the year’s most relentlessly dark but entertaining thriller. And don’t just take my word for it. The directors’ biggest fan is none other than Quentin Tarantino, who made an unexpected appearance at the Busan Film Festival in South Korea, telling a worshipping crowd of cinephiles that Big Bad Wolves was “f****** sensational” and“not just the best film in town, but the best film of the year”.

It was at this point during the Q&A that Papushado rose from his chair, removed his tie, raised his arms above his head in hero-like pose and left the podium to audience cheers. “It was an extraordinary moment,” recalls the director, who then went out for lunch with Tarantino.“I was in the presence of our hero and told him that I had no intention of pretending to be cool. I felt like a teenager at a Justin Bieber concert.”

Later over drinks as Tarantino introduced him to the Korean film director, Joon-ho Bong, Papushado could only picture the face of Keshales — off promoting the movie at festivals in Chicago and Denver — when he found out.

“I tried calling him 27 times that day to say: ‘You are never going to believe this but...’”, recalls Papushado, 34. “Aharon had asked me to try and get Quentin to see the film, but I never imagined it would be possible.Fortunately a journalist from the film website Twitch was seated beside Tarantino and he reported the reaction, which went global. So Aharon knew it was gospel.” And best of all, Tarantino sent a gift to the co-director. “All I can tell you is that it was a present Aharon will never forget, but we are not at liberty to say more,” insists Papushado (????), who months later still feels overwhelmed and humbled by the rapture for BBW ('Big Bad Wolves' - not the other BBW). This is hardly surprising as it was only the duo’s second feature. And though it won the equivalent of five Israeli Oscars, they are still new to the game.

Born in Jaffa, Keshales, 38, grew up in Bat Yam and after serving in the Intelligence Corps of the IDF attended Tel Aviv University’s film school, where he became a teaching assistant until completing his Masters. He also worked as film critic for Ynet, Globes and Ratings magazine, which made him all the more sensitive (and vulnerable) to the review process when he and Papushado made their first film — a horror flick called Rabies.

Aharon Keshales (left) and Navot Papushado (right) flank Big Bad Wolves star Lior Ashkenazi.

“Aharon was actually my professor at university,” Papushado says. “He was a very dedicated teacher and produced my graduation film, which was shown in New York. It was at that point that I said we should make a feature together because I was so in awe of his writing and passion for the Hebrew language.”

A story about a brother and sister who run away from home and fall into the trap of a psychopathic killer, Rabies was a huge success and reinvented the horror genre in Israeli cinema, which was the plan as the writer/directors are passionate about the work of Hitchcock and the scores by Bernard Herrmann.

“We’re not ashamed to be influenced,” explains Papushado, a citizen of Yuvalim who in true Cinema Paradiso-style is the grandson of a film projectionist. “In Israel, some accused us of being Tarantino wannabes. And we were like: ‘Hell yeah!’ We’re also Spielberg wannabes, Hitchcock wannabes, and Scorsese wannabes. Of course we want to be like them, they’re the greatest.” Ironically it was Korean cinema that had the biggest impact on the duo, as it showed them it was possible to be influenced but still make a story their own.

“Koreans draw on films from Japan and Asia, but retain their own identity and that gave us the confidence to make an Israeli film that would bear the influence of the West, but still make it very Israeli, very Jewish-like in a way.”

The appearance of an old man delivering soup for his son in the middle of a torture scene is just one of many moments in Big Bad Wolves when the Jewish effect shines through. This is all the more remarkable when you consider the movie is about a vigilante policeman violently punishing a man he believes to be the paedophile who murdered his daughter. Yet amid all the hammers and knuckledusters, there are calls from concerned wives and mothers and an estate agent who will do anything, noch, to sell a house.

With BBW still to open in France and Spain, expect an investors’ stampede when “the Papushales Brothers”, as they have been dubbed, look to fund their next production — Once Upon A Time In Palestine.

“It will be the first Israeli spaghetti western,” explains Papushado without a hint of irony. “It’s about the British in Palestine and a time when we were the freedom fighters trying to kick them out. The Haganah are the sheriffs [cowboys] quite literally and in Israel no one ever really talks about that period, which is the origin of the country’s story.”

Tarantino cannot wait to see it, along with a lot of other Hollywood film types, some of whom have already expressed an interest in remaking BBW. There is certainly export potential for Israeli writing thanks to adaptations of TV shows such as Prisoners (Homeland) and Hostages, but Papushado says the duo are in no hurry to hand it over.

“We have a lot of respect for American cinema as they are very good at translating and adjusting the mentality of the original. But with our film you are dealing with paedophilia, which is a tough subject, and you have to nail the subtle tone, which is what makes it interesting. There is also that very dark and morbid Jewish sense of humour to contend with, so we are waiting for the right offer and someone who will do it well.

Until such time they are responding to appearance requests at home and overseas, while working on Once Upon A Time In Palestine. “It has been an incredible period in our lives,” Papushado reflects. “For Aharon particularly it’s a dream come true, for not only has his film hero — Tarantino — praised our work, but he also got to marry the woman of his dreams.” That woman is Lilach Sonin, one of Israel’s premier news and sports anchors. “For 20 years he vowed to marry her. Or someone just like her. So when she came to a screening of Big Bad Wolves and told him how much she loved it, this otherwise shy guy felt he could ask her out for coffee.

“Two months later they were married. It’s a movie.”
Just not the kind the Papushales Brothers would make.

Big Bad Wolves is out on DVD.

Hilary Duff was spotted shopping in Beverly Hills today

Hilary Duff is coming clean about her upcoming album, her first LP since Dignity 7 years ago. And it turns out, Ed Sheeran will be involved.

“I’m working with a lot of people. I’m still writing, so that process is still going on,” she told MTV News on the 2014 iHeartRadio Music Awards red carpet. Hilary’s working with songwriters and producers like Lindy Robbins and Toby Gad, along with Savan Kotecha, who has written for artists like One Direction and most recently penned Ariana Grande’s “Problem.”

Wearing an orange pout and voluptuous top knot, the singer/actress and mom of 2-year-old Luca was hyped to be talking about her new project, supposedly out in the fall. In fact, she was so hyped that while she was rattling off details, she casually slipped a HUGE detail.

“I’m cutting an Ed Sheeran song next week, which I’m really excited about,” she said while listing everything about her new music, including that a single should be out “soon.”

Wait, rewind. Ed Sheeran?? Yes!

Describing the album as an “earthy, indie-pop vibe,” Duff explained what it means to be returning to the studio after taking a hiatus from releasing music.

“It feels good to be in the studio. It feels good to be talking about my last few years — the high points and the low points,” she said. “I really just want to be honest and be an open book for my fans to know where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing, how I feel and all that good stuff. So, I should have a single soon, and an album by the fall.”

It’s a lot to take in, but there’s so much to look forward to. Hilary fans, rejoice!

Chris Evans Plans To Direct Again In August, Talks Directorial Debut '1:30 Train'

0
0

While Chris Evans is known for his work in front of the camera, in the near future we’re going to be able to see what he can do behind the camera. Late last year, Evans directed his first movie, 1:30 Train, and he’s currently in post-production finishing it up. The indie pic is about two people (played by Evans and Alice Eve) who meet in a train station and share a night of romantic adventures before the woman must catch the next train back to New York.

I recently landed a bit of time to talk about his directorial debut. He talked about filming in New York City, where he’s at in the editing process, test screenings, how he initially envisioned using only a soundtrack but changed his mind and decided to use a score, if he should try and premiere the film at the Sundance Film Festival or the Toronto International Film Festival, how he wants to direct his next film this August (after Avengers: Age of Ultron wraps), and what kinds of projects he wants to focus on.

Collider: Talk to me about getting behind the camera. Was it a challenging shoot? You were in New York City.
CHRIS EVANS: Yes, was it a challenging shoot? It was a challenging shoot. I’ll tell you, the only issue is because it’s New York at night. First of all, listen, I love shooting in the city. The city is a character in my opinion, it really is, but New Yorkers are not that enthusiastic when you shut down their streets [laughs] and they’re not exactly accommodating. So it was a challenging environment, it was freezing and it’s all night shoots, so by the end of the first week you just got a lot of people who are just catatonic and tired, so you kind of have to maintain a certain mentality. The fish rots from the head down, so if you come to set complaining and bitching, everyone’s going to start, so you try and come in every day with the most positive attitude you can. That’s a set when I needed Anthony Mackie. That’s a set where you need the energy that Mackie can provide.

Where you are in the editing process now?
EVANS: We got through the first edit. We’ve done our first cut and now it’s a matter of spit polishing, you do these screenings and you read the test results and it’s a challenge. The problem is when you’ve seen the movie so many times- I know every single take, I know every single cut, I know every single daily, it’s hard to detach yourself a little bit. We’re about to go on this press tour. I leave Saturday and then I’ll be gone about two and a half weeks, and during that time I am just not even going to think about 1:30 Train. Hopefully I can come back with some fresh eyes and have a pretty clear perspective on what’s working and what’s not.

I’ve spoken to a lot of filmmakers who do the test screening and they actually enjoy it because things that they think are working maybe don’t work.
EVANS: [Laughs] Yeah, I’m sure we had plenty of those. We also had some things that you think won’t work that do. There’s no rhyme or reason for these test screenings, I tell you. You read these comment cards and things you really thought were great are a miss and things that you really thought were going to be problem areas actually work out. This is where it becomes a bit of a balance, because you want to make sure you listen to these test audiences, because you want to sell tickets, but by the same token it’s not like a painter does a painting and then asks everyone, “Do I need more purple?” There has to be a part of you that makes a creative decision to say, “This is what I want.” The problem is that when it comes to painting a picture, the canvas and paintbrush don’t cost millions of dollars that someone else funded. So as a result a lot of people have opinions and a lot of people are allowed to have their say. This is where making art becomes tricky.

Where are you in terms of the soundtrack and music you want to use?
EVANS: Our music is still temp, we haven’t hired a composer yet. And it’s so funny, when I initially set out to make the movie I really thought I only wanted a soundtrack. I really only wanted songs. I had all these songs in my head that I wanted to use, but what I found is that when you drop a lot of these songs into the scenes, it almost felt like TV. It felt juvenile in a way. I ended up realizing score is far more effective. Score makes things a little more poetic, a little more artistic. The second you drop a song into it, it feels like- I don’t want to name a TV show, but all the sudden it just feels not as artistic as you’d like it to sound. You watch a movie like Place Beyond the Pines, you’d be hard-pressed to find a song in that movie. It’s all score.

Derek Cianfrance is amazing.
EVANS: The guy’s unbelievable, but it’s score. You don’t even notice it. You notice soundtrack, you don’t notice score. That’s the point, score is just supposed to emphasize the moments. It’s supposed to highlight what the camera’s doing. So I’ve kind of realized that score is my friend.

We are in March, the Toronto film festival is September, Sundance is January.
EVANS: Which one? This is where- I’m embarrassed to admit in my whole career, film festivals are not the thing that I’ve focused on and it’s so funny sitting with my producers. We’re like, “Where do we want to go? Where do you want to go?” And they all have their opinions and in my brain I’m like, “Well, what’s the difference?” Apparently there’s a big difference.

There’s a big difference.
EVANS: There’s a big difference! I didn’t know that. To me- hey, wherever we want to go is fine by me. It’s the first movie, there are unforeseen challenges and I’m learning an enormous amount. It’s kind of the thing where you just kind of can’t wait to get to the next movie. The second I finish Avengers I can’t wait to start the next one in August, which I have every intention of doing.

I know I have to wrap with you, but I have two things. One, I would suggest for you Sundance, based on all the knowledge that I have on film festivals. I think it’s more of a personal filmmaker- Toronto is so under the water of award season and that’s what everyone’s talking about that sometimes smaller movies lose focus.
EVANS: Toronto is more based on awards and things like that?

I think for a first time filmmaker and a personal movie, I would say Sundance is better. I haven’t seen your film so I don’t know, but in my own opinion would be Sundance because it’s a welcoming place for first time filmmakers and that’s where I would go if I had a first time movie. You seem very passionate about being a director and I’m definitely curious about- you mentioned August, what books or stories have you been looking at?
EVANS: This is the crazy thing, my team is like, “What do you want to do next? What type of movie do you want to do?” For me, I like human stuff. I like stories that are like- unfortunately they may be interpreted as simple, and I hate putting them in that category, but I like things that feel relatable. I like stories about brothers and sisters, fathers and sons, mothers, daughters, boyfriends, girlfriends. Human stories, like Terms of Endearment. Ordinary People. Just dramas- drama, but things that are just relatable. Things that aren’t too fantastical. It doesn’t have to be about wild drug dealers and car chases and bank robberies. Just simple stories that can resonate on a profound level.

So you basically are thinking August you’re going to do another movie, but you just haven’t decided which one yet.
EVANS: I will do another movie in August and I just don’t know what it is yet.

So you have a few scripts that you’re debating.
EVANS: Yeah, I got a couple that I’m reading and I told my team just send me everything. Because I’ve got the whole movie of Avengers, I’m literally going to London and I’m just going to be reading scripts. I’m going to find something else and I’m going to do it.

Something to talk about? Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend Toni Garrn parties with his ex Gisele

They are both stunningly beautiful, possess enviably statuesque and slim figures and have achieved great success in the modelling world. But Toni Garrn and Gisele Bundchen also have another thing in common - actor and infamous modelizer Leonardo DiCaprio.

So the two beauties may have had a few things to discuss as they partied together on Saturday night at Harry Josh's Pre Met-Ball bash in New York City.

Leo's current girlfriend Garrn, 21, who is rumoured to have moved in with the 39-year-old actor, happily posed for a snapshot with Gisele, 33, at the party.

Gisele looked lean and bronzed in a sparkling gold mini-dress. She wore minimal make-up and left hair natural and loose for the event.vHer husband Tom Brady, 36, was also by her side, dressed in a slightly more quirky ensemble of bright red trousers and a blue checked shirt. A rather unusual combination for the pro American Football player.

Toni on the other hand showed off her long slender legs in a tiny leather mini-skirt with front zipper and paired it with a plain black T-shirt. The models beamed and looked relaxed in each others company.

According to InTouch, Wolf On Wall Street actor Leo has moved his German girlfriend into his recently purchased New York unit.

A source told the magazine: 'Leo bought the apartment [in March] and quickly moved Toni in with him. It seems like they’re really enjoying living together.' The source added that the couple - who have been dating for almost a year - always look 'happy' and 'relaxed' when around the exclusive Riverhouse apartment building.

Meanwhile, Brazilian supermodel Gisele has recorded a sexy dance remake of Blondie's disco hit Heart of Glass for H&M's summer campaign.

Back in September 2013, for their Autumn campaign, she covered All Day and All of the Night by British band The Kinks, with proceeds from iTunes sales going to help give better lives to disadvantaged children around the world via UNICEF.

'I am so excited to be the face of H&M this autumn,' the stunner exclaimed. 'I love the street style look and that we can raise funds for a good cause. I hope everyone downloads my song.'

Tamar Braxton and K.Michelle feuding again?

0
0

After months of silence, could Tamar Braxton’s feud with K.Michelle have started up again?

At some point over the weekend, Tamar was suspected of slinging some shade at the former “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” star. Although she didn’t tag any other artist in the comment, some assumed that Tamar was slyly calling out K.Michelle.

Tamar didn’t give any indication that she was even referring to K.Michelle in a back-handed way, but K’s fans tweeted their expectation that the Rebellious Soul siren would speak up.
“Im not. I saw all the tweets last night,” K.Michelle tweeted. “I mind my own business and they really like to test me. But I’m a bully. I make music not war. Smh.”
While K.Michelle probably had every intention of not taking the bait, it seems she couldn’t resist firing back on Tamar’s assumed slight. She took a little shot at the “Tamar and Vince” star on Instaram, posting a shot of a muppet–a label she’s infamously attached to Tamar in the past–and sharing a public prayer.
“Lord, please keep me In your loving arms. I’ve been good. I’ve shown support. Haven’t bothered anybody,” K.Michelle wrote with the picture below. “I even went to watch the new movie ‘Muppets most wanted’ and Miss Piggy continues to mess with me. I just wanna sing. No more jumping gates, I even do yoga now. I’m trying.”

The Grand Budapest Hotel Cruise with Wes Anderson, Tilda Swinton

0

Wes Anderson is redefining "The Life Aquatic" this June with a Grand Budapest Hotel-themed cruise.

The idiosyncratic writer-director will be joined by Budapest actors Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman, as well as frequent writing collaborator Roman Coppola, on June 13th for a seven-day sailing expedition from New York to London.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the unlikely jaunt is a victory lap of sorts for Anderson, in light of Budapest's immense commercial success (earning $133 million worldwide since its March release – the most for an Anderson film).

Passengers will cruise aboard Cunard Line's regal Queen Mary 2, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

The cruise will feature a special screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel, followed by a Q&A with the director and cast. Prices for the trek range from $1,298 to a whopping $18,948, but the hilarious memories will be worth it. (Can you imagine how fanciful Anderson's swim trunks must be?)

The Grand Budapest Hotel, Anderson's eighth feature-length film, earned strong reviews across the board, including high praise from Rolling Stone's own Peter Travers: "It's a filigreed toy box of a movie, so delicious-looking you may want to lick the screen," Travers wrote. "It is also, in the Anderson manner, shot through with humor, heartbreak and a bruised romantic's view of the past."

Lance Bass On His Upcoming E! Wedding Special: "I'm Honored To Share It With The World!"

0
0

The former 'N Sync band member tells Gay Star News there is no firm date set yet for the ceremony but he knows it will happen before the end of the year.

'We're filming it for an E! wedding special. It will probably air around Valentine's Day so it has to be before Valentine's Day I know that,' he explained before hosting the GMCLA Voice Awards in Las Angeles over the weekend.

Bass explains why he is happy to have the wedding be a television special on the network that brought viewers Kim Kardashian's wedding to Kris Humphries.

'Never in my lifetime did I think that I'd be able to get married legally. It's just amazing how fast everything is going right now and I'm just honored to be able to share my wedding with the world. As a little gay kid growing up in Mississippi, I would have loved to have turned on the television and see that happen and say, Oh my gosh, there's nothing wrong with me and I can have that.'

Bass admits that he always dreamed of one day getting married and having a big wedding but he did not allow himself to believe he would be standing across from another groom on that day.

'Growing up in the South, all you think about is family and who you were going to marry. At that time, of course, I was kidding myself that I was going to marry a girl and I always dreamed of that wedding and starting a family.'

Since announcing his engagement to Turchin last year, Bass says their three-year relationship has not really changed.

'I think it's going to be really different after we walk down the aisle - I think there's something about that that's going to make it so real to us. There's probably going to be a lot of tears.'

Hannah Montana Demo, "Beach Weekend", Leaks

Do you miss the old Miley Cyrus or simply need brief respite from the marijuana-fuelled, thong-rocking shenanigans of the Bangerz era? Well, you’re in luck! Over the weekend a previously unreleased demo from the glory days of Hannah Montana surfaced online and, despite its obvious rawness, it’s something of a jam.

“Beach Weekend” is a perky pop/rock anthem that positively exudes sunshine and happiness. “Every day up before the sun’s up, quick shower then dress and head to Starbucks,” chirps Miley over strummed guitars before the cheery chorus kicks in: “we’re going to beach this weekend!” I’m not sure what album this was recorded for but Smilers seem to agree that 2007′s Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus is the most likely candidate. Listen after the jump.

“Beach Weekend” is now streaming on Twerk Girl’s Tumblr. Let us know if the song put a smile on your face in the comments below.

Shailene Woodley said she's not a feminist and pissed off the Internet

That's what Shailene Woodley discovered after saying so in an interview with TIME magazine.

Along with the March release of her film Divergent, Woodley spoke openly about choosing strong female roles with her young fans in mind. Earlier this week, when TIME asked Woodley if she considers herself a feminist, the actress replied: "No because I love men, and I think the idea of 'raise women to power, take the men away from the power' is never going to work out because you need balance."

This comment immediately sparked an outcry across the Internet - especially among those in the YA community, given Woodley's starring roles in both Divergent (based on the YA novel by Veronica Roth) and the upcoming The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. (Woodley is currently promoting The Fault in Our Stars.)

Most criticizing Woodley's comment immediately pointed to the actress's apparently misinformed definition of feminism.

"Feminism is simply advocating opportunities for all people regardless of gender," author Shannon Hale wrote on Twitter in response to the article.

Author Tess Sharpe went on to add, "There are many young ppl who educate themselves before speaking w/ authority. If you have an enormous platform, think before you speak. And if you aren't sure of the definition of something, then ask! That's how we learn."

"Why would any woman say she wasn't a feminist?," Beautiful Creatures co-author Margaret Stohl added to the conversation. "What are you, opposed to yourself? Says the mother of three girls..."

The comments section of the article on TIME is even more rife with sarcasm and criticism of the actress's comments. One user wrote, "I think Shailene Woodley needs to first be able to correctly define what feminism is before stating why she's not a feminist."
