It's Official: Nicki Minaj is the best American Idol Judge

0
0
It's a wrap! American Idol's new judging panel just finished auditions for Season 12, and viewers will see which contestants earned golden tickets when the show debuts in exactly two months.

Next up for the judges – who are all smiles alongside Seacrest in an exclusive new Idol photo – is Hollywood Week, when they will whittle down the contestant pool to determine which singers will move on to the live shows.

Despite an on-set spat between Carey and Minaj during auditions in Charlotte, N.C., in early October, the judges have been getting along well during this latest round. "Mariah and Nicki sat next to each other yesterday," an Idol source said Thursday. "There really is some great chemistry among all the judges."

The new panel has been working long hours, adds the source, but "they've found what they think is some seriously superstar talent out there." The Long Beach set had its fill of special, expressive moments too, such as when an 8-year-old girl showed up dressed like Minaj – complete with a pink and blue wig – to support her auditioning aunt.

"Nicki told her she loved her color palette and talked to her about how important it is stay in school,"
says the source. "The little girl sang 'Starships' for Nicki, who let the girl and her brother sit on her lap for the audition. It was really cute."

The new season of Idol makes its debut over two nights, on Jan. 16 and 17.

Miguel helps lead the charge for an edgier kind of R&B artist

0
0

On Billboard's current R&B chart, nestled somewhere between Rihanna's latest inescapable hit and club bangers from Trey Songz, is Miguel's left-of-center gem, "Adorn."

Miguel's self-produced slow burner, with its subdued groove and emotive croons, is so different from urban radio offerings of late that it seemed destined to be swallowed by bigger records from better known acts.

But "Adorn" nabbed a spot on the charts — and has stayed there for nearly seven months.

"I remember thinking how crazy would it be if they played this on the radio," he said of the single that spent four weeks at No. 1. "None of my songs have ever sounded like anything that was going on the radio."

"Adorn's" sleeper surprise gave the L.A.-based avant-soul singer, born Miguel Pimentel, his breakout moment and set the tone for his recently released sophomore disc, "Kaleidoscope Dream." But it also signaled a much bigger change in the genre it came from.

The 25-year-old leads a wave of artists aggressively pulling away from the conventional boundaries of R&B by championing edgier, genre-blending productions while maintaining soulful melodies.

Neglecting the beats that have propelled the genre to the top of the charts over the past decade (be it the bass-heavy hip-hop of a few years ago or the four-on-the-floor Europop of today), Miguel and acts such as Frank Ocean, the Weeknd, Mateo and Dawn Richard are cutting their own versions of alternative R&B.

The new movement feels like the most significant stylistic change in R&B since neo-soul rolled around in the 1990s. It was driven by singer-songwriters such as Erykah Badu, Maxwell, D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott, who were seen as soul revivalists with debuts that infused jazz, funk and African elements into R&B.

When Miguel arrived in 2010, he offered a hybrid of R&B, funk, hip-hop, dubstep, rock and electronica — which he branded "eclec-tric" — and although his debut disc, "All I Want Is You" spawned minor hits like the sublime "Sure Thing," his modern take on classic soul was overlooked as an acquired taste.

As off-kilter as his debut was, it proved merely a teaser for the unconventional rhythms he offered in "Kaleidoscope Dream," a disc that brimmed with buzzing synthesizers, heavy melodies and psychedelic grooves. After building a following with fierce live performances, the disc opened to critical acclaim and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

"I hope more artists who are R&B at the core and pushing the boundaries will join me in embracing the fact that [the genre] did become a stereotype," said Miguel. "I'm proud to wave the flag for what's coming."

"Kaleidoscope Dream" quickly garnered comparisons to another fully realized disc, Ocean's breakthrough "Channel Orange." Released earlier this year, Ocean's Def Jam debut was celebrated for its eccentricities, confessional storytelling and disregard for the trends scoring radio play.

"Frank Ocean's album was an example — he wasn't making music for radio," said Fuzzy Fantabulous, producer for Big Boy's KPWR (105.9 FM) morning show and director of talent relations for Stampede Management."It seems like everybody was trying to do the four-to-the-floor, Pitbull-type music, and I get it, they want to go overseas and tour."

Recent club-savvy releases from crooners such as Usher, Chris Brown and Ne-Yo have reflected that shift toward EDM. Rihanna, who has long teetered between urban and dance-pop, ruled radio last year with "We Found Love," produced by popular dance DJ Calvin Harris.

Both Brown and Usher were criticized for alienating core R&B fans with more pop and dance-leaning tracks. Their albums debuted at No. 1, but sold half of what their predecessors did on the first week.

Usher said the current influx of global, electronic dance music in pop influenced his latest record, "Looking 4 Myself." He explored new textures and it worked, especially on lead single "Climax. It spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. He followed up with an aggressive synth-pop dance track.

"I went to Coachella. I went to Ibiza, Korea, Asia and South America. I heard all these different types of music," Usher said ahead of his album release. "As I went city to city, country to country, I would turn on the radio, see what the DJ was doing and of course paid attention to what was happening in terms of sales. Electronic music had become more relevant, and DJs had become more significant in breaking sounds.

"I wanted to get in there, that wasn't a space where a lot of artists were," he continued. "I realized this stream is moving upward. The one thing people criticized is there was a certain sound that had a certain essence that was kind of departed from soul and R&B and that's what I'm synonymous with and I went to a very dance sound. But that's where music was going. It was a slow start for me but a quick start for the rest of the world."

Up and coming alt-R&B singer-songwriter Mateo believes the phenomenon of the pop/dance/R&B hybrid has reached its peak."In order for urban singers to chart on those platforms, you gotta come out with a four-to-the-floor joint," the L.A.-based Cincinnati native said. "What I see now is an appreciation starting to build for the R&B that used to be. There is a renaissance happening."

Mateo built an online following with a series of mixtapes, EPs and videos. He's racked up more than a million views on YouTube and landed a deal with Interscope. "Its definitely R&B, it has soul in it," he said of his sound. "But there's elements of alternative rock, there's the big drums. I always felt like urban music didn't have the euphoric sound that you shout at stadiums."

Online discovery has played a critical role in breaking these acts, with each of them taking control of their music and bypassing traditional methods.

When Ocean grew frustrated with Def Jam he released a mixtape, "Nostalgia, Ultra," for free on Tumblr. He was already a critic's darling, a member of L.A.'s hip-hop collective Odd Future and selling out shows before "Channel Orange" hit stores earlier this year, a rarity for R&B acts that have been dependent on radio and music videos.

Miguel rolled out "Kaleidoscope Dream" in three parts to promote the album. Fans who purchased either preview (dubbed "Air" and "Water") could use iTunes' Complete My Album program for the full record. He followed a similar method when he introduced fans to new music with "Art Dealer Chic," a series of conceptual micro EPs that he released free for three consecutive months, earlier this year. "Any kind of anticipation or newfound acceptance really comes from that," he said.

The DIY model worked for the Weeknd, who released a trilogy of free albums last year and has since teamed with a major label to reissue the set. It's also the foundation for Richard's solo career. She is launching a solo career after finding success in two different groups: urban pop girl group Danity Kane and hip-hop fusion collective Diddy Dirty Money.

Armed with a tiny team (her producer also manages her) she released an EP, "Armor On," earlier this year exclusively on iTunes. It sold more than 30,000 copies without any radio play and hit No. 1 on the iTunes R&B albums chart and No. 4 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.

"There [is] a transition happening," said Richard, whose debut, "Goldenheart," is due in the new year and will be distributed by indie company Altavoz Distribution. "R&B doesn't have to be so linear. ['Armor On's' success] was a confirmation that a new kind of artist can succeed."

Devin Lazerine, founder and editor of the R&B/hip-hop news site Rap-Up, said listeners are no longer letting radio dictate their playlists.

"There is a demand for more 'real' R&B that is showcasing vocals and less studio effects," he said. "It's almost a response to the inundation of pop."

Fuzzy puts it more bluntly: "I'm sure radio probably frustrates a lot of artists because they hear what is going on radio. And when [certain artists] do it they get chastised for it," he said. "It's almost our fault — and their fault for compromising."

More info on new MySpace

0

In the past few years, the name “Myspace” has become somewhat of a dirty word–or worse, a joke. Once the top social network for a bulk of the ’00′s, their reign came to a grinding halt as Facebook opened its doors to the general public. But now, the original massive social network is planning to make a grand comeback. And to do so, they’ve focused on the one aspect that helped to shape Myspace’s original legacy: Music.

Yesterday, myself and a group of journalists were invited to the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills to hear about the brand new MySpace and have a chat with the owners themselves: Tim Vanderhook, Chris Vanderhook…and Justin Timberlake. (I know.)

It sort of feels like decades ago at this point, but there was a time in our lives when artists like Lily Allen and Sky Ferreira were being scooped up left and right and signed to labels based on the demos posted on their MySpace page. Now, the network want to recapture that magic.

Around noon, we were all gathered into a room, where Chris and Tim Vanderhook came to introduce us to the new Myspace.

First and foremost, the duo acknowledged that Myspace knows what they’re up against, and that they need to “re-earn the respect of a skeptical audience.” They stressed that they weren’t trying to be “just another social network,” and that Myspace is primarily about fostering creativity–and the design certainly speaks to achieving that goal.

The new site is incredibly sleek, if you haven’t already watched the preview. It’s not a typical feed-style network: For one thing, you scroll from left to right, magazine style. There’s a music player that follows you along for the entire site experience, ahen you watch a video, it takes up the whole screen (while you can keep interacting on top.) It’s the kind of forward-thinking design you’d expect to come from the mind of an artist who cares about the overall experience, rather than a team of SEO-minded programmers.

Instead of “friending” or “following,” there’s “connecting”: If you like any piece of media–photos, videos, playlists–you “connect” with the content, allowing you to see who else has connected with the same type of media. There’s also “mixes,” which are essentially multimedia playlists that thread audio playlists, photos and videos into one neat package, in any combination.

Everything about the site experience–from the super high quality photos to the in-your-face layout–is a vastly more emotional experience than what Facebook has slowly lost over time.

In keeping with the new site strategy, Myspace is now heavily focused on exploration, which is a treat for unsigned and signed artists alike. There’s a “Discovery” tab to find out what’s currently trending (the tab opened up to a big, beautiful photo of Sky Ferreira), lots of editorial (I read through a MySpace reporter’s play-by-play on Rihanna‘s 777 Tour), charts, analytics, recommendations, advanced search capabilities (you start typing on any page, and you’re instantly searching the site.

Also new to the experience is “Top Fans,” a section of the artist’s page which uses algorithms (Klout comes to mind) to display their most influential fans–meaning not only do these people consume a lot of content, but they reach a lot of people too. This could become a highly sought-after honor, and in the case of acts like One Direction, I imagine the daily wars between diehard Brazilian stans battling their way to the top of the list on the slight offchance that Zayn or Louis sees their name could get rather ugly.

On a nostalgic note, Myspace is reintroducing two of the features from their original incarnation: The profile song, which is a single song a user can set for their profile, as well as the beloved/hated Top 8, which allows you to decide which relationship you value more: Your best friend of 20 years, or Katy Perry.

After the presentation from Chris and Tim, we all took a break for lunch (read: stress-eating pre-Justin interaction). Then, we were broken into groups and led into a room to play around with MySpace for a bit.

The product is still in the early, early stages of beta, and that became clear fairly soon: There aren’t many users on the site right now (obviously), and the breadth of interaction capabilities right now is fairly minimal. However, the site’s design and navigation is incredibly impressive, although it does require a slight learning curve. It’s easy to get lost in the site (as I’m sure is the intention), and there’s plenty of opportunities to explore new talent. For unsigned acts, the site seems rich with opportunity for self-expression and, most importantly, self-promotion.

After the demo, our group was led into a room full of couches, where we eagerly awaited Justin and the Vanderhooks. (Possible band name?) And then, they walked in and introduced themselves. And by that, I mean Justin Timberlake shook my hand. To clarify: His hand was on mine. To clarify further: We shared an intimate moment.

Immediately, the group began to discuss the mission of Myspace–and for a bulk of the discussion, Justin took the helm:“I’m an artist first,”Justin told us, explaining that the new MySpace was “built by an artist, for an artist.” He stressed the fact that the new Myspace would become the hub for musicians as it once was, and that it would be a place where an artist could curate the experience beyond simple interactions. At one point, someone mentioned the vast amount of unsigned acts that were displaced after Myspace began to decline in popularity years ago. “It’s going to be their home again if I have anything to do with it,” he said.

Later on, I asked Justin how Myspace plans to provide artist-to-fan connection, like the instant gratification of getting a tweet from your favorite artist. He agreed that he loves tweeting fans, but in his vision for MySpace, artists will be able customize their interactions with fans as they see fit–not simply limited to a single method (like a 140-character text response.) I would have more quotes from that entire exchange, but the only notes I took at the time were “AHHHHH” and “just talked to me for 10 minutes” as I was busy DYING INSIDE BECAUSE HE WAS STARING INTO MY SOUL THE WHOLE TIME AND I COULDN’T BREATHE, SO SEXY, OH MY GOD. #Journalism

When I regained my vision/hearing, I found the conversation was still happening. In Justin’s view, the new Myspace is aspirational: “I don’t want it to be drunk party pictures or what I’m doing right now…it’s who I’m going to be, and what I have to offer.” In a way, it’s a way for fans to take a glimpse into an artist’s creative process–or as he referred to it, an “inspiration board.” The team stressed that there were still plenty of developments on the way, including concert ticketing and opportunities for artists to sell merchandise directly on their own pages.

And then, at the very end, came the million dollar question from MTV News: Will this mean that Justin’s planning to get back into music?

“You guys act like I said I retired,” he joked.“I can tell you this,” he said as the room suddenly felt very quiet.“When I’m ready to say something, I will in the biggest way possible…I’m really patient. It’s not about them. It comes from a pure place.”

Not to speculate (well, maybe just a little), but it sure seems then that an event like say, the re-launch of a social network, could be the needed provocation for some long awaited new tunes. In any case, it certainly seemed like he’s preparing to reclaim his throne in the near future. I have faith.

With services like last.fm and Spotify, there are opportunities to discover new artists. With Soundcloud and Bandcamp, there are ways to new artists to promote their music. But there’s no single service, App or website has ever acted as a central hub as well as Myspace once did–and from what I saw yesterday, it has the potential to become that source once again–and in a gorgeous new way.

After all, you can always count on Justin to bring sexy back.

Niall, you traitor! The One Direction cutie is trying to woo Selena because there is a ‘real spark’ between them. But what about his good friend Justin? Awkward!

Could this officially be the end for Jelena? In the wake of Justin Bieber and Selena’s Gomez‘s break up, Niall Horan has reportedly decided to make a move on Selena. We knew she wouldn’t stay single for long! And now, rumors have emerged that she finds Niall “sexy.” Read on to find out all of the explicit details of their flirtation.

As previously reported by HollywoodLife.com, Niall has been comforting Justin after the split, but now it seems like Selena is his main concern! Niall and Justin have been good friends for a long time, so there is no doubt that Justin will feel very betrayed if Niall and Selena get together. Although, all is fair in love and war.

“Selena thinks Niall is very cool and finds his Irish accent really sexy. They’ve been chatting to each other on her private Facebook account and [they] text each other. There’s a real spark between them. They both lead busy lives but Selena would love to get together with Niall next time they’re in the same country,” a source tells The Daily Star. Wow!

To add more fuel to the fire, on Nov. 15, One Direction were guests on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where Niall told Ellen DeGeneres exactly what he looks for in a girl. ”I like someone that’s cute, someone I can have a laugh with, and I also like people that are American.” Selena certainly fits the bill!

What do YOU think? Should Niall and Selena get together?

Robert Pattinson is really not a fan of Twilight

source

Everyone creams Kristen for not being "grateful," even though she constantly defends the franchise, but it's apparently okay for a man to say whatever he wants, criticize and mock the franchise without judgment. I say this as someone who is not a fan of any of this twilight stuff.  I just can't turn a blind eye to the obvious double standard even if their personalities aren't parallel.

Men get away with so much.  The only get called out if they do really extreme things like cheat on their wives with 18 other women, or get arrested for beating a woman up.

And also Megan Fox got blasted for the shit she talked about Transformers... Shia made critical comments about Transformers as well as other films he was on and walked away scott free.

Adam's in a pickle...clip from E!

TWIST: Can you tell us about what's coming up on Degrassi?
Luke: This year, we have a story line that's never really happened before. There might be a wedding involved, some break ups, but a lot of things are going to make the fans love it. I'm very excited.
This storyline has been hyped up so much, sucks that we won't see it until the spring episodes

TWIST: What's the vibe like on set?
Luke: We have a family vibe when we're filming. One of my best friends is actually Monroe Chambers who plays Eli. We all get involved with the crew, the cast and the executive producers. Even at 6 o'clock in the morning, it's never really a bad time to go to work.

TWIST: Can you tell us about your character?
Luke: Drew starts off as a football jock who gets all the girls and keeps making bad decisions. Then he meets a girl named Bianca and they fall in love. He's gone through the ringer but I'm very lucky to be able to portray him in all of the multiple stories that he's had.

TWIST: How are you similar and different to your character?
Luke: We kind of act the same way. When we know something is right, we always stand up for it. When we believe in something, we don't let it go very easily. We are a lot more alike now, then when I first started.

TWIST: Drew is a football player on the show! Do you play any sports?
Luke: I pretty much play every sport possible. The one sport that I don't get to play on Degrassi is hockey, and that's my favorite sport. The one sport that Drew is best at is basketball and I actually suck at basketball.

TWIST: Can you tell me what's next for you?
Luke: I just found out I'll be coming back next year on Degrassi. Being in LA has been a big step for me. The next thing is just landing a movie or TV show and making the move out to LA.
the last question is really the only reason i posted this interview. guess drew's coming back. that's 1 of the 2 linda said are coming back (so far). after dallas' comment last week about taking a "victory lap or two", he seems to be the popular guess for the other character that's staying. hf dallas, nhf drew at all. and i could totally see luke joining some terrible cw show tbh

"Sakura Nagashi" (Flowing Cherry Blossoms)

Lyrics (translated by Utada herself):

Watching flowers just blossomed fall
"Too early, this year" you said,
In disappointment, regret
And you were beautiful

If you could see me now
I wonder what you would think
Me, living without you

Everybody finds love
In the end

If you could hear the newborn's cry,
Sound and healthy
Ringing in the town you protected
I know you would be so pleased
The footsteps that continue after us

Everybody finds love
In the end

I can't believe that I'll never see you again
I haven't told you anything yet
I haven't told you anything yet

Watching flowers just blossomed fall
The trees stood by, helpless

However great the fear, I will not look away
If at the end of everything, there is love

The song was released to iTunes (Japan) and Recochoku today. "Sakura Nagashi" will have a physical release in the form of a DVD single out on December 26, 2012.

Chris Cornell on Soundgarden’s New Album, the Queen of England, and Axl Rose

0
0

Thirteen years after forming, Soundgarden appeared to disband for good in 1997, following a rankling Lollapalooza jaunt. But another thirteen years later — after a highly visible role fronting Audioslave and releasing three full-length solo albums — singer Chris Cornell got his old band together for a new album, King Animal, which makes ample use of the 48-year-old’s four-octave wail. To mark this occasion, a contemplative Cornell chatted with Vulture about new songs and lost friends, then regaled us with stories about everyone from the Queen of England (“sweet”) to Axl Rose (“sad”).

Did participating in the Pearl Jam Twenty documentary trigger any Soundgarden nostalgia for you? Was it an impetus to get the band back together?
We were already doing that. We’d already met and had conversations about different things by then. So, no. But I suppose [it was] in the context of Soundgarden getting back together and hanging around those guys and being in Seattle, and Soundgarden also coming down to one of the Pearl Jam shows in L.A. It was probably helpful in kind of remembering things, I guess.

A recent Spin story quoted your bassist Ben Shepherd as saying he was homeless and having serious money issues. Did this come as a surprise to you?
Well, I think what he said was sort of misunderstood, or taken out of context. We were recording the record at that point, and he was kind of couch-surfing. And it was interpreted that he didn’t have a place to stay. Even though he owned a house [laughs].

He used the word “broke” which really alarmed fans.
Yeah, but I think that was nonsense.

You’ve referred to Johnny Cash covering Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage” as a career highlight —
Oh yeah. It’s beyond winning the lottery. It’s like an endorsement from the person that you would trust most.

Did you ever meet him?
Ben and I went to a show he played in Seattle and met him. I talked to him for a while. He was a gentleman, and June Carter Cash was there — she ran up, full of energy, and got into the conversation. They were almost familial. I’ve met everyone: the President, the Queen of England ... I don’t think any of them made me feel like that. I was star struck. And weirdly, I almost wanted it to be over, because I didn’t know what to say.

Before you met the Queen, did you have to be debriefed on how to behave around her?
They have a printout, like, really simple rules in how you address her. If you look at it, realistically, her job has been essentially greeting endless processions of people. If you look at it that way, she’s very sweet. She does this all the time. And if you have someone her age meeting this procession of people, it’s smart to have it all kind of tied up in a bow where everybody knows what to do — and there are no stupid surprises.

Now that you’re better behaved and no longer drink, what would you say is your biggest vice?
Coffee. It probably was always my biggest vice [laughs]. I never wrote music or arranged songs or lyrics when I was under the influence of anything but coffee. That’s not gone away.

You did that fundraiser for Obama in February and covered “I Will Always Love You.” I never took you for a Whitney Houston fan.
She passed away a couple of days earlier. That was the only performance I was going to be doing over the next course of months because we were in the studio recording at the time. So I was sitting in the dressing room waiting to go on, and kind of figured it out. I thought it would be nice to do.

It also says a lot about your skill set that you can just figure that out on the fly.
There’s a lot of waiting around in my job [laughs]. But, also, there are a lot of feelings in people who are stars who had an effect on a lot of other people. Anyone that suffers depression and addiction, as it relates to the entertainment business, often there can kind of be a cocoon [around them]. Though you would imagine someone like that would have more resources to get better, it can often be the opposite. You’re kind of enabled to continue whatever lifestyle it is. There’s sadness to anyone that dies before their time, and specifically ones that seem to affect people in a positive way. It doesn’t matter if it’s Whitney Houston or a nameless, faceless person on the street. That’s just as big of a tragedy for me.

We tend to associate the Seattle grunge scene with a lot of addiction-related deaths. What do you think of when you look back on that time now?
There’s something about losing friends, particularly young people, where it’s not something that you get over. I don’t believe there’s a healing process. How do you, really? In what way can you stop and say, “Well, it’s god’s will.” I always thought that line I’ve heard a million times — twice as bright but half as long — is bullshit. It’s tragedy. I just carry all of that with me all the time. All I can do, if anything, out of respect for my friends that are no longer here, is to do my best to lead a good life and and take advantage of the fact that I’m still around, take the opportunities I have that they should’ve had.

In 1991, Soundgarden opened for Guns N’ Roses. What do you remember most about that tour?
Without saying anything negative about Axl, what I remember the most was Duff and Slash and everyone else being regular, sweet, warm guys in a rock band that just wanted to play rock music. And then, like, there was this Wizard of Oz character behind the curtain that seemed to complicate what was the most ideal situation they could ever have been in: They were the most successful and famous rock band on the planet. Every single show, hundreds of thousands of fans just wanted to hear songs. For some reason there seemed to be this obstacle in just going out and participating in that. That is what I remember the most. It’s sad.
